Hey friend, welcome back to Business Builders! Today, I'm diving into one of the most overlooked (but crazy important) pieces of running a small business: culture. I'm sharing what I've learned from years of building and rebuilding teams—because here's the thing—every business has a culture. The real question is: are you shaping it with purpose, or letting it form on its own? I'll walk you through how to lead intentionally, live out your values, and build a business people want to be part of.Key topics covered:Why every business has culture—even if you're a team of oneHow to stop letting chaos set the tone and start leading with calm, grounded intentionThe difference between a list of values and a lived-out culture (hint: one's not a poster on the wall!)How to define core values that actually matter—and model them dailyWhat to do when culture drifts and how to reset without shameIf you've ever said, “I just wish my team thought more like me,” this episode is your roadmap. Let's build something that feels like us, together.ChallengeDefine your core values – Choose the values that truly matter to your business (not just fluffy words). Pick the ones that will actively shape your culture.Pick one value to focus on – Choose just one that you want your business to be known for.Write a sentence that describes what that value looks like in action – Make it clear and tangible.Start noticing where that value is already showing up – In your actions, your team's actions, and how you serve your clients.Reinforce it – Call it out when you see it, celebrate it, and use it to guide your decisions and feedback.Mentioned in this episode: If you are running a business in Canada and you need help with all the things accounting related, but more importantly understanding the numbers I invite you to check out https://thriveaccounting.co/Staci's Links:Instagram. In this episode, I'm opening up in a whole new way. I talk about what's been holding me back, the fear of being seen fully, and the parts of my journey I've kept quiet—out of fear, perfectionism, and honestly... trying to keep it all looking “together.”This marks a shift for me and for this podcast. I'm not here to perform or preach. I'm here to be real, human, and messy. And my hope is that it gives you permission to do the same. What You'll Learn in This Episode:Why this episode is a turning point for meThe difference between a true story and a real oneHow fear of judgment and being seen has shaped my voiceMy experience with people-pleasing, masking, and staying smallWhat I'm learning about imposter syndrome and telling the truth anywayAn invitation to walk this next chapter with me—fully, honestly, and soul poweredI didn't plan to share all of this—but I'm trusting it's exactly what needed to come through. The term ‘parasocial relationship' was coined in the 1950s by American sociologists Donald Horton and Richard Wohl to describe how people connected with TV personalities at the time. Today, parasocial relationships have expanded to include celebrities, influencers, athletes – even podcast hosts! Social media in particular has taken parasocial relationships to a new level; it blows my mind how much I know about some people I've never met. In this episode, I talk all about the parasocial phenomenon: the positive and negative attributes to parasocial relationships, why we reach for them, and how they're impacting our real (two-sided) connections.Parasocial relationships aren't inherently good or bad. They're just part of modern reality. They're not going anywhere. So instead of judging them, maybe it's time we get intentional about them. How can we use parasocial connections as a bridge to community rather than replacement for it?In this episode you'll hear about:Stats to consider: 51 percent of Americans have parasocial relationships but only 16 percent actually acknowledge they're in oneHow social media changed parasocial relationships, giving us more behind-the-scene access and real-time updates about the people we followThe emotional energy we invest in parasocial relationships and how they can impact real-life friendships, causing relationship distortionHow parasocial relationships can fill emotional needs, reduce stigma, provide behavioral modeling, and form communities in marginalized groupsResources & LinksListen to Episode 104 with Sharon Walters about how to get less passive and more active on podcasts and social media; Episode 91, about how to stop dreading parties and take charge of your guest experience; Episode 38 and Episode 39, about third places; and Episode 127, which is about calling your friends.Like what you hear? [03:25] Address Your Fear of Death Pain is inevitable and I wanna say that with reverence because we all go through loss, we all go through grief, It's just part of the baked-in human experience that our creator designed, right? Otherwise, it wouldn't be here. So let's get right to the question because I want to give some practical if anybody else is experiencing this. Okay, Mar, let's get into our question. Okay, our question today is: "I've recently been having a terrible fear of dying. I'm not sure where it's coming from, or why, because I haven't always felt this way. Has anyone else felt this way?" Bomb drop. This is from episode 535, Aaron Abke | The Law of One + How to Live in Love's Alignment. And I wanna start my share and my delivery of the wisdom believe will actually be practical for you with a quote from Rumi. Rumi says, I learned that every mortal will taste death, but only some will taste life. Man, I just love Rumi. When I say Rumi's quotes, it's like the hair on my arm stands up because it's so true, y'all. There are many men and women that just exist. They don't actually ever live. They are controlled by their fears. They allow their default mode network to search for danger on a constant. They allow their reticular activating system to gather evidence that they are in threat, constant. And I have personal experience with this, right? Like I am still at 44 healing and re-regulating my nervous system to be in peace and in homeostasis and out of hypervigilance. It's something that I'm just aware of, right? That's a gift that I've been given. So the gift that we're all given at birth, I mean, just think about this, think about this. Your mother carried you for 8 to 9 months. She carried you in her womb. Think of the sacrifice and the sacredness and the love that you were given before you exited her womb and came into the world and took your first breath. The beauty and the gift and the power in that is so profound, it's so profound. Just sit with that for a moment. So Lauren, when you're experiencing this fear of dying, encapsulated in every question, every problem is the solution, right? So if you have a fear of dying, what is the opposite of dying? The opposite of dying is living, truly living. I learned that every mortal will taste death, but only some will taste life, Rumi says. So if all of us will die, memento mori, all of us will die. Remember that you will die. But only some of us will taste life. Then what is the antidote to the poison of fear of death? Because I really think it's a poison, right, because when you're in fear of dying, what happens is on an energetic level, you start blocking the ways in which you express yourself, which you feel safe, which you feel the opposite of depression is expression, which you feel expressed. So if we consciously know, and this is why healing is mainly unconscious, I feel like most healing is like 90 plus percent unconscious somatic, it lives in the body. Then what is it in your life that has happened that was neutral, that you tied a meaning to, that you made a meaning of this event, Lauren, this event making you feel like you were going to die. Just go back in your nervous system. And this isn't a therapy session, I'm not a psychologist, but I've done and played around in this world of somatics and healing enough to know that my own healing pathway is your pathway in some way. So put your hand on your heart, put your hand on your stomach, take 10 deep breaths. And at the end of those deep breaths, just ask yourself this one powerful question. If I'm experiencing this fear of death, if I'm experiencing this fear in my body, where does it live, number one? Where is it? Is it in your throat? Is it in your heart? Is it in your stomach? Is it in your sexual organs? Is it in your perineum? Which of the chakras does it exist in? Because that's the starting place, right?
