Nick Yarris is a speaker, writer and ex-death row inmate. I had the privilege of sitting down with Nick Yarris in London. Nick spent 22 years on death row for a murder he didn't commit. Nick is an author, motivational speaker, and the subject of the documentary film "Fear of 13," available on Netflix. He's also the inspiration for a play currently running in London, starring Adrien Brody. At 21, after enduring a violent childhood, Nick found himself in a situation that led to his wrongful conviction and life sentence. In the 1980s, prisons and guards were notoriously harsh to convicts of such crimes. Enforced silences, caged dog-fights, guard beatdowns, and "quality time" with psychopaths were commonplace. Nick became the FBI's Most Wanted Man after a prison escape but soon turned himself back in. He promised his mother he wouldn't waste his time on death row becoming embittered by his wrongful accusation. Nick became both the kindest and most dangerous man on death row. He taught himself to read in prison, becoming a student of language and religion. He wrote letters home to family, friends, and lawyers of other inmates. His eloquent and powerful communication led him to become the first death row inmate to request DNA testing. As a result, Nick was exonerated in 2004 after DNA technology proved his innocence. Nick spent 22 years behind the toughest bars for another man's crime. He was tortured mentally and physically for an act he did not commit. Yet, Nick tells me, "Death row is like a fond memory to me. I am no longer disturbed by what happened to me." Since his release, Nick has become an author, anti-death penalty activist, and inspiring public speaker. He uses his pain as his purpose. He uses his pain to connect. Five years ago, after seeing Nick on Joe Rogan, I reached out before I started my podcast. I thanked him, we connected, and we've been friends since. His story isn't just about survival—it's about thriving against impossible odds and emerging triumphant from trauma. This episode hits hard. Prepare for tears. --- Sponsors: Thanks Finnieston clothing in Glasgow for sponsoring this episode - https://finniestonclothing.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoo6PMx7H5ckHcQILm2wcGAT-bNC9pMAXfRlFiSi3B2ECXKxpShb Thanks to David Millar at Mantra Menswork for sponsoring this episode - https://mantra-menswork.mykajabi.com/man-alive?preview_theme_id=2155765370 Find Me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davidmcintoshjr/?hl=en Find Me on Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@developmentbydavid?lang=en Support the Podcast on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/developmentbydavid Subscribe to my newsletter: [https://developmentbydavid.substack](https://developmentbydavid.substack/).

This week on the pod I have my final guest who spent 22 years on death row in Prison after been wrongfully convicted of a crime. Nick talks about the horrific times he spent in solitary confinement, sound years with his thoughts, being beaten to near death and suffering head trauma. He also talks about how he learned to cultivate inner strength educating himself on the law and helping other prisoners and taking back his power through challenging the justice system which led to his release. Not only does Nik talk about his powerful life changing experience in Prison for a third of his life, he talk about others challenges he has faces in his personal life but that has not stopped him spreading kindness and love into the world. It truly shows that no matter what experience life can throw at us, we can always be kind to ourselves and others. Three years ago, I had the privilege of sharing the astonishing story of Nick Yarris. Little did I know, that our conversation would impact me the way it did. In 1982, at just 21, Nick was wrongfully convicted of murder he did not commit, and spent a mind-numbing 22 years on death row in Pennsylvania. His fate would have been sealed forever, was it not for his thirst for knowledge, which led him to devour many books and discover DNA testing in an article. He became the first death row prisoner to seek and insist on DNA testing, which ultimately revealed and proved his innocence. In this episode, I have the privilege of not only welcoming Nick back on the podcast for the third time, but also meeting him face-to-face for the first time ever. His remarkable story moves me every time I hear it, and I know it will do the same for you. During our conversation, we revisit the moment Nick's life changed by being sentenced to death, his traumatising prison memories, how he discovered a way to prove his innocence and his encouraging message to everyone. Despite all of the setbacks and injustices he faced, Nick remains one of the kindest people I know and will always be a dear friend. Tune in now for a conversation like no other. Join us for a compelling and gripping episode as we delve into the life of Nick Yarris, an American author and former death row inmate, who endured 22 years of wrongful conviction before finally proving his innocence. Born on May 22, 1961, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Nick's life took a tragic turn when he was arrested and charged with the murder of Linda Mae Craig in 1982. Throughout his trial, Nick steadfastly maintained his innocence, but in 1986, he was convicted and sentenced to death. What followed was a harrowing and arduous journey of 23 years spent on death row, where Nick faced unimaginable hardships and struggles. Despite the darkness surrounding him, Nick became an avid reader and self-educated himself, finding solace in knowledge and literature. In 2008, Nick authored a gripping book titled "Seven Days to Live," providing a candid and chilling account of his life on death row and the inherent flaws in the criminal justice system that led to his wrongful conviction. His story shed light on the tragic consequences of errors in the legal system and the devastating impact it can have on innocent lives. The turning point came in 2003 when DNA testing was conducted on evidence from the crime scene, finally revealing Nick's innocence. After spending more than two decades behind bars, Nick was exonerated and set free on January 16, 2003. The DNA evidence led to the identification of the actual perpetrator, bringing justice to Nick at last. Following his release, Nick Yarris emerged as a vocal advocate against the death penalty and an influential speaker on issues related to the flaws in the criminal justice system. His journey from wrongful conviction to exoneration showcases the urgent need for reform and raises critical questions about the reliability of the legal process. In this poignant and intriguing interview, Nick opens up about life on death row, the struggles he endured, and his life after prison. Join us as we delve into the profound impact of wrongful convictions, the fight for justice, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity. Don't miss this thought-provoking episode that sheds light on the urgent need for criminal justice reform and the importance of fighting for truth and fairness in the legal system.

This week we discuss the murder of April Tinsley in Indiana, where Bachelor Ben Higgins is from, whose murder was solved decades later thanks to DNA technology (WARNING: This story involves the sexual assault and murder of a child). We also discuss the murder of Linda Craig and the exoneration of Nick Yarris who spent 22 years on death row after being wrongfully convicted of Linda’s murder. Both of the Nicks get a redemption story this time around, and Megan loves that. Also, because of our recent conversation around Just Mercy, Megan felt the need to continue the conversation this week with a story of another wrongfully convicted person. In today's episode Alice is joined by the amazing Nick Yarris. Nick is a writer and a speaker, he has a documentary of his story on Netflix called 'The Fear of 13', where he shares his own story of being wrongly imprisoned on death row for 22 years for the murder and rape of a woman he had never even met. He fights for other wrongly incarcerated prisoners on death row to see them freed and recently after the podcast was released, won a long battle he talks about on there, to see his friend Walter Ogrod, whom he met on death row, finally be released as he was also innocent.  In this episode we talked all about Nick's story of how he got to be on death row, how he managed to eventually prove his innocence, how he made sense of spirituality, how he held onto love and kindness on death row where he was being treated with such inhumane hate and how used neuroplasticity and kindness to himself and others, to heal  from all the trauma he went through. Nick Yarris is the subject of the Netflix documentary The Fear of 13 released in 2015. He is the author of the autobiography Seven Days to Live My Life (2008). "We truly are, every one of us, living under a death sentence." The words from one of the most extraordinary podcast guests I have ever interviewed. Nick Yarris was on death row for 22 years for a crime that he DID NOT commit. Let that sink in... imagine spending 22 years of being tortured and abused in jail, thinking that you were going to die for a crime that you DID NOT commit. On this episode, Nick discussed dealing with abuse and life in prison, how he stayed motivated, maintaining positivity and hope throughout his time. Nick also shared what his life after prison looks like - sharing his remarkable story on stages, writing his books and in a Netflix documentary about him. This podcast truly moved me. Anyone who saw the live recording was both horrified yet incredibly inspired by Nick's story.

S9E5: Nick Yarris: Waylaid by a Lie - Part 2 In part 2 of the Nick Yarris story, we pick up where we left off with Nick turning himself in after his unintentional escape from death row. It’s about 3 years and 2 months after Linda Mae Craig was found beaten, raped, and stabbed to death in a church parking lot in Chichester, PA. As you’ve already heard Nick recount, he had an altercation with a police officer during a traffic stop that led to an accidental discharge of the officer’s gun, followed by a laundry list of trumped up charges. In a turn of events that he would come to sincerely regret, Nick tried to exchange false information about Linda Mae Craig’s attacker for his own freedom. When caught in his lie, the state fixed a case against him that would lead to an almost 22 year stint on death row. Eventually, the same biological evidence that was used to convict him became the evidence that would set him free and win him $4 million in his civil suit against Delaware County, Pennsylvania. In the 2nd half of this interview, Nick Yarris tells us about his encounters with other innocent men and serial killers alike, being the 1st to request post conviction DNA testing from death row, his education, exoneration, botched release, and his life, post exoneration. His incredible story has served to inform a truly unique, yet relatable, perspective. S9E5: Nick Yarris: Waylaid by a Lie - Part 1 On December 16th, 1981, Linda Mae Craig was found beaten, raped, and stabbed to death in a church parking lot about a mile and a half away from where her car was discovered. A few days later, Nick Yarris, a troubled young man linked with petty crimes and substance abuse, was pulled over for a traffic violation in a stolen car and got into an altercation with the arresting officer that included an accidental discharge of the officer’s service pistol. This incident spiraled into a laundry list of charges. Yarris had seen the news about Linda Mae Craig, and in a desperate attempt to save himself, he tried to trade false information about her attacker to garner leniency. When authorities got wind of his trickery, they turned the charges on Nick. The prosecution manipulated several eyewitness testimonies, hid or destroyed the case history, and employed misleading serology in order to obtain his wrongful conviction. However, between his first day in prison to exoneration by the biological evidence that put him there, Nick Yarris lived (and continues to live) out one of the greatest and most unbelievable stories ever told. In part 1 of Nick Yarris’ story, he tells us about surviving sexual assault, repeated run-ins with the law, getting waylaid by his own lie, his trial and conviction, “Gladiator Sundays,” and accidentally (yet successfully) escaping from death row, only to turn himself in when he reached Florida - a state where he is still not welcome as a free man. Comparing Nick Yarris’ story to a rollercoaster ride would only serve as a compliment to roller coasters. For example, in 2008, Nick Yarris sued Delaware County and won $4 million. Then, it was stolen from him, and we didn’t even cover that in this episode. http://www.wrongfulconvictionpodcast.com Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom is a production of Lava for Good™ Podcasts in association with Signal Co No1 and PRX.

Can you believe the boys made it to the 100 episode mark?? Neither can they! Kevin & Sully have a great conversation for their anniversary episode and reminisce, as well as, discuss some of the "behind the scenes" things that happen while recording, or not recording. Kevin forgot to hit the record button! What??!! Yep, oops. Even after 100 episodes (more if you include the Business Spotlights), they still make mistakes. No one is perfect right? The guys laugh about it, because fortunately enough, they figured it out only 10 minutes into their recording of this episode. Kevin brings up the fact that Halloween is this week, Sully's birthday and their 100th episode. What an amazing week! Lots of good things happening and good stuff coming down the chute. Sully jokes that he isn't 25, after Kevin tries to say that's how old he is. Sully will be 36 and it's hitting him hard. They talk about what it's like at this age, to wait by the mailbox for blood work from the doctors office, and how the time seems to go by even faster the more you age. They shift their focus to some of their favorite episodes. Sully brings up how Sean Whalen's episode has changed his mindset in life, and how he carries himself and his perspectives a little differently now. Kevin says that he includes that in one of his "top" episodes along with Nick Yarris and Psychic Greg Stanley. He calls them the "most powerful" yet. If you haven't listened to those episodes yet, they're a must. Kevin's favorite episode so far was when Lauren first joined them, along with Officer Ashley Smith. He talks about how they meshed so well together and it was a hilarious episode. They continue to go through a lot of the past episodes for a better part of this one. Kevin brings up Halloween and if Sully is taking his dogs trick or treating. Sully says no, but he does sit out and will occasionally give a beer to some of the dads taking their kids out for the evening. Now that's a house every parent should stop at! Kevin wraps things up congratulating Sully, Crystal, Rianna and Lauren for their accomplishment and says they're ready for 100 more episodes. He wishes Sully a Happy Birthday and all of the listeners a happy & safe Halloween. A note from Kevin - "THANK YOU to our listeners, fans, followers, friends and family for the support in this endeavor. Sully and myself never anticipated the podcast gaining so much traction in the industry, but here we are! We'd like to thank ALL of our past guests for taking time from their busy lives to create some content with us, and we look forward to working with so many more in the future. Our mission is to create content for people combatting PTSD. That hasn't changed. We will continue to do our best at providing high quality, relevant content to our listeners. Thank you, again!"

Famous Death Row Inmate, Nick Yarris, comes to Hellbound with Halos for one of the most gripping and powerful episodes to date. Nick Yarris is a writer and professional speaker who spent 22 years on death row after being wrongly convicted of murder. His books 'The Fear Of 13, Countdown To Execution' as well as 'The Kindness Approach' are available on Amazon and via http://nickyarris.org Nick talks about how his Joe Rogan Experience appearance was one of his worst appearances after his release. He apologizes to Kevin & Sully for it and doing a disservice to all the listeners that heard it. Kevin doesn't understand why he feels that way and disagree's with Nick. Kevin tells him that it touched more people than he probably will ever realize and it's the emotion that connects his story with people. Nick accepts Kevin's theory however, he says he was set up prior to the Joe Rogan Podcast and was lied to by an acquaintance to the assistant of Steadman Graham (Oprah Winfrey's partner). He explained that this man lied to him, that Steadman knew of Nick, and was blown away by his story. That was the lie. Steadman Graham knew nothing of Nick Yarris, and when they met, Nick had to introduce himself and explain his story. This took Nick by such surprise that he left the meeting abruptly, and went back to his hotel. Stewing all night, Nick was disheveled. Nick discusses how that played a huge role on his emotional interview on Rogan's podcast. He say's he was "all over the place" in the interview and wasn't able to tell his story appropriately. This is the first chance he's had to do that since the Joe Rogan Experience appearance. Kevin & Sully were awestruck by some of Nick's chilling stories. From stealing money and cars, to winding up in California at the age of 17, to being wrongly convicted of rape and murder, which was the ultimate reason he landed on death row. Nick discusses the deep thoughts he had while sitting in his cell, and what he learned from the thousands of books he read over the 22 year journey. He is a very well spoken man, with a heart bigger than life itself. He has a wife, Laura and 2 daughters that currently live with him. They reside in Oregon.

The pair met at a Halloween party in 2014 when Karen was talking about a gruesome event she witnessed. While the rest of the party guests backed away slowly, the normally socially anxious Georgia approached and the pair talked about murder and true crime for the rest of the night. Both thrilled they’d found someone who shared the others’ interest in the macabre, they decided to start a podcast they thought would be listened to by precisely no one. Fast forward a couple of years and MFM is one of the most popular true crime comedy podcasts world wide, complete with a fanbase who refer to themselves as Murderinos. Most of the show’s charm comes from the girls’ half-assed approach and playful banter that lightens the mood of seriously fucked-up topics. They don’t care if they get their facts twisted, they’re all about retelling their favourite tales in an entertaining way and normalising people’s interest in true crime, while talking openly about mental health issues and trying to smash toxic masculinity. Stay sexy, and don't get murdered!Recommended episodes for Zane and Pat respectively:#18: Investig-eighteen Discovery - Lawrence Singleton and Franklin Delano Floyd.#45: Funky Diva - Lord Lucan and Summerhill Road MurdersOther picks from Liz include: #31 for the Lululemon Murder story, #44 for the heavy-hitter tale of John Wayne Gacy, #33 for the amazing survivor story of Jennifer Morey and pretty much any episode where Karen retells an episode of I Survived.Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.

Television reporter and writer Tom Mangold; death row survivor Nick Yarris; rally car driver Catie Munnings and Professor Vanessa Toulmin of the National Fairground Archive join Libby Purves. Catie Munnings is an 18-year-old rally car driver. She won the FIA European Rally Championships Ladies' trophy 2016 after only her first season in the sport. At 13 she could execute a perfect handbrake turn and then followed her father Chris, a former rally driver who ran the London Rally School at Brands Hatch, into the sport. When she isn't training in the gym or on the track, Catie has been campaigning to encourage more girls to get into motorsport. Tom Mangold is a television reporter and author who worked as an investigative journalist on the BBC's current affairs series Panorama for 26 years - its longest serving reporter. In his memoir, Splashed!, he recounts his years in the 1950s and 60s on some of Fleet Street's most ruthless newspapers - a time when chequebook journalism ruled. During his career he covered stories from the Profumo Affair to conflicts around the world including Vietnam and Northern Ireland. Splashed! - A Life from Print to Panorama is published by Biteback. Nick Yarris spent 23 years in prison, 22 of them on death row, before DNA evidence finally cleared him in 2003. In 1982 Yarris, a 21-year-old car thief and drug addict from Philadelphia, was sentenced to death for the abduction, rape and murder of a young woman. He spent the next 22 years - much of it in solitary confinement - enduring the casual brutality routinely dished out by guards and inmates. During his time in prison he read up to three books a day and studied the details of his own legal case. Later, as the technology developed, he pressed for post-conviction DNA testing which eventually led to his acquittal. The Fear of 13 Countdown to Execution: My Fight for Survival on Death Row by Nick Yarris is published by Cornerstone. Professor Vanessa Toulmin is director of City and Cultural Engagement at the University of Sheffield. She is also research director of the National Fairground Archive and her collection of circus and fairground material features in a new exhibition at the university. Born into a fairground family herself, her archive also includes material relating to early cinema, world's fairs, magic, wild west shows, menageries, variety, seaside entertainment, and amusement parks. The Spectacle and Wonder exhibition is at the University of Sheffield Library. Producer: Paula McGinley.
