There's this idea floating around that unless you're all-in on your photography business—fully booked, full-time, aiming for six figures and beyond—what you're doing doesn't really count. But over the years, I've worked with countless photographers who are intentionally building part-time businesses, whether that's because they're just getting started, running a household, or working another job that they can't or don't want to give up. And in many cases, those "limitations" lead to more clarity, more intention, and a stronger business. In today's episode, I'm sharing what I've learned from supporting photographers who are growing their businesses in the margins - starting with why that "constraint" might just turn out to be your biggest strength. We'll talk about how to build your business on purpose so you can make the most of your time and energy, no matter how limited it might feel.Resources: New to the podcast? Most photographers build their businesses around one signature offer—and that's a great place to start. But if that's the only offer on your menu, your business may be more fragile than you think. In today's episode, I'm breaking down the three types of offers every photography business should have: your core offer (aka your bread and butter), an entry offer (for those not quite ready to go all-in), and an expansion offer (for the people who already love you and want more). When these three work together, you create a flexible, sustainable system that supports both your income and your clients. If you've been stuck in a one-offer cycle, this episode will help you expand your offer suite in a way that's aligned, strategic, and surprisingly simple.Resources: New to the podcast? In this third episode of the Sustainability Series, I'm diving into one of the biggest time and energy drains for photographers: marketing. Let's face it—hunting for clients can feel like an endless Easter egg hunt. But what if, instead of searching for golden eggs, you focused on finding a golden goose? In this episode, I share how I created a portrait membership that became my golden goose—a predictable, recurring revenue stream that reduced my marketing workload and made my business more sustainable. Whether it's memberships, school portraits, or partnerships, the goal is to build systems that decrease your reliance on constant client-hunting and give you more time to focus on what matters most.If you're ready to spend less time chasing clients and more time building a business that supports your life, this episode will give you the inspiration and strategies to get started.Resources: Listen to the Simple Sales Limited Series Podcast where Annemie teaches the 6 steps to running a profitable, sustainable photography business you love. In the second episode of my Sustainability Series, I'm sharing how a major “lifequake” forced me to rethink everything about my business. Back in 2017, I hit a breaking point—I was working 50-60 hours a week, juggling too many types of jobs, and still not making enough to feel secure. I knew something had to change. That's when I created what's now known as the Simple Sales System. By streamlining my workflow and cutting out anything unnecessary, I was able to make more money in less time, all while delivering a better experience for my clients. In this episode, I walk you through how I did it, how Parkinson's Law (the idea that work expands to fill the time you give it) was holding me back, and why adding creative constraints was the key to my success. If you're feeling like your business is running you instead of the other way around, this episode will show you how to take back control, free up your time, and create a more sustainable path forward.Link:Learn more about The Simple Sales System Resources: Listen to the Simple Sales Limited Series Podcast where Annemie teaches the 6 steps to running a profitable, sustainable photography business you love. It's a tricky line to walk. For years, I offered some baseline privacy to my clients, and anyone who required more could pay an extra fee. But recently, I realized this approach no longer felt right to me, so I went back to the drawing board and came up with a new privacy plan that puts the control firmly in my clients' hands. I used to think I had a "black thumb" when it came to gardening, but back in 2020 when I had time to pay attention to my yard for the first time ever, I was surprised to discover that I had a bit more of a knack for it than I realized! Maybe that's less surprising now that I look back and see all the parallels between growing a garden and running a thriving business. Many of the skills I've learned in my business - things like patience, perseverance, and being willing to experiment and adapt - are the same skills you need to be a successful gardener. But one of the biggest lessons I've learned - both in business and in my back yard - is the value of having "perennials"; those repeat clients that come back year after year through a membership program. Instead of relying solely on one-time "annual" clients, a membership gives you that steady, predictable revenue stream, just like perennial plants that come back year after year and make your garden look beautiful with much less work. They take some upfront work to set up, but it can pay off big time in the long run.So today I want to talk about how you can start thinking about your business like a garden, and consider how you can plant the seeds for more sustainable growth.Links:Learn how to set up a membership program in your business with Revenue on RepeatResources: Listen to the Simple Sales Limited Series Podcast where Annemie teaches the 6 steps to running a profitable, sustainable photography business you love. There's a lot of talk in the photo community these days about inquiries being down, which inevitably leads to talk (and a whole lot of insecurity) about pricing. The truth is, pricing may be a factor in the decreased inquiry equation... but it's only one factor. And the truth is that changing your prices without taking the time to evaluate the broader equation may do more harm than good.If you've been considering a shift in your prices (or any other area of your business), today's episode is for you. I'm covering the 5 parts of the business equation, especially when there are fewer jobs to go around.Link:Take the Business Alignment Quiz Looking to make the most of the busy season this year?
