UNLOCKED: we've decided to share this interview with writer Toby Manning that we originally distributed to patrons in May 2025. To hear dozen more bonus episodes on a vast array of topics, visit Patreon.com/LoveMessagePod to become a patron. In this episode we welcome writer Toby Manning to the show to discuss his recent book Mixing Pop and Politics: A Marxist History of Popular Music. Toby's book offers a political reading of popular music, taking as its methodological starting point the songs found in the charts from the 1950s to the present day, to explore how the music people listen to reflects and resists the politics of their time in fascinating ways.In this show Jeremy, Tim and Toby discuss the charts themselves, how we think of 'popular music', and discuss lyrics as a tool for analysis. This being LITM, we of course spend some time on the hits of the 1970s, but we hear also about '80s synth pop and yacht rock, Annie Lennox, MJ, and contemporary artists like FKA Twigs and Little Sims. Also found inside: the GLC, the High Sixties and Kneecap.

No somos salvajes, no somos animales, somos humanos y somos americanos . Colin Peters presents... PUNK ROCKY 2025 THE CIRCLE IS NOW COMPLETE... This is the final mix in my end-of-2025 trilogy series, and it's a full-speed mash of rock, post-punk, indie rock, synthpop and d&b from last year. It wouldn't be a mix of mine without the odd detour, this time back to 1985 for Septimo Sello - Espacio Vacio. There's additional Spanish hot sauce from Corte!, Peligro!, and Vicente Calderon, joining the international sounds of Dry Cleaning, Wet Leg, Viagra Boys, IDLES, FKA Twigs, Lambrini Girls, Kneecap and 2026 twist from A$AP Rocky. . Colin Peters presents... PUNK ROCKY 2025.
Colin and Mike discuss the album discography of art-pop entrepreneur: FKA twigs.
You thought we'd get out of 2025 without at least one more Nicolas Cage movie? You were wrong! This time around, Nicolas Cage stars in THE CARPENTER'S SON, a film loosely based on the childhood of Jesus Christ, framed as a horror movie. Featuring Cage as Joseph (aka The Carpenter), Noah Jupe as Jesus (aka The Boy), and FKA Twigs as Mary (aka The Mother).

New York-based classically trained composer and musician Kelly Moran's music draws on everything from classical to dance to metal, but ends up sounding like none of those. She has become known for her music for prepared piano – a regular piano whose strings have things like metal or wood placed on the strings to alter the sound. Moran has also worked with electronic keyboards, and has recorded music for unaltered, completely acoustic piano. (She has also composed for classical musician Margaret Leng Tan, toured with Oneohtrix Point Never and FKA Twigs, and worked with other visionary contemporaries like Kelsey Lu and Yves Tumor.) Her 2025 record, Don't Trust Mirrors (Warp Records), combines all three kinds of keyboards. Kelly Moran has brought her audio interface, her tools, and her bags of screws and bolts. She has prepared our piano, and plays in-studio. Set list: 1. Don't Trust Mirrors 2. Prism Drift 3.

Hot damn, it's a NEW, in theaters, Nic Cage movie. Lotfy (totally not Lofty) Nathan's new movie about the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, kinda, and exploring the life and times of angsty teen Jesus. Oh wait, sorry, "The Boy". Nic Cage plays a SoCal style father figure while FKA Twigs purses her lips really hard. Will Nick keep his oath? Are devils chickens? Mouthy ones only today. This is Cage Match.Intro music by: Bill Panks

This week on BEHIND THE LENS, it's all about mysteries thanks to director STEPHEN SHIMEK talking about MURDER AT THE EMBASSY, and writer/director LOTFY NATHAN discussing THE CARPENTER'S SON. But first, let's take a little trip to Cairo with director STEPHEN SHIMEK and MURDER AT THE EMBASSY. The second film in the Miranda Greene franchise, this story is fun, and the film is as entertaining as it is beautiful, as it drenches you in the beauty and wonder of Egypt. Set in 1930s Cairo with pyramids and antiquities at the height of Egyptology and archaeology, private detective Miranda Green is called to investigate a suspicious murder inside Cairo's seemingly impenetrable British Embassy when she discovers a second crime has been committed that could spark war across the globe. Everyone within the walls of the embassy is a suspect, but the ultimate evil force is lurking right around the corner. Directed by STEPHEN SHIMEK and written by Mark Brennan, MURDER AT THE EMBASSY stars Mischa Barton, Mido Hamada, Kojo Attah, Nell Barlow, Raha Rahbari, Antonia Bernath, and Richard Dillane. Now let's switch gears and talk about another type of mystery with writer/director LOTFY NATHAN and THE CARPENTER'S SON. Not your cut-and-dry faith-based or historical religious film, Lotfy pushes the envelope here as he draws from the apocryphal Infancy Gospel of Thomas for this story. This is a film that has already drawn some ire in the Christian community as it is developed from the apocryphal Infancy Gospel of Thomas about the childhood of Jesus and fills in the New Testament canonical gospels, often clashing with some of those accepted writings. A powerful and fascinating film that is exquisitely made. And did I mention it stars Nic Cage as Jesus' father, the carpenter Joseph? Written and directed by LOTFY NATHAN, THE CARPENTER'S SON stars Nic Cage as "The Carpenter", Noah Jupe as "The Boy" aka Jesus, and FKA Twigs as "The Mother" aka Mary. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Faithspotting hosts Kenny Dickson and Mike Hatch review and spot faith elements in the film The Carpenter's Son by director Lotfy Nathan. Included in the episode is Mike and Kenny's interview with Lotfy Nathan. The Carpenter's Son is based on the apocryphal text, The Infancy Gospel of Thomas. The text is a collection of non-canonical stories of Jesus during the years He and Mary and Joseph were in exile in Egypt. The stories depict the struggle of the Holy Family as Jesus becomes aware of his differences and as he grows into his divinity. Collected in the 2nd or 3rd centuries, the stories are not considered part of the Biblical canon but reflect tradition and perhaps curisosity of followers about the childhood of Jesus. The film has been called a "Jesus horror film" by many, and while aknowledging it's darkness, Nathan considers it more of a spiritual and perhaps theological thriller. The film stars Nicolas Cage as the Carpenter, (Joseph) Noah Jupe as the boy (Jesus), FKA Twigs as the Mother (Mary) and Isla Johnston as the stranger (Satan) and Souheila Yacoub as Lilith. Faith Spotted: Discussion about the Infancy Gospel of Thomas within the Christian tradition. How imagining the full meaning of Jesus's full humanity and divinity, and the struggles beyond his ministry and crucifixion can strengthen one's relationship with Christ and one's faith. Imagining what is was like to be Jesus's parents, especially for Joseph to be his earthly, stepfather. Through the interview there is an opportunity to hear about director Lotfy Nathan and his Biblical and theological awareness growing up in the Coptic Orthodox tradition, and how he seeks to use those lessons in sharing this story. The film speaks to people of fith who have doubts ander when God seems to be silent and absent in the midst of struggles in life.

A trip into Trance - the dance music genre that launched a thousand cheesy synth lines and Euphoria compilations. Music journalist Niamh O'Connor (DJ Mag, AlphaTheta, Mixmag, Resident Advisor, Discogs) joins us to discuss how trance music is the sound of an Irish summer, and hyperlocally in Dun Laoghaire specifically. What is trance music? Trance music was primarily formed by producers in Germany, Netherlands and the Benelux countries in the early 90s where producers like German DJ Sven Väth fused techno-style beats with euphoric melodies, inspired by his time in Goa in india and listening to psychedelia. Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Tiësto and Ferry Corsten are some of the producers who were at the beginning of the genre. Trance is hypnotic, euphoric, bombastic and bright – making use of repetitive overpoweringly melodic arpeggio synth lines paired with percussive builds, drops and trance gates to induce – the trance state – a musical attempt to replicate the altered euphoric state of mind, and the feeling of being high in the club a aided by ecstasy and mind-altering drugs. Darude's ‘Sandstorm' is trance. Tiesto's ‘Adagio For Strings' is trance, Alice Deejay's ‘Better Off Alone' is trance. Robert Miles' ‘Children' is trance. Gigi D'Agostino's ‘L'Amour Toujours' is trance. The Big Brother theme song is trance. Niamh joins us to enthuse about her favourite trance tunes, and talk to us about the DJs who are dropping trance in their sets these days. We go on a history of trance music, trance in an Irish context, leading through the '90's to the chart poptrance, psytrance and recent music influenced by Trance from FKA Twigs, Burial, Oklou and Danny L Harle. Pencil skirt. Kitten heels. Tiny glasses. And a little dark edge. These are just some of the elements of one of the most enduring fashion trends of the past couple of years: the office siren. But we're not just seeing this twist on office norms in fashion: we're also seeing it in TV shows like Severance and Industry, and with musicians like The Dare and FKA Twigs. So what are people expressing by reimagining office fashions? Brittany is joined by NPR's Life Kit producer Margaret Cirino to discuss the "freakification" of office wear — its long lineage in fashion, and what office tensions this trend is speaking to right now.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
