Switch Metals Plc (AIM:SWT) CEO Karl Akueson talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's listing on London's AIM market and its focus on developing tantalum projects in Côte d'Ivoire. Akueson explained that Switch Metals, a private company he founded, was acquired through a reverse takeover by Oneiro Energy. The company's flagship Issia project hosts tantalum mineralisation, including occurrences of coltan at surface. According to Akueson, this provides an opportunity for near-term production from shallow deposits, with the company aiming to reach output within the next two years. He described tantalum as “a very strategic technology metal… in our mobile phones, laptops, plasma TV, everything we use daily,” highlighting its importance and rarity. Akueson emphasised that 60% of the global supply currently comes from the DRC and Rwanda, and Switch Metals aims to become a significant alternative source. Discussing the decision to list in the UK, Akueson pointed to his personal background and the UK's long-standing understanding of African production. The £2 million fundraise will support resource definition work at Issia, with plans to quickly define a resource and develop economic parameters to demonstrate value. “Tantalum is probably one of the most critical [metals], and a metal that is unique,” Akueson noted. Namibia is the best jurisdiction in Africa in which to mine, Andrada Mining CEO Anthony Viljoen told the Junior Indaba on Tuesday. London Aim-listed tin, tantalum and now lithium mining company recalled how it had looked across African jurisdictions when initially pursuing tin-mining opportunities and had found Namibia to be a cut above. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) “Namibia is easy stock. I'm a miner not a politician, but I can tell you that Namibia's a very happy place for our money. I can't say enough good things about being invested in Namibia and Namibia's geology is absolutely fascinating, the Erongo region in particular,” Viljoen told the indaba, chaired by mining luminary Bernard Swanepoel. Erongo is one of the 14 regions of Namibia. Its capital, Swakopmund, is named after Mount Erongo, a well-known landmark in Namibia and in this area. Erongo contains the municipalities of Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Henties Bay and Omaruru, as well as the towns Arandis, Karibib and Usakos. “You've got these pegmatite belts, which are not uncommon. But these pegmatite belts are quite unique in Namibia in that they run for hundreds of kilometres, east and west, and they swarm all the way up and down the coast,” Viljoen told the indaba covered by Mining Weekly. Usually pegmatite belts pinch out after a couple of hundred metres to a kilometre. “But Namibia's are just incredibly long and incredibly thick, hundreds of metres thick. When we picked up the licences, we picked up the old licence areas because there was a lot of geological data and the biggest of those old mining areas was the old Uis tin mine, that was once an Iscor asset.” Iscor was formerly South Africa's State-owned steelmaking enterprise that was unbundled and sold. There was a huge amount of data that allowed Andrada, formerly AfriTin, to get stuck in. What the old-timers would do is they would follow the pegmatite belts, find where they outcropped and open a pit. As they mined over 12 historic pits, Andrada had the benefit of that historic reserve. It did a confirmatory drilling programme concurrent with developing the plant and at the biggest of the historic pits, it did down dip extensions, to find that the orebody was 70% bigger that had been historically declared. The company also tested for a variety of different elements that are typically within pegmatite and what it found that associated with one of the biggest tin deposits by inventory size is also one of the biggest lithium deposits. It still has another 900 holes to confirm, which were displayed on a satellite image. “Where this becomes just so fantastically huge for us is that all those orange marks on the satellite image are pegmatite. We've got another 180 outcropping pegmatites within our licence area. The extent of our mineralisation is huge,” said Viljoen. Andrada has gone into production on a shoestring with the help of South African engineers and has embarked on an expansion project to increase capacity and become a polymetallic producer of lithium, tin, and tantalum. “But by far amongst everything we're doing, lithium is really taking centre stage,” said Viljoen. Steps are now being taken to sell the lithium concentrate being produced into industrial and chemical markets.
Gadget Recycler-Ape Lover. This is how Eric Ronay signs off on all his emails. From his warehouse in Louisville, Kentucky, Eric works diligently to not only save gorillas and their habitats, but also to save our precious environment while enacting lasting culture change. Eric, whose vision is clearly seen through the work that Eco-Cell does, wants to empower people, especially teenagers and young adults, to demand sustainable changes within the technology world.'What we do is a labour of love - I want to see a different kind of consumption culture.'In an average cell phone, there are several rare minerals. Coltan, for instance, is a mineral that makes tantalum. Tantalum is what allows cell phones and many other handheld electronics to hold a charge. 80% of the world's coltan is in the Democratic Republic of Congo which is also home to endangered gorillas. Mining of coltan (and other minerals) disrupts and destroys their habitats. 'Everybody's got these old cell phones, nobody knows what to do with them, they don't know what's in them, they don't know they affect wildlife.'To mitigate this, Eric started Eco-Cell in 2003. Eco-Cell recycles, reuses, and resells cell phones and other electronics. Since its inception, Eco-Cell has safely recycled nearly one million cell phones and raised close to one million dollars for gorilla conservation.Eric Ronay is a gorilla champion. He has made it his mission to save gorillas and raise awareness of their dire need for protection and increased conservation efforts. He does this by educating children and teenagers about cell phones and other electronics. He inspires them to contact technology companies and demand “gorilla-safe” technologies. His hope is that, with his education and partnerships with zoos and aquariums, electronics will be kept longer and longer, diminishing the need for increased mining. Eric wants everyone to realize that they do not have to trade in their phone every year for the newest version. Eric is striving for sustainable technology which will positively impact not only the gorillas, but the planet as well.Episode description by Maegan Leavendusky - Programs Co-ordinator for GLOBIOClick HERE to visit Eco-Cell's website. Tantalum is a transition metal on the periodic table. Sat between Hafnium and Tungsten, it has the atomic number of 73. First discovered in 1802 by A.G. Ekeberg in Sweden, Tantalum was named after the Greek mythological character, Tantalos. Tantalos was punished by being submerged in water, but unable to drink. This resonates with Tantalum, due to its almost invulnerability to acids. Tantalum is chemically so similar to Niobium, that until 1844, they were considered to be the same chemical element. In their raw state, Tantalum and Niobium are usually found together.Although Tantalum is not the most well-known metal, it's used in almost all modern electrical devices; mobile phones, computers and televisions. So, whether you realise it or not, most people will have several belongings containing Tantalum. Moral to the Story: "The antidote to injustice is progress." -- Stacey Abrams Let's Get Educated: Learn about City of Joy Donate to City of Joy Learn about conflict minerals Do your electronics brands use a conflict free supply chain? What can you do? Watch the movie, donate, tell others that this is still happening, find out if your phone and electronics companies are using conflict minerals. If they are, let them know you want no part of their products. Since the first car sensor was created in 1968, vehicles have become exponentially more electronic and software-driven. In fact, some even have hundreds of sensors generating gigabits of data each day. In their vision of building a marketplace for connected car services and the monetization of cars, the team at Tantalum is taking advantage of all this data. For example, the ability to collect data about the way people drive (whether they're speeding, obeying the traffic rules, etc.) will have a big impact on their risk profile, which in turn could lower their insurance premium rates. Another use case is voice recognition for parking experiences, whereby saying the demand, “Park my car” uses location-based data and payment information already embedded in the app to create a seamless and simple experience all around. Other use cases include roadside assistance, improved fuel experiences, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and an automated 911 feature. Tune in to hear Ozgur Tohumcu, the CEO of Tantalum, discuss all of these exciting use cases and more, and visit tantalumcorporation.com.

Is coltan - the notorious conflict mineral from which these two metals are derived - still being smuggled from DR Congo into Rwanda, to evade taxes and sourcing controls? Laurence Knight investigates the hi-tech roles to which these two chemical elements are put in gadgets and telecommunications. He also discusses the bloody history behind the mining of their ore in the heart of Africa with Sophia Pickles of human rights organisation Global Witness. Harkening out of the United State's Pacific Northwest in the early 1990s, Bikini Kill and Bratmobile made a big enough splash that their names and songs are still recognized by many rock fans. And those of us who do recognize these bands tend to link them to a larger artistic and musical genre known as Riot Grrrl. In Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution (Harper Perennial, 2010), Sara Marcus traces the first five explosive years of Riot Grrrl, 1989-1994. She convincingly shows that although some very cool music was at its core, the movement went far beyond the bands, and far beyond Olympia, WA. Marcus follows the members of Bikini Kill and Bratmobile as they travel to Washington, D.C. forming girls-only collectives, participating in nationally organized political demonstrations, writing stridently feminist fanzines, and playing gigs to audiences of outcast girls who found there was indeed a supportive place for them to express themselves freely. By '93 the movement was international with Riot Grrrl chapters in Minneapolis, Oklahoma, New York City, Vancouver, B.C., and London to name just a few. Toward the end of the book's timeframe, Riot Grrrl was weakened by forces that befall many social movements: the mainstream press and music industry co-opted some of its important leaders and images, infighting among members kept some chapters from realizing their goals, and strident localism kept geographically disparate branches from forming lasting network ties. All-in-all, however, Marcus convincingly shows Riot Grrrl to have been an important wave of an ongoing feminist movement in which young women and girls redefined sex, gender, and sexuality as their own. Sara Marcus writes about music, books, and politics for numerous publications, including Bookforum, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Artforum.com, Slate, Salon, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Time Out New York, The Forward, and Heeb magazine, where she was politics editor for five years; her poetry has appeared in Death, Encyclopedia, EOAGH, Tantalum, and The Art of Touring. She has taught at girls' rock camps in Portland and New York, has played drums and keyboards in a long string of relatively short-lived bands, and continues to instigate communal, de-skilled music making whenever possible. Girlchild (Farrar, Straus & Giroux) Debut novelist Tupelo Hassman will read and sign her novel Girlchild, which has already garnered rave reviews! "This amazing debut spills over with love, but is still absolutely unflinching and real. That is no easy combo to pull off, and Tupelo Hassman does it repeatedly with precision and grace. Rory D. is ebulliently alive on the page; she's really that kind of fresh new voice people talk about, leaving us with a completely memorable character." --Aimee Bender, author of The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake "I'm smitten by Tupelo Hassman's debut. The beauty of this story is how it plays: great turns in language, humor that points to sadness, and a structure that is messy and tidy all at the same time. Girlchild is overwhelming in an engaging and beautiful way.” —Salvador Plascencia, author of The People of Paper "If I were back on the staff of my high school yearbook I would vote Tupelo Hassman and her book Most Likely to Go Viral on Goodreads and Most Likely to Succeed in the Eyes of Critics." --Nicole Lamy, Boston Globe Tupelo Hassman graduated from Columbia's MFA program. Her writing has been published in Paper Street Press, The Portland Review Literary Journal, Tantalum, We Still Like, ZYZZYVA, and by 100WordStory.org and FiveChapters.com. Tupelo is a contributing author to Heliography, Invisible City Audio Tours' first tour and is curating its fourth tour, The Landmark Revelation Society. Tupelo will be keeping a video journal of girlchild's book tour for the short documentary Hardbound: A Novel's Life on the Road. THIS EVENT WAS RECORDED LIVE AT SKYLIGHT BOOKS MARCH 6, 2012.
