A 7.0 earthquake off the coast of Northern California in early December triggered a tsunami warning for parts of the California and Oregon coasts. We ask Lori Dengler, professor emeritus of geology at Cal Poly Humboldt, how prepared the area is for a tsunami. Then, François Brunelle has spent nearly 25 years photographing pairs of nearly identical strangers. His work has caught the eye of other artists, researchers and geneticists interested in the phenomenon of doppelgangers. Also, Cuban pianist and composer Chucho Valdés talks about his new album, "Cuba and Beyond."Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

The musical Kristina is based on a series of four novels by Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg detailing a family's poverty-driven migration from Sweden to America in the mid-19th century. On October 12, 1996, a concert version with the original cast was presented, in Swedish, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as an opening event of the Plymouth Music Series (now Vocal Essence) 1996–1997 season in Orchestra Hall, and the next day in Chisago Lakes High School in Lindstrom, Minnesota – the area where much of the events in Moberg's books took place and where the statue of the books' two main characters stands on the main street of the town. In this episode, Philip discusses this milestone in the history of VocalEssence

“It's not where I thought I was going to wind up, but it's been a very, very fulfilling journey,” says Howard Rosenberg, today's guest—who will be joining Chris Batz as co-host—on The Future is Bright podcast. On this episode, Howard recalls his journey from graduating from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in architecture, to finding himself unexpectedly working in corporate law after graduating from Cambridge University in the UK with an MBA. Though they may seem worlds apart, Howard has learned that each field is ultimately concerned with people and finding the best way to solve problems. Howard describes his time at the firm which was then known as Berwin Leighton Paisner where he had a “ringside view” as to just how mergers worked. He describes what it was like to use technology to advance the drafting of contracts just as the internet was taking off, and how this led to his role as CEO of Be Professional, which handled compliance work for small businesses, a collaboration with global consulting firm Deloitte, and the first company founded by both a law firm and a Big Four accountants and practice company. In keeping with his people-centered business practices, Howard is currently Partner and Head of Talent Intelligence and Acquisitions at Baretz+Brunelle, where he helps firms learn the most about potential partner recruits to ensure they're betting wisely on the future success of their firm. He explains his “money ball” analogy which has gotten attention lately in the press, and whether or not he is the Billy Bean of lateral partner recruiting. Quotes “I think the skillset is completely different. It's all about people, but I think lawyers come to the table who are very intellectually gifted individuals. Dealing with architects is a creative kind of endeavor. They're kind of chalk and cheese, but they're trying to get things done, they're trying to solve problems.” (04:01 | Howard Rosenberg) “That's what's interesting about my career, even going to architecture school: it's all transferable skills about learning how to solve problems, it's just that I do it in a visual way, and now in the business community, I'm kind of rewarded from a strategy/BD perspective about helping clients solve their problems around talent acquisition…It's all been a very interesting journey. It's not where I thought I was going to wind up, but it's been a very, very fulfilling career journey today.” (04:24 | Howard Rosenberg) “Of all those roles that I was involved in, all those great people, for me it always came down to the people. And I saw firsthand how interesting and challenging it was to invite law firm partners to join the partnership through the lateral acquisition process and I thought there had to be a better way to streamline this process.” (11:20 | Howard Rosenberg) “You're betting. These people are not inexpensive. You're betting the future reputation of the firm on a handful of people that could really move the dial in a practice area and a geographic location. And I think the time has come that firms can do this; they see talent as an asset class, and that's totally new territory.” (15:15 | Howard Rosenberg) Links Connect with Howard Rosenberg: LinkedIn profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hrosenberg/ Company web profile: https://www.baretzbrunelle.com/howard-rosenberg Connect with Chris Batz: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrisbatz/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/columbus-street/ Columbus Street: https://www.columbus-street.com/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Earlier this month, the Malheur Enterprise reported that the remains of a 27-year-old Idaho woman had been found in a remote area of Malheur County. Last June, Gwen Brunelle told her family she was driving from Boise on a brief trip to California. Her car was found abandoned days later on a gravel pullout less than 30 miles west of the Idaho border. The breakthrough in the case came with the involvement of Aloft Drone Search, a nonprofit in Sherwood that uses aerial and underwater drones to search for missing people. Its founder, John Jones, was contacted by Brunelle’s father in March to help find her. Before Jones traveled to southeastern Oregon, he and his team of volunteers began reviewing more than 13,000 images that were previously taken by an Idaho drone company that had also assisted with the search. Last month, Jones alerted the Malheur County Sheriff of something a volunteer had found in one of the drone images that led to the positive identification of Brunelle’s remains. Jones joins us to talk about the discovery, and the role drone technology can play in locating missing people.
With her college career winding down, Sam Brunelle joins show host Jeff White to discuss her UVA experience, on and off the basketball court, and her plans for the future.

SynopsisOn today's date in 1998, two new Christmas carols debuted in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during the “Welcome Christmas” choral concert of VocalEssence conducted by Philip Brunelle. The two carols, “Sweet Noel,” by Joan Griffith, and “The Virgin's Cradle Hymn,” by Richard Voorhaar, were the prize-winning submissions entered in a contest arranged by the Plymouth Music Series and the American Composers Forum. The idea was to inspire contemporary composers to create new carols that — who knows? — might turn out to be classics over time.As Brunelle put it, “The Christmas carols that we love to sing and hear have a timelessness about them wrapped in their music and words. Out of submissions from all across the USA, [we] selected two that we felt captured this feeling.”Since 1998, the “Welcome Christmas” Carol Contest has continued as an annual tradition, and hundreds of worthy carols have been submitted. Each year, two are selected and premiered in December by Brunelle's choral ensemble. These “Welcome Christmas” concerts are recorded by American Public Media for both regional broadcast and national distribution.Music Played in Today's ProgramRichard Voorhaar - The Virgin's Cradle Hymn; Vocalessence; Philip Brunelle, cond. TIMESTAMP: (4:51) In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss three separate cases of missing people. Jared Shadeed was a successful Immigration Attorney in Washington, D.C. In the Summer of 2023, Jared suddenly quit the job that he had worked so hard for, packed up his vehicle and headed on a cross-country road trip. On July 30, Jared was seen on CCTV checking into an Airbnb in Seattle, Washington. He took his laptop, phone and luggage into the property and he left again. He has not been seen since. Jared's car was found abandoned days later, with the keys inside, in Los Angeles. Prisma Reyes had lunch with her on-again, off-again boyfriend Ryan in April 2019 in Mesquite, Texas. The two got into an argument and her boyfriend stormed off, leaving Prisma at the bar alone. She remained there for a few hours, drinking until the bartender cut her off. Prisma left the venue and became involved in a road rage incident where she showed a gun to the other party. She left the scene before police could arrive. Prisma was last seen on CCTV soon after that, in the parking garage of Ryan's apartment complex. She seems unsteady on her feet and can be seen talking on the phone. Prisma leaves the view of the camera and has not been seen since. Law enforcement have said that Ryan is not a suspect in her case. In June 2023, Gwen Brunelle told her parents and her boyfriend that she was leaving home in Boise, Idaho to go on a road trip to Fresno, California. Gwen's hobby and passion was showing rabbits and she told her family that she was going to meet with a judge in that industry. Gwen packed up her 11 rabbits and hit the road. On Friday June 30, a police officer found Gwen's car abandoned with her rabbits inside – many of them had perished in the heat. Gwen was nowhere to be found. After her disappearance, her family found out that she never had plans to meet anyone in Fresno and CCTV showed some erratic behavior on Gwen's part. As of October 2023, she remains missing. This week on the podcast, Maureen Taylor, The Photo Detective is joined by Francois Brunelle. Francois is a professional photographer and author, who resides in Montreal.Francois and Maureen discuss his fascinating project “I'm Not a Lookalike” where Francois photographs individuals who look similar – and then compares them. These individuals are not related and typically have never met. The idea is to show how sometimes we can have physical similarities to someone we don't even know.Francois has been working on this project since 2000 – making it 23 years since he first began. It's a critical look at something that many who collect vintage photographs and work on their family photographs may not realize – that sometimes people look alike – but aren't always your ancestor. During the world cup, a Brazilian soccer star known as Neymar was busy making appearances. Except, it wasn't really Neymar. It was his identical, unrelated doppelganger, who calls himself “Ney's Lookalike.” Could you have a rouge lookalike out there somewhere too? Canadian photographer François Brunelle has been working for years to photograph strangers who look like twins from all over the world. So far, he has captured 250 pairs of doppelgangers. He joined “Something Offbeat” this week to discuss the project. If you have your own doppelganger, you can learn more on his Instagram page, and at his website, http://www.francoisbrunelle.com.
Let's talk about people who look remarkably similar. For example: Bryan Cranston and Mr. Kerr (Don't tell Chas we're matching him up with Breaking Bad's Walter White again.
For 22 years a photography project called I'm Not a Look-Alike has been underway across the globe. Canadian François Brunelle has been taking pictures of doppelgangers, people who are unrelated but look strikingly similar.

Have you considered the role that social media has to play in manufacturing? Many experienced members of the manufacturing community maintain that social media is not necessary for their businesses. After all, manufacturers are B2B companies that sell to other manufacturers. This kind of thinking, however, ignores the much larger role that social media has to play in terms of branding and storytelling. Here to help us shed light on this topic today is the wonderful Charli K. Matthews, founder, and CEO of Empowering Brands, a digital media and marketing services company that manages the following brands: Empowering Pumps and Equipment, Empowering Women in Industry, and Empowering Industry Podcast. Charli has worked in the pump and equipment industry since 2005 and has established herself as a leader in brand building, growing online networks, and helping industrial companies embrace digital media. In our conversation with Charli, we discuss her passion for storytelling and enthusiasm for technology, and how this facilitated her deep understanding of how to leverage social media platforms. Tuning in you'll hear Charli share clear and insightful instructions on how to build a social media presence from the ground up. From sending the first post to making sure you have buy-in from your employees, to finding your authentic voice. She also addresses the value that women bring to the industry and how to overcome the obstacles that are keeping women from pursuing a career in manufacturing and manufacturing acquisition. To hear all of Charli's incredible insights and valuable tips, be sure to tune in today! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
If you're in a creative role at your agency, you're probably familiar with receiving creative briefs that just don't measure up. Instead of getting inspired to do great work, you're left wondering where to start or what the point of the project is. If you've ever created or pitched a brief, on the other hand, you've probably worked from a template or simply checked off the boxes of the bare minimum — it happens to the best of us! This week, I'm interviewing Tim Brunelle, a creative director with decades of experience in marketing and advertising. Over the years, he has seen hundreds of creative briefs that span the whole spectrum between gold and garbage. When our brief falls flat, it won't inspire our creative minds to do great work. In this episode, Tim challenges us to think bigger and better rather than checking off the boxes and reading from a sheet of paper in our briefing meetings. When we think creatively about our creative briefs, we get a wealth of inspiration in return. A big thank you to our podcast's presenting sponsor, White Label IQ. They're an amazing resource for agencies who want to outsource their design, dev, or PPC work at wholesale prices. Check out their special offer (10 free hours!) for podcast listeners here. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Why creative briefs often fall flat for creative teams Why brief-makers should care about the project just as much as the creative team they're hiring The two core functions of creative briefs What the pipeline of the creative briefing process should look like How to mentor and inspire creativity across teams to collaborate on the briefing process Why location is important when discussing your vision Determining when a creative brief is necessary to inspire a team to do ground-breaking work
