“Carpentry was the name of the game. And that's what I wanted to do. So that's what I did. I took it full time and and it's been a blast ever since.” -Kyle Hammill Welcome to a brand-new episode of the Woodpreneur Podcast. Today, your host Steve Larosiliere is joined by Kyle Hammill from Trails End Custom Construction. Kyle's story is a testament to the power of hard work, creativity, and a willingness to seize opportunities. His early years were spent on farms, gaining practical skills and learning to navigate challenges. While in college and working in a bar kitchen, Kyle realized that his knack for handywork could be more lucrative than his current job. This realization led him down a path of various odd jobs, from painting doors to fixing railings, ultimately steering him toward carpentry - a field he deeply enjoyed. The turning point came with the decision to form an LLC with his brother. What started as a part-time endeavor soon became a full-time commitment after college. Unlike many of his peers, Kyle stepped into the real world not in search of a job, but as the owner of a burgeoning company. Listen now and get the whole story! “ The biggest thing is, you know, our CNC machine being able to get out of cut cabinets with computers and not not backbreaking.” -Kyle Hammill Growth, Challenges, and Evolution Fast forward to five and a half years later, Kyle's business has grown significantly. Initially a trim carpenter, he worked on numerous homes, learning the importance of efficiency and quality. However, dissatisfaction with the standard of materials led Kyle to innovate. He began focusing on custom cabinetry, which now forms half of his business, while his brother manages the new home construction side. Their journey wasn't without challenges. The team soon realized the importance of outsourcing to manage workload efficiently. This strategy allowed them to focus on unique, high-quality projects while maintaining control over the design and installation. The Importance of Process and Teamwork One of the key factors in Kyle's success has been his emphasis on process and teamwork. Every project follows a meticulously planned sequence of steps, ensuring efficiency and quality. This approach has not only streamlined operations but has also helped manage the growth sustainably. The team at Trails In Custom Construction operates on an idea meritocracy, where everyone's input is valued and considered. Regular meetings and feedback sessions help refine processes and ensure that everyone feels heard and valued. Reflections on Leadership and Business Philosophy Kyle attributes much of his business acumen to his upbringing and the influence of his family. His father, a physician with a knack for leadership, instilled in him the importance of making everyone feel included and necessary. This lesson has translated into his business, where he emphasizes the importance of having the right people in the right roles and focusing on product, process, and people. The Future of Trails In Custom Construction As the business continues to grow, Kyle remains focused on finding ways to reach his ideal clients, those involved in high-end residential projects. He understands that this requires a mix of strong relationships, effective marketing strategies, and a presence in the right circles. Conclusion: A Story of Grit and Innovation Kyle Hamill's journey from a college student doing odd jobs to the owner of a thriving custom construction business is a powerful story of grit, innovation, and unwavering commitment to quality and process. His approach to business, emphasizing teamwork, process management, and continuous learning, serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners alike. EPISODE 167 DETAILS We are constantly working to highlight unique and innovative programs that bring you the very best genetics within their prospective breeds.  Today, we introduce you to Clear Springs Cattle Company and the philosophy behind the Bred For Balance Sale featuring quality Simmental and SimAngus Genetics.   Many parts of the country are being hit by winter weather conditions.  But that has not slowed down the feeder cattle market!  Is there no limit to where these feeder cattle prices can go?  Be bring you a market report from Faith Livestock Auction in Faith, South Dakota; Torrington Livestock in Torrington, Wyoming; and the Joplin Regional Stockyards in Joplin, Missouri.   CLEAR SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY & THE BRED FOR BALANCE SALE The Wulf Family In 1949, Leonard Wulf moved to Minnesota when he married the love of his life, Vi. There they raised their family and lots of sheep and cattle. Jim was one of 11 children and learned to love cattle from his Dad, which he passed down to his sons. In 2011, Jim, Twyla, Travis and Brady moved south of Starbuck to start their ranch, Clear Springs Cattle Company. This is when the family transitioned from Limousin to Simmental. They then teamed up with Hook Farms to start marketing genetics under the Bred For Balance brand. The Ranch Located on the Glacial Ridge, surrounded by rolling prairie and oak savannas, Clear Springs has a unique landscape for Minnesota. The namesake is the many natural springs they have captured to water the cattle, providing them with some of the cleanest water in the world. Every acre is managed with soil health in mind, from intensive rotation on the pastureland to no till and cover crops practiced on the farmland. The vacation rental house on the ranch allows us to share our beautiful views and rural lifestyle with others. The Herd Grown mainly from the Hook Farms herd, the current CLRS cowherd is "bred for balance". Balance between genotype and physical traits, balance throughout their EPD profiles, and balance within the offering having both maternal and terminal oriented bulls. The latest tools and technology are used to further advance the genetics of the herd as well as good ol' cowboy logic. They strive to graze as long as possible each year and develop seedstock with longevity in mind. The Wulf family, along with their affiliates Highland Acres, Anderson Cattle and Trails End market yearling bulls and select females through the Bred for Balance sale held each February.   BEEF ANTITRUST LITIGATION GETS MORE ENTRIES According to Meating Place, The Big Four beef packing companies face yet another four lawsuits accusing them of conspiring to “fix, raise, stabilize and/or maintain the price of beef” sold to retailers since 2015, according to the documents in filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York last week. The New York cases mirror allegations leveled in lawsuits filed over the last few months in North Carolina and Illinois, and a case filed in 2022 by several quick-service restaurant chains. The Illinois case and those that were filed earlier have been transferred to the Minnesota District Court to be consolidated with other, similar antitrust cases in Multidistrict Litigation. All of those lawsuits resemble previous litigation against beef packers that garnered settlements in the tens of millions of dollars, at the same time that the Department of Justice and Congress scrutinized their practices.  In the most recent New York-based cases, BJ's Wholesale Club Inc., Gordon Food Service Inc. and Glazer Foods Co.,  Quality Supply Chain Co-Op Inc. (QSCC) and Target Corp., all accused Cargill Inc., JBS S.A., National Beef Packing Co. and Tyson Foods Inc. of coordinating or manipulating beef prices to levels they would not have reached without the alleged actions, according to court documents. The separate filings also accuse several operating affiliates of the four processors of participating in the alleged violations of the Sherman Act through “anticompetitive means” concerning the price of boxed and case-ready meat. The four defendants sold approximately 80% of the more than 25 million pounds of fresh and frozen beef sold in the U.S. market in 2018 alone, each of the similar suits claim. The latest lawsuits also all cite efforts by the U.S. Department of Justice and USDA in 2020 to investigate allegations of beef pricing practices among the current defendants going back to at least the beginning of 2015. Subscribe and listen to this episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, GooglePlay, or iHeartRadio! Today, we are discussing your listener questions all about Walt Disney World! What are not-to-be-missed adult experiences at Walt Disney World? I discussed with Lou Mongello on WDW Radio Episode #557 the top 10 overlooked experiences for adults, inside and outside of Walt Disney World. Definitely check that out for great suggestions for adult experiences.   One of my absolute favorite adult experiences at Walt Disney World is the Wanyama Safari. This wonderful experience at Animal Kingdom Lodge includes an intimate tour of the savannas and a delicious Jiko dinner. I wrote a detailed review of the Wanyama Safari here.    Special dining is another great adult experience. I discuss dinner at EPCOT’s Takumi-Tei and Le Cellier.   Backstage tours are a fun adult experience. There are many to choose from around all the Walt Disney World parks, each offering a different topic and view of behind-the-scenes activities.  You can read about all the tour offerings here.  What free activities can I do solo at Walt Disney World? Outside of the parks, there are several fun activities that I think are enjoyable to do solo. Animal Kingdom Lodge offers a culinary tour of the two Jambo House restaurants, Jiko and Boma. You can go to Disney Springs to take in the entertainment, do some window shopping, and enjoy some free samples. Take a boat ride from Disney Springs to resorts, or enjoy boat rides in other areas of Walt Disney World. Or go high on the Skyliner between EPCOT and Disney Hollywood Studios, and stop at a resort to explore.  Inside the parks, enjoy the PlayDisney app for games and special effects throughout the parks. Play the interactive game, Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. Enjoy free entertainment in all the parks. At EPCOT, enjoy free performances at the amphitheater outside the American Adventure pavilion.  What Walt Disney World restaurants are good for large groups? I highly recommend making advanced dining reservations for large groups whenever possible. Some of my favorite restaurants for large groups include Trails End at Wilderness Lodge, Boma at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, Biergarten in EPCOT’s Germany pavilion, Ale & Compass at the Yacht Club, Boatwright’s Dining Hall at Port Orleans Riverside, ‘Ohana at the Polynesian Village Resort, The Boathouse at Disney Springs, Jaleo at Disney Springs, Il Mulino at Walt Disney World Swan Hotel, and Todd English’s bluezoo at Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel.  What quick service restaurants do you suggest? Dawn had a couple of questions about quick service restaurants, when she visits the parks in late August 2020. Her first question was which restaurant to go to near Spaceship Earth for a quick grab and go, before she and her family leave EPCOT and head to the Magic Kingdom. I recommended Sunshine Seasons in The Land pavilion, or to take the monorail to a resort before going to the Magic Kingdom.  Dawn’s second question was about recommendations for the best quick service restaurants to use quick service dining plan credits. Recommendations included: Magic Kingdom: Be Our Guest or Columbia Harbour House. EPCOT: Sunshine Seasons, Pizza al Taglio (Italy), and Regal Eagle Smokehouse (American Adventure). Disney Hollywood Studios: ABC Commissary in hot weather, or Woody’s Lunch Box in cooler weather. Animal Kingdom: Flame Tree BBQ, Harambe Market, and Satu’li Canteen. Resorts: Contempo Cafe at the Contemporary Resort, Landscape of Flavors at Art of Animation Resort, The Mara at Animal Kingdom Lodge, Pepper Market at Coronado Springs, and Geyser Point at Wilderness Lodge. Disney Springs: D-Luxe Burger, Daily Poutine. Thank you for listening! Bearded irises (Iris germanica) are some of Clara's favorite blooms.  But are they really a decent cut flower? According to Dole et. al. 2017 , likely not for large scale production, but for the smaller grower looking for some blooms that add total WOW factor in the early summer, especially for weddings, these do belong in your perennial collection.  The new varieties with lots of branching and many "sockets" provide a good week's worth of flowering in a vase, and they are hardy up here on the northern prairies to boot!   This week we had the great pleasure to have an in depth chat with Bob and Ann of Trails End Iris Gardens in Ontario, about the in's and out's of the beautiful bearded iris.  We talk about types, the long season of bloom possible if you mix and match types, how to grow them successfully, as well as some of their recommendations for cuts.  Bob and Ann's passion for, and knowledge of, these amazing flowers is evident and will no doubt have you out looking for a few (or many) new bearded irises for your garden.  Our theme music was composed and performed by Heather's son Callum and audio editing was completed by the uber talented Laura Eccleston.

This week, on the American Passenger Rail Heritage Foundation's "The Let's Talk Trains Show," Kansas City Nathan travels two-hours east to the Missouri State Fairgrounds, in Sedalia, Missouri, for the Trails End event (www.thetrailsend.org). The event celebrates the men who drove cattle from Texas to the closest railhead towards Chicago. The fairgrounds are built right along the former M-K-T route, which is now the KATY Trail State Park. One of the major events going on at the fairgrounds is the Trails End Model Train Show & Collectible Show, which is being ran by members of the APRHF.  Be sure to join us!
