Each year some birds migrate thousands of kilometres. But there's evidence climate change is already affecting this seasonal survival strategy.
Earlier this year experts from bird charities across Europe gathered in Scotland to share how they are working to save nature across the continent. Stephen is joined by Isobel Mercer to talk about how working together across national boundaries is more important than ever. We hear from people working all over Europe about the challenges they face. And there's time for some nature news including a close pass by a common sandpiper and a birding first for Isobel.LINKSFind out more about Birdlife's work here https://www.birdlife.org/europe-and-central-asia/More on bird flu here https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/advice/how-you-can-help-birds/disease-and-garden-wildlife/avian-influenza-updates/Spotted Flycatcher ID https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/spotted-flycatcher/

At the foot of the Aberdare mountains in Kenya, about an hour's drive to Lake Naivasha, a youth group is encouraging farmers to preserve the grasslands to conserve the Sharpe's Longclaw bird species. The Njambini Wool Crafters buy wool from these farmers to ensure they generate income through sheep-keeping. The group produces yarns made of raw sheep wool. These yarns are sold to curio shop operators or woven into blankets, carpets, rugs, throw blankets, scarves, shawls, and socks.Samuel Bakari, an ecologist with the Friends of Kinangop Plateau, told the Africa Climate Conversations that in 2000 BirdLife international records showed between 10-20,000 mature Sharpe's longclaw birds in Kenya. Today over 20 years later, Bakari says this number has reduced to less than 2000 individuals. XEbAAPN2zmIgtP1nZXmg

Lead report author Lucy Haskell explains BirdLife International's State of the World's Birds 2022 report (it comes out every 4 years), finding that nearly half of the world's bird species are in decline, painting the most concerning picture yet for the natural world, But it also identifies all the many human-caused drivers of species loss and the critical solutions we desperately need to save nature if we can urgently garner the political will and financial commitment from decision-makers to implement these solutions at scale and pace. This depends on which politicians we elect into office in the next decade and if they make environmental protection, including climate change, a priority. We particularly discuss agricultural and fishing solutions and logging and deforestation solutions to protect bird species and their habitats and note how conservation efforts over the decades have helped reduce the number of birds that have gone extinct, so we know what works. We just need to make these solutions a political priority. This comprehensive report can be found at the website https://www.birdlife.org/ It's got such beautiful images and so many charts and maps and infographics to make it easy to stay engaged and recognize core findings and see how everything fits together. I think Kids can engage with the report too as they must be part of the solution. Nature Knows: Conversations with Wild Warriors and Change Makers
There are so many misconceptions about birds. For instance, the phrase 'bird brain' was traditionally used to suggest someone was less than intelligent. But birds are a lot smarter than we've given them credit for. All you need to do is watch a covid in action and you'll see how clever birds can be (hint - in some ways, more clever than us humans!). In this episode, I chat with Melissa Howes-Whitecross, the host of Conservation Conversations and the Landscape Conservation Program Manager of BirdLife SA. We cover the vital work BirdLife is doing in South Africa as well as around the globe, protecting species and habitat while also integrating community into the conservation process, as well as discuss her mission to bring more minorities into birding. (I also fawn a little over the accent because, well, it's so awesome!) So grab a drink and snack and get your bird nerd on with us! Tegan Douglas is a bird researcher, proud Bird Nerd and the Citizen Science Project Co-Ordinator at Birdlife Australia's Western Australia office. In this episode we talk about many of Western Australia's endangered birds, Carnaby's Black Cockatoo, Western Ground Parrot, Noisy Scrub-bird, Western Bristlebird and the efforts to secure the populations. Tegan tells me about her earlier fieldwork with the Red-browed Treecreeper, and why she loves Australian Babblers. In a wide-ranging (and fun) conversation we discuss many conservation strategies, modern urban landscapes, the largest area of natural woodland on the planet and the Western Australian landscape feature that is visible from space!
