The “Build KZN Better” summit will be held in Durban next week to bring key stakeholders under one roof to find solutions to issues around the built environment. In this interview with BizNews, KZN Public Works and Infrastructure MEC Martin Meyer gives an update on what has already been achieved. Meyer also shares the story behind the dismissal of the Supply Chain Management Director after the exposure of R1,1 billion in misconduct relating to the awarding of 29 contracts to one firm. He speaks of the discovery that over 50 former officials still had their cell phones - and how drastic cost-cutting in his own office saved R1.8 million in six months. Meanwhile, the department has brought its debt of almost R800 million owed to contractors down to just over R200 million. Meyer further describes the strides being made in the fight against the Construction Mafia.

We're about 10 days away, from South Africans BEING ABLE TO ACCESS a PORTION of their Retirement Savings. So there will be 2 pot: One pot, from where you can WITHDRAW when you want to. And the other pot, will REMAIN LOCKED - and you can only ACCESS it, when you are at least 55 years old. On the 31st of August; a ONCE OFF TRANSFER will be made. 10% of your Retirement Savings - up to a Maximum of R30 000 - will be TRANSFERRED to your Savings Pot. So, if 10% of your Retirement Money is less than R30 000 - let's say R20 000… they'll put R20 000. But 10% of your Retirement Money is R30 000 or more - they'll put in R30 000 in your Accessible Savings Pot. From the 1st of September - the money you pay every month towards your Retirement - will be SPLIT into 2. 1 third will go into the ACCESSIBLE Savings Pot. And 2 thirds will go into the LOCKED Retirement Age Pot. So, if your monthly contribution is R300 - R100 will go into the Savings Pot and R200 will go into the Retirement Pot.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

City of Johannesburg finance MMC Dada Morero says the metro management would start a process of reviewing R200 prepaid electricity charge after outcry from residents. The municipality says it was willing to review the price with a view of decreasing it by R50. But this could only be implemented in January. The municipality would however have to find at least R80m to cover the shortfall should it decrease the amount to R150. According to Morero, the City was forced to introduce the surcharge to prepaid customers after Eskom withdrew the subsidy it previously offered to City Power. The MMC was in conversation with SundayTimes politics reporter Kgothatso Madisa.
A review of South Africa's electricity pricing policy will be initiated with the goal of addressing an increasing affordability "crisis" that is undermining electricity access for an increasing number of impoverished consumers. This announcement was made by Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa against the backdrop of protests in Johannesburg in response to the introduction of an R200 monthly surcharge on pre-paid customers to cover City Power's network cost.Energy Expert explains this further with Motheo Khoaripe.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Action SA has stated that it is willing to collaborate with the ANC in Joburg, but only under three specific conditions: Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda must be removed, the R200 surcharge on prepaid electricity consumers' bills must be scrapped, and the speaker position in Tshwane must be given to an Action SA member as originally intended. The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse has expressed concern over the City of Johannesburg's new prepaid electricity surcharge. Starting this month, the city's power utility, City Power has implemented a R200 surcharge, which includes a R130 monthly network capacity fee and a R70 service fee on prepaid meter users. OUTA has criticized the initiative, calling it a simplistic revenue-raising effort by the city's administration. For more on this Elvis Presslin spoke to OUTA ceo Wayne Duvenage

It was unfair for postpaid customers to pay a service fee while prepaid customers were excused, says City Power after imposing a R200 monthly charge for residents. The order received backlash from the public amid tough economic times.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg has voiced its opposition to the newly introduced R200 electricity surcharge. In a statement, the party condemned both the 12.7% tariff hike and the additional fee imposed on prepaid customers as unjust and unfair. The DA warned the City Council that this move will disproportionately affect residents, who are already seeing a significant reduction in the value of their electricity purchases due to the surcharge. Joining Elvis Presslin to discuss this further is DA Joburg Councillor Nicole Van Dyk
As of 1 July, Gauteng residents on Joburg City Power's prepaid meters will be charged a recurring R200 monthly fee. City Power said the new fee was split into two - R70 for service charges and R130 for network capacity charges. The fee is in addition to the 12.7% tariff increase which the utility also implemented on 1 July. Johannesburg City Power said that it customers had not been contributing sufficiently to its service and capacity charges. The utility said it was no longer sustainable for it to provide these services without charging. City Power's general manager for pricing and tariffs, Frank Hinda, explained how this would work if a customer bought electricity for R200.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This audio is brought to you by Endress and Hauser, a leading supplier of products, solutions and services for industrial process measurement and automation. The combination of public and private procurement of large-scale renewables in South Africa signals increased stability for manufacturers of key components, a new GreenCape report argues. Published ahead of the release of the much-anticipated South African Renewable Energy Masterplan (SAREM), which will outline the country's official approach to localising renewables value chains, GreenCape's 'Large-scale Renewable Energy' report estimates that 6 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) and 4 GW of wind power could be added through private procurement alone by 2030. This would be in addition to public procurement, which was expected to add 2.6 GW of solar PV, 3.2 GW of wind and 3.7 GWh of battery energy storage systems over the same period. Published as one of three sector-focused national studies released as part of its 2024 Market Intelligence Report, the non-profit organisation said the emergence of private procurement should help mitigate the boom-bust cycles associated with the market's previous heavy reliance on public procurement. The emergence of the private market has been facilitated by market reforms allowing distributed projects of any size to proceed without a licence, while the pace of procurement has been further accelerated by a sustained period of intense loadshedding, which has only recently abated. Speaking at a public launch in Johannesburg, Ulrich Terblance, who helped author the large-scale renewables report, said that the public and private markets to 2030 would be relatively similar in size at about R200-billion apiece, which could be sufficient to stimulate domestic manufacturing investment. He said the combined markets should also result in yearly deployments of about 2 GW, which should be sufficient to support the manufacture of certain components, even though such an installation rate was insufficient to address the overall supply deficit. The report estimates the total market size for domestic renewables components at R42-billion over the period to 2030. "Additionally, there is potential to manufacture components for both utility-scale and small-scale renewable energy projects, such as balance of plant or system components. "Smaller-scale projects can provide a steady demand, reducing manufacturers' vulnerability to fluctuations in utility-scale project demand and resulting in cost savings through economies of scale," the report states. GreenCape's separate 'Energy Services' report highlights the recent surge in rooftop solar and battery installations by businesses and households and estimate the overall market size for the period to 2030 at R88.4-billion. Energy programme manager Jack Redmore forecast that the small-scale market would continue to add between 1 GW and 2 GW despite the recent easing of loadshedding, but expressed caution about household affordability, with credit approvals by banks having slipped in recent months. Nevertheless, he argued that the large- and small-scale markets combined were providing demand stability that had been absent previously and which represented an opportunity for domestic manufacturers. Redmore noted that the South African government was working towards supporting the localisation of renewable-energy manufacturing through various industrial policy interventions, including SAREM, which was in its final draft. Engineering News confirmed with a Department of Mineral Resource and Energy official that the SAREM drafting process had been finalised, but the official was unable to confirm when the document would receive ministerial sign-off and be released for public consumption. GreenCape's third market intelligence report, which focuses on electric vehicles, highlights the potential not only for electric busses, trucks and taxis but also motorcycles used for last-mile deliveries. Report author Prian Reddy said the b...

Kevin Milehame, the DA's shadow minister of Energy, has warned that the deal could cost South African taxpayers a staggering R200 billion, while only generating 1200 MW of power, equivalent to a single stage of load shedding. Milehame told BizNews that he was concerned about what appearedto be the bending of rules to favour Karpowership and that it presented another opportunity for corruption. South Africa is known for exporting raw minerals, fruit and wine, but what is probably not that well-known is that it has a thriving space industry that supplies satellite components and services globally. South African space products are incorporated into a multitude of international satellites. Exports generated by the country's space industry amounted to around R200 million in 2022. Stellenbosch space technology solutions provider, Dragonfly Aerospace is building on that history and has provided ‘eyes in the sky' for several missions in space. CEO and Founder of Dragonfly Aerospace, Bryan Dean told BizNews that the company's technology has been built on the technology that has been developed in Stellenbosch since the 90s. Dragonfly Aerospace has a camera that has been flown to an asteroid and in January 2023 they launched the first of a seven-satellite constellation in low earth, called the EOS SAT-1 from Cape Canaveral on a Space X rocket to monitor agriculture. It was once a state-of-the-art training and breeding facility, responsible for some of the SAPS' most high-value assets – police dogs. Now, with 214 SAPS dogs valued at around R200 000 each recently handed over to the NSPCA, there are almost no dogs left to train.

Guest: Pearl Kgalegi is Head of Currency Mangement at SARB A listener emailed John with a question about the old R200. A retail store refused the note and shared that the store had issued a notification to their front-line staff that they will not be accepting them. This brought the question. When is the R200 note (Cheetah series 2nd issue) no longer legal tender?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
