Sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn , Reynolds Landscaping & Lawncare, Everest Counseling (Farmington, Mo)Helmet, the iconic alternative metal band that emerged from New York City in the late 1980s, stands as a testament to the power of artistic innovation within the realm of heavy music. Founded by frontman and guitarist Page Hamilton, Helmet has left an indelible mark on the landscape of rock and metal with their unique blend of raw aggression, intricate songwriting, and thought-provoking lyrics. The band's journey began in 1989 when they released their debut album, "Strap It On," on the independent label Amphetamine Reptile Records. This album, marked by its deceptively simple yet highly effective riffing, immediately caught the attention of fans and critics alike. Page Hamilton's fractured soloing style and distinct vocal delivery set Helmet apart from the burgeoning alternative music scene, where they stood as a harbinger of a new era in heavy music.Helmet's breakthrough came with their second album, "Meantime," released in 1992 on Interscope Records. This album showcased Hamilton's songwriting prowess and cemented the band's status as a heavy-hitting force in the industry. Tracks like "Unsung" and "In the Meantime" became anthems for a generation, and the album itself achieved Gold certification, signifying its enduring impact. What sets Helmet apart from many of their peers is their dedication to musical intricacy and innovation. Page Hamilton, a trained jazz guitarist with a background in avant-garde music, brought a level of sophistication to their heavy sound that was unparalleled. The band's use of drop-D tuning, unconventional time signatures, and dissonant chords created a sonic landscape that challenged the conventions of heavy music. Songs like "Wilma's Rainbow" and "Rollo" exemplify this complexity, offering listeners a glimpse into the band's commitment to pushing the boundaries of their genre. After releasing two more albums, "Betty" in 1994 and "Aftertaste" in 1997, the original lineup of Helmet disbanded in 1998. However, Page Hamilton's artistic journey was far from over. He continued to explore various musical avenues, collaborating with artists like David Bowie, Caspar Brötzmann, and Wire, among others. This period of exploration allowed him to expand his sonic palette and further solidify his status as a musical innovator. In 2004, Hamilton reformed Helmet with an all-new lineup, releasing several albums, including "Size Matters" (2004), "Monochrome" (2006), "Seeing Eye Dog" (2010), and "Dead To The World" (2016). These albums demonstrated that Helmet's spirit of innovation and uncompromising intensity remained intact, even with a new lineup. In 2023, Helmet announced the release of their ninth studio album, "Left," set to be released on November 10th on earMUSIC. This announcement was accompanied by the "Look Left Tour," taking the band through various regions of North America. It marked their first tour since the pandemic, and fans eagerly anticipated hearing new material from this legendary band.Helmet's journey through the realms of heavy music and artistic innovation has been nothing short of remarkable. Page Hamilton's unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging conventions has led to the creation of music that transcends genres and continues to captivate audiences. Helmet's legacy as pioneers of alternative metal is secure, and their enduring influence on heavy music is a testament to the enduring power of artistic innovation. All equipment used in the making of this video:Shure Sm7b https://amzn.to/3uAMzMAShure Sm58 https://amzn.to/3xlAj4pBoom Arm Desktop Mic Stand https://amzn.to/3rlZtvGMixcast 4 Audio Mixer https:/This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 289 features an interview with Tom Hazelmyer. It would be impossible to overstate the impact that Tom Hazelmyer has had on heavy music. As the head of Amphetamine Reptile Records, he coined the term "noise rock" and provided a launchpad for artists like Helmet, Unsane, and Today Is The Day - bands who went on to shape underground punk and metal. I spoke with Tom about launching AmRep from his military barracks, and how he handled the major label bidding wars of the Nineties. We also discussed his feelings about streaming services, and what the purpose of a record label is in the current age. My thanks again to Tom for speaking with me, and to you for listening. YOU'RE GONNA LISTEN TO THE BASS PLAYER. The Spindle is back for the new year, and this week on the show Marc and John drop the needle on the Melvins' single "Night Goat" b/w "Adolescent Wet Dream." Released in 1992 by Amphetamine Reptile Records, this 7" exemplifies the odd sophistication of the Melvins, reveling in extreme volume, absurdist poetry, and overblown attitude.  The single's A-side, "Night Goat," would go on to become one of the band's signature songs; it was re-recorded for the band's major label debut Houdini and is a longstanding staple of the band's raucous live shows. The B-side is curious, too: the original comes from garage punk band Pussy Galore, whose leader Jon Spencer would go on to form The Blues Explosion. Is it grunge? Is it doom? Is it alternative? Who cares: it's Melvins. Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. More podcasts and videos at WASTOIDS.com | Follow us on Instagram and YouTube.

[Photo Credit: Buzz Osborne] Boss Hog. Unsane. Helmet. The Melvins. Yes, musically these are very diverse bands. But as diverse as they are, or as they might be seen nowadays, there is something that connects them all: They all released on the legendary Amphetamine Reptile Records label once and that really meant and means something as the label from Minneapolis has played a hand in many careers. Therefore we are really happy to talk to Tom Hazelmyer, the founder of AmRep Back in the day it seemed like AmRep was the "biggest indie" label on the planet, with maybe the best "nose" for great bands and when you released an EP or an album even through Tom's label, you could be sure that people would notice your band. But whether this notion of the biggest label on the label also co-related in a huge number of people working there - well, if you want to know that and much more - then you should watch this video with Tom in which we talk a lot about AmRep's history and "business model", about the fact that Tom witnessed the explosion of an alternative scene twice and even more about the relationship between AmRep and The Melvins, whose King Buzzo also provided us with the wonderful picture of Tom. Enjoy all you VoS-aficionados out there and tell us - which label shall we shed some light on next?!

Helmet: Recorded  & mixed by Branko Cosic Recorded at the Brightside, Brisbane, 30th April 2017 The original Helmet line up, consisting of Page Hamilton on guitar and vocals, Brisbane-born Peter Mengede on guitar, Henry Bogdan on bass and John Stainer on drums, formed in 1989 in New York City. Quickly signing to Amphetamine Reptile Records, they release their debut album Strap It On the year after. This led the band to be signed by Interscope Records in early 1992, with label mates including Primus, Nine Inch Nails, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Their first Interscope release Meantime   (1992) was certified gold and remains Helmets biggest commercial success to date. Betty (1994) soon followed, bringing the band to our shores to play the now legendary Livid Festival 1994 line up featuring Beastie Boys, Superchunk, Frank Black and Tumbleweed. A falling out between Hamilton and Mengede in 1993 meant Peter didn’t make the trip out, but returned to reside in Brisbane in later years. This would be the first of many line up changes for the band, with Hamilton remaining the only constant member. Once touring Aftertaste over 1997-98, Helmet disbanded before reforming again in 2004 to release Size Matters. They have released a total of 8 studios albums and remain one of the most influential bands of the alternative rock movement. In 2017, Helmet returned to Brisbane for the first time since 2011, as part of their ‘Betty’ retrospective tour. This set features selections from the album as well as tracks from their latest LP Dead To The World and fan favourites from their lengthy back catalogue. Spliced in throughout the set is an interview conducted by Branko Cosic with founding member Page Hamilton.
