"Energy Is An Instrument And An Objective Of Geopolitical Tensions" Featuring Dr. Francesco Sassi, University of Oslo

C.O.B. Tuesday

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2025 52:22

Today we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Francesco Sassi for a wide-ranging discussion on global energy and geopolitics. Francesco is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oslo and previously served as a Research Fellow in energy geopolitics and markets at Ricerche Industriali ed Energetiche (RIE). Francesco holds a Ph.D. in Political Science – Geopolitics from the University of Pisa, where he focused his research on the Sino-Russian gas interdependence. We were drawn to his straightforward analysis, insightful commentary, and use of maps to bring complex dynamics to life. We were thrilled to visit with Francesco and learn from his perspective. In our conversation, we explore the rise of political risk in energy markets and the growing global interdependence of the energy system, driven by factors such as China's increasing influence in shaping energy geopolitics, new interdependencies created by energy technology, trade and manufacturing, as well as disruptions like COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war. We examine Russian gas volumes to Europe, Spain's leadership in clean energy and the implications of its recent blackout, and the dual forces shaping Europe: rising cross-border interconnectivity projects alongside increasing energy nationalism. We touch on President Trump's recent visit to the Middle East, which is part of broader interest in energy and AI investment in the region, OPEC+ strategy, market share pressures, and the impact of low oil prices on Russia. Francesco shares his perspective on the potential for a Putin-Zelensky meeting, tensions between India and Pakistan, and how energy policy is becoming increasingly central to electoral platforms in Europe. We turn to Argentina's recent progress under President Milei, Israeli investment in lithium extraction technology in Argentina's lithium triangle, and how energy and mineral resources are increasingly being used as tools of foreign policy and geopolitical leverage. We close with Francisco's thoughts on the growing power of energy as a force shaping international relations and global industrial strategy. It was a dynamic and insightful conversation. Mike Bradley kicked off the discussion by noting that broader markets rallied substantially on Monday following news that China and the U.S. have agreed to a “tentative” tariff deal. Broader equity markets (S&P 500) have completely retraced their losses since Trump's April 2nd Day of Liberation and are now up slightly (+4%). Meanwhile, the S&P Volatility Index has plunged from its April 8th tariff volatility highs and is now trading near YTD lows, something to be monitored closely as any surprise event could send broader markets lower. On the bond market front, the 10yr bond yield is trading sideways even though April CPI came in lower than expected. PPI will be released on Wednesday and if it too prints lower than expected, it could provide room for the Fed to begin cutting rates at their June 18th FOMC meeting. On the crude oil front, WTI price has rebounded nicely over the past week and now trades at ~$63/bbl. Oil traders remain focused on future OPEC+ production increases and increasingly on whether U.S. E&Ps will begin altering their 2025 capex plans at these lower prices levels. He wrapped up with a look at key events this week, notably NRG Energy's acquisition of LS Power's portfolio of natural gas generation assets (~13gw for ~$12 billion). The move follows Constellation Energy's mid-January deal to acquire Calpine Corp. and demonstrates that both companies are positioning themselves for an acceleration in electricity growth this decade. Many thanks to Francesco for sharing his time and insights with us today. We hope you enjoy the discussion as much as we did! Our best to you all.

Atlantic Vision's Role in Expanding Fiber Connectivity: A Conversation with Sebastian Sassi, Podcast

At the ITA Showcase, I had the chance to sit down with Sebastian Sassi of Atlantic Vision, who invited me to this important regional event. This gathering brings together regional fiber operators—the people actually building broadband infrastructure in places that need it most. "Broadband connectivity is a democratizing agent," said Sassi. "Access to information fuels commerce, education, and political engagement. To be disconnected in the 21st century is to be left behind." The Vital Role of Regional Fiber Operators Large telecoms like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T aren't prioritizing rural fiber expansion, but regional operators are stepping in to bridge the gap. As Sebastian put it, “If we waited for the big Tier 1 providers to build fiber in these areas, it would be a long wait for a train that's not coming.” These local providers are deploying fiber where big corporations won't, ensuring more homes and businesses get connected. What Does Atlantic Vision Do? Atlantic Vision provides the last-mile fiber connectivity—the cables, terminals, and infrastructure that connect end users to high-speed networks. The company offers faster, more affordable, and higher-quality solutions than the industry giants that have dominated this space for years. A Huge Economic Opportunity for MSPs & Partners Billions of dollars are being invested in broadband expansion over the next five years, creating massive opportunities for regional fiber operators, MSPs, and vendors who support these projects. Atlantic Vision offers a competitive alternative in a market long controlled by just a few major players. A Telecom Veteran Driving Change Sebastian Sassi has been in telecom since 1999, with experience in CPE, last-mile fiber, software, and cybersecurity. He understands the industry from both a technology and business perspective—and he's leading Atlantic Vision in its mission to challenge the traditional fiber duopoly. "The Corning and Comscope duopoly needs to be challenged. They should be looking over their shoulders, because we're coming." Learn More Visit www.atlanticvision.com

Scambi e volontariato: Programmi come Workaway, WWOOF Italia e HelpX offrono vitto e alloggio in cambio di aiuto in vari ambiti. 3. 4. Biglietti disponibili nelle stazioni ferroviarie, tabaccherie autorizzate e online. 7.

A couple of principles within archeology that should interest us as Mormons are migrations (the study of historical human migrations) and diffusion (the study of how human ideas and practices are transmitted from one distinct group of people to another). If the Book of Mormon is true, we should expect to see at least echo's of migration and diffusion in the Americas. Now what if I told you that there seems to be some evidence of migration and diffusion between ancient America and Carthage (modern-day Tunisia)? Interested yet? Well, what if I also told you that that same evidence might also have a connection to the story of Mulek in the Book of Mormon? I bet if your anything like me you're interested now. There are a group of people from very different walks of life who have come together to study this evidence. They are John Lefgren, Mike & Betty LaFontaine, Blaise Colasante, & all the way from Tunisia Eryj Ben Sassi and they all join me on the podcast today to discuss their findings that if correct could not only change the historical narrative of the United States but also could lend evidence for the historicity of the Book of Mormon.  --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dave-kirkenbower/support

On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Dr Melissa Sassi, CEO and Co-Founder of Skills Hustle, a pre-seed edtech company committed to closing the skills gap and transforming learners into earners. Skills Hustle's platform takes an innovative approach, offering gamified, interactive, and practical modules that engage learners on a deeper level. With a focus on community building, the platform provides access to thought leaders, networking opportunities, and real-world challenges such as innovation challenges and hackathons, enabling learners to develop practical skills and solve real business challenges. In this episode Melissa shares her insights, experiences, and innovative ideas in leveraging technology and education to drive social impact and foster sustainable growth. KEY TAKEAWAYS I've spent the last 10 years of my career working between Microsoft and IBM, and I've always created my own jobs, I've never flowed through the ‘right' career progression plan. I ran startup accelerators; at Microsoft it was all about building internet and energy access solutions around the world and bringing digital skills to connect it. At IBM I focussed on data protection, privacy and security in heavily regulated industries like FinTech, HealthTech and InsurTech. I've also had a couple of stints on Wall Street and had my own nonprofit teaching tens of thousands of kids to code in 12 countries. Currently I run a venture studio with my partner. One day my daughter, who was living in Tunisia with her father at the time, said she didn't have access to a computer in her classroom. They had one shared across 40 kids. I realized there's no way that she's going to be prepared for the future of work and the digital economy. I could get her devices for home, but what about all the other kids in her classroom? So I went on a mission to get computers for the class. But as I did this I realized the bigger picture that access to tech, skills, the internet and what role they play – including affordability – in driving outcomes in healthcare, education, economics, getting a job, everything we have and do centres around tech. I realised half the world isn't connected to the internet and I looked at what I could do to change that. My partner and I are still working on how to demystify what a venture studio is or what a venture builder does versus a VC, an accelerator and an incubator. We combine all those things together. In the future I'd love to see situations where my founders raise a shit-ton of money, come up with amazing solutions that are powering the world, changing things that make the world a better place but also making money at the same time. I believe in doing well while doing good.  BEST MOMENTS‘Everyone is a FinTech these days, including Timbaland.'‘I had it ingrained in my soul that I needed to work, to be productive, independent, to be able to take care of myself. From hard work comes outcomes in life that are financial in nature, it may be experiences, but you've got to work to achieve.'‘I was part of a broken system and I perpetuated a broken system without knowing it.'‘We focus on growth from 3 perspectives: Technical enablement, thinking about what the business model is, and access to partnerships.' ABOUT THE GUESTDr Melissa Sassi has dedicated her career to the intersection of technology, education, economic development, social impact, startups, and sustainability. With extensive global experience, including visits to 60 countries, she brings first-hand knowledge of the challenges and opportunities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Melissa's doctoral thesis focused on the transformative role of digital inclusion in solving the SDGs. As the CEO and Co-Founder of Skills Hustle, a pre-seed edtech company, Melissa aims to bridge the skills gap and empower learners to become learners. Skills Hustle offers an interactive and practical learning platform, with a focus on gamification and real-world application. Through live sessions, mentors, innovation challenges, and hackathons, learners acquire valuable skills while solving authentic business problems.
