This month we have a deeply interesting conversation with social anthropologist, Dr. Khalil 'Avi' Betz-Heinemann, who is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the project Animal Crosslocations, which is resourced through the Resilient and Just Systems (RESET) Network at University of Helsinki. We talked about his new project, “Mosquito Crosslocations and Participatory Evaluations of Mosquito Interventions,” and the trajectory that led him to be interested in these topics. In this conversation we think through the complex web of relationships inherent to multispecies interactions. In particular, he highlighted some of the compelling reasons why we need to shift some of our narratives related to the myriad beings we humans characterize as “pests”. Pests is in quotes because using this language casually brings its own sometimes (often) misguided perceptions and assumptions about the role the being in question plays within the wider web of life. The boys on The TNT Talk Show discuss a somewhat troubling topic about just how far should human & animal crossbreed experiments go?Science fiction writers often portray scientists accidentally creating monsters when playing God with human and animal crossbreed experiments. Of course, the creation of these hideous creatures always means the demise of everyone else.Whilst these fiction writers purposely elicit an emotional response to this type of story to gain sales for their particular stories, scientists in the "real" world justify these sorts of experiments as benefitting humankind.  Many scientists insist that doing these experiments will lead to a better understanding of human biology, resulting in remedies for currently incurable diseases.What do you think? Um grupo de defensores de animais lança na França uma campanha para endurecer o combate à zoofilia, uma prática tabu que costumava se restringir a regiões isoladas, mas explodiu com a internet. O ato sexual com animais é enquadrado no Código Penal do país, porém raros são os casos que chegam a julgamento. Outros países europeus, como Portugal, Alemanha e Suécia, também criminalizam a exploração sexual de animais – que pode o levar à morte. “Há uma incompatibilidade anatômica, evidentemente. Dependendo do caso, o animal pode morrer ou ter lesões gravíssimas internas”, explica a veterinária Marjolaine Baron, autora de uma tese sobre o tema. “As estimativas mostram que a metade dos casos de zoofilia incluem sadismo, ou seja, a tortura ou a morte do animal no momento da prática de zoofilia.” Um estudo aprofundado realizado pela organização Animal Cross indica que os animais que mais são forçados a satisfazer pulsões sexuais de humanos são, na ordem, o cachorro, o jumento, a cadela e o cavalo, mas porcos, bezerros, cabras e até gatos também estão na lista. A pesquisa partiu do alerta de uma militante da causa animal, que analisou durante três anos o comportamento de praticantes na internet. Em muitos casos, os zoófilos reivindicam um “verdadeiro amor” pelos animais e falam em relação sexual “consentida” – uma explicação insana, na opinião de Benoit Thomé, presidente da associação. “Vai além de maus-tratos: é exploração sexual dos animais”, resume o defensor. “Na base da pirâmide que sustenta a zoofilia, temos a audiência considerável de sites que exibem vídeos disso. Só na França, há pelo menos 1,5 milhão de filmes assistidos pelos internautas franceses por mês, em sites especializados – e não estamos nem contando os sites pornográficos que incluem material de zoofilia.” Internet disseminou a prática Antigamente restritas a zonas rurais e isoladas, agora as relações sexuais com animais se disseminaram via internet. Em fóruns especializados, zoófilos trocam informações sobre a prática e pessoas sem experiência pesquisam sobre como realizar uma fantasia. A Animal Cross indica que pelo menos 10 mil pessoas consultam e participam desses sites na França. Nas conversas, a preocupação com a saúde dos animais é inexistente, indica Thomé. “Não se tratam de pessoas que não tem uma vida sexual. É o contrário: são pessoas extremamente ativas e estão em busca de novas aventuras sexuais. Para elas, os animais são o próximo passo”, explica. “Não se trata de ser homossexual, bissexual ou outra coisa, mas sim de conversar com outras pessoas e uma perguntar para a outra: você já tentou com animais?” Prisão e multa de € 30 mil Na França, o crime de zoofilia é previsto desde 2004, passível de dois anos de prisão e uma multa de € 30 mil. No entanto, na maioria das vezes, os casos nunca chegarão aos tribunais: apenas “algumas dezenas” de julgamentos são realizados no país a cada ano. As denúncias são raras e a investigação, difícil, uma vez que a vítima não se comunica. “Não apenas o assunto é tabu e ninguém fala a respeito, mas com frequência a prática não deixa lesões nos animais. O diagnóstico também é difícil porque os veterinários não são formados para pensar nesse aspecto. É preciso analisar o comportamento do dono e a interação entre os dois”, comenta a veterinária Marjolaine Baron. “Nos casos mais flagrantes, pode haver utilização de objetos, que deixam traços no ânus ou na vagina. Pode ter também outros tipos de lesões pelo corpo, como hematomas, afinal muitos animais se debatem.” Provar o crime é ainda mais complexo. Declarações pela internet ou fotos cuja identidade levanta dúvidas não podem constituir um delito. A campanha francesa defende que, em casos suspeitos, seja realizado um procedimento semelhante ao aplicado em estupros ou abusos de menores: exames no suspeito e no animal, recolhimento de equipamentos digitais, combate à divulgação de imagens e informações na internet e uma maior proteção das crianças e adolescentes ao conteúdo zoófilo. “É um verdadeiro problema não só para os animais, mas para a proteção dos menores. Uma criança de 8 ou 10 anos ter acesso a esse tipo de vídeo é dramático para a construção da sua sexualidade: a imagem que ele terá da sexualidade, do outro, da mulher e dos animais, pode ser destruída”, alerta Thomé. A organização também pede que qualquer tipo de relação sexual com animais seja criminalizada, e não apenas quando eles sofrem penetração, como é hoje. No Brasil, a prática ainda não é enquadrada. Um projeto de lei sobre o tema repousa na Câmara dos Deputados desde 2017.
