Douglas Robinson discusses the journey that led to his new band Held. and celebrates its debut studio album, 'Grey.'
This week on Riff Worship, we explore the pivotal sophomore era of Coheed and Cambria. We'll trace the band's evolution from their early days in New York mixing punk, funk, and heavy metal as Shabütie to the moment they truly found their voice.Released on October 7th, 2003, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 served as the moment the band came into its own both musically and conceptually. In this episode, we'll discuss:The band's origins in Rockland County and the transition from early projects like Toxic Parents and Beautiful Loser. How the lineup solidified with Travis Stever, Mic Todd, and Josh Eppard, moving away from the "elaborated" structures of the Shabütie era toward a more intentional sound. How Claudio Sanchez began mastering his role as the narrator of The Amory Wars, continuing the sprawling sci-fi saga of the Kilgannon family and the shattered universe of Heaven's Fence. How this album stood alongside legendary scene releases from 2003 like The Mars Volta's De-Loused in the Comatorium and Thursday's War All The Time.Recommendations:Commitment - Fear OfMonolord - NeverendingFollow Riff WorshipInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/riffworshippod/Twitter: https://x.com/RiffWorshipPodYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@RiffWorshipPodCheck out our Official Playlists:Riffs on Repeat (Spotify)Riffs on Repeat (YouTube Music)Hits from the Crypt (Apple)
WITCH RIPPER's third album, "Through the Hourglass," showcases their ability to blend captivating melodies, catchy riffs, and various metal subgenres, aligning them with bands like MASTODON and BARONESS while also channeling influences like QUEEN and COHEED AND CAMBRIA. The album continues the narrative from their previous work, exploring themes of time and existence. Formed in Seattle in 2012, the band gained attention with their EP and debut album and achieved global recognition with their second release. They've toured with prominent rock and metal bands and are planning a U.S. tour and potential European shows to promote the new album, reinforcing that metal music remains vibrant.Official Links:Bandcamp: https://witchripper.bandcamp.com/Metal Archive: https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Witch_Ripper/3540359018Passionate about metal? Frank Senior ebenfalls. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Coheed and Cambria's low-end wizard, Zach Cooper, jumps on the pod to talk about how “sure, I'll come play bass on that” somehow turned into 14 years inside one of rock's most intense bands. We get into the strange chain of events that took him from a random studio call to full-time member status, plus what it really feels like when your life is buses, stages, foreign cities and a rotating cast of exhausted humans trying not to lose their minds together. From there we talk survival: how to stay sane in the touring pressure cooker, why the gym can save your brain, giving people grace when everyone's fried, and the moment you realize you've quietly become a grumpy dad yelling at traffic. There is dad energy, pineapple discourse, kid stories, and a lot of “okay, this is ridiculous but also kind of awesome” honesty about life on the road. And yes, we absolutely nerd out on gear. Zach walks through his evolution from a sketchy catalog bass to the rig he drags around the world now, with enough fuzz, octave and delay options to rattle a starship. If you like Coheed, loud rigs, road stories, or just want to feel better about the state of your own messy music room, you're gonna be into this one. This week we are giving a cheers to ten years! Join us as we celebrate the anniversary of the Old Smyrna Firehouse (InObscuria and Captain Content HQ). We get the inside scoop from the man himself on how this relic of a building was brought back to life to all of its firehouse glory and beyond. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Few bands in modern rock have built a world as distinct and devoted as Coheed and Cambria. At the heart of it is drummer Josh Eppard, whose playing has driven the band's sound for more than two decades. In a recent conversation with Derek Oswald, Josh spoke candidly about life on tour, the band's evolution, and the personal lessons he's carried along the way.

This Week on America's Podcast: Coheed and Cambria Strap on your space helmets and tighten your prog-rock seatbelts, because this week on America's Podcast, we descend into the melodically twisted, comic book-fueled universe of Coheed and Cambria—specifically, their tongue-twisting opus Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness. (Yes, that's the full title—breathe now.) We wrangled in the ever-insightful Favio Vegas to help us untangle this prog-rock Rubik's Cube. Is this album a poetic masterpiece that'll make you grab your 10-speed bike and ride toward destiny? Or does it leave you staring into the void, waiting to be Welcomed Home by better decisions? No spoilers—but expect plenty of interdimensional confusion, some mild existential dread, and a whole lotta guitar wizardry. Tracks of the Week slap harder than a caffeine crash at 4AM: Marc goes full nocturnal with “4am T.M.” by Heavy Bones—because nothing says productivity like insomnia and power chords. Jerry walks the straight and sinister path with “Devils Row” by The Reality of Yourself—spooky, soulful, and possibly cursed. Favio chooses the narrative path with “The Story” by Envy of None—turns out even envy has layers. And Mooger closes it out in true Mooger fashion with “I Might Let the Devil Win” by Sevendust—because sometimes, evil just has the better riff. So until next week: grab that 4am TM, start writing your own prog saga, and if you find yourself on Devil's Row… maybe just walk really fast. #coheedandcambria
