The High Court in Pretoria recently issued an order following an out-of-court settlement reached between conservation groups and the fishing industry, to establish exclusion zones around penguin colonies for the next ten years. These measures are vital for the survival of the African Penguin, but what impact might it have on the fishing community and perhaps even on the price of fish? Lester Kiewit speaks to Shaheen Moolla, a practising advocate of the High Court of South Africa and an adviser on fisheries management.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Isolated to the southern portion of the African continent. Multiple pressures such as over fishing off the African coast, humans destroying African Penguin guano nests and using it for fertilizer, climate change, ocean pollution and many other pressures all have led to a massive decrease in African Penguin populations. Today they are listed as Endangered by the IUCN with around 10,000 breeding pairs!! The fragile penguin populations depend on sardines and anchovies for their diet. Competition for fish stocks is high here, with sardine and anchovy fisheries in Algoa Bay targeting the waters around St Croix as it is the closest source. No-take zones contribute to improving feeding conditions for penguin populations. We are urging the minister to immediately close the feeding grounds of South Africa's African penguin colonies to the sardine or anchovy fishing industry for as long as necessary while their numbers are plummeting.Professor Lorien Pichegru is Director of the Institute for Coastal and Marine Research at Nelson Mandela University.
