How do you follow-up an album like BRAT? This episode breaks down Charli XCX's growing momentum post-BRAT and the new demographic of fans she's pulled in. With so many new eyes and the opposite expectation for this era, I'm discussing what her next move can be and how a lot of other pop acts like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga pulled off creative pivots at the height of commercial success to sustain longevity. Plus, I'm going to discuss the seven films Charli XCX is working on, and how her own unique sound she explored across BRAT may not feel "unique" if she follows up with a similar sound. Find @vinyldropodcast on Instagram, and of course... Let me know what you think is in store for Charli XCX's next project.
This week, Just Call Me James and Chandler Phillips dive headfirst into the neon-soaked, chaotic world of Hyperpop—the genre that's as addictive as it is polarizing. Is it the sound of late-stage capitalism, a queer counter-culture revolution, or just musical chaos? Let's find out.
Movie of the Year: 2024Album of the YearWhy the 2024 Album of the Year MattersWelcome to the Movie of the Year podcast, where we explore the most impactful cultural moments in entertainment. In this episode, we dive deep into the 2024 Album of the Year, highlighting the biggest artists, defining music trends, and the controversies that shaped the industry. Whether you're a longtime music fan or just catching up on the latest hits, this discussion will give you an inside look at the music that defined 2024.Major Artists Behind the 2024 Album of the YearThe 2024 Album of the Year featured some of the biggest names in the industry. Taylor Swift continued her reign with another chart-topping release, while Beyoncé pushed boundaries with her innovative sound. Rising stars like Olivia Rodrigo and SZA cemented their places in the industry, delivering emotionally charged albums that resonated with fans worldwide. Meanwhile, veteran artists such as Adele and Kendrick Lamar made triumphant returns, proving that musical excellence knows no age limit.Key Music Trends in 2024The music industry in 2024 saw an exciting blend of genres and innovations that shaped the year's sound. Hyperpop and AI-generated music gained significant traction, merging technology with human creativity. Nostalgia played a key role, with influences from the 90s and early 2000s making a comeback, bringing back R&B-infused beats and grunge-inspired aesthetics. Genre-blending also defined the year, with country-rap crossovers, electronic-infused rock, and Latin rhythms dominating the charts. The 2024 Album of the Year contenders reflected these evolving trends, proving that music remains diverse and unpredictable.Controversies Surrounding the 2024 Album of the YearNo year in music is complete without its share of controversies, and 2024 was no exception. The rise of AI-generated music sparked debates about artistic authenticity and copyright laws. Additionally, high-profile feuds between artists played out on social media, keeping fans engaged in heated discussions. The 2024 Album of the Year nominees weren't immune to drama, with some facing backlash over cultural appropriation, questionable lyrics, and surprise album leaks. These controversies only added to the intrigue, making the awards season one of the most talked-about in recent history.Join the Conversation on the 2024 Album of the YearThe 2024 Album of the Year represents more than just great music—it captures the essence of an era. From boundary-pushing artists to evolving trends and headline-making controversies, this year's music landscape was one for the history books. A jam-packed episode of No Tags this week, but we had a lot to catch up on. Central Cee's debut album Can't Rush Greatness is out (02:56) and it's UK drill's biggest album to date, almost by default. Eusexua (10:07) might be the record that finally sells us on FKA twigs? And we talk about the grey zones of desire in Babygirl over in film corner (18:32).But then onto the main event: we're joined this week by NYC DJ and virtual pop architect umru (30:09). A key member of SoundCloud's class of the mid-2010s, umru officially graduated to the hyperpop top tier in 2017 with his work on Charli XCX's game-changing Pop 2 mixtape. He's since worked with the likes of Hannah Diamond, Tommy Cash, Hyd, Dorian Electra and more while releasing his own music on PC Music and, this year, LuckyMe. He's also one of our favourite DJs, with an anything-goes approach that feels firmly in the legacy of faves like Total Freedom, Evian Christ and Ryan Hemsworth. We also talked about his past life running parties on Minecraft, leak culture, pop's Splice era, and the link between PC Music and Pirates of the Caribbean.A little housekeeping: after a small delay the second pressing of No Tags: Conversations on underground music culture should be arriving in the next week, so if you missed out the first time, head to Shopify to place your order. In the meantime, if you're enjoying No Tags, please do rate, review and subscribe on your podcast app of choice. We'd also ask you to consider subscribing to our paid tier, which costs £5 a month and helps us continue planning, recording, editing and transcribing podcasts like this one. Camila Cabello's "CXOXO" album kicked off with a hyper pop-tinged lead single, immediately causing comparisons to Charli XCX. This episode discusses how goalposts in pop music are changing as music becomes more conversational online and less about Top 40 appeal. We explore how Camila's artistic pivot isn't about chasing another Señorita or Havana, but about carving a niche within online music stans. Despite high-profile features with Drake and Lil Nas X, slick production from Jasper Harris, and tabloid buzz surrounding Sabrina Carpenter and Shawn Mendes, the album struggles to stick the landing. Is the issue tied to the music itself, the crowded year, albums like "BRAT" in similar lanes, or is something else at play? Tune in as we dissect CXOXO, uncover key moments, and leave you with the tools to form your own verdict.

Nicht weniger als «the biggest, greatest rock album of the 21st century» soll «Perfect Saviors» laut Sänger Tony Wolksi sein.

Taking as a starting point Renaissance and Medieval music, Lisel (aka Eliza Bagg – a member of vocal group Roomful of Teeth), creates hybrid music that blends her classical vocal training with electronic production techniques found in hyperpop (like the ‘bass drop' and frequent use of Auto-Tune.) Lisel has absorbed the capabilities of technology into her own music through experiments with Ableton, adding ambient electric sounds and aesthetics, and goes for maximalist sound on Patterns for Auto-Tuned Voices and Delay. Running Ableton, and a Novation Launch Pad for the processing effects, Eliza Bagg, as Lisel, performs some of these studio creations, live on New Sounds. - Caryn Havlik
