Today's guest intersects two key areas for electronics manufacturers: circularity and inventory management. "The cost of a component isn't just the cost of a component. It's the cost to the planet."   That's what Kenny McGee, chief executive of Component Sense, says. Component Sense is an Edinburgh, Scotland-based company that leads electronic manufacturers toward zero waste. It takes brand-new, perfectly good excess components and redistributes them to other manufacturers for use.  We talk about the market for recycled electronics, how major OEMs are circumventing European Union reuse and recycling laws, what companies can do with excess stock, and the horrific conditions at a reclaim dump in Agbogbloshie, Ghana, that inspired him to make a documentary. 

A devastating fire broke out late Sunday night, at Agbogbloshie in Accra, engulfing several wooden structures and causing significant damage, though fortunately no lives were lost. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) received the alarm at 9:38 pm and responded promptly.

Every year, up to 50 million tons of electronic waste - computers, television sets, mobile phones, household appliances - are discarded in the developed world. Since recycling is costly, around 75% of this waste ends up being shipped to countries such as India, China or Ghana, where it is dumped illegally, polluting the environment and affecting the lives of those forced to live with it. Mike Anane, Ghana's most experienced environmental journalist goes on an investigation which begins in the heart of the City of London, takes us to Spain, Germany and Brussels, and ends at Agbogbloshie, one of the largest e-waste dumps in Africa. There was drama at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region after a suspect thief, identified as Isaac Owusu, was busted for stealing wele (cow skin). The suspect, said to be a 28-year-old, clandestinely entered the Agbogbloshie market in the Kwahu West Municipality to commit the act.

In 2015 the United Nations announced a radical plan to change the world.Global leaders drew up a list of 17 "sustainable development goals" to create a blueprint for a better future. Governments agreed to support the goals which cover gender equality, health provision, a good education and much more. We've asked 17-year-olds from 17 different countries tell us what they think needs to change if the world is to meet those goals by 2030.Seventeen-year-old Elvis Bonam lives in a slum called Agbogbloshie in Ghana's capital city, Accra. The settlement is close to a huge rubbish dump. It is crowded and noisy and Elvis has to pay to use a rickety bridge over a lagoon to get to school because there are few paved roads in Agbogbloshie. Digital Imaginaries - Africas in Production | Opening Weekend [18.11.2018] On the weekend following the opening of the research and exhibition project »Digital Imaginaries – Africas in Production«, a comprehensive supporting program was offered at the ZKM. In addition to discussions with artists from various African countries, there had been guided tours through the exhibition with the international curators and artists, as well as a coding workshop and a maker's brunch with representatives of maker spaces from Togo, Ghana, Senegal and local initiatives from Karlsruhe. Presentation with the Woe Lab (Togo), Agbogbloshie Makerspace Platform (Ghana), Fablab »DEFKO AK NIĒP« (Senegal), Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct (South Africa), and local initiatives from Karlsruhe Africa is changing – radically – and digitization is playing a pivotal role. On this continent that has the world’s youngest population, digital practices are emerging that transform Africa’s societies and their global perception. Apps and digital content developed in Africa are increasingly entering the global technosphere. African digital infrastructures meanwhile remain marked by local and global asymmetries despite the widespread use of mobile phones. New forms of digital inequality are accompanying the rise of a number of well-connected digital hubs and scenes. African digital innovations and practices still rely on infrastructures dominated by the Global North, and increasingly also by China. The exhibition and research project »Digital Imaginaries«, which was developed in collaboration with partners in Dakar and Johannesburg, takes this contradictory diversity of digital phenomena in Africa as its point of departure. Like the exhibitions, workshops, and events that took place in Senegal and South Africa as part of the project, the contributions now to be seen at the ZKM are by no means confined to describing digital transformations. Many of the works featured in this show engage with African histories, practices, and conditions to glean inspiration for emancipated digital futures that will withstand market-oriented interests and post-colonial hegemonies. Starting from artists’ positions which have developed in various countries on the African continent and in the African diaspora, the works featured in the exhibition articulate the necessity for more diverse, richer global digital imaginaries.
