The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
Samantha Wood Philadelphia Eagles Director of Digital and Social Media joins host Brian Clapp on the Work in Sports Podcast.Hi everybody, I'm Brian Clapp VP of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkinSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast…Everyone wants to work in sports social media. Ok, that's hyperbolic, it isn't everyone, but it seems pretty darn close. No one, or at least very few people, remark that they want to work in sports sales, despite it having a really high career ceiling, and money making potential. Very few share their love and desire to work in facility management, or consumer goods, despite the enormous opportunities at sports facilities around the globe and massive consumer brands churing out shoes apparal and equipment and monumental clips.Nope, it seems most of you have sold your soul to Twitter. I'll admit, I'll see a tweet from friend of the show Katie Gillen from Atlanta FC when she shares a cool graphic, or behind the scenes video, or incredible photo, or funny comment related to the team… and think to myself, she's got a pretty awesome job.Or I notice today's guest Samantha Wood, Director of Digital and Social Media with the Philadelphia Eagles do the same, and there may be a tinge of creative jealousy. As a creator myself, you see people put in positions to be creative and thrive… and sure, I can absolutely see the excitement behind working in social media for a team or organization.BUT - I don't want to dampen the dream, but I want to be very clear with all of you. I believe wholeheartedly in settingreasonbale expectations. Telling people the truth about the industry and it's roles…Social Media in sports is not just a content party.I lifted this directly from a job posting for a social media coordinator from our site WorkinSports.com - where if you hadn't noticed, there ar 14,482 active jobs right now on our site… so for all you people struggling to get started in the industry… we have the jobs!Anyway, I lifted these details from one of jobs currently active on our site for a social media coordinator. Track & analyze social media insights, trends and new platforms.Execute paid social media campaigns and budgets.Assist with website content via the content management system including but not limited to events, weekly promotions, photo galleries, general info (contact info, hours, FAQ, inquiry forms), news articles, etc.Help with database collection through contests, promotions, campaigns and events.Ability to learn and create visually appealing graphic designs using Canva. Assist with coordination and management of photography and videography assets.Plan, design and manage the outbound emails including database management and content.Work with sponsors on activations and implementation of their contracts.Work with operations to execute Game Day promotions, sponsorship implementation and in game program elementsLet's pull out some key skills there -- Tracking and analysing data. Budgeting. Executing paid campaigns. Database management. Creating graphics on Canva. Managing content assets. Activation. Contracts. Game Day promotions. Now a coordinator is an entry level role, imagine how this ramps up as you become a director! As I said, Sports social media isn't just a content playground, it's a function of the business operations of the team or organization, and you need to have more than just the ability to tweet to get these jobs.No one better to teach you that, than todays guest Samantha Wood - Director of Digital and Social platforms with the Philadelphia Eagles!Listen in to this great episode of the Work in Sports podcast to hear Samantha Wood discuss her role and challenges.
International break doesn't mean the fun has to stop, and this week, for the third week in a row, the Wankers go all-latin pod and are joined by the Cooligans! Have you ever wondered if Lukaku can drop fire bars? Wonder no more (he can). Delle Alli is designing fashion lines, Dembele is addicted to fortnite, Maradona is answering the phone during a game he's managing, and Pulisic to Chelsea? It's all too much to bear. Andrea finally begins to comprehend the Nations League just in time for it to go on hiatus, and everybody is sick and tired of the US Soccer federation and their hijinks. Enjoy the highly debated topic of how to spell "toots" or "tuts" (leave your spelling in the reviews section). And as always Full Kitties, you've got subs if you need 'em. @fullkitwankerspodcast (IG), @fkwpod (Twitter), fullkitwankerspodcast@gmail.com
The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
Careers in sports social media require skills outside of content creation, it takes strategic thinking, research, planning and more. Katie Gillen, Atlanta United FC's Manager of Social Media and Analytics joins us on the podcast to explain. Hi everybody, I'm Brian Clapp Director of Content for WorkinSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast. There tends to be very blurry lines in the sports industry. In some industries jobs are like silo's – you work in a very specific function doing a very specific thing… do not venture over here, that is not your world. Stay in your lane, enjoy your silo. You push the paper from point A to point B…don't even make eye contact with point C.Of course I'm being a little dramatic but, I know people who have this existence…it usually requires a cubicle, just to remind you that you have to stay in your space, and not play elsewhere. In sports, the lines are a little blurrier.Sports sales is a whole lot of marketing. Marketing involves a lot of social media. Social Media involves a lot of content creation. Content creation includes a lot of graphic design. We can play this game all day long. One of my early career bosses, Sandy Malcolm, used to tell me all the time, you have to be versatile. You can't just be a good writer, you have to know how to run a camera, edit video, ask good questions and more and more and more. This formula is constantly changing. To be a scout, well now you have to know analytics… that wasn't the case 10 years ago.To be a storyteller you have to know Instagram, also not the case a decade ago.As they say, the goal posts keep moving.Careers in sports are blended….and often require both right and left brain.Take sports social media for example. You think it's a right brain career choice, all creative and abstract, spontaneous and artistic. Sure, that's part of it. But not all of it.A huge component of successful social media is in the left brain activities… like setting strategy, planning, data mining, analytics and projections. This weeks guest, Katie Gillen from Atlanta United FC – she's the manager of social media AND analytics…which to many of you may sound like an impossible combination of left and right brain, but for her, is the perfect mix of both. And Katie's daily reality points out a truth you should write on your wall or inscribe in your notebook – don't pigeonhole yourself. You can't be just one thing, you can't be just a creative type…you have to be tactical and able to get things done. You can't be just a data person, you have to be able to translate that into action and into a format your audience, whether that's a fan base or a sponsor or a group sales target…is ready and excited to consume. This interview ahead isn't just a “let's talk about how fun it is to work in social media!” Sure that's part of it, but there are challenges ahead, challenges that you need to face if you want to work with a major professional sports team in any role.In social media you must be able to complete the cycle -- from over-arching strategy, to concept, to planning, to execution, to evaluation, to adjustments, to data collection, to learning and applying, to next challenge.Any part of this cycle that you avoid, or can't complete, means you have a weakness that can be or must be filled by someone else. Wouldn't you rather be able to contribute to the whole process?Today's guest Katie Gillen sure can. As the Manager of Social Media and Analytics for Atlanta United FC, the University of Florida grad has been up to the challenge of the whole cycle, and that's one of the many reasons she's a rock star…listen in, and you'll find out the rest of the reasons real soon.Sports Social Media Questions for Katie Gillen, Atlanta United FC Manager of Social Media and Analytics1: Going through your background, before you became the social media maven with Atlanta FC, your previous roles were all connected to content and storytelling in sports… when did it become clear to you that your...
The Full Kit Wankers celebrated El Clasico by inviting notorious Real Madrid aficionado, and ex El Salvadorian national youth team member, Kenny Benitez to guest host on this week's pod. Roll your eyes as Andrea finds a way to mention Sigurdsson again, and Steven loves on Copa Libertadores. It was a big week for fixtures, the Spurs are out of Champions League (what a shock), Europa league somehow continues to be televised, and MLS "Decision Day" brought the Supporters' shield to the NY Red Bulls. Between Pogba's slow run up to take the penalty, and Wembley's wrecked post-NFL field, the Premier League was also not without drama. Weigh in with the wankers on "pay for play" and what's wrong with youth development in US Soccer. And as always, you've got subs if you need them.
The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
Does it make sense to focus on one sport and become an "expert" or to branch out and work in any sport? That is today's question that we're tackling on the Work in Sports podcastHi everybody, I'm Brian Clapp Director of Content for WorkinSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast. It's Monday, it's grey and rainy here in Pennsylvania… and I am super pumped for this week. I know, I'm not the type to say things like super pumped, because it sounds forced and inauthentic… but I am so I will. Here's why. I love booking great guests for our show. I love it. There is this sense of validation that comes from someone saying yes. And better yet, as our show grows and more and more people become connected to it, there is a huge ego boost that comes from someone saying, I love your podcast of course I will come on.You aren't supposed to admit things like ego boosts, you are supposed to have more chill than that… but come on, I'm human like all of you, I get excited and geeked up when important people in the industry know and respect what we are doing here! You get excited right? Me too. I'm no different than you are.So, why am I excited… Let me count the ways.1: I just had an awesome, and I mean awesome interview with Christopher Flynn Oakland A's Sales manager for the CORE. The CORE is their Sports Business Development Academy and it is cutting edge and super cool. I love it when an interview flows and is very natural… we crushed it.2: This week I'm interviewing –Katie Gillen, Atlanta FC's Manager of Social Media and Analytics – Atlanta FC is crushing it in fan engagement and social, but there is so much more to social than just tweeting behind the scenes photos -we're going to get into that with Katie.Kristina Wedseltoft – Indiana Pacers Community Relations coordinator – so many of you have expressed interest in community relations, so pumped to have Kristina on right as the NBA season is getting underway.Bill Guertin from Inspiration Sports Business Institute – Bill is the guy who teams hire to train their sales staff. He's worked with over 40 professional teams, he knows the skills you need, what teams want and how to break in to sports. And finally – Brian Killingsworth the Chief Marketing Officer of the Vegas Golden Knights. The Golden Knights are crushing it in Vegas, and Brian is behind so many of their great ideas. So excited for that interview. So yeah, I'm pumped up. If you have any question you want me to ask any of those guests, post them in our private facebook group! Go to the Work in Sports podcast on facebook, join the group and post your question as a new thread. I will pick the best questions, incorporate them in the interview and give you a shout out for asking it.Pretty cool right?Justin Collier:Just wanted to connect and say thank you for the work you do. I just recently found your podcast and when I did I was wondering if I needed to relocate to succeed in the sports industry. I randomly scrolled down through the episodes, and amazingly the one I stopped on was “Do I really need to relocate for a sports career?” This was a sign to me that the podcast was what I needed in my sports career. (Thanks Justin!)I am currently a seasonal Account Executive with the Tennessee Titans and as my time with the Titans comes to an end, my job search is kicking back into gear. So the one main question I have: Is it a good idea to stay in one sport so that you can master that specific industry, or is it a good idea to branch out and try multiple sports so that you can be well versed in every industry? Thanks again Brian! Justin it's a good question and I'm going to be very very assertive with my answer.Branch out. With one exception that I'll get to later. Why branch out? First lets just work through some examples. You know how I mentioned I'm interviewing Brian Killingsworth CMO of the Vegas Golden Knights later this week?Check his resume:10 years with the Tampa Bay Rays – that's baseball.3 years with the LA (then St.
These FKWs were #blessed to have Arsenal NYC's very own VP, Sean Swift, on the pod. This week's show includes recaps on Champions League, Europa League (sigh), the supporter's shield race between Atlanta FC and the New York Red Bulls, and Steven's clear obsession with the NY Cosmos. Listen to Andrea gush endlessly about Messi, continue to rag on Lamela and generally obsess over the bearded 'ssons' on Iceland's National team. The Wankers weigh in on Euro snobbery and why American soccer fans tend to choose European clubs over their own local football team. Don't worry, there's still a Mourinho soundbite. And never forget, you've got subs if you need 'em.
This week, the Full Kit Wankers cover everything soccer, starting with Champions League, Europa league, and then later American soccer, Campeones Cup (whatever that spanglish means) and Atlanta FC. They then move on to discuss the EPL and our Yanks abroad closing out with everyone's favorite recap: the female intended play, this week covering the NWSL Championship between the Portland Thorns and the NC Courage. Steven and Andrea then conclude with the "wankers weigh-in" on the topic of VAR. Happy listening wankers! And don't forget to submit your #dunndivechallenge !

Six States One Podcast - A Show About The New England Revolution
A 6-1 beating at Orlando City and home draw with Atlanta FC leaves New England on the cusp of being mathematically eliminated from the MLS playoff race. But the elusive sixth spot in the east has been difficult to lock in for the two teams the Revs are theoretically still chasing -- New York Red Bull and the Montreal Impact. New York has just one win in its last 11 matches and Montreal has lost seven of its last eight. But a potential rule infraction from FC Dallas could result in the team forfeiting its Saturday draw with Orlando City. That would mean two more big points for Orlando City and give them sole position of seventh place, with games against Columbus and Philadelphia to play -- not good new for Revs playoff dreamers. This week Ray, Jon, Matt and Alex discuss the video review screwing the Revs took in Orlando and break down the high press against Atlanta that led to several scoring opportunities that just couldn't find the back of the net. And finally, it's once more into the breach for the Huot 8000.
