Back together again! Cameron was in Baltimore for the week, so this episode was actually done in person, which was much needed because we had a lot to say on this one.  1970's The Landlord might sound good on paper (Hal Ashby, Bill Gunn, Louis Gossett Jr., Beau Bridges) but it plays out like some of the worst mishmash of hippie dreams and racial politics. A nepo baby buys a building in Harlem and...well... We discuss all the ways this went wrong as well upholding the sanctity of the third level of caucacity.  Youtube is being awful, but we're still trying to upload our live show so hopefully that will be everywhere soon! We also have some fun episodes and guests coming up in the next few weeks, starting with our next episode which covers 4 time Olympic gold medalist Kevin Durant's only foray into acting, Thunderstruck!

This week, Dave and Bryan celebrate Black History Month with a look at Bill Gunn's delirious 1973 vampire movie, Ganja & Hess, which stars Gunn, Marlene Clark, and Duane Jones from Night of the Living Dead. It's a sleepy, dreamy art film about black identity, gender, class, and the loneliness of a man without ancestry as damaged people deal with themes of blackness in America through the gauzy lens of a vampire movie. Often lumped in with blaxploitation movies like Blacula and Shaft, it is anything but. In a series we are calling Criminally Forgotten, we pluck out discarded, overlooked or misunderstood gems from the past.  In this episode, we unearth a relic from the archives, Bill Gunn's 1973 art/horror/vampire movie Ganja & Hess . Gunn, a literate, smart, cultured person who came from the Theatre and the literary arts was tasked with replicating the immense success of the iconic African-American vampire film, Blacula (1972).  What he produced instead was a complete departure from the tropes of the vampire genre, creating a meditative, artistic, dream like movie that utilizes what some critics have called, "Haptic visualization".  The writer Donato Totaro describes Haptic cinema as; "... unlike Western ocularcentrism, which values sight as the greatest epistemological sense, intercultural cinema embraces the proximal senses (smell, taste, touch) as a means for embodying knowledge and cultivating memory” (Donato Totaro, Canadian Journal of Film Studies) Ganja & Hess has been cited as an important film in the African-American canon, as it dispels stereotypes of Blaxploitation and African-American culture promoting an art house, experimental style more notable in Foreign cinema at the time.  Join Azed and Tom as they discuss this unique horror film...just in time for Halloween!! "If Shaft is Barry White and Melvin Van Peebles's Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song is the Sex Pistols, then Ganja & Hess is John Cage". Jaime N. Christley, Slant Magazine

With an award-winning filmography that includes the epochal Civil Rights series Eyes on the Prize, 2020's MLK/FBI, and 2021's Citizen Ashe, among many others, documentarian Sam Pollard has changed the way we read history. Pollard is also an editor and producer, working with filmmakers like Spike Lee and Bill Gunn. Simply put, the guy is a legend. Which brings us to his latest film, the new two-part documentary Bill Russell: Legend, which digs deep into the life and career of one of the greatest basketball players of all time. The winner of a record 11 championships with the Boston Celtics from 1956 to 1969, including two as a player coach, Bill Russell broke many boundaries, both on the court and off. Pollard's film is a remarkably nuanced portrait of a complex figure who, as a record-breaking athlete and active participant in the Civil Rights movement, stood at the intersections of sports, celebrity, and race in America. FC co-deputy editor Clinton Krute invited Pollard on the podcast to discuss his new film with scholar Samantha N. Sheppard, whose 2020 book Sporting Blackness: Race, Embodiment, and Critical Muscle Memory on Screen is an expansive analysis of sports documentaries and representations of Blackness on screen. We discussed the intensive research process behind the film, how the genre of the sports documentary can be used to rewrite history, and the legacy and life of Russell, who passed away in July 2022.

Even though he was Bill Gunn-ed in the end, there is still a lot to look at in Mimic. We discuss classicism, access, and how we determine value in this week's crit. In 1973, filmmaker Bill Gunn's vampire/addiction movie Ganja & Hess was a sensation at the Cannes Film Festival. Starring Duane Jones, Marlene Clark, musician Sam Waymon, and Gunn himself, this mysterious, fascinating film should have been an arthouse sensation in the States. Instead it played a single New York theater for two weeks, before it was pulled and eventually re-edited in a more conventional manner for the exploitation market. I talked with Christopher Sieving, author of Pleading the Blood: Bill Gunn's Ganja & Hess, about the film, Gunn's greatest works, and the career that this remarkable director, writer, and actor should have had. More information about Pleading the Blood: Bill Gunn's Ganja & Hess. The soundtrack for Ganja & Hess has been released by Howling Wolf Records.  On this episode we look at a genre and a sub-genre within that - Blaxploitation horror films! Blaxploitation was a genre that existed for only a short time in the 70s, but had a major impact. Together with our guest, Lord Blood-Rah, we'll discuss the origins of the genre and then take a look at several horror films that spun out of it.Blacula (1972) is probably the best-known of these films, and it's a well-done vampire story. William Marshall plays Prince Mamuwalde, who is turned into a vampire by Dracula himself. He awakens in modern day (1970s) Los Angeles and discovers what he believes to be his reincarnated wife. Of course, carnage ensues! It's a terrific, even scary film and you should see it if you haven't.It was followed up the next year by Scream Blacula Scream, which saw Blacula brought back to unlife by means of voodoo. Blacula once again stalks LA, but he tires of being a vampire and seeks a cure via voodoo priestess Pam Grier. Definitely the most unusual of the films we cover is Ganja and Hess (1973), which has been described as an experimental horror film or an art film. Whatever you want to call it, it is in a category all its own. The creation of writer/director Bill Gunn (who also acts in it), it tells the story of Dr. Hess Green, who is an expert on the ancient Myrthian people of Africa, who drank blood. He gets a new assistant who is completely insane and attacks him with a Myrthian artifact, which turns Hess into a vampire himself. Eventually Hess begins a relationship with Ganja, the wife of his former assistant, and she too becomes a vampire. The film is extremely moody and stark. Duane Jones, best known for his role as Ben in Night of the Living Dead, plays Hess.We follow these up by looking at Abby (1974), a take on The Exorcist, Sugar Hill (1974), a zombie revenge flick, and last but certainly not least, Rudy Ray Moore's Petey Wheatstraw, The Devil's Son-in-Law (1977), where the Dolemite actor takes on Satan himself. Certainly a variety of films to choose from! For our Sensor Sweep, Commander Larry shares a very appropriate book: Horror Noire: Blacks in American Horror Films from the 1890s to present by Robin R. Means-Coleman. This tome takes a deep look at the history of African Americans in horror films, and how their roles changed over time. There's also a documentary of the same name. Check it out!Don't forget, you can catch Lord Blood-Rah on LordBloodRah.com. There you can find links to his long-running series, Lord Blood-Rah's Nerve Wrackin' Theater, as well as his podcast, his Patreon series, and more. Apologies for the less-than-stellar sound quality folks, we had a couple of last-minute snafus (which ought to be expected when one has put off uploading any new episodes for a yea), and we've got a slight delay in editing and polishing episode 1 of season 4.    Since I promised that the season would start today, the Ides of March (honestly, what was I thinking?), here's a rundown of what the season is going to look like.   In a lot of ways I'm starting from scratch here after a tumultuous year. We all know 2020 wasn't kind. In a few more hours, my episode on Salem's Lot will be up, but while you wait (patiently, I hope), here's a teaser.   Hello Friends. This is not the podcast you were looking for.   Due to an unfortunate series of last-minute snafus, the first episode of this season, Salem’s Lot, has been delayed by about 12 hours or so- not long, I promise! But I didn’t want to not release anything on the day I promised to, so I thought I’d use this opportunity to give you a rundown on what vampire stories you can expect me to cover for the next several months.   First up, very shortly I’ll be dropping an in-depth analysis of the 1075 Stephen King Novel, Salem’s Lot. I won’t be going into the 1979 TV miniseries so much, but maybe, if I get enough requests, I can do a small supplemental episode about the significance of the ways the TV adaptation diverges from the novel, and what those changes mean to any critical analysis of the story. I’ve had an idea for a while to release small episodes in between the big drops, so if that’s something you’d personally like to see, do reach out on social media and let me know.    Next, we’re going to be moving to a Friday release schedule beginning March 26th with the release of my deep dive of the indie vampire graphic novel, “Life Sucks.” I’ve been working on this one for almost a year, actually. If you like the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show, you might find the graphic novel worth hunting down and reading. I quite enjoyed it.   On April 9th I’ll be talking about Martin, George Romero’s take on the vampire genre. His take is deeply rooted in folklore in a way that few other modern vampire films have been, and I’m excited to tackle it. If you’re interested in a supplemental episode discussing various forms of undead creatures in mythologthy that have made their way into pop culture, from zombies to vampires to dragur, again, let me know. I think that might be fun but I’ll only add supplemental episodes if I get enough feedback   April 23rd’s episode will be all about Christoper Moore’s 1995 novel, Bloodsucking Fiends. It’s shocking to me to contend with the fact that this quirky gem of a vampire romantic comedy has had its 25th anniversary come and go already- it was definitely a book that was highly influential on me as a babybat vampire fan and scholar, and I hope all of you enjoy a bit of 90’s nostalgia alongside me.   Moving into May, I’m going to be doing a two-parter of sorts, with an episode concerning  Bill Gunn’s 1973 underrated black vampire classic romance, “Ganja and Hess” dropping on May 7th, which will be followed up with an episode about Spike Lee’s 2015 remake, “Da Sweet Blood of Jesus” on May 21st. There’s a lot to be said about the pointed symbolism both filmmakers use in their own versions of the same story. I know you won’t be disappointed to learn more about that.   June 4th I’ll be revisiting an episode I covered all the way back in my podcast’s first season in 2018: a much more nuanced and in-depth analysis of the 1987 classic vampire film, “Near Dark.” So many of you have asked me for more information on that movie, and I am more than happy to oblige.   Another vampire story I’ve been asked to cover time and again is Gerorge R R Martin’s “vampire on the Mississippi” steamboat horror novel, “Fever Dream.” We all know that Martin can write tension, tragedy, and and heartbreak into the most fantastical stories, and Fevre Dream is no exception. If you liked well, the first few seasons of Game of Thrones anyway, I think you’ll really enjoy submerging yourself into the world building of Fevre Dream, as well. That episode drops June 18th.   Finally, on July 2nd and 17th, I’ll be releasing a much-anticipated 2-part deep dive into the world of Vampire: the Masquerade. There’s honestly just so much to say about this enormously popular RPG that I know I won’t be able to cover everything in 2 episodes, but I’ll be interviewing individuals with insight into the game over the years as part of my research process, and my Patreon supporters will get access to as many of those interviews as I am given permission to share. Definitely let me know if you have any specific questions you want answered in those episodes, because while a lot of the work is already done, I’ll do my best to accommodate any burning questions you might have.   After that, I’ll be taking the months of August and September off. That’s the height  hurricane season here on the Gulf of Mexico, so I’ll be taking a bit of downtime and working on the second have of 2021’s episodes of Rose Sinister: Vampires, returning in October, 2021.   And that’s it! Again, you only have to wait a little bit longer for my episode on Salem’s Lot. Until then, I hope you enjoy this sneak peek into upcoming episodes. If you’d like to avoid spoilers, please remember that none of my podcast episodes are spoiler-free, so be sure to get a head start on the stories before I cover them.   You can keep in touch with me online at Rose Sinister.com. I’m on instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and now- TikTok! I’ve also been planning a foray into Twitch for the longest time now- I’ve already reserved the Username Rose sinister which i use for all social media accounts, and you can expect some announcements about the Twitch channel in the next few months.    Remember, vampires may or may not have reflections, but their stories do. Their stories, of course, are reflections of us.    It’s good to be back.   Rose   www.rosesinister.com

Experimental Black horror film GANJA & HESS is tough to pin down, despite a simple synopsis (doctor cursed to crave blood shares his curse with another before succumbing to it himself). It packages much of its text inside a fractured storytelling framework, which seems to have dominated its critical appraisal in the decades since its release. In this episode, we wrangle with that discourse and try to read what director/actor Bill Gunn might’ve been trying to say with the overall piece, from an examination of the myriad identities that take shape in Black America to its focus on the intersection of faith, sexuality, and self-loathing. There’s hardly any film genre more intrinsically allegorical than horror. If social borders, both conscious and unconscious, along acceptance and exclusion, empathy and revulsion, good and evil, are dictated by the mass projection of society’s fears onto whomever threatens its norms, then horror is the exaggerated projection of its basest, most grotesque imaginations around those boundaries onto the silver screen. While the human rights analogy of the Living Dead series and the Cold War nihilism of Texas Chainsaw Massacre prodded at social themes from the perspective of the cultural mainstream looking outward at the groups it excluded, there’s a rarer vein of the genre written from the purview of those on the outside looking in. Week 8 of Black Is Not a Genre is another doubleheader featuring films from two definitive eras of Black American cinema. Written and directed by leading light of the ‘70s ‘rebellion’ era, Bill Gunn, Ganja and Hess uses vampire mythology to paint hauntingly abstract metaphors for Black assimilation, loss of identity (the real life simile for which is the irony that the film was thought to be lost forever at the time of Gunn’s death), and the social psychology of white religious imperialism. Director Ernest Dickerson’s 1990 film Def By Temptation laid the tracks for a brief but prolific burst of Black-centric horror films in the ‘90s, but the scrappy indie film is overshadowed more Hollywood fare like Vampire In Brooklyn. Lead actor and screenwriter James Bond III’s script reimagines the darker tones of the schlock aesthetic, a trademark of its distributor Troma Entertainment. Enhanced with savvy practical effects and Dickerson’s impossibly lush cinematography, the film uses a classic succubus tale to explore urban-vs-rural social dynamics of northern Black migration and moral/cultural identity crises within the Black faith tradition. These unheralded gems represent a major void in horror that underscores the genre’s social significance. If horror is film’s window into society’s subconscious, its narration of who is worthy of fear and death and who is worthy of life and salvation, then the lack of films from America’s socially and racially ostracized has a host of real-life implications. Ganja and Hess is available to stream on Kanopy and both films are available on @shudder and Amazon Prime. About the guests: Jazz and Kat are hosts of the horror & sci-fi podcast, Girl, That's Scary! Raiders of the Podcast

Joined by intrepid guest Lucas, the crew takes a the sights of a 1970s art film and a South Korean-Japanese co-production that totally overlooks the countries complicated and brutal history with each other.     The only Bill Gunn film to get any kind of release before being quickly pulled and butchered by opportunistic distributors who had zero concept of the beauty they held. When an ancient dagger gives Dr Hess Greene a bad case of blood addiction, he takes pretty well to his new life until the estranged wife of a former associate enters his life. A brilliant meditation on cultural imperialism, African American assimilation, addiction, social structures, and more than a passing eye at organized religion... it's not a surprise that it didn't take off even at the height of New Hollywood. Bill Gunn lays so much of his soul bear through Ganja & Hess.     Seventeen years ago two children saw their friend run over by a car speeding around a blind turn. Today one of them is killing people in an effort to resurrect their dead friend on the orders of an unknown god. Deciding an article written by his fellow witness is the sign he has been waiting for, he lures her and a cameraman to an abandoned apartment building to witness his last two murders and an act of true love.  J-horror vet Kōji Shiraishi, better known for more fantastical monstrous women, delivers something far more grounded and brutal with A Sweet Record of Murder.     All that and Lucas thinks six moves ahead, Tyler stumbles into a trap fully unaware, Dave doesn't get it, and Kevin sees his tentacled Elder God master in the gaps between time and space.
