Surprise! The Third Men Podcast is back from the mind shaft, connected by brotherly love (ew) and ready with an all-new episode that will take you for a stroll down memory lane. Specifically, whatever memory lane Ezmerelda is on. This is an installment of the show that we're calling BOARDING HOUSE REVISITED, wherein your humble co-hosts will take a look back at Jack White's divisive, genre-bending, and quintessentially WEIRD third solo album Boarding House Reach. In 2018, we here at the Third Men Podcast were so excited to have a new record from Jack White, that in retrospect our reactions to that record were perhaps somewhat colored by the environment around us. Well, we're here to give this whacky record a fresh listen, featuring live commentary for your ears only ...and with a surprising amount of clarity given the time that has passed since its release. So join us, won't you? We're happy to be back -- even if we are, indeed, totally absurd. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We're connected...by Rob! The Third Men Podcast is back with an all-new extended interview with returning guest and Jack White artwork guru Rob Jones! It's been six years and four studio albums since last we spoke to the animalrummy, and in this episode we'll do our best to make up for lost time. Artwork and design for Boarding House Reach, Help Us Stranger, Fear of the Dawn and Entering Heaven Alive are all covered, plus behind the scenes stories and insider info you'll not get anywhere else. We'd like to thank Rob for joining us on the show again and hope you all enjoy this special fall episode with one of our favorite people this side of Incitatus. Hosted on Acast. The Third Men podcast is excited to welcome to the show (for the first time!) the extraordinary guitarist, composer and oft-Third Man Records collaborator Mr. William Tyler. In this all-new extended interview, we'll talk with William about his incredible career - from solo albums to secret origins and everything in between. We'll also deep-dive into the ever-changing landscape of Nashville, what Third Man has meant to the city since planting its flag there nearly 15 years ago, and of course William's musical connections to Jack white - both through several live TMR releases as well as opening for Jack during the Boarding House Reach tour in 2018. We'd like to thank William Tyler for joining us on the show, and hope you all enjoy this interview as much as we enjoyed conducting it! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This episode explores the return of the Raconteurs with their third album, Help Us Stranger. We then take a listen through Boarding House Reach, the third solo album by Jack White, a wild departure from the known.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. Coming out as a blues rock, punk aesthetic garage rock band with child-like drummer Meg White, The White Stripes paved the way for a lot of acts to come. As their success grew, Jack White branched out into other projects, including the classic rock inspired "super group" The Raconteurs, and Led Zeppelin-spirit revival, hard as nails "super group," The Dead Weather. As Jack gained momentum elsewhere, The White Stripes came to an end, leaving room for Jack White to explore a solo career. Throughout his solo career, he started honing his comfort material -- country, blues, and fuzz rock -- moving toward new grounds with experimental noise, high tech production, and unexpected plot twists.Tyler, being a conseur of pop and knower of all things music, and Greg, a Jack White super fan, have a lot to say on Jack White, including a plethora of insights and context into the creation of this music, the cultural impact of Jack White and his embedded philosophies, and the growth of self and artist.
Our special series on the music of Jack White wraps up with a look at the 2022 two album releases, Fear of the Dawn and Entering Heaven Alive. Fear of the Dawn is much closer of a follow up to the experimentation we loved on Boarding House Reach. Entering Heaven Alive takes a more mellow approach, with acoustic aesthetic and jazz influence.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. On this episode of the Blind Tiger Record Club Podcast, David W. Williams and Kevin Lee discuss the May Rock & Alternative Record Of The Month, Jack White - Fear of the Dawn. The album is discussed and clips of songs from the album are played. It is a great introduction to both the artist and the album. We discuss White's career from the White Stripes to his solo work as well as his side projects, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather. We talk about his experimental production process as well as his almost "free flow" writing style on both Fear of the Dawn and his last solo album, Boarding House Reach. We dig in on singles, charts, and White's overall impact on rock and alternative music over the last twenty years. Williams and Lee also discuss the recent Hall of Fame Inductees including , Pat Benatar, Duran Duran, the Eurythmics, Eminem, and other 2022 inductees. Whether or not you are a member of Blind Tiger Record Club, the B.T.R.C. Podcast is a great way to get introduced to some new artists and discover some albums that you may not be familiar with. The last we heard from Jack White, he seemed to be midst of the artistic equivalent of a mid-life crisis with his 2018 album Boarding House Reach. But with his new LP Fear Of The Dawn, White has adopted a sense of indifference, resulting in a surprisingly captivating effort. On the latest Indiecast episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen review White's new album (29:49) and share their thoughts on Father John Misty's latest LP, Chloë And The Next 20th Century (39:14).In other indie news this week, the Grammys once again proved their waning relevance by awarding Jon Batiste Album Of The Year (:26). Plus, Steven and Ian share their thoughts on Wet Leg's much-hyped self-titled debut album (7:13), which they both liked and disliked more than expected. They also cast their votes for artists who made their favorite Q1 albums (20:25), including Big Thief, Nilüfer Yanya, Black Country New Road, and The Weeknd. This week's Recommendation Corner (49:02) has Ian giving props to Brooklyn band Tree River. Steven gives a shout out to Austin-based band Good Looks, whose debut LP Bummer Year is out now.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. We're reaching, and retching this week as we take a deep dive into Jack White's version of a musical midlife crisis, 2018's Boarding House Reach. Vocoder, hot topic spoken word poetry and RAPPING all make an appearance on this bloated collection of song stems, incoherent rambles, and riffless meandering sonic slogs that sound like the last gasps of a former musical genius. Most damning of all is the fact that more than half the songs aren't even songs at all - a far cry from the tight, furtive garage rock of Mr. White's heyday. It's sure to disappoint you as much as it did us, so reach around and hold on tight. It's bound to be a bumpy ride.

All right, everyone - get ready to seize some delicious pod noise! We've got the real deal this week: the band Radkey is here to talk all things rock, cat and Jack in an all-new extended interview! Our favorite rock and roll mavericks are back with an excellent new LP, Green Room, available now and which carries the group's signature high-voltage sound to a whole other level. From the melodic heights of Bend and Seize to the downright raucous cover of Ain't No Sunshine, Radkey continues to push the boundaries of modern rock with a wink, a nod, and a seltzer water sip. Third Man fans also know Radkey for their amazing opening act performances for Jack White on the Boarding House Reach tour back in 2018, and we've got Isaiah, Dee and Solomon here to give us all the details on that amazing experience. The guys also give us their unique insight into the state of the rock world today, music in the time of Covid, why major record labels are not always what they're cracked up to be and why the good folks at Mastercard think Keith Moon played off-beat. So come with us into crackerbox palace for one of the most fun extended interviews we've ever had the pleasure of conducting! Thanks to the Radkey guys for joining us and be sure to pick up Green Room! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today we’re coming at you with another music episode! On the table today we’ve got Jonathan Coulton’s Artificial Heart and Jack White’s Boarding House Reach, two very distinct and different albums in the alt-rock scene. Break out those Yondr pouches, because the show's about to start! Ladies and gentlemen and everyone in-between, the Third Men podcast is proud to present: Jack's Opening Acts! In this first edition of a new on-going series, your humble co-hosts will take you on a tour of Jack White's solo tours, through the lens of his various opening acts - some famous, some up-and-coming, but all memorable in their own ways. For the Blunderbuss, Lazaretto and Boarding House Reach tours, Third Man set about showcasing a wide range of talent, including but not limited to artists in its very own roster. While the expected openers may have been more mainstream rocker acts like Alabama Shakes and Cold War Kids, Jack's solo tours also carried with them a wide range of genre and style - such as hip hop (Run The Jewels, Shirt), country (Joshua Hedley, Loretta Lynn), zone-out instrumental (William Tyler) and many more. In this episode we cover them all, including a very special guest this week in Isaiah Radke, whose band Radkey opened for Jack on the Boarding House Reach tour in 2018! We were thrilled to have Isaiah on the show, and we hope you all enjoy the interview as much as we enjoyed conducting it! So get those tickets ready, there's a rock show coming at you!

You're cordially invited to join the Third Men podcast for a special look back at the incredible year that was 2018! After years without an album of new material, the infamous Jack-drought saw its end this past year and the age of Boarding House Reach was upon us. Jack White fans got a world tour, a new album, a fever-pitched press circuit, a documentary film and enough vault content to shake a dynamite blast at! Not to mention new music from a host of Third Man Records recording artists such as the Grammy Award-nominated Margo Price, honky tonk legend Joshua Hedley and many more. Of course the icing on the 2018 cake came in the form of the triumphant return of The Raconteurs, reunited to release their first new music in a decade. It was quite a year, and the third men deep-dive into all 365 days in a manner totally absurd! Plus we welcome very special guests this week, Tobias and Julia from After the Money is Gone (ATMIG) who are set to debut their full length album "Wishes", which will be pressed at the Third Man Records Pressing Plant. We've got a lot to get to, so let all those old acquaintances be forgot and never brought to the mind-shaft - for auld lang syne! Or whatever those lyrics are! Jack White launched his 2018 tour last week with shows in Detroit and Milwaukee, which made Jack fans here in Chicago say, “Detroit and Milwaukee but not us?” We just have to wait until August, to be touched by his Boarding House Reach when Jack headlines Lollapalooza, Marty Lennartz and XRT Digital Producer Marty Rosenbaum didn’t have the patience to wait. They packed up the car and right after work on Friday and hit the highway to sit in rush hour traffic and make our way slowly up to Brewtown to see Jack play at The Eagles Club. The trip gave them plenty of time to talk and the two preview and review one of the first shows of Jack White's lengthy tour.
This week we discuss Boarding House Reach, Or More; the Frustration, and Isolation with special guest Bea! Does Jack White still have an edge in guitar playing? Does Kali Uchis make a splash with her debut album? Does Mick Jenkins rank in top five rappers? We discuss this and more, including a bitter debate over Nicki and Cardi.

Jack White's reverence for classic music of the past is still a big part of who is he here on Boarding House Reach; he's just shifting focus with a more manic and multi-faceted approach. "Boarding House Reach" is an utterly unique Jack White album — made with the assistance of ProTools, it's as layered and overstuffed as the White Stripes were austere and straight-forward. Unsurprisingly, some people love it and some people hate it. Steve falls on the love side, while his guest, Pitchfork senior reviews editor Jeremy Larson, definitely leans to the not-love side. So is this record a fun curveball or a confused mess? Could it possibly be both?

Jack White has always gone against the grain, drawing on the minimalism of early blues and analogue recording for The White Stripes when everyone else was going digital. His third solo record Boarding House Reach is packed to the rafters with new sounds and colourful characters. He speaks to Kirsten Johnstone.

s the world waits for a new Jack White album with a drastically different sound, The Third Men Podcast looks back at the last drastic departure for Jack White: The Dead Weather. Following the towering success of both the long-established White Stripes and the hit-making "super"-group The Raconteurs, the last thing anyone expected Jack White to do was to launch a third group in which he would take a back seat to a front woman whose charism could easily match his own. It's the kind of left turn that gave us the Dead Weather, the psychedelic goth-rock that divided fans and baffled listeners nearly a decade before "Boarding House Reach". In this episode we take a look at how Jack rolled this new group out, and the steps a growing (and learning) Third Man Records took as a newly-christened storefront and self-supporting record label, to a stumbled LP release and premature concert dates! Also in this episode we're joined by Third Man of the week, musician, singer and songwriter Connor Flynn, aka Black Jack Davey, who discusses his latest release "Meet Black Jack Davey"! Will there be enough water when this podcast comes in? Yes, yes there will. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
