Scott Reed is a knife maker from Oklahoma who makes the "Cowboy Switchblade." I found him through a friend that told me about his knives and I'm so glad I did. Scott is a very interesting guy to visit with and I truly enjoyed interviewing him for this episode. Along with his knife work, Scott also makes his own sheaths for all his knives and as a leatherworker myself I appreciate that. Be sure to check him out on Facebook and Instagram and see some of the unique knives that he makes for working cowboys and knife collectors. If you are interested in visiting with him about a knife, reach out to him and he can fix you up.

One organizer that has been used often to add clarity to priorities is the Eisenhower matrix. You can find a link in the show notes to get a free version of this and use it if you wish.I think the advantage of the Eisenhower matrix is that you are able to see organize material in a visible way that allows for quick processing. I generally keep mine visible in a monitor so that when I have completed a task, it is visible and allows me to see what is next. This is the "sticking to it" part of today's quote. Organizers become not only a planning tool, but a reference tool to avoid distractions or forgetting things. How do you go about planing and implementation of your ideas? Truck show platform personalities come and go, but Hope Zvara's mission to improve truckers' quality of life with a program that leans on small, incremental changes in their daily routines continues to gain traction. Founder and CEO of Mother Trucker Yoga, Zvara's the author of "Trucking Yoga: Simple Fitness for fhe Long Haul," a book in which Zvara gives us an unvarnished account of how her own struggles with addiction and depression drove a personal need to get healthy. "I've struggled with depression and anxiety on catastrophic levels," she said. "Yoga, and movement, saved my life." Included in the book, too, is a regimen of down to earth, practical yoga exercises adapted to the ergonomics of a semi-tractor. At the Mid-America Trucking Show, as you can see in the thumbnail image for today's edition of Overdrive Radio above, she led our own Long Haul Paul through a few of them. And in Paul and Zvara's talk here, she offers answers to these questions relative to notions of a mental-health crisis all around the nation. "What if it's not a mental health crisis?" she said." What if it's a movement crisis?" Find more about Zvara's tools for OTR drivers via her website: https://www.mothertruckeryoga.com/ Also in the podcast: An audio diary from owner-operator Mike "Mustang" Crawford, who poses his own answers to what was a pressing question no doubt for some during this week of the CVSA's annual Roadcheck inspection event: Is it possible to get through the entire blitz week without passing an open scale? After Overdrive editor Todd Dills talked to the longtime flatbedder last week, his plans to spend much of the May 16-18 event at home in Long Lane, Missouri, changed. He finished what he needed to do at home early and the freight called him out. After he passed two closed scales early Tuesday, the first day of the blitz, on his way toward Chicago from the Springfield, Missouri, area, he started calling in with reports from the road. Three days later in Florida, then .... And: On the diet side of the health/quality-of-life equation, at MATS the CDL Drivers Unlimited group hosted family-practice physician Ken Berry, who spoke to principles of what he sees as the PHD, or “Proper Human Diet,” akin in some ways to a Keto high-fat, very-low-carb diet. Trucker and CDLDU founding driver council member Scott Reed introduced Berry at MATS with some detail of his own experience with the diet. Reed's dropped well more than 100 pounds over the course of a year into it. The death of Bob Dole this week at the age of 98 has reminded the country just how much Washington and the Republican Party has changed since the days he ruled the roost as Senate Majority Leader. Although a stalwart partisan who was once known as Richard Nixon's "hatchet man," Dole also believed firmly that politics and government had a purpose - to get things done, to pass legislation that actually made a difference in voters. Even if it meant reaching out to the other side, listening and respecting what they had to say and forging compromises. An approach that seems almost entirely foreign in politics these days. On this episode of Packed With Pearson, Host Tyler Kern talked with Scott Reed, Vice President of Sales for Syntakt Packaging Integrations, and Michael Senske, President of R.A., Pearson Holding Company. They dug into the big news of the formal separation of Pearson's System Solutions Group from Pearson Packaging Group. The packaging side of the business is now Syntakt Packaging Integrations. “Historically, Pearson Packaging Systems has been a company that's focused on producing individual discrete machine centers, packaging machinery, and small cells,” Senske explained. “Several years ago, we started offering complete end-of-line solutions.” With these new solutions, the Pearson System Solutions Group emerged to create fully integrated solutions. But, for various reasons, there's been confusion about who does what, so they decided to launch a separate organization that isn't machine-oriented. “What we really wanted to do is kind of launch a separate organization that really is not machine-specific,” Senske said. “Its role isn't to design and manufacture packaging machinery. It is really to provide engineering services, project management services, integration services, and provide customers with complete end-of-line solutions.” The overall end result is a business that is a separate entity with a separate core competency, with a separate group of employees. This new entity is Syntakt Packaging Integrations. “We're really focused on the end-of-line … full turn-key systems on the end of the line,” Reed said. “Case erect, case pack, case seal, palletize, and many of the technologies that are intermingled in that.”

Scott Reed and a friend trekked more than five miles into the mountains west of Denver to attempt a long, moderate ice climb during the short days of late December. At an elevation around 12,000 feet, they climbed several pitches and then, in high wind, decided to bail back down the route. Toward the bottom, Scott, age 23 at the time, pondered whether or not to rappel from just one small piece of protection and save a little money. As it turned out, his decision would be much more costly than he imagined. In Episode 56 of the Sharp End, Scott speaks with Ashley about his long fall, the incredible self-rescue back to their car, and the lessons he learned (including the value of satellite communication devices on remote climbs). The Sharp End is presented by Mammut, with additional support from Desert Mountain Medicine, Suunto, and Minus33. This podcast is produced by the American Alpine Club.

We had a wonderful time with our guest Scott Reed out on the tower at Camp Mondamin on Lake Summit. Scott, Gary, and Mark all met in the early 70s at the camp. It was only appropriate that the first face-to-face recording of the podcast in months happened within view of Rabbit Island resort. We did follow reasonable guidelines for keeping ourselves a safe distance apart. Scott, from Tupelo, MS (the birthplace of Elvis) is quite an accomplished musician. And a highlight of this episode is the musical portion. Scott is a part (a BIG part) of the band, Two Drink Minimum . Scott and Gary teamed up for several selections. Gary is an accomplished harmonica virtuoso. Mark stayed appropriately in the background during this portion. Scott is a man of many talents. He's a top-rated and much sought-after financial advisor with the firm, HardyReed. (www.hardyreed.com). And in fact, he's the author of a best-selling book, Top 40 Rules of Investing. And Scott shares some of his knowledge with us in the first portion of this episode. At the end of the show, you'll hear how you can win a free copy of Scott's book. For the rest of you, you can find his book on Amazon. We are firm believers that all Small Businesses should create a private “board of advisors” to help you build a more robust system for achieving success. One of the most important people on that board is your attorney. Today we are excited to be joined by Scott Reib, an attorney with over 20-years of experience. Scott is going to share with us ways to “shatterproof” your business and discuss why having an ongoing relationship with your attorney is so important. Dave Hamilton 0:00 We all know that we need an attorney. None of us want to pay an attorney. None of us are happy when we have to pick up the phone and call our attorney because we know it's going to cost us usually, you know, in the the one sixth of an hour, right? 10 minute increments, right. And, Shannon, today we have a guest that has sort of broken that mold in his legal practice. Yeah, yeah, really unique way to bring legal services to small business owners that I think is really valuable. And I think for all of you is PDF pen and PDF pen pro version 12 of these great utilities are out now. And they are our sponsor for this episode. pdf pen is the ultimate tool for editing PDFs on the Mac. And they've added some great features in PDF pen and PDF pen pro 12 that are out now. They've now got stationery built in with like new paper colors along with line and grid options. For custom page designs. They've got a magnifier window that allows you to zoom in on wherever your mouse pointer is in a document and even move between other open documents without any mouse clicks. So you can just you know you're looking at those like big things like contracts or, you know, orders or whatever and you just need to move around. The magnifier goes with you, which is very cool. PDFs, we're all dealing with them these days. The size of them can get pretty big but sometimes you You want you know your images to look good. In fact, you always want your images to look good. And sometimes you've got big images in your PDF. Well now, PDF pen and PDF pen pro have customizable compression settings so that you can really pick how small you want things in relation to how you want your PDFs to look when other people are taking a look. And we all know that we're using things to sign documents remotely DocuSign is a big big one that people are using and PDF pen pro 12 users get built in DocuSign support for digitally signing PDFs. So you've got to go check this out PDF pen for Mac supports Mac OS Catalina and then PDF pen for iPad and iPhone supports iOS 13 and even the Apple Pencil check it all out at smile software.com slash podcast. Yes, it's a generic thing. They will ask you where you heard about it and you know the answer so go check it out smile software.com slash podcast or thanks to smile Scott Reib 4:18 Sure, yeah, the concept of shatterproof it kind of comes from the glass that's, you know, all around us. Every time you get in your car, you're surrounded by the shatterproof glass. And the idea is that when a rock hits it, and as we're going down the highway, the glass isn't going to shatter and come through and cut you. Right It marks the glass or it made the whole thing may crack up, but it doesn't come through and hurt you. And so we want the windshields of our business to be like that shatterproof glass. And so as you're going down the road of business, in your business vehicle, when things happen that you didn't want to happen, I mean things happen in life and in business. In the market market. We see it and then we can deal with it in a proactive way. If we set Shannon Jean 5:32 So everybody that listens to this show knows that Dave and I are firm believers that you should create a private board of advisors for your business to help you build a better system. To achieve success. One of the most important people on the board is your attorney. Today we're excited to be joined by Scott Reed, an attorney with over 20 years of experience Scott is going to sha...

Six months from Election Day, President Donald Trump's prospects for winning a second term have been jolted by a historic pandemic and a cratering economy, rattling some of his Republican allies and upending the playbook his campaign had hoped to be using by now against Democrat Joe Biden.Trump's standing has slumped as the nation's focus on him has intensified during the coronavirus outbreak, revealing an erratic and often self-absorbed approach to the crisis. The result: He's losing ground in some battleground states with key constituencies, including senior citizens and college-educated men — all without his Democratic challenger having devoted much energy or money to denting the president."It's Donald J. Trump versus the coronavirus and the recovery," said Scott Reed, the senior political strategist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "Biden is a sideshow."For some Republicans, the prospect of an election that is almost wholly a referendum on Trump is unnerving. Though the president's base remains loyal, a significant portion of GOP voters view him skeptically on a range of personal qualities. He pulled many of those voters to his side in the 2016 election by drawing an aggressive contrast with Democrat Hillary Clinton. He planned to do the same in 2020 with Biden, with the added tailwind of a surging American economy. Now, that economy is crumbling around Trump. A staggering 30 million Americans have lost their jobs in the past six weeks as businesses have shuttered due to stay-at-home restrictions aimed at containing the pandemic. One of the president's own economic advisers predicted nationwide unemployment could reach 20% by June. When his back is against the wall, Trump often responds by lashing out at a political opponent, hoping to expose flaws that detract from his own. But with Americans consumed by the pandemic and economic uncertainty, Republicans close to the president and his campaign say Trump's team will struggle to break through with any attacks on Biden for some time. Instead, the public's focus remains squarely on Trump and his handling of the health and economic crises."Trump is completely dominating the public's attention, and it's not helping him," said Alex Conant, a Republican strategist who advised Sen. Marco Rubio's 2016 presidential campaign. In public polling, the president's approval rating hasn't dropped significantly since the fast-moving virus swept through parts of the U.S. According to a poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research conducted in late April, 42% of Americans approved of Trump's job performance. That's about where it's been for the past few months. But both Democratic and Republican pollsters and strategists say they are seeing signs of weakness in critical states and demographic groups. Those findings are confirmed by some of the Trump campaign's own data. When briefed on campaign polling in recent days, Trump erupted in anger, according to several people with knowledge of the conversation.Private polling shows Trump in a weaker position in several pivotal states, including Michigan, Florida and Wisconsin. He's also sagging with senior citizens and college-educated men, according to GOP operatives who have viewed recent polling. Some pollsters said they've seen signs that lower-educated women are also drifting away from the president.Independents are largely irrelevant, the operatives said, but only because they had already abandoned the president before the pandemic. A half-dozen operatives and pollsters spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss private data.Trump's campaign argues the dynamic will reset after the president and his team can unleash a full array of attacks on Biden, who became the presumptive Democratic nominee just as the pandemic began bearing down on the United States. On this week’s program: The gang is back from the illustrious Las Vegas Open! We all had a blast. And to thank you we’ve got our event review PLUS a bonus episode hosted by John as he personally interviews some of the VIP of LVO. LVO 2020 is officially in the books and boy was it great! Scott Reed and his crew of judges made sure everything went smoothly not with judging but also facilitating scoring rounds in the midst of any technical difficulties. We review the Champions event though the eyes of John, Jeremy, and Alex; John (The Professional) Feuerhelm graced the Frontline Gaming twitch channel with his soothing voice as he shout cast on both the AoS champs and doubles events. John hard at work while Jeremy and William duke it out in the final round! Jeremy (Le Boogieman) Veysseire fought hard with his Fureslayers in each and every one of his games and in the final round he was defeated by William Frederick’s Hedonites in round 9. He got 2nd place in the LVO champs but won it all by getting best Fyreslayers, GA: Order, best team (Left Coast Corsairs), 3rd hobby track, and #1 in the ITC for the 2019 season! Mr #1 ITC Himself! Alex (Bonedaddy) Gonzalez got real spooky with his Bonereapers. He fought on into the top 8 but was bested by the talented Anthony Lawrence and his DoK. He did walk away with 3rd renaissance person in the Champs event but won best Nighthaunt, Bonereapers, GA: Death, best team (Left Coast Corsairs), 2nd hobby track, and #2 in the ITC for the 2019 season, he had trouble carrying everything home. Alex needed a third arm to help with awards photos Thank you all for a fantastic LVO! To thank you we want to share a bonus episode hosted solely by John in conversation with some Great players and the people who make this entire event happen! Check out the show notes and time stamps here.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is a new entry into VW's line-up. And you can refer to it as a midsize or a full-size. But either way, I refer to it as great overall value and a big win for VW's newest edition to its lineup. We picked up a loaded version from our friends at Ontario Volkswagen for a test drive and were seriously impressed. The mid-sized SUV is extremely versatile and packed with technology. Get all the details in this iDriveSoCal Podcast. ***Transcript Notes*** Recorded May 17, 2018, in Los Angeles, CA 2018 Volkswagen Atlas Review Welcome to iDriveSoCal, the podcast all about mobility from the automotive capital of the United States – Southern California! Tom Smith here and today we're reviewing the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas from our friends in the Los Angeles suburb of Ontario, California – Ontario Volkswagen. 2018 Volkswagen Atlas driver profile 2018 is the first year for the Atlas and VW definitely did this mid-sized SUV right! I recently took one for a half-day test drive and was seriously impressed by many aspects of the vehicle. Trim Configurations & Pricing When it comes to trim levels the Volkswagen Atlas really offers something for everyone with many different options. But the main trim levels include the S, Launch Edition, SE and the SEL. Plus on most trims, you have the option to include Volkswagen's all-wheel-drive 4MOTION and it's well-rounded Technology package. And manufacturers suggested retail pricing is going to begin around $30,000 and go up to roughly $46,000 fully loaded. As always, the prices we quote are just estimates. You need to select the Atlas that's equipped to your liking and your price will reflect that. But you definitely want to go Ontario Volkswagen to do so. Ask for our friends Randy Halcomb or Scott Reed and they'll hook you up. The 2018 VW Atlas I Reviewed Lucky for me, I got to drive the top of the line Atlas. The V6 SEL Premium with 4-Motion. Now there's one option that my test-driver didn't have and that's the R-Line Appearance Package. The Atlas is a great looking SUV as is. But if you're looking for something just a little sportier – or bolder – looking the R-Line dances it up nicely. The R-Line gives you 20-inch alloy rims, a grill that's a bit bolder looking and some nice accents on both the interior and exterior. Not a big price increase but like I said – definitely dances up the appearance nicely. 2018 Volkswagen Atlas cockpit The first time I spotted the Atlas on the road was somewhere on La Cienega near Culver City. I remember the situation vividly because at first glance I swore I was looking at an Audi. I also recall the situation vividly because we had just started the iDriveSoCal Podcast and I immediately called Professor Quan to tell him about my first road-sighting of the new VW offering. Of course, Professor excitedly rattled off all kinds of stats about the vehicle right off the top of his head. Including: The 5-star Safety Rating from the National Highway Transportation Safety Board. And the industry-leading 6-year 72-thousand-mile bumper to bumper warranty. What Does the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas Look Like? Anyway, at first sight I thought the Atlas looked fantastic. Bold and rugged yet classy and refined with great, clean lines. The Atlas I drove looked even better – as again, I drove the top of the line. Now it's technically a mid-size SUV but as we've discussed in many podcasts – everything is getting bigger lately. And the Atlas follows suit. From the outside it looks a bit bigger than a mid-sized SUV. And inside it's huge – which is awesome and we'll get into that in just a second. But what I loved about the Atlas is that while it looked and felt bigger it definitely drove like a mid-size SUV. It was highly maneuverable. I swung by the Bass Pro Shop during my test drive and navigating the parking lot was not only a breeze...

Volkswagen Innovation Volkswagen is delivering innovation in many ways that you need to factor into your next car-buying equation. From new technology and designs to new vehicles and (an industry-leading) new warranty – the carmaker is definitely on the move. We sat down with Scott Reed from Ontario Volkswagen, in Ontario, California, to talk VW innovation. ⇒SoCal's VW HQ = Ontario Volkswagen Hear the impressive details about what's available right now and what's being rolled out very soon. And learn about an exclusive (and free!) ride and drive event you can attend. VW Factory is bringing out brand new vehicles you won't be able to buy – but you will have the opportunity to drive them on April 24th! All that and more in this iDriveSoCal Podcast. ***Transcript*** Recorded March 29, 2018 Volkswagen Technology & Innovation Scott: What makes most of this stuff so easy for a new owner of a Volkswagen to be immediately comfortable in the new car that they just purchased is the fact that they already know how their phone operates. They know how to pull the navigation up on their telephone. And now that can so seamlessly be transferred up to the display on the vehicle. I think the bigger story with a lot of our cars is the design, the design itself, not necessarily technology. You're getting a lot of bang for your buck with Volkswagen these days and especially now with the 6-year, 72,000 mile you know People's First warranty. That's industry-leading. Tom: Welcome to iDriveSoCal, the podcast all about mobility from the automotive capital of the United States--Southern California. I'm Tom Smith and today I'm out at Ontario Volkswagen in the Los Angeles suburb of Ontario, California. Ontario Volkswagen is just off the 15. And joining me is the sales manager of Ontario Volkswagen, Mr. Scott Reed. Thank you so much for joining us and thank you for being our newest automotive retail partner. Scott: Not a problem. I thank you guys for being here. We're excited. Southern California Volkswagen History Tom: We're excited to start bringing the news of Volkswagen to drivers throughout Southern California. So I always like to start off with everyone's path to the automotive business is different. How did you get into the business yourself? Scott: For me, it's a family affair. I was born and raised in the car business for the most part. My dad goes way back in the Southern California automotive retail side of things. So I kind of grew up in showrooms and sales managers' offices and things like that. And then shortly after high school, I decided I wanted to start selling cars. So dove into it. Dad wouldn't give me a job working for him because I didn't know how to sell cars. So I went over to a Ford dealership close to my home and showed up as a 19-year-old kid and said, "I'd like to learn how to sell cars." They gave me a job and I learned the ropes. Did that for about a year and came back to Dad.. Tom: And growing up, was there ever a time that you were like, "Maybe I want to be a doctor. Maybe I want to be a lawyer," or anything but? Were you always like,"Dad does this. I love that. I want to do it too."? Scott: Yeah, not particularly, no. I liked to play baseball as a kid. You know when you grow up and realize that you're probably not going to be a professional baseball player. For me, luckily, it was earlier than most kids. I realized that at about 13 or 14. So I kind of gave that up and played water polo and swam all through high school and my first year in college. Tom: Nice. Family --> Cars Scott: But yeah, I realized very shortly I was ready to get to work and start making some money for myself. So I went to community college and as soon as I started selling cars, I really enjoyed it, enjoyed the people that I worked with, enjoy speaking with people and customers on a daily basis. And I was kind of just...it felt like a natural progression to me. And still,
Among perhaps the biggest ripple effects from the ELD mandate protests could be, some truckers believe, a new appreciation for the cultural diversity within the owner-operator community. That's something that both Scott Reed, part organizer among the different groups that came together in D.C., and owner-operator Mike Landis, who participated, certainly agree on. In this Overdrive Radio podcast, you'll hear Reed's reflection on outcomes and next steps, and Landis offers his narration of what it was like to have been a part of.

Open Forum- Vote NO! FAA Anti-Trucker bill and ELDs!! Saturday 6PM ET Call in 347-826-9170 Two major trucker issues right now affecting Trucker wages are: 1) the last minute FAA reauthorization amendments that the ATA has "urged" Lawmakers to slip in an aviation bill this week. The amendments are the Fisher Amendment and the Denham Amendment. The ATA vowed last year that this was their MAIN priority. The reason? To keep drivers wages low. If the amendments are allowed in the FAA bill, it will ensure that drivers will only be paid piece work wages and nothing more. All detention time, waiting, paperwork, etc... will be expected to be done for free. Read more Anti-Trucker wage language in 2 bills to ensure cheap labor and high profits TO CALL NOW. WE ONLY HAVE A FEW DAYS TO STOP THIS!! 202-224-3121 Tell your Reps to SAY NO to FAA reauthorization bill’s Anti Trucker wage amendments Fisher Amendment in the Senate bill and Denham Amendment in the House bill (State preemption, meal & rest break Amendment) 2) ELD's--- The mandate for ELD's is Dec of this year, however the majority of truckers are against them. Tony Justice and Scott Reed plan to call in and discuss their scheduled protest to Washington October 3-7. Read more about this and more in their group ELD or ME.

It's an increasingly common scenario: identity theft, which can be a huge negative to your credit rating. It happened to owner-operator Scott Reed a few years back. His identity was stolen by a still-undetermined individual far west of his Ohio home, and after being surprisingly denied on a simple credit application, he was pulled over in the normal run of trucking and notified that there were several warrants out for his arrest. That's when the reality of just what had happened to his credit truly sank in. Along the way, he had to let go of a prized power unit, claw his way back into profitability after a health issue, and more. He tells the rest of the story in this podcast.
In this Overdrive Radio podcast what you'll hear is part of Overdrive Senior Editor Todd Dills' many conversations with Buckland, Ohio-based owner-operator Scott Reed over two days on the road in mid-April 2017. It tells the story of what Reed sees as a certainly less-than-ideal hours rule when it comes to his operation. He's leased to Ohio Transport out of Middletown, Ohio, and works with agent Greg Simpson to stick within about a 200-mile radius of his home.
Stories have power. No matter what you think about Jesus, no one can deny that he was a master storyteller. Jesus’ stories or parables were used to invite listeners to imagine a world saturated in Kingdom living. These stories inspire, disrupt, and sometimes even trick us into understanding the truth. In this episode Scot and Chaz have a conversation with Scott Reed about the Parable of the Barren Fig Tree. This parable shocks the listener into hearing some important truths when it comes to God’s judgment and justice. Suggested Resource: Stories with Intent by Klyne R. In our second annual Classical Classroom Summer Music Festival Series, we hit the (sound)waves at the Music Academy of the West in sunny Santa Barbara, California! All good things must come to an end, and...here we are. The final installment of our summer music mini-series features New York Philharmonic concertmaster (who used to be Houston Symphony concertmaster), Frank Huang. He talks about the job of a concertmaster, and about his own story of a life in two cities with two orchestras. Frank also discusses first being a student and then being a teacher and visiting artist at the Music Academy of the West, and he talks about what he's been doing at the MAW festival this summer. At the end of the interview, we kidnap him and bring him back to Houston. It's an action-packed thrill-ride! JK. There's no kidnapping. That's illegal! But we think you'll enjoy the conversation anyway. Music in this episode: - "We're Going to Be Friends," by the White Stripes. From White Blood Cells. - String Sextet in D minor "Souvenir de Florence", Op. 70 by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Audio production by Todd "Triple Double" Hulslander with editing by Mark DiClaudio and three-wheel motion by Dacia Clay. Copious thanks to the Music Academy of the West for all of their help with this mini-series and for letting us crash their summer music festival, with special thanks to Kate Oberjat (oh-bur-yacht) who has not missed a spot and who’s done an awful lot, and to Emma Levine, Barbara Hirsch and Anthony Paggett. Thanks to Scott Reed, Richie Hawley, Matthew Sinno, Jeremy Denk, Bill Williams, Matthew Aucoin, Cynthia Phelps, Thomas Hampson, and Frank Huang without whom these interviews would have been monologues. Thanks to KCRW in Santa Barbara and to engineer Kathryn Barnes. May the Force be with you on your way back to school!
It’s time for the second annual Classical Classroom Summer Music Festival Series! This year, we hit the (sound)waves at the Music Academy of the West in sunny Santa Barbara, California. In the first installment of our MAW series, pianist Jeremy Denk talks about teaching the enormousness of Beethoven to young artists, ragging classical music, whether or not classical music today exists outside the bounds of style, and about what makes the Music Academy of the West unique to him. Throughout the MAW Summer Series, we’ll also hear from the Academy’s president and CEO Scott Reed, faculty clarinet Richie Hawley, and viola fellow Matthew Sinno about the festival experience from their perspectives. It’s going to be rad. Check out this slideshow of the ridiculously gorgeous campus upon which the Music Academy of the West lives. Music in this episode: “Pipeline” as recorded by the Ventures “Pilgrims Chorus,” Tannhäuser, Wagner. (from Youtube) From Jeremy Denk’s recital: Stravinsky, Piano-Rag-Music Byrd, The Passinge Mesures: the Nynthe Pavian From My Ladye Nevells Booke of Virginal Music Lambert, “Pilgrim’s Chorus” from Tannhäuser (after Wagner) Bach, English Suite No. 3 in G Minor, BWV 808, Gigue Mozart Gigue In G Major, K 574 Tea For Two by Art Tatum Audio production by Todd “Two-Shirts” Hulslander with overlording by Dacia Clay. Thanks to the Music Academy of the West for their help with this series, especially to Kate Oberjat, the coolest coordinator in the West, for her assistance with basically everything.
