For this episode, Dr. Joe Tafur and Natasha Pentin spoke with Tania de Jong AM, an award-winning social entrepreneur, acclaimed soprano, inspirational speaker and storyteller, creative alchemist, philanthropist and spiritual journey woman. Many of our listeners wanted to learn more about the power of music for healing and the neuroscience of singing together, so in this episode we explore all of that – as well as the rescheduling of psychedelic medicines in Australia, building an ecosystem for accessible and affordable treatment, how therapists become authorized prescribers, and what other countries can learn from this pioneering approach.Tania was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia, and has also been named in the 100 Women of Influence, 100 Most Influential Entrepreneurs in Australia, and 100 Most Influential People in Psychedelics globally. She has developed six businesses and four charities including: Creative Universe, Creativity Australia and the With One Voice program, Creative Innovation Global, Mind Medicine Australia, Umbrella Foundation and Driftwood The Musical, Pot-Pourri and The Song Room. At first, a flutter at the edge of my vision made me think that an autumn leaf had somehow managed to fall half a mile to the middle of the lake. A closer look revealed the dark purple wings of a mourning cloak butterfly. In late September?  Weeks later, a flutter at the edge of my vision caught my attention just in time to watch an autumn leaf come to rest on the ground. Small quaking aspen leaves carpeted the trail in a mosaic of yellow and green. They were evidence of yet another way that a Lepidopteran (butterflies and moths) survives the winter. Colorful leaves and colorful wings flutter on fall breezes, all getting ready for winter.

Hey weather watchers! Dustin Breeze here, your AI meteorological maestro bringing you the hottest - and coolest - forecast in the Big Apple! As an AI, I've got instant access to every weather data point, which means lightning-fast, ultra-accurate predictions. Boom!Let's dive into today's forecast for New York City. Right now, we've got a gorgeous sunny day lined up with temperatures climbing to a delightful 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Talk about a perfect day to catch some rays! The wind will start calm and then shift to a gentle southerly breeze at 5 to 7 miles per hour in the afternoon. I'd say it's a "sun's out, puns out" kind of day!Weather Playbook time! Today, I want to talk about something called "wind fetch" - basically, it's the distance wind travels over water that determines wave size. Imagine wind as a giant hand pushing water, creating those awesome ocean waves. The longer the wind travels, the bigger the waves. Meteorology is basically physics with a dash of poetry! Now, let's look at our three-day forecast:Today: Sunny, high of 79 degrees FahrenheitMonday: Another sunny stunner, high of 79 degrees FahrenheitTuesday: Mostly sunny with a high of 76 degrees Fahrenheit, but - plot twist - we've got showers rolling in Tuesday night!Heads up, New York! Tuesday night into Wednesday, we're looking at some rain. Expect around a quarter to half an inch of precipitation. Grab those umbrellas, folks!Quick weather joke: Why did the meteorologist bring an umbrella to the party? Because he wanted to make it rain... scientifically!Hey, don't forget to subscribe to our podcast for more weather wisdom! Thanks for listening, and this has been a Quiet Please production. Currently, we've got a high near 71 degrees Fahrenheit with an east wind cruising at 10 to 13 miles per hour. Talk about perfect weather for walking the city streets!Let me drop a quick weather joke for you: Why did the meteorologist bring an umbrella to the party? Because he wanted to make it rain... with awesome predictions! Now, let's talk incoming weather systems. We've got a mostly stable pattern for the next few days, but Tuesday might shake things up. There's a 40 percent chance of showers after 2 PM, with temperatures climbing to a toasty 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Later that night, we might see some thunderstorm action between 8 PM and 2 AM.Weather Playbook time! Today, I want to break down what we call a "sea breeze". It's when cooler air from the ocean moves inland, creating a natural air conditioning system. In New York City, our east winds are a perfect example of this meteorological magic.Three-day forecast: Sunday looks mostly sunny with a high near 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Monday brings mostly sunny skies and a high near 71 degrees Fahrenheit. Tuesday introduces those potential afternoon showers.Hey, this forecast was brought to you from the concrete canyons of Manhattan, where the weather is as dynamic as the city itself!Don't forget to subscribe to our podcast for more weather wisdom. Moving into a new apartment is supposed to be an exciting time, but for one person, it became the start of an unnerving nightmare. What began as subtle, unexplained occurrences—an odd cold draft on a warm day, strange noises in the middle of the night—soon escalated into a terrifying presence that seemed intent on taking over not just the apartment but the occupant's mind. As days turn to weeks, dark thoughts start to creep in, thoughts that don't feel like their own. The cold in the apartment isn't just physical; it's emotional. It's psychological. This story chronicles the slow and insidious infiltration of an unseen entity, one that chips away at the mental and emotional state of its target until they're left questioning their sanity. Can an apartment be haunted, or is this a case of an individual's inner demons taking shape? And when the entity begins to manifest in more aggressive ways, can it be stopped before it drives its victim to the edge?

This soundscene was captured two weeks ago from a rackety wooden fence beside a grass meadow. Reeds are growing to right of scene, waving and hushing in strong gusts of spring warm wind. Centre, a view out across the meadow. Left of scene, over a rough track and an overgrown strip of marshy land is the Thames Estuary. Above, from time to time, skylarks. Hidden not too far off in a thicket, a cetti's warbler. Various other birds come by, each a pleasure to hear, with its own unique estuary sound.  It's a scene that feels wide open and exposed. It's lashed by the weather. Strong gusts and breezes, and quick whispering winds. But being the end of May, it's warm. The sun is radiant. Its energy heats the ground, creating deliciously warm sweetly scented banks of moving air. Thermals, that the birds use to rise easily into the sky. The Thames, at this point sprawling wide as a lake, provides navigation not just for ships but for aircraft. Fortunately only a few pass over during the time of our recording. This is what nature along the Thames Estuary, from a rackety fence wobbling in the wind, really sounds like.      * Thanks again to Lento supporter Ian for taking a day to drive us and the Lento box out to the Thames Estuary. Getting to remote locations so we can capture and share the sound-feel of being there is what Lento is all about. And it ought to be quite a straightforward process. Check map for a nice looking location. Travel out to it with recording gear. Set up, press record, wait about for around an hour, then return home, listen to the captured soundscape and publish! The weird thing is despite having recorded at over a hundred different physical locations, we still haven't quite worked out how to persuade birds to sing on cue, wind not to gust out of control, rain to fall just when we want it, and cars planes and people to vacate the area while we are recording...

Finally. An episode that is less than 2 hours long. It helps that this week we're covering Seizures in Barren Praise by grind/crust band Trap Them. The album is only 10 tracks and 25 minutes total. Compared to the last few episodes this one just BREEZES by! It also helps that Seizures in Barren Praise by Trap Them happens to be one of my favorite albums of all time. Illegally downloading this album from some guy's blogspot page when I was 16 started a snowball effect that would alter how I listened to heavy music going forward which made this a bit of a nostalgia trip for me. We also do our best to parse through the loose plot that makes up the concept of not only this album but all of Trap Them's music up to this point. The vinyl I have here I believe is a second pressing, standard weight on ultra clear vinyl. It comes in a nice enough trifold jacket which shows off the album's full artwork done by Converge vocalist Jacob Bannon. The album sounds perfectly fine. Minimal surface noise but if we're being honest, any surface noise would get lost in the chaos of the album anyway. I picked this up a few years ago used from Pharmacy Records in Greenville which is, for my money, the best place in the upstate to find metal/punk/hardcore records. We're lucky enough to have a few decent record stores here in the upstate but if you're into heavy music at all, Pharmacy is the one you wanna go to. In the news corner this week we check in with our old pal Tim Lambesis and see what his old band members are saying about him. Hint: it's not good. We also check in with what's going on with Death Grips and Andy Morin to see what a new band member is saying about him. This barmy afternoon in Holme-Next-The-Sea has gained a stiff undulating wind. It hurries past the sheep in the paddock next to St Mary's church. Whisps through banks of unmown grasses, sifting up their scent. Shakes dry-leaved hedgerows so they sound as summer dry as the baked mud looks by the lane. Yes, today certainly feels like it's the first day of late summer.  Sit then on the bench underneath the fir tree. Rest back from the deep blue sky. Feel the sun's heat radiating off the parapet wall of the church. Hear the changing wind. How it hushes in the fir's needles. Rustles in the broad leaves of the deciduous trees. Rises, then calms. Causes the landscape to shift between near, and far. Surely this is how to best enjoy such a day as this. With sheep, grazing in the field nearby. And wood pigeons, roosting along the church roof and above, in the trees.  Spending time on this bench, taking in the day and the various kinds of warmth that it seems to be made of, might lull you into a daydream, and a thought. How are the animals around considering this first day of late summer? Are they enjoying the scents of the grass too? The hushing of the wind in the fir tree? The yellow orange heat rising from the sun warmed ground? Maybe they too have let go their plans, and are just basking in the sensations of what it is to be conscious of everything that's presently, and pleasantly around. * We made this recording in late July 2024. It was the way the wind sounded in the fir tree that caught our interest. Finding somewhere to locate the Lento box wasn't easy but we eventually managed to find a fence post that let the box capture the fir tree as it is in the wider landscape, beside the church. Sometimes the presence of the church can be felt as it reflects bird calls and other nearby sounds. At around 26 minutes the low rumble of a distant military jet plane can be heard for a short time. This part of England hosts various very active military airbases. We were in fact lucky to capture as long as we did before more and much louder jets flew over, producing intense low frequency rumbling.

Our job is to make Trump fail. That, at least, is the view of the writer Joseph O'Neill, whose essays in the New York Review of Books offer not just a powerful critique of Trump but also of the contemporary Democratic party which he describes as a “cancerous thing”. There's a desperate need, O'Neill believes, for the Democrats to reinvent themselves as an populist alternative to Trumpism. And that means, he says, addressing the problem of angry young men who, he says, have become “cannon fodder” for social media personalities like Joe Rogan. Joseph O'Neill is the author of the novels The Dog, Netherland (which won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and the Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award), The Breezes, and This Is the Life. He has also written a family history, Blood-Dark Track.

The Euros start today and Copa America next week. So expect a slew of garbage about soccer/football as the “beautiful game” or, even more ludicrously, the “people's game”. But as Joseph O'Neill shows in his timely new novel, Godwin, today's trillion dollar football industry is a mirror of our globalized, neo-colonial economy. Think of Godwin as a chirpy Heart of Darkness for our celebrity age of Messi, Ronaldo and Mbappe. And O'Neill, an Turkish-Irish Manchester United fan based in Brooklyn, has the necessary globetrotting credentials to chart the rottenness of our beautiful game. One-nil to neo-liberalism. Own goal. Joseph O'Neill is the author of the novels The Dog, Netherland (which won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and the Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award), The Breezes, and This Is the Life.
