Summary: Grab a bowl of brains and hunker down for a perfect theme for spooky season - the Undead! Today Holly and Devin sink their teeth into these legendary creatures; deceased but actually alive, depicted as everything from vampires, zombies, mummies and skeletons. Whether you vibe with Brendan Frasier in the iconic 1999 film or are a huge fan of The Walking Dead, these beings have captured our imaginations for centuries for a great reason. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (3:37): Holly discussed Dread Nation by Justina Ireland, an alternate history novel where the Civil War ended not because of political agreements or military victories, but because the dead begin to rise on the battlefield at Gettysburg, forcing both Union and Confederate forces to confront a new, common enemy: the undead. We follow Jane McKeene as she is trained in the art of combat against the undead (called Shamblers) at Miss Preston's School of Combat for Negro Girls in Baltimore. Jane becomes increasingly disillusioned with the system and matters escalate when she and her friend are sent to Summerland, a western settlement that harbors dark secrets. Holly's key takeaways were: Ireland was inspired to write this book after reading “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”; it is unlikely that women who didn't even dress themselves would be zombie fighting machines, and would likely have relied on their ladies' maids instead. Ireland uses this speculative angle to shed light on the very real history of the United States and the implications of racism both then and now. The Shamblers are pretty classic zombies: slow-moving, rotting, and relentless in their pursuit of human flesh. They can turn others into shamblers through bites, similar to traditional zombie lore and hoards of shamblers roam the countryside. Jame is resilient, a master at surviving and must navigate the tricky path of how much one has to compromise their morals in order to survive; she is faced with illusions of safety and the crumbling facade of corruption while holding onto friendships and the trust she shares with her schoolmates. The Heart (15:55): Devin discussed Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match by Sally Thorne, a reimagining of the Mary Shelley classic that follows Victor's younger sister who has been unlucky in love. A great scientific mind but known as being a bit odd, she's run out of suitors but strikes upon a solution as she assists her brother with his groundbreaking reanimation experiments; she'll make her own! A lucky (and gorgeous) corpse lands on her lab table and soon, Will is (re)born. But will the spark of life lead to a spark of love? Devin's key takeaways were: This novel was such a fun re-imagining of the Frankenstein story. It keeps all the same creepiness and gothic energy without the moral quandary of hating your creation and instead falling in love with it. Will is a dashing, galant, and not-too-wonky reanimated corpse that any reader will root for. Angelika as a protagonist is the twist this story needed; Thorne explores the power and powerlessness of women in this era, especially within the scientific community through Angelika and the scrapes her crew gets into. Whenever you're reanimating a dead body, you have to wonder if our lives are controlled by fate or by our own choices - is everything a coincidence or is it all meant to be? Throne uses a familiar tale to explore the implications of choice for characters and when love truly does conquer all, including death. Hot On the Shelf (29:28): Holly: Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune Devin: Hot Hex Boyfriend by Carly Bloom What's Making Our Hearts Race (33:10): Holly: The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives on Hulu Devin: English Teacher on FX/Hulu Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

On this month's episode of Future Tense Fiction, host Maddie Stone talks to Justina Ireland about her short story “Collateral Damage.” The story follows a group of soldiers deployed alongside TED, the Army's first self-aware combat drone. TED is relentlessly efficient, quickly outpacing its human counterparts—and leaving them worried for their jobs. But when a wrong call from the clunky robot puts soldiers' lives at risk, they realize just how hard it is to program for battlefield experience. After the story, Ireland shares how her own time in the military shapes her writing, and why tech dreamed up in D.C. rarely reflects the needs of soldiers on the ground. Andi and Lise really enjoyed this movie starring Michelle Yeoh that explores various themes around the idea of connection and finding meaning in our lives against the backdrop of the multiverse, absurdist comedy, action adventure, and moments of poignancy. Here, Yeoh plays Evelyn Wang, who lives above the laundromat she and her husband own. They're being audited by the IRS; her husband is trying to serve her with divorce papers but she doesn't realize it because so much is going on; her father is living with them and she doesn't have great history with him; and she's practically estranged from her daughter. And then suddenly, she's brought into the multiverse as the one person who might be able to save it from a potential threat. So many layers! This is one they'll be thinking about for a while. A few minor spoilers, but they don't detract from the impact of this movie. Movie Trailer HERE LA Times article with the movie writers (mild spoilers) Rent it on Amazon Prime. Shout-outs: Lise is jazzed about Adrian Tschaikovsky's Final Architects sci fi series. She read the first book, Shards of Earth, and the world-building is amazing. She ran right out and bought the second because she had to know what happened next. Andi is reading the second in the Dread Nation series by Justina Ireland, Deathless Divide. Alt-history zombies. What's not to love? She also started watching the TV adaptation of the comics Paper Girls on Amazon Prime and is really enjoying it. Tense and creepy!
Welcome to episode #28.So, one of the things I always try to make clear on the podcast and my platforms, in general, is that while I love books, I love writing, I love the written word in general, I don't read as much as I used to. It's not necessarily something I'm either proud or ashamed of -- it's just a fact of my current life. I love to read, but because I read for work, sometimes I just don't have it in me to read for pleasure. That being said, when I do read for pleasure that are certain aspects I love to see in books.-Links: https://WrittenInMelanin.com/linksPurchase We Are the Origin: https://payhip.com/b/osSWmSupport Chelsea and the podcast: https://Patreon.com/CMLockhartCheck out the Melanin Library: https://MelaninLibrary.comMusic by Akia DaGreat-Books mentioned1. This week definitely feels like we're living in one of the apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic books we shared in this episode. This is Liz's last episode with us before she goes on her temporary leave. Books mentioned in this episode: Severance by Ling Ma, Familiar Things by Hwang Sok-yong, Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson, Into the Forest by Jean Hegland, and Dread Nation by Justina Ireland. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/keepitfictional/message
Dread Nation by Justina IrelandThe war sort of came to an end, when both the Confederates and the Union decided it was more important to fight the UNdead (or shamblers they are popularly called) than each other. Of course, the country is still in a state of chaos and disorder, which means it is just right for new groups of politicians to rise. No longer are the Democrats or Republicans in power, but rather the Survivalists and the Egalitarians. All this seems to be too lofty for Jane – she just wants to get back to her home, Rose Hill, where her mother and all her Aunties live. But Jane, along with all the other able bodied young Negros, have been sent to combat schools. It is believed that by training young black children in the art of fighting the shamblers, the whites will then be protected.Recommended for 8th grade and up.
Librarian Sarah Bowman joins Jeff and Rodi to talk about the delicate art of recommending books. We got a NYT Bestseller in the house! On this episode we're joined by the immensely talented Justina Ireland (Dread Nation, Lando's Luck) to discuss the 1987 Civil War Epic, Glory. So first off, Jupiter Sharts? Really? Also, we break down the story behind "The Tear", give props to the bevy of Black acting talent, question if Shaw was any good at war, and get into the true history of the 54th regiment. And if that wasn't enough, we introduce maybe our greatest drop yet. You can find Justina's books wherever books are sold! This week we look at Justina Ireland's book, Dread Nation, a historical zombie thriller that takes place in an alternative universe in which the Civil War ended when the dead at Gettysburg began to rise up and consume soldiers from both armies. We discuss unreliable narrators, breathing in corsets and Brie has complicated feelings. "... the dead will take everything you love. You have to end them before they can end you." In this episode of Fictional Hangover, Amanda and Claire talk about shamblers, shambling, and being shambled in their discussion of Dread Nation by Justina Ireland, featuring music by Lyss Emerson.
Justina Ireland's book DREAD NATION has been called “Gone With the Wind with Zombies,” a description that we think does Ireland's work a great disservice. It is a book about zombies, but it is so much more than that. We thought we'd let Justina Ireland herself describe the book and its sequel, Deathless Divide. The following quote is the author describing her inspiration, found in an interview that can be found online at Blackgirlnerds.com. Ireland says: “The original idea for Dread Nation and Deathless Divide came about in response to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I was reading that book and thinking: How could women who didn't even dress themselves suddenly become zombie fighting machines? If anything, I thought, they would've had ladies' maids to do the zombie-killing for them. And as I considered what that would look like in the United States, the first draft of Dread Nation was born. It featured Negro girls who went to special combat schools to better themselves, similar to the Indian boarding schools of the late nineteenth century. Soon, I had a book about zombies and pretty girls fighting the dead in fancy dresses with lovely blades. Cute boys showed up to complicate things and voila! It seemed like a great young adult novel. One part intrigue, one part survival, a dash of romance, shake until blended and serve chilled.” Recommend in this episode: Grady Hendrix's The Final Girl Support Group, Timothy Zahn's original Star Wars Thrawn series (early 90s) Heir to the Empire and Dark Force Rising, and Netflix's Sweet Tooth Next Episode: "Especially Heinous" by Carmen Maria Machado Please rate and review us, or better yet, tell a friend. Tananarive Due's novella “Ghost Summer” takes place in the fictional town of Gracetown, Florida. Gracetown is the kind of small town where everyone knows everyone because the families go back to the town's founding. But Gracetown is different in one significant way: ghosts come out on hot summer nights. And those ghosts can only be seen by children. Now, most young boys and girls would run away from a town full of ghosts, but narrator Davie is not most kids. He's a budding ghost hunter, who can't wait for his summer among the spirits. Ophelia Harrison used to live in a small house in the Georgia countryside until one night in November 1922, when a cruel act took her home and her father -- the same night Ophie learned she can see ghosts. Now Ophie and her mother live in Pittsburgh with relatives they barely know. In the hopes of earning enough money to get their own place, Mama has gotten Ophie a job as a maid in the same old manor house where she works. Daffodil Manor is haunted by memories and prejudices of the past—and, as Ophie discovers, ghosts as well. Ghosts who have their own loves and hatreds and desires, ghosts who have wronged others and ghosts who have themselves been wronged. And as Ophie forms a friendship with one spirit whose life ended suddenly and unjustly, she wonders if she might be able to help—even as she comes to realize that Daffodil Manor may hold more secrets than she bargained for. Ophie's Ghosts is a wonderous mix of adventure, history, social justice, family story, and coming-of-age tale of a young girl learning responsibility as she figures out where she belongs. Justina Ireland is the New York Times bestselling author of the YA novels Dread Nation and its sequel Deathless Divide, as well as Vengeance Bound and Promise of Shadows. She is also one of the authors spearheading the next generation of Star Wars novels entitled The High Republic, and is the author of the middle grade Star Wars adventures Lando's Luck and Spark the Resistance, and the upcoming A Test of Courage.

Librarian Natalie McCall chats with Justina Ireland, author of fantasy novels for young adults including the New York Times bestseller, Dread Nation (a genre-bending historical novel featuring finishing school zombie slayers). Justina also writes for the Star Wars franchise, including the books Lando’s Luck, Spark of the Resistance, and A Test of Courage. Her middle grade novel Ophie’s Ghosts comes out in May. Natalie and Justina talked about whether The Great Gatsby is actually any good or if readers have been brainwashed into thinking it’s a classic, the behind the scenes working of the hype machine in YA publishing, and the portrayal of “Black pain” in literature. Justina also gives hope to aspiring writers when she describes selling her most successful book to a publisher when it seemed like her career was over. Justina’s Eight

To get even more YA news and recommendations, sign up for our What’s Up in YA newsletter! SHOW NOTES Short story collection. Preferably fiction and/or fun/uplifting Meet Cute: Some People Are Destined to Meet; Tales from the Inner City by Shaun Tan; Take the Mic edited by Bethany C. Morrow; Snow in Love; Hope Nation edited by Rose Brock; The Radical Element edited by Jessica Spotswood. A gift for my brother who isn’t a big reader. He’s in college, loves soccer and video games, and hasn’t enjoyed a book since reading Holes in middle school. Don’t Read the Comments by Eric Smith; Slay by Brittany Morris; The Pros of Cons by Alison Cherry; Booked by Kwame Alexander; Furia by Yamile Saied Mendez; Warcross by Marie Lu; Feed by MT Anderson. New, contemporary, socially conscious, diverse. Yes No Maybe So by Aisha Saeed and Becky Albertalli; The Voting Booth by Brandy Colbert; Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusuf Salaam; Running by Natalia Sylvester; We Didn’t Ask For This by Adi Alsaid; Dear Justyce by Nic Stone. Diverse body positive books. What I Like About Me by Jenna Guillaume; Melt My Heart by Bethany Rutter; My Eyes Are Up Here by Laura Zimmermann; Gabi, a Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero; If It Makes You Happy by Claire Kann; Body Talk: 37 Voices Explore Our Radical Anatomy edited by Kelly Jensen. YA dealing with survivors of sexual abuse/pedophilia/other childhood trauma: some of my favorites that I’ve read are Sadie, Girl in Pieces, Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls, Perks of Being a Wallflower and Speak. Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson; Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough; The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith; Charm & Strange by Stephanie Kuehn; How Dare the Sun Rise by Sandra Uwiringyimana; Wrecked by Maria Padian; Infandous by Elana K. Arnold; In The Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. A YA book to get my friend who doesn’t really read….p.s. she really likes Disney. Disney’s Twisted Tales; Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige; Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo; Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee. One of my high school students likes mysteries and fantasy novels, but doesn’t like any “kissing” (i.e. lots of romance or a focus on a relationship). What suggestions could I give her? Goldie Vance: The Hotel Whodunit by Lilliam Rivera; Endangered by Lamar Giles; Jennifer Lynn Barnes; Karen M. McManus; Complicit by Stephanie Kuehn. A book for my 16 year old nephew who is a very particular reader. Used to love Rick Riordan but has moved on. Beyond Riordan, the only books I’ve sent him that he has actually called begging for the sequels is Scythe. He likes Agatha Christie “because it makes him think” (to figure out what is going on). I’ve tried AS King and Going Bovine, but have not gotten a reaction and all the fantasy tried and trues. Would love an idea from you! Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore; The Future will be BS-free by Will McIntosh; The Lines We Cross by Randa Abdel-Fattah; Warcross and Legend by Marie Lu. A contemporary with some magic and some romance, but the story does not center grief. Now and When by Sara Bennett Wealer; Displacement by Kiku Hughes; Lobizona by Romina Garber. I am looking for a fantasy novel with romance that ideally is part of an almost finished or finished series. I have already read many of the popular ones, so I guess I am looking for those that were a bit more under the radar. I have read/started the Folk of the Air Series, A Court of Thorns and Roses Series, Red Queen Series, all of Cassandra Clare, etc. and loved them all! Looking for something in that realm. Blythewood by Carol Goodman; Lost Voices by Sarah Porter; The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd; Brooklyn Brujas by Zoraida Cordova. Warm fuzzy story about family (chosen, biological, adopted, whatever) with winter holiday(s) (not necessarily Christmas, but Christmas ok) as a backdrop and a happy ending. Something wintery and hopeful. (At least something that leaves the reader with some hope.) I like a variety of things. Some writers whose work I’ve enjoyed: Katie Henry, Karen McManus, Tomi Adeyemi, Jenny Han, Nina LaCour, and too many names to list. A few books I’ve read and enjoyed because of this podcast: Agnes at the End of the World, We Are the Perfect Girl, and Orpheus Girl. 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston; The Kid Table by Andrea Seigel; The Chaos of Standing Still by Jessica Brody. A feminist book like Rules for Being a Girl. Girls Like Us by Randi Pink; The Degenerates by J. Albert Mann; Burn Baby Burn by Meg Medina; Watch Us Rise by Renee Watson and Ellen Hagan. Books for a 13 year-old. She loves the Shadowhunter Chronicles by Cassandra Clare and anything written by Rick Riordan. Recently, I loaned her my copy of With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo (one of my favorite YA authors ever) and she loved it. I’d really like to give her books in a genre she loves and one that will expand her reading material. Finding Yvonne by Brandy Colbert; New Kid/Class Act by Jerry Craft; Inventing Victoria by Tonya Bolden; Akata Witch/Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor. Something that will make me laugh, but also teach me something. The Go-Between by Veronica Chambers; Cherry by Lindsey Rosin; Unpregnant by Jenni Hendriks and Ted Caplan; We Are The Perfect Girl by Ariel Kaplan. I’m looking for at book for my niece (18 years old). She is not an avid reader out side required reading in school. She’s not that into fantasy and Sci fi, she likes contemporary fiction better. She might like a short story collection because 40 pages is not as daunting as 350 pages (or more if it’s a series) for a story. Books she had liked recently: They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera and Broken Things by Lauren Oliver. Try Margarita Engle, Nikki Grimes, Stephanie Hemphill, Kwame Alexander as an alternative to short stories but still with a lot of white space, as it may be less intimidating; Toil and Trouble edited by Jessica Spotswood and Tess Sharpe; Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. I’m interested in spooky tales, thrillers, science fiction, and non-WWII fiction. No dystopias or urban fantasy, please! The most important thing to me as an aromantic asexual person is that’s there’s no significant romantic element. I don’t want the main character to have any romantic partners or to spend several pages daydreaming about their crush(es). Thanks! Pan’s Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro and Cornelia Funke; Dread Nation by Justina Ireland; Dreamland Burning by Jennifer Latham; The Blood Confession by Alisa M. Libby; The Girl From The Well by Rin Chupecho; Jackaby by William Ritter; Watch Over Me by Nina LaCour. A book for my 19 year old sister who loves Wilder Girls and The Poet X. She is a fan of feminism, horror, and queerness in books. The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters; Mary’s Monster by Lita Judge; The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis; Furia by Yamile Saied Mendez; We Are The Wildcats by Siobhan Vivian; The Stars and the Blackness Between Them by Junauda Petrus. A book for my daughter. She recently told me that she is gay. I want to show her how much I love her and accept her. She loves graphic novels and has read many of the most popular ones featuring same sex relationships. Everything Noelle Stevenson! Lumberjanes, Nimona, The Fire Never Goes Out; Queer: A Graphic History by Meg John Barker and Julia Scheele; Skim by Mariko Tamaki; Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu; Kiss Number 8 by Colleen AF Venable and Ellen T. Crenshaw; Moonstruck by Grace Ellis and Shae Bragl. Something heavily folklore-based (Maggie Stiefvater or higher level of “heavily”) and LGBTQ+ please? European and Asian folklore are my favorite but I’ll be happy to dive into any other as well. Anna-Marie McLemore; A Thousand Beginnings and Endings edited by Elsie Chapman and Ellen Oh; Wicked As You Wish by Rin Chupeco; A Curse of Roses by Diana Pinguicha; Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao; Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardost. A fantasy or science fiction novel, preferably action-packed. Etiquette and Espionage by Gail Carriger; The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline; Cut Off by Adrianne Finley; Orleans by Sherri L. Smith. An awesome ghost story. The Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco; Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn; Horrid by Katrina Leno; The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring; Watch Over Me by Nina LaCour; Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All by Laura Ruby; Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. School for Good & Evil read-alikes for 14-year-old reluctant reader. Thanks! Carry On by Rainbow Rowell; The Irregular at Magic High School manga series by Tsutomu Sato; The Black Mage by Daniel Howard Barnes; Supermutant Magic Academy by Jillian Tamaki; A Blade so Black by LL McKinney; Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim; Liz Braswell’s Twisted Fairy Tales series; Melissa Albert’s The Hazel Wood.
