A podcast about music and relationships and our relationship with music.Â

Extremely good news, the audio is actually fixed on this one. Even better news, this is maybe our best episode yet. We're covering the Texas bred post-hardcore infused prog rock legends The Mars Volta and their debut album De-Loused in the Comatorium. We delve into the concept of this record surrounding the comatose dreams of a man named Cerpin Taxt as well as discuss the real life friend of Cedic Bixler-Zavala, Julio Venegas, whose death the story is loosely based on.The version of the album I have is the Vinyl Me Please exclusive re-press on 180g gold and black marbled vinyl with completely remastered audio that honestly sounds fantastic. One of the best sounding pressings I personally own on vinyl. Their packaged in a nice gatefold sleeve with unique tip-on detailing around the artwork and an alternate cover. It also came with an exclusive 12x12 print done by photographer Robin Laananen. The whole package makes me nostalgic for the hay day of VMP.In the news corner this week we cover the onfolding serious allegations made against Katy Perry by Ruby Rose as well as several others, and then to counter balance that serious story with some silly drama, we discuss the quitting and/or firing of drummer Eric Morotti from death metal band Suffocation so he can join different death metal band, Sanguisuggabog.Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's IG/TikTok/YouTube - @MothraLunaJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSVHosted on Ausha. ***EDITOR'S NOTE***Some settings got messed up with this episode so the audio isn't our best. Both mics, especially Jason's, have a lot of echo going on. I did what I could to make it as listenable as possible but if it's too annoying I'll understand. I promise to have this fixed before we record the next one.For better or worse, Childish Gambino's Because the Internet acts as a time capsule of 2014 internet and pop culture. The album simultaniously feels nostalgic and also dated. Some stuff on this album has aged really well and still sound pretty fresh over a decade later. Lets just say the other stuff really feels like a product of its time. Regardless we had a lot of fun doing this episode and revisiting 2014 while discussing the album Donald Glover left Community for.The album I have is the deluxe edition with the holographic slip cover and the full script Glover wrote to accompany the album. The records themselves are a very nice 180g black pressing with a nicely trimmed flat edge around the disc. My only real gripes with this pressing are the fact that the LPs aren't labeled with side a/b markers and the slip cover makes it VERY easy to just straight up drop everything the second you pick it up. Other than that it's a very cool pressing that I like a lot.In the news corner this episode we talk all about the former guitarist of Turnstile who attempted to do a teensy bit of vehicular manslaughter on Turnstile's vocalist's dad and sister and a small child. Note that this episode was recorded before the guitarists recent court appearance.Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's IG/TikTok/YouTube - @MothraLunaJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSVHosted on Ausha. We're finally back for our first proper main episode in almost a full year so of course to make up for it we're doing a double album. Yellow & Green was a pretty ambitious and risky album for Baroness to put out in 2012, straying away from their sludge metal into something a little more spacey and chilled out.The version of the vinyl I have here is one of the many many many Relapse Records represses they pumped out for this album over the years. Specifically a yellow and green merge that merged a little too much and turned into a sorta pea soup color. Standard weight on the vinyl itself and nothing too special about the packaging outside of John Baizley's ever incredible artwork. In this episode we talk about where metal culture was at the time this album came out, I wax nostalgic about picking up this album from the FYE in the mall based on packaging alone a week after release, and we discuss the concept of "Elevated dad rock"The news corner this episode is all Chappell Roan and her brutal assault of a child in a public restaurant. Someone really has to do something about this lady. Hosted on Ausha. See ausha.co/privacy-policy for more information.

Ok this one might be a litttttle late but better late than never right?! That's right your eyes don't deceive you, you are seeing a brand new episode of MBFRC after nearly a year and what better way to come back than counting down our individual top 10 albums of last year. Even if it's not very timely it just felt like the right place to start. So help us get this podcast ball rollin again by looking back at the incredible music that came out in 2025.Hosted on Ausha. Oh we're back and it's probably the meanest we've been to an album on the show. Stone Sour's self titled debut is an ego-driven butt rock opus designed from start to finish to make you go "hey it's the guy from Slipknot." This album exists for one reason and one reason only; to make Corey Taylor a celebrity. Corey Taylor was upset that he had very little say in the writing process for Slipknot and he was alos upset that the meteoric success of Slipknot didn't come with my real celebrity because of the anonymous nature of Slipknot at the time. To fix this he decided to reform is original bar rock band Stone Sour with the dual goal of getting his name and face out in the public while also racking up radio hits that he could then take back to Slipknot to prove that he can write a successful song. A truly bizarre album that seems more like a marketing play to jump-start Corey Taylor as a brand rather that a pure artistic expression. The vinyl pressing I have here is a Record Store day repressing with alternate album artwork and a bonus live CD (which we did not listen to for this episode). It's a 180 gram pressing that sounds about as clean as you can hope for with a standard quality gatefold jacket. I picked it up from the half-off bin at Horizon Records years ago thinking it would be fun to revisit for nostalgia reasons and see if it holds up to my non-teenage ears. My conclusion? The second album was better. In the news corner today we take aim at the various bad actors, industry insiders, and of course Sharon Osbourne all coming together to tank the career of Irish rap group' KNEECAP for the crime of opposing the Israeli genocide of the Palestinian people during their Coachella performance. All of the usual "keep politics out of music" takes are here and just like always, they're dumb as hell and only seek to stifle speech that dares to question the imperial core. It's a fun one!Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's IG/TikTok/YouTube - @MothraLunaJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSVHosted by Ausha. Finally. An episode that is less than 2 hours long. It helps that this week we're covering Seizures in Barren Praise by grind/crust band Trap Them. The album is only 10 tracks and 25 minutes total. Compared to the last few episodes this one just BREEZES by! It also helps that Seizures in Barren Praise by Trap Them happens to be one of my favorite albums of all time. Illegally downloading this album from some guy's blogspot page when I was 16 started a snowball effect that would alter how I listened to heavy music going forward which made this a bit of a nostalgia trip for me. We also do our best to parse through the loose plot that makes up the concept of not only this album but all of Trap Them's music up to this point. The vinyl I have here I believe is a second pressing, standard weight on ultra clear vinyl. It comes in a nice enough trifold jacket which shows off the album's full artwork done by Converge vocalist Jacob Bannon. The album sounds perfectly fine. Minimal surface noise but if we're being honest, any surface noise would get lost in the chaos of the album anyway. I picked this up a few years ago used from Pharmacy Records in Greenville which is, for my money, the best place in the upstate to find metal/punk/hardcore records. We're lucky enough to have a few decent record stores here in the upstate but if you're into heavy music at all, Pharmacy is the one you wanna go to. In the news corner this week we check in with our old pal Tim Lambesis and see what his old band members are saying about him. Hint: it's not good. We also check in with what's going on with Death Grips and Andy Morin to see what a new band member is saying about him. Hint: It's not good.Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's IG/TikTok/YouTube - @MothraLunaJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSVHosted by Ausha. This week we're talking about probably the most consequential album in Nine Inch Nails' history. The Downward Spiral was a monumental success, widely considered to be a masterpiece. The Fragile was largely panned as being too bloated and self-indulgent (even if it is their best album imo). After that Trent Reznor took a full 6 years to produce an album and it needed to be a hit. With Teeth is a sharp, focused, lean product compared to The Fragile, and because of that was a massive success spawning many of their biggest hits. If you're around our age and just a casual listener, most of the NIN songs you know are probably from this album. In the news corner this week we cover a viral tiktok of some white kids being obnoxious during a rap concert. So business as usual.Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's IG/TikTok/YouTube - @MothraLunaJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSV Hosted by Ausha. Of course it's finally time for us to cover a Kendrick Lamar album and it happens to be the most divisive album of his career. Kenny came out of a 5 year hiatus following his most commercially successful album at the time, DAMN, and delivered a double album that is deeply personal and sometimes uncomfortable to listen to. We try to cover all of the various controversies surrounding this album, both fair and unfair. From accusations of transphobia to the questionable inclusion of Kodak Black. But also some of the best material of Kendrick's career to date.In the news corner this week we cover how the hardcore band Gel fell apart over money laundering and leaked nudes. Also it's a Kendrick episode so of course we had to give some updates to the ongoing Drake lawsuit. Strap in it's a long one!Hosted by Ausha. See ausha.co/privacy-policy for more information.

This week we discuss the 6th full length album from one of my favorite bands since my high school days. Revocation's Great is our Sin is a great album that somehow still manages to be somewhat underwhelming? We talk about how having a such a consistent catalog and album release schedule can actually hurt the final product even if the final product is actually very good. We also do our best to try and answer the question of what hyper specific type of extreme metal Revocation is. Too thrashy to be death metal. Too death metal to be thrash. Too riff focused to be progressive. Too groovy to be technical death metal. Who knows. Also this week in the news corner we do our best to go over the case of Oceano and the Stolen Poster Art as well as give you a sneak peak and early review of the next Clipping album which gets released March 14th but we got an advanced copy by preordering the album. Even though it's February already we're still stuck in 2024 over here finally counting down our favorite albums of the year as well as doing our best to recap the year in music with little to no preparation. It was a year of rap beefs, country artists topping the charts, non-country artists doing country to try and top the charts, Brat Summer, Doom Metal Winter, Sad Girl Autumn, so on and so forth. We try to cover the full gammut of music as we each countdown our individual top 10 albums of the year. So I guess it's really a top 20. Who cares we're back! Hosted by Ausha. OBS tried to stop us. A hurricane tried to stop us. My crippling ADD tried to stop us but we can't be stopped. We're back and we're covering obscure mid-2010s indie pop album In The Cards by Robert Delong. While still falling into some of the tropes of the EDM-tinged indie pop of it's time, In The Cards has enough personality and big enough hooks to stand above most of the artists in that crowd. Too bad it never quite reached the general public. In the news corner this week it's all about bands disrespecting the memories of their deceased lead singers. First we finally cover the storm of controversy around Emily Armstrong, the new vocalist of Linkin Park. Then we cover Power Trip going on tour opening for a certain band that Riley Gale would definitely NOT be happy with. That's right we're back baby. After a long hiatus we're finally covering the long promised Underneath by Code Orange. It's hard to understate how much of a splash this made in the metalcore and hardcore scenes when this album was first released. From the lead-up and promo, to what was probably the first lockdown-era live streamed concert for the release, to the subsequent "This band was the future of metal!" hype train that follows, I was on board 100% the entire time. It's also hard to understate how hard Code Orange has fumbled every subsequent creative decision since the release of this album and you better believe we talk about all of it. This week in the news corner you know we had to check in with our old friend Mr. Ronald Robinette Radke and break down his absolutely insane lawsuit against The Internet's Busiest Music Nerd, Anthony Fantano, for being a wittle to mean to him and hurting his feewings.Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's IG/TikTok/YouTube - @MothraLunaJason's Twitter - @FrequencyShiftsJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSV Hosted by Ausha. Our release schedule is all screwed up and based on vibes at this point so here's Episode 37, featuring even more Maynard James Keenan! This week we cover Maynard's jokey solo project Puscifer, which is neither fully a joke nor is it really a solo project. The more mellow, chilled out and synth-focused side project of the Tool frontman is often overlooked as a joke band that only exists for hardcore Tool fans, this episode goes a little deeper to figure out what the band's second album really has to offer. This week in the news corner we do an update on the ongoing beef between Drake and Kendrick however this was recorded before Kendrick's response track dropped. We also discuss the new Taylor Swift album for a bit before getting to our main story, metalcore being way too demonic!Hosted by Ausha. See ausha.co/privacy-policy for more information.

This week we take a look at The White Stripes' second to last, and possibly most controversial album, Get Behind Me Satan. This album has my favorite story of buying a record to date and we also go down a fun reddit rabbit hole trying to figure out who the people on the alternate vinyl cover are. This week in the news corner we start to talk about the current "big 3" rap beef and J. Cole's apology however we recorded this episode before the Drake song came out so this is a developing story. We also discuss the Liquid Death x ELF corpse paint collab which I use as an opportunity to get on my soapbox about how much I hate advertising.Twitter/Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's IG/TikTok/YouTube - @MothraLunaJason's Twitter - @FrequencyShiftsJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSV Hosted by Ausha. It's time to expand our minds and open our third eye as we finally dive into the only band that manages to be equal parts butt rock and prog rock. It's Tool Time folks and you know what that means. We're talkin time signatures, aliens, funky basslines, and deceptively emotional lyrics. Plus some of the funniest negative reviews we've had on the show so far. This week in the news corner we do a rapid fire round up of some (mostly death doom) albums that have come out recently before spending about 15 minutes giving our thoughts about the new Beyonce country album.Twitter/Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's IG/TikTok/YouTube - @MothraLunaJason's Twitter - @FrequencyShiftsJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSV

This week we continue to look at progressively heavier and heavier album with Gaza's chaotic, sludgy metalcore sophomore album He Is Never Coming Back from 2009. The very first vinyl I ever bought just so I could get a cool hoodie. We ever go into the problematic history of the band and the subsequent breakup that brought us another very cool sludgy metalcore band with Cult Leader. This week in the news corner we discuss whether or not Scowl are hypocrites for dropping out of SXSW but continuing to tour with A Day To Remember (spoiler: no). We also make fun of perpetual manbaby MGK having a little temper tantrum because people on twitter are posting jokes about his upcoming album.Twitter/Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's IG/TikTok/YouTube - @MothraLunaJason's Twitter - @FrequencyShiftsJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSV

This week on the pod we take a dive into the most extreme music we've covered on the show so far, Grindcore (sorta). As we take a look at the 13th studio album by UK grindcore legends Napalm Death. We do our best to untangle the intricacies and subtle differences between grindcore, deathgrind, and death metal as well as try to decipher what these woke libs are screaming about! In the news corner this week we look at one of the funnier Kanye stories in recent memory where he sent the twitch streamer Kai Cenat the wrong size sweatpants and then had his manager John Monopoly (real name) threaten Kai because the pants didn't fit. We discuss the second album from progressive post-hardcore emo band Coheed and Cambria, diving deep into not just the music but the comics and expansive, sometimes contradictory lore of The Amory Wars.In the news corner this week we talk about a tour designed exclusively for divorced dads, Kanye fans being ok with nazism but drawing the line at paying for music, and also cops at the pop punk show!RIP Blake HarrisonTwitter/Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's Twitter/IG - @AmandamoonchildAmanda's Art/moth IG - @SpicyPiscesCrisisJason's Twitter - @FrequencyShiftsJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSV
