What is the sound of a poetry work emerging from a fascinating, haunting, remote (for the poet) territory?A reverberation, a story, a journey within a journey, moving through spaces and beings. Awe and gratitude for merging voices temporally scattered. An original 55 second recording, an Indigenous woman calling to a parrot on the Purricha river, a diary, two students – Jonathan Ambache and Richard Saumarez Smith - their anthropological research and a summer trip to Chocó Department, Colombia, 1965.We hear therefore we feel, in a process of listening to archived sounds, screeching ghosts, deep listening into ourselves, with body and soul, listening across species and time, listening against, as a political stance of resistance. And then receiving, page by page/jpeg by jpeg, the 1965 journal written by our travellers, and zooming and corresponding with a fellow artist who by chance is an anthropologist, Colombian, learning with Chocó's riverine communities and she is amazing.Walking. A significant aspect of this project has been research into the location of the recording - the Colombian Chocó department, one of the rainiest regions on Earth. With dense rainforest and flooding, the terrain is uncompromising and one of the most isolated regions of Colombia, with no major infrastructure due to underdeveloped roads, yet it is one of the most richly biodiverse zones on the planet.Since the recording was made, there has been ongoing desecration of the land from both violent conflict and extraction of its gold leading to enforced displacement, cultural disruption, poverty and lack of healthcare and resources. The more I learnt about this volatile status in Chocó in relation to both its natural and violent political climate, the more I felt a responsibility to understand the impact on the Indigenous communities such as the Emberá, as well as the historical roots of the AfroColombian diaspora. The dense and remote jungles have historically provided refuge for African slaves escaping from gold mines and plantations. This dichotomy of the land as both a place of refuge and isolation inhospitable to settlement offered dynamic scope for where this could be taken as a sonic journey of nature and its wilderness doing what it does. This called to mind the concept of the genius loci, Latin for the spirit of a place and the indigenous belief in Animism, the living soul of natural phenomena.My reading around this subject led me to how the elders and shamans of the region are dedicated to the preservation of their ancestral cultural heritage and traditions. Natural forces such as rain are associated with energies called “Jai” and a Jaibaná (shaman) is the intermediary who interacts with these energies to restore balance in the natural world.  The intensity of the rain in the recording evokes a sense of the water element unequivocally dominating the land. I wanted to remain sympathetic to this and imagine the nuances within the interaction of this force of nature with the land itself and to consider what we may hear if we were inside the underworld of the forest, beneath the canopy of trees. We were inspired to consider the torrential rain and wind interacting with an imaginary Jaibaná who summons a call and response to the forest catalysing a sequence of entrainment with the drum and the heartbeat of the forest, as if a natural electrical current has been ignited. The final composition contains both analogue and digital methods. Live recordings of gong, rattles, singing bowls, hand drum, vocal overtoning and other sound effects such as insects and wing sounds created with paper. Inspiration came from both the sound recording itself, and my impressions of the Pitt Rivers Museum. I was struck by the many objects and collections of musical instruments in the museum – giving me the phrases "surrounded by..." and "all around us..." As a wind player I was interested in all the different objects that could be blown through including some very simple pipes with one or two holes. I chose a piece which included a wind instrument and so it became a natural thing to highlight that as part of my piece. After listening extensively to the recording I found myself always wanting to move my feet – it was very much a dancing rhythm with constant movement. I wanted to capture that in my piece, but I wasn't sure how I was going to do this. With lots of discussions going on among the artists about moral aspects surrounding the collecting of these sounds I had to decide whether I was going to "mess around" with the content to the extent that you couldn't hear the original. I wanted to make sure that I was able to include the original recording so instead of my usual cutting up I copied the sections that I felt interesting. These included a drum rhythm and flute phrases (there were two that stood out). I began to experiment with my own wind instruments – metal flute, wooden flute, ocarinas, to see whether I could replicate the phrases. I wasn't too concerned if they weren't totally accurate as I felt I wanted an echo of the original. I was also experimenting with recording binaurally and surround sound in order to reflect the way I had felt at the museum. After doing a little research about where the recording was made, I found a couple of things about the area that suggested rainforest sounds would make a good backdrop to my piece. I think that the sounds of the insects become part of the incessant rhythmic pace of the piece. The piece is very much in my usually style – a mix of rhythm and layers of musical phrases with a backdrop of natural rainforest sounds. It has moments of stillness and quiet, but underneath is the driving constant rhythm of drums and insects. "To See and Remember" is a composition incorporating elements from a 1965 expedition field recording from the Chocó Department, in Colombia, by Jonathan Ambache and Richard Saumarez Smith, who were then fellow students at the University of Cambridge. The recording that I selected, made on 5-inch reel tape, captures the sounds of the local Emberá people playing music with flute, drums and other percussive instruments. During my research, I discovered a 100-page diary kept by the field recordists, now preserved in the archives of the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. Reading the manuscript, it became clear that Ambache and Saumarez Smith were deeply committed to presenting the sounds of a culture from an isolated part of the world – as they wrote in their diary, “we wanted to be put entirely in their hands.”While studying the manuscript – often with the field recording playing on loop – I realised that some passages of text could work well as spoken-word accompaniment to the composition I had already begun creating. It also became apparent that I was approaching the work from the point of view of the field recordists themselves, rather than focusing solely on the environment depicted in the material, as I would normally. I was, in a sense, trying to hear and see the world as they did.My compositional process involved listening repeatedly to the original field recording in my audio production software, allowing its textures and rhythms to wash over me and guide my decisions. I cut up and rearranged sections of the recording and manipulated them around a drum loop, often stretching the tempo to slow down the percussive strikes and the trill of flute, creating drone-like reverberations. I then gradually added synthesisers, electric guitar and bass guitar, layering various modulation, delay and reverb effects. From the moment that I first heard this sound, I thought the flute sounded very much like a little steam train. At first, I researched about Columbian trains and found there is a tourist train to the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, an underground Roman Catholic church built within the tunnels of a salt mine, 200 metres (660 ft) underground in a halite mountain near the city of Zipaquirá, in Cundinamarca, Colombia.I wanted the listener to hear the original recording in the track but did edit the order, tempo and pitch to give an idea of the effort of the train on its journey. I then added a rhythmic synth line to give a feeling of travel and sourced some steam train sounds from freesound. Towards the end of the track I layered other synth lines and a church organ as the train reaches its destination, the salt cathedral. However, the more I worked on the track, It brought back memories of a journey I made many years ago on the little train that takes people up Yr Wyddfa. So a little nod to this is the tune to Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau that comes in at the end of the track.Many of the tracks and audio pieces I create are based on memories and this is no exception. L'existence de trous noirs supermassifs fugitifs, résultant de fusions de galaxies, est prédite depuis longtemps. Pour la première fois, en mars 2023, le télescope spatial Hubble avait donné un indice laissant penser qu'on en avait repéré un, avec l'existence d'une sorte de longue trainée de gaz choqué (voir nos épisodes 1469 et 1493). Aujourd'hui, l'équipe à l'origine de cette observation initiale a refait d'autres observations mais cette fois avec le télescope Webb. Les données confirment que cet objet se déplace à une vitesse supersonique dans le milieu intergalactique, perturbant le gaz diffus et créant un arc de choc. Les chercheurs estiment que cet objet est très probablement un trou noir supermassif, éjecté de sa galaxie et traversant le milieu intergalactique à grande vitesse. Pour la première fois depuis plus d'un siècle, les États-Unis pourraient voir leur population diminuer dès cette année. En cause, le durcissement extrême de la politique migratoire menée par Donald Trump. Derrière ce basculement démographique historique se cache un choc économique majeur, aux répercussions sur la croissance, le marché du travail, les finances publiques et la compétitivité technologique du pays. Les chiffres sont sans équivoque. Selon le dernier bilan du Census Bureau, entre juillet 2024 et juin 2025, la population américaine n'a progressé que de 0,5%, soit 1,8 million de personnes supplémentaires. Un niveau historiquement faible. Cette dynamique pourrait encore se détériorer. Plusieurs études estiment désormais que la population américaine pourrait reculer dès cette année, un scénario inédit depuis plus d'un siècle. Cette bascule s'explique très simplement. Les États-Unis vivent historiquement sur deux moteurs démographiques, les naissances et l'immigration. Or, aujourd'hui, les deux ralentissent simultanément. Le taux de fécondité est tombé sous le seuil de renouvellement des générations, tandis que le moteur migratoire est en train de s'effondrer. En cause, la multiplication des mesures anti-immigration décidées par Donald Trump : restrictions drastiques des visas étudiants, professionnels et familiaux, refus d'entrée étendus à plus de 70 pays, expulsions accélérées, verrouillage renforcé de la frontière avec le Mexique. Autant de décisions qui ont fait chuter brutalement les flux migratoires. La croissance repose sur trois piliers fondamentaux : la population active, la productivité et l'investissement. Lorsque la baisse démographique touche directement la main-d'œuvre disponible, la croissance potentielle ralentit mécaniquement. Selon le think tank Brookings, la seule baisse de l'immigration retranche déjà 0,3 point de croissance par an à l'économie américaine. Un chiffre qui peut sembler modeste, mais qui est colossal pour une économie habituée à croître autour de 2,5% par an. Ce ralentissement s'explique principalement par un choc sur le marché du travail. Les immigrés représentent environ 19% de la main-d'œuvre américaine, soit près d'un travailleur sur cinq. Dans certains secteurs clés – agriculture, restauration, construction –, leur rôle est absolument indispensable. Résultat : les pénuries de main-d'œuvre explosent, les délais de production s'allongent, les coûts augmentent, les prix suivent, et au bout de la chaîne, la croissance est directement affectée. Une dynamique qui va à l'encontre des promesses économiques affichées par Donald Trump. Moins de travailleurs immigrés signifie moins de cotisations, moins d'impôts et davantage de dépenses sociales. Selon l'institut Cato, les immigrés ont versé plus d'impôts qu'ils n'ont reçu d'aides sociales chaque année entre 1994 et 2023. Dans ce contexte, la contraction de l'immigration fragilise directement l'équilibre budgétaire du pays et accélère la crise de financement de la Sécurité sociale américaine, déjà menacée à moyen terme. Enfin, l'enjeu dépasse largement la seule sphère budgétaire. L'immigration joue un rôle central dans la recherche, la technologie, l'intelligence artificielle et la finance. Une statistique l'illustre : 40% des chercheurs de la Silicon Valley sont nés à l'étranger. Limiter les visas étudiants et scientifiques affaiblit donc directement l'avantage technologique américain, dans un contexte de concurrence accrue avec la Chine et l'Europe. En définitive, l'arbitrage entre souveraineté politique et rationalité économique apparaît de plus en plus coûteux pour les États-Unis. Les effets du durcissement migratoire pourraient se faire sentir bien au-delà du mandat de Donald Trump, en pesant durablement sur la croissance, l'innovation et le leadership mondial de la première économie de la planète. Six ans après la mort en prison du prédateur sexuel, la justice américaine a publié vendredi dernier plus de trois millions de nouveaux documents issus de l'enquête le visant. Des millions de fichiers qui demandent du temps pour être analysés, triés entre courriels incriminants et simples mentions d'un nom, mais qui révèlent déjà ou confirment les liens entre le criminel sexuel et de nombreuses personnalités du Vieux Continent… Et ce, même après sa première condamnation en 2008. Au terme d'un plaider-coupable, le milliardaire avait alors écopé de plusieurs mois de prison pour « racolage » de mineures.Royauté, dirigeants politiques, figures économiques ou du monde de la culture… La liste n'épargne aucune sphère du pouvoir, ni aucun pays. Parmi ces personnalités, plusieurs noms français sont notamment cités dans ces documents. On découvre ainsi que Jack Lang, l'ancien ministre de la Culture, a fait des affaires avec Jeffrey Epstein. Les e-mails révèlent une réelle proximité entre eux. La fille de Jack Lang, Caroline, a, elle, cofondé une société offshore dans les îles Vierges avec Jeffrey Epstein. L'ancien ministre de la Culture a déclaré lundi à l'AFP assumer « pleinement les liens » qu'il avait pu créer avec Jeffrey Epstein, « à une époque où rien ne laissait supposer qu'il pouvait être au cœur d'un réseau de criminalité ». Caroline Lang, de son côté, a confié à Mediapart avoir fait preuve d'une « naïveté confondante » et a démissionné du poste de déléguée générale du Syndicat de la production indépendante (SPI), où elle venait d'être nommée.Au fil des millions de pages, le nom de Marine Le Pen ressort indirectement. Selon un mail d'un journaliste adressé à Jeffrey Epstein en 2018, on apprend ainsi que l'ex-stratège de Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, a rencontré Louis Aliot, alors compagnon de Marine Le Pen, pour évoquer le « refinancement » du Rassemblement national (RN). Mais ces révélations font vivement réagir. À l'Assemblée nationale, La France insoumise a proposé la création d'une commission d'enquête transpartisane sur l'affaire Epstein.La publication de cette nouvelle masse de documents a également provoqué une cascade de réactions et de démissions en Europe. La famille royale norvégienne se retrouve aussi sous le feu des critiques, après la publication de correspondances entre la future reine de Norvège et Jeffrey Epstein. Au Royaume-Uni, le prince déchu Andrew est sous le coup de nouvelles révélations, tandis que l'ex-ambassadeur et ancien ministre Peter Mandelson a, lui, démissionné du Parti travailliste.
