La riposte de la République islamique à l'offensive militaire déclenchée par les Etats-Unis et Israël, samedi 28 février, a pris la forme de bombardements qui ont stoppé les livraisons de pétrole et de gaz produits au Moyen-Orient.Les gardiens de la révolution ont ainsi rendu la navigation impossible dans le détroit d'Ormuz. Cet étroit passage maritime, qui sépare l'Iran des pétromonarchies du golfe Arabo-Persique, est hautement stratégique. En effet, un quart de l'or noir mondial et entre 20 % et 25 % du gaz naturel liquéfié de la planète transitent par cette zone. Le transport n'est d'ailleurs pas l'unique cible de l'Iran puisque des lieux de production d'hydrocarbures ont aussi été touchés par des frappes dans les Etats voisins.Conséquence de cette situation : les prix du gaz et du pétrole ont tant grimpé que Donald Trump s'est efforcé de rassurer les marchés. Le prix du brut s'est envolé. Il a même flambé temporairement de plus de 28%, avant de redescendre après l'annonce d'un recours envisagé aux réserves stratégiques de pétrole par les pays du G7. Depuis le début de la guerre, le gazole a augmenté le plus rapidement, grimpant de plus de 15%. Le carburant routier le plus utilisé en France se vendait vendredi à 2 euros le litre en moyenne, contre autour de 1,72 euro le 27 février, veille des premières frappes israélo-américaines sur l'Iran, selon les chiffres du gouvernement vendredi. Devant cette situation qui touche les automobilistes directement au portefeuille, le gouvernement a pour l'instant écarté l'idée de nouvelles aides à l'achat de carburant.

Inquiétude sur le continent après les frappes américaines et israéliennes et les répliques iraniennes. Dimanche, rapporte Afrik.com, « la Cédéao, la Communauté économique des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, a exprimé sa profonde préoccupation face à l'intensification des hostilités dans le Golfe. La Cédéao qui souligne que toute perturbation prolongée dans le Golfe persique menacerait les flux pétroliers et gaziers mondiaux. Une flambée des prix de l'énergie aurait un impact immédiat sur les économies ouest-africaines, déjà fragilisées par l'inflation et la dépendance aux importations de produits raffinés. Au-delà de l'énergie, l'organisation met en avant les risques pesant sur la sécurité alimentaire. De nombreux États africains dépendent des importations de céréales et d'intrants agricoles transitant par des routes commerciales sensibles. Une aggravation du conflit pourrait donc provoquer des tensions sur les prix des denrées ». Choc externe et tensions internes En effet, le continent africain pourrait être frappé de plein fouet, pointe Le Pays au Burkina : « Une hausse des prix du pétrole alourdirait les déficits budgétaires de la majorité des pays qui dépendent fortement des importations d'or noir, renchérirait le coût des transports et des denrées de base et accentuerait ipso facto la pression sociale sur les gouvernements. Dans des États déjà confrontés à l'endettement et à l'insécurité alimentaire, un tel choc externe pourrait raviver des tensions internes. » WakatSéra renchérit : « Quand le coût de l'or noir grimpe, la répercussion est systématique sur tous les autres secteurs, du transport au loyer, en passant par les condiments pour la sauce de la ménagère ! C'est une équation de plus pour le continent noir, dont nombre de pays sont encore confrontés à des besoins existentiels comme se nourrir ou se soigner (…). » Inquiétudes également sur le plan géopolitique, note pour sa part Jeune Afrique : « l'Érythrée et l'Éthiopie sont déjà au bord de la guerre. Même si l'administration Trump n'a jamais eu l'intention d'agir en tant que gendarme régional, les États-Unis, distraits par d'autres préoccupations, ne seraient pas prompts à séparer les belligérants… au risque d'entraîner le Soudan, l'Égypte et la Somalie dans le conflit. (…) De même, poursuit le site panafricain, au Sahel, le soutien de l'Iran au Niger, au Mali et au Burkina Faso se tarirait. Téhéran soutient l'Alliance des États du Sahel (AES), avec la fourniture de drones et une aide en matière de sécurité. Avec la Russie sous pression sur le front ukrainien, les jihadistes du Sahel pourraient profiter de leur avantage contre les juntes ». Frustrations et colère Et puis, il y a aussi un impact psychologique certain auprès des populations du continent. C'est ce que souligne Ledjely : « Intérieurement, nombre d'Africains éprouvent un sentiment mêlé de frustration et de colère contenue face aux bombardements de l'Iran par la coalition américano-israélienne, pointe le site guinéen. Car le pays des mollahs, malgré tous les reproches que l'on peut lui adresser, demeure une forme de géant de substitution que certains en Afrique se plaisent à voir contester l'hégémonie occidentale. Seulement, cette solidarité pro-iranienne ne peut guère s'exprimer publiquement. Petit Poucet ne disposant d'aucun moyen de peser sur le conflit, le continent ne souhaite pas non plus prendre le risque de courroucer le camp occidental. Il semble ainsi condamné à garder en lui un ressentiment pourtant profond ». Agression, violation, dérive Reste que certains médias du continent n'hésitent pas à donner de la voix. C'est le cas du site TSA en Algérie : « Les frappes menées par les États-Unis et Israël contre l'Iran ne sont ni des opérations défensives, ni des missions humanitaires. Ce sont des actes d'agression, s'exclame TSA, des violations claires du droit international et des démonstrations de force destinées à rappeler au monde qu'au Moyen-Orient, la loi du plus fort prime sur la loi tout court ! Fermer les yeux et se taire devant ces attaques, c'est accepter que le droit international soit optionnel. C'est accepter que certaines puissances puissent frapper quand elles le veulent, où elles le veulent, au nom de leur propre définition de la sécurité ». Enfin, Seneplus à Dakar est sur la même ligne : « Pour l'Afrique, attachée au multilatéralisme et à la primauté des normes internationales, cette dérive constitue une inquiétude profonde. La logique de puissance pourrait primer sur la justice, et les plus vulnérables risqueraient d'en être les premières victimes ».

"To See and Remember" is a composition incorporating elements from a 1965 expedition field recording from the Chocó Department, in Colombia, by Jonathan Ambache and Richard Saumarez Smith, who were then fellow students at the University of Cambridge. The recording that I selected, made on 5-inch reel tape, captures the sounds of the local Emberá people playing music with flute, drums and other percussive instruments. During my research, I discovered a 100-page diary kept by the field recordists, now preserved in the archives of the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. Reading the manuscript, it became clear that Ambache and Saumarez Smith were deeply committed to presenting the sounds of a culture from an isolated part of the world – as they wrote in their diary, “we wanted to be put entirely in their hands.”While studying the manuscript – often with the field recording playing on loop – I realised that some passages of text could work well as spoken-word accompaniment to the composition I had already begun creating. It also became apparent that I was approaching the work from the point of view of the field recordists themselves, rather than focusing solely on the environment depicted in the material, as I would normally. I was, in a sense, trying to hear and see the world as they did.My compositional process involved listening repeatedly to the original field recording in my audio production software, allowing its textures and rhythms to wash over me and guide my decisions. I cut up and rearranged sections of the recording and manipulated them around a drum loop, often stretching the tempo to slow down the percussive strikes and the trill of flute, creating drone-like reverberations. I then gradually added synthesisers, electric guitar and bass guitar, layering various modulation, delay and reverb effects. Inspiration came from both the sound recording itself, and my impressions of the Pitt Rivers Museum. I was struck by the many objects and collections of musical instruments in the museum – giving me the phrases "surrounded by..." and "all around us..." As a wind player I was interested in all the different objects that could be blown through including some very simple pipes with one or two holes. I chose a piece which included a wind instrument and so it became a natural thing to highlight that as part of my piece. After listening extensively to the recording I found myself always wanting to move my feet – it was very much a dancing rhythm with constant movement. I wanted to capture that in my piece, but I wasn't sure how I was going to do this. With lots of discussions going on among the artists about moral aspects surrounding the collecting of these sounds I had to decide whether I was going to "mess around" with the content to the extent that you couldn't hear the original. I wanted to make sure that I was able to include the original recording so instead of my usual cutting up I copied the sections that I felt interesting. These included a drum rhythm and flute phrases (there were two that stood out). I began to experiment with my own wind instruments – metal flute, wooden flute, ocarinas, to see whether I could replicate the phrases. I wasn't too concerned if they weren't totally accurate as I felt I wanted an echo of the original. I was also experimenting with recording binaurally and surround sound in order to reflect the way I had felt at the museum. After doing a little research about where the recording was made, I found a couple of things about the area that suggested rainforest sounds would make a good backdrop to my piece. I think that the sounds of the insects become part of the incessant rhythmic pace of the piece. The piece is very much in my usually style – a mix of rhythm and layers of musical phrases with a backdrop of natural rainforest sounds. It has moments of stillness and quiet, but underneath is the driving constant rhythm of drums and insects. From the moment that I first heard this sound, I thought the flute sounded very much like a little steam train. At first, I researched about Columbian trains and found there is a tourist train to the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, an underground Roman Catholic church built within the tunnels of a salt mine, 200 metres (660 ft) underground in a halite mountain near the city of Zipaquirá, in Cundinamarca, Colombia.I wanted the listener to hear the original recording in the track but did edit the order, tempo and pitch to give an idea of the effort of the train on its journey. I then added a rhythmic synth line to give a feeling of travel and sourced some steam train sounds from freesound. Towards the end of the track I layered other synth lines and a church organ as the train reaches its destination, the salt cathedral. However, the more I worked on the track, It brought back memories of a journey I made many years ago on the little train that takes people up Yr Wyddfa. So a little nod to this is the tune to Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau that comes in at the end of the track.Many of the tracks and audio pieces I create are based on memories and this is no exception. A significant aspect of this project has been research into the location of the recording - the Colombian Chocó department, one of the rainiest regions on Earth. With dense rainforest and flooding, the terrain is uncompromising and one of the most isolated regions of Colombia, with no major infrastructure due to underdeveloped roads, yet it is one of the most richly biodiverse zones on the planet.Since the recording was made, there has been ongoing desecration of the land from both violent conflict and extraction of its gold leading to enforced displacement, cultural disruption, poverty and lack of healthcare and resources. The more I learnt about this volatile status in Chocó in relation to both its natural and violent political climate, the more I felt a responsibility to understand the impact on the Indigenous communities such as the Emberá, as well as the historical roots of the AfroColombian diaspora. The dense and remote jungles have historically provided refuge for African slaves escaping from gold mines and plantations. This dichotomy of the land as both a place of refuge and isolation inhospitable to settlement offered dynamic scope for where this could be taken as a sonic journey of nature and its wilderness doing what it does. This called to mind the concept of the genius loci, Latin for the spirit of a place and the indigenous belief in Animism, the living soul of natural phenomena.My reading around this subject led me to how the elders and shamans of the region are dedicated to the preservation of their ancestral cultural heritage and traditions. Natural forces such as rain are associated with energies called “Jai” and a Jaibaná (shaman) is the intermediary who interacts with these energies to restore balance in the natural world.  The intensity of the rain in the recording evokes a sense of the water element unequivocally dominating the land. I wanted to remain sympathetic to this and imagine the nuances within the interaction of this force of nature with the land itself and to consider what we may hear if we were inside the underworld of the forest, beneath the canopy of trees. We were inspired to consider the torrential rain and wind interacting with an imaginary Jaibaná who summons a call and response to the forest catalysing a sequence of entrainment with the drum and the heartbeat of the forest, as if a natural electrical current has been ignited. The final composition contains both analogue and digital methods. Live recordings of gong, rattles, singing bowls, hand drum, vocal overtoning and other sound effects such as insects and wing sounds created with paper. What is the sound of a poetry work emerging from a fascinating, haunting, remote (for the poet) territory?A reverberation, a story, a journey within a journey, moving through spaces and beings. Awe and gratitude for merging voices temporally scattered. An original 55 second recording, an Indigenous woman calling to a parrot on the Purricha river, a diary, two students – Jonathan Ambache and Richard Saumarez Smith - their anthropological research and a summer trip to Chocó Department, Colombia, 1965.We hear therefore we feel, in a process of listening to archived sounds, screeching ghosts, deep listening into ourselves, with body and soul, listening across species and time, listening against, as a political stance of resistance. Calling and answering to connect and become memory. And then receiving, page by page/jpeg by jpeg, the 1965 journal written by our travellers, and zooming and corresponding with a fellow artist who by chance is an anthropologist, Colombian, learning with Chocó's riverine communities and she is amazing.Walking.
