Holodeck adventures In this episode of the Make It So podcast, hosts Geoff Owen and Baz Greenland, joined by guest Craig McKenzie from the We Are Starfleet podcast, explore the captivating world of holodecks in Star Trek. They start with a look at 'The Big Goodbye' from TNG, recognising its quirks as an early holodeck episode. The discussion then shifts to DS9's 'Our Man Bashir' and the James Bond-like escapades of Dr. Bashir and Garak. The episode concludes with a detailed analysis of Voyager's 'Bride of Chaotica!' and its nostalgic tribute to 1930s sci-fi, especially the Flash Gordon era, focusing on the scenic homage, character dynamics, and Kate Mulgrew's performance as Arachnia. The hosts compare the holodeck's utilisation across series and reflect on how these episodes influence the Star Trek legacy. Connecticut Garden Journal: For delicious Asian eggplants this summer, start your seeds now

It's hard to think about mid summer vegetables when it's still cold and brown outside, but if you want to try some unusual eggplant varieties in your garden this year, now is the time to start seeds indoors. While eggplants are considered a quintessential Italian dish in many homes (my mom used to make a mean eggplant parm), it actually hales from India and China. In that part of the world, Asian eggplants are not just dark purple, but white, green and even orange skinned. These Asian eggplants tend to have more tender skin and sweeter flavor than the European, large teardrop types. I like 'Asian Delight' and 'Ping Tung Long' for their long, narrow, light purple colored fruits. 'Bride' has a similar shape with white skin and purple streaks. For Thai cooking, try the green skinned, golf ball shaped 'Kermit' which is great in soups or 'Korean Red' with its orange colored skin. Some hybrids, such as 'Fairy Tale', are short and narrow fitting perfectly on a grilling skewer. Start your eggplant seeds now under lights. I plant two seeds per 2-inch pot filled with moistened germinating mix soil. I also use a heating pad under the pots to hasten germination. Once the eggplants have true leaves remove the weaker seedling from the pot. Transplant the remaining plant once the height of the seedling is 3 times the diameter of the pot or about 6 inches tall. Keep the seedlings well watered and fertilized. Transplant seedlings once the soil is warm, about a week or so after planting tomatoes. Protect young plants from cold snaps with a floating row cover.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After seven years, 1998's Bride of Chucky revived the Child's Play franchise in a most surprising way. But is the movie the series' apex or a weird step in the wrong direction. In any case, director Ronny Yu's film notably unites Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif) with his blushing bride, Tiffany Valentine (Jennifer Tilly). In the fourth episode of our Child's Play/Chucky mega-series, Pablo Saldana helps us discuss why Bride of Chucky is such a pivotal turning point for the series. We'll discuss the movie's introduction of Tiffany, how it anoints Chucky as a top-tier horror villain, and how series writer Don Mancini takes creative control of Chucky's cinematic shenanigans. Listen in as we enter the "Chucky and Tiffany" section of the Child's Play franchise. And prepare to meet Chucky's seed with Mancini's directorial debut in our next episode. SYNOPSIS Killer doll Chucky (Brad Dourif) is resurrected by ex-girlfriend Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly). But following an argument, Chucky kills Tiffany and transfers her soul into a bride doll. The pair of murderous playthings embark on a quest to return to human form. And Chucky and Tiffany turn to Jesse (Nick Stabile) and Jade (Katherine Heigl), who are unaware that their cargo is alive. Ulrike Freitag's A History of Jeddah: The Gate to Mecca in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries (Cambridge University Press), offers a rich urban and biographical history of Jeddah. Known as the 'Gate to Mecca' or 'Bride of the Red Sea', Jeddah has been a gateway for pilgrims travelling to Mecca and Medina and a station for international trade routes between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean for centuries. Seen from the perspective of its diverse population, this first biography of Jeddah traces the city's urban history and cosmopolitanism from the late Ottoman period to its present-day claim to multiculturalism, within the conservative environment of the Arabian Peninsula. Contextualising Jeddah with developments in the wider Muslim world, Ulrike Freitag investigates how different groups of migrants interacted in a changing urban space and how their economic activities influenced the political framework of the city. Richly illustrated, this study reveals how the transformation of Jeddah's urban space, population and politics has been indicative of changes in the wider Arab and Red Sea region, re-evaluating its place in the Middle East at a time when both its cosmopolitan practices and old city are changing dramatically against a backdrop of modernisation and Saudi nation-building. Ulrike Freitag is a historian of the Modern Middle East with a special interest in urban history and the Arabian Peninsula in its global context. It's week four of our 5 week series on random Star Trek rewatches, and we're up to Colin's least favourite show of the bunch, Star Trek Voyager. Luckily this week we have a semi fun episode drawn in the mostly black and white 1930s throwback 'Bride of Chaotica'. What were the real life reasons why this episode was limited to old sets? How much promise did this show once have, and why did it not live up to it? Why are the toilets not working on the ship? Does Jamie still think of Janeway as the old lady Captain? How is pregnancy causing Colin to be frozen out during the recording of this episode? If the pheromones drew you to this recap, then download it now to get scent-a-mental about Voyager along with us.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
