Summary: Like a bicycle kick goal at minute 95, Sara finally completes editing on a much overdue interview with fellow Carraville author HeyJulien ! Sara and Julien talk about the world of football RPF (as in soccer, for all you Yankees); specifically the delightfully odd-couple rivals-to-lovers ship of English football pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher. Other talking points scattered across the pitch include: football as war, derby days and football rivalry; the joys of local non-league football, the Bundesliga and fußballkultur; to switch POV, or not to switch POV; the annoying beauty of David Beckham; and of course, we discuss the tragically under-utilized in fic friendship of Paul Scholes and Gary Neville (or, Scholesy as the Kermit to Gary Neville's Miss Piggy). Join us, if you like! Correction - at 03:27:40 we incorrectly refer to our wonderful fellow Carraville author as ‘player1604'-- their handle is player1064, which is a reference to Gary Neville's England legacy number. Gary was the 1,064th player to play for England's National Team. Episode Notes A key part of Memphis history is its role in the Civil Rights Movement, particularly with the Sanitation Workers Strike that brought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr to Memphis and his untimely death. Like the city itself, the story of Civil Rights activism is often presented through a Black-White lens. Yet, Asians and Asian Americans have been in the South since at least the late 1700s and in Memphis since the late 1800s. How then do Asian Americans fit into the history of civil rights? And how does knowing that history then change how we think about race, rights, Asian Americans, and the South? To answer these questions and more, today I'm joined by Dr. Stephanie Hinnershitz, author of A Different Shade of Justice: Asian American Civil Rights in the South. She shares some of the complexities of Asian American legal cases during the 1880s to late twentieth century and reflects on some of the cases that didn't make it into the book but still offer important insights into civil rights. Dr. Stephanie Hinnershitz is an Assistant Professor of Security and Military Studies at the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. She is the author of Race, Religion, and Civil Rights: Asian Students on the West Coast, 1900-1968 (Rutgers University Press), A Different Shade of Justice: Asian American Civil Rights in the South (UNC Press), which won the Silver Nautilus Award for Journalism and Investigative Reporting, and Japanese American Incarceration: The Camps and Coerced Labor in World War II (University of Pennsylvania Press), which won the Philip Taft Labor History Award from the Labor and Working Class History Association and Cornell University Labor Relations School.

In this heart-wrenching yet inspirational episode of Sickboy, the boys sit down with Jeff, the husband of Samantha Price Mitchell, a tireless advocate for the metastatic breast cancer (mBC) community. Samantha's legacy lives on through "Turning the Page on Cancer," an annual fundraising campaign she created to support Rethink's Metastatic Breast Cancer (mBC) Fund. Samantha saw the need for a different approach in the fight against mBC, one that went beyond traditional "pink ribbon" norms. Jeff shares Samantha's incredible journey and discusses the importance of community involvement in this year's campaign launch. In this emotional and thought-provoking conversation. Some of the topics covered in this weeks episode include - The Unique Place of mBC: Jeff sheds light on the struggles faced by the mBC community and their sense of invisibility within the broader breast cancer landscape. Learn how Samantha's advocacy aimed to give them a voice and make their struggles heard. The Role of the Caregiver and Partner: Jeff opens up about the challenges he faced as a caregiver and partner, including the difficult decisions regarding overall survival and quality of life. His perspective offers invaluable insights into the intricacies of caring for a loved one with mBC. The Shit List - Rethink: We explore the critical work of Rethink in supporting those with mBC and how their initiatives are making a difference in the lives of patients and caregivers alike. Join the gang as they honor Samantha's memory and celebrate the incredible work she started through "Turning the Page on Cancer." Visual material culture, such as art, and other multimodal forms can elicit responses, emotions, and opinions—human expressions, tied to temporal and cultural aesthetics. This program explores how creative mediums provide context for history beyond dates, and names, and figures.Partnering with Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Chapman University, this series will explore how comics, comic books, and graphic novels from and about the Japanese American Incarceration following Executive Order 9066, humanize the tragic experience, allowing the stories to live long past the lives of those who experienced it, and ensuring this never happens again. Supported by the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program, a state-funded grant project of the California State Library, this series is designed to be a companion to the interactive web project, Images and Imaginings of Internment: Comics and Illustrations of Camp.Guest: Stephanie HinnershitzHosts: Jon-Barrett IngelsProduced by: Past Forward

Executive Order 9066, issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, stands out as a major affront to the promise of American liberty. In 1942, this executive order forced approximately 120,000 Japanese Americans out of their homes on the western coast, and incarcerated them in makeshift prisons all around the nation. Our guest today explains today that this was not only a case of civil rights being stripped from Americans, but labor rights as well. In these glorified concentration and work camps, agents of the U.S. government coerced Japanese Americans into doing hard and dangerous labor, for little-to-no compensation, sometimes even for the benefit of private, for-profit companies. This coerced labor was justified by the rhetoric of the U.S. government, even as the imprisoned resisted and persevered. Leading this week's conversation on coerced labor during WW2 is Dr. Stephanie Hinnershitz, award winning author and historian of Japanese American incarceration, civil-military relations, and race on the American wartime homefront. Stephanie Hinnershitz is a historian and author specializing in the American home front during World War II. She has written 3 books and became a Senior Historian with the Institute for the Study of War and Democracy at The National WWII Museum in New Orleans in 2021. Dad “A Novel” with Steve Manchester From bestselling storyteller Steven Manchester comes new book release ‘DAD' Three generations of dads, playing traditional roles in each other's lives, arrive simultaneously at significant crossroads. The decisions they make and the actions they take will directly – and eternally – affect each other. After a life of hard work and raising children, Robert is enjoying his well-deserved retirement when he discovers that he has an illness he might not be able to beat. At 19, Jonah is sprinting across the threshold of adulthood when he learns, stunningly, that he's going to become a father. And Oliver – Robert's son and Jonah's dad – has entered middle age and is paying its demanding price. While reconciling the time and effort it has taken him to reach an unfulfilling career and an even less satisfying marriage, he realizes that it's imperative that he keep it all together for the two men who mean everything to him. When different perspectives lead to misunderstandings that remain unspoken – sometimes for years – it takes great strength and even more love to travel beyond the resentment. Dad: A Novel chronicles the sacred legacy of fatherhood. Bio: After returning home from a difficult tour of duty in Operation Desert Storm in 1991, I stepped back behind the walls of a Massachusetts penitentiary where I battled each day as a prison investigator. Needless to say, there was great negativity in my life at that time, and very little opportunity to heal from my wartime demons (or pursue my dreams of being published). I finally decided to return to college to finish my degree in Criminal Justice. During one of the classes, my professor, Barry McKee, detailed police work, but barely touched on other topics. I finally raised his hand and asked, “As the criminal justice system is so vast, what about the courts, probation, parole – corrections?” Barry smiled and told me to see him after class. I thought I'd done it! In his office, Barry explained, “Except from the slanted perspectives of inmates, there's no real written material out there on corrections, or prisons.” Barry smiled again and then dropped the bomb that would change my life forever. “If you're so smart,” he said, “why don't you write it?” It was the last push I needed to get writing. Nine months later, I placed the first draft of 6-5; A Different Shade of Blue (under the pen name, Steven Herberts) on Barry's desk. From then on, I was hooked. I was a writer. Today, 25 years later, I am the author of four #1 national bestsellers: Twelve Months, The Rockin' Chair, Pressed Pennies and Gooseberry Island. My long-anticipated, critically-acclaimed novel, The Changing Season, has just been released. I'm also the author of the award-winning novel, Goodnight, Brian, while my work has appeared on NBC's Today Show, CBS's The Early Show, CNN's American Morning and BET's Nightly News. Three of my short stories were selected “101 Best” for Chicken Soup for the Soul series and I'm the produced playwright of Three Shoeboxes. http://www.stevenmanchester.com/ Call In and Chat with Deborah during Live Show: 833-220-1200 or 319-527-2638 Learn more about Deborah here: www.lovebyintuition.com

Les, Kurt, and Jason love themselves an over-the-top Lifetime movie, but this one may not have lived up to expectations. The Blac Chyna news also left something to be desired as it was not so much “news” as much as it was “a piece of information that is barely notable.” Then Jason goes on a rant about about DVD waste before the guys join the sex trafficking ring cooked up in Lifetime's Desperate Widows. The movie was formerly known as Mommune as in “mommy commune” as in a movie that truly tests Les and Kurt's patience. On the one hand, the movie has a hot dad and hotter handyman, but on the other hand we never meet the dad and the handyman may or may not be a (helpful) mute. This is a movie that's all about side hustles where sex trafficking is basically the same as opening an Etsy store, albeit one that leads to potential HR violations. In her recent book, A Different Shade of Justice: Asian American Civil Rights in the South (University of North Carolina Press, 2017), Stephanie Hinnershitz (Cleveland State University) examines the important but overlooked contributions of Asian Americans to civil rights activism in the U.S. South. Hinnershitz takes a thematic focus across the long 20th century to show how Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos, Vietnamese, and South Asians contested discrimination in land ownership, education, sexual relations and marriage, and business entrepreneurship. From “self-Orientalizing” as non-colored people to invoking their privileges as foreign nationals or refugees, the strategies and arguments that Asian Americans employed in the long and uneven struggle for equality were as varied as they were creative. Hinnershitz uses a wide-ranging source base including legal opinions, newspapers, and oral histories to narrate heartbreaking losses as well as surprising victories, such as the injunction against Klan violence that Vietnamese fishermen won in Texas in 1981. A Different Shade of Justice will interest readers of 20th-century US history, legal history, southern history, and Asian American history. Ian Shin is C3-Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow and Lecturer in the History Department at Bates College, where his teaching and research focus on the history of the U.S. in the world and Asian American history. He is currently completing a book manuscript on the politics of Chinese art collecting in the United States in the early 20th century. Ian welcomes listener questions and feedback at kshin@bates.edu.

Bienvenidos a La Hora Faniática.
