Recorded live at the Comics Without Borders / Sans Frontières gathering at Rice University, this episode dives deep into international comics publishing, aesthetic risk-taking, and how underground networks drive a truly global comics culture. David Schilter, publisher and editor of Latvia's acclaimed kuš! comics, joins us alongside Pedro Vieira de Moura, Portuguese critic, writer, and co-founder of the bookstore/gallery Mundo Fantasma. We talk about how a small-format anthology changed Latvian comics forever, why RAW magazine changed Pedro's life, and how comics have always been a place for outsiders to find their people. It's about pornographic comics, lipstick in mirrors, misnumbered anthologies, institutional resistance, aesthetic weirdness, bookstores as public educators, and why no one in Latvia is publishing Maus. In this issue, we shine a little more light on Fun Weekly, our comic book for the wee ones. Then again, how many adults would shit their pants in delight if they could ever find issue #47? Swaddled in a Mac Raboy Captain Marvel Family cover, Otto Binder and C.C. Beck serve up a 15 page adventure of them, Basil Wolverton brings us a 4 page Scoop Scuttle knee-slapper, Carl Barks sends Justin Time and his Uncle Scrooge back to the Aztec Empire for a meaty 12 pager, a center spread luxuriously reprints a Little Nemo In Slumberland by Winsor McCay, George Carlson delivers another delightful Jingle Jangle Tale, Walt Kelly gives us a Pogo and Albert story, John Stanley supplies a perfect kid comic, and Boody Rogers tops it off with a Sparky Watts story. Superb!
In his mission to further illuminate the not-so-brightly lit corners of the Amazing Comics Group, our Host describes the various features of Amazing Weekly with a wit wetted by wine and Pepsi. Take #116 for example. Cover by L.B. Cole, a Thun'da story by Frank Frazetta, a Plastic Man adventure by Jack Cole, Spacehawk by Basil Wolverton, a western tale by Everett Raymond Kinstler, a Prince Valiant reprint by Hal Foster, a classic post-war Spirit by Will Eisner, Hey Look by Harvey Kurtzman, a romance comic by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, Babe by Boody Rogers, and a Bernard Krigstein story. Now that's a gonga!
Remember Zero Monthly #283? Cover by Robert Williams, a B. Kliban one-pager, the latest chapter of Freakwave by Peter Milligan and Brendan McCarthy, a Harvey Pekar vignette drawn by R. Crumb, the latest chapter of V For Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, a Gerald Jablonski one-pager, an Incal story by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius, a long Ben Katchor story, a Rick Geary one-pager, a painted comic by Kent Williams, a comic by Art Spiegelman, a P. Craig Russell comic, a Hunt Emerson short, a Dragonflame story by Don McGregor and Paul Gulacy, a Joost Swarte short, an El Borbah story by Charles Burns, a reprint of Pablo Picasso's fanzine comics work, and a comic by Steve Bissette and Rick Veitch? No, YOU DON'T! Because it only exists in my brain, along with the other 749 issues! How about Zero Monthly #145? Cover by Frank Frazetta, a short by Harvey Kurtzman and Bill Elder, a Richard Corben comic, the latest chapter of Lone Wolf And Cub by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, a comic by Gilbert Shelton, a horror story by Bruce Jones and Berni Wrightson, a Basil Wolverton 2-pager, the latest chapter of Lt. Blueberry by Jean-Michele Charlier and Jean Giraud, a Rick Griffin psychedelic comic, a Voltar story by Alfredo Alcala, an Edward Gorey story, a Jim Steranko comic, a painted comic by Jeff Jones, a Mr. A story by Steve Ditko, a Greg Irons comic, a comic by Bernard Krigstein, a Jules Feiffer vignette, and a comic by Alex Niño. IT'S ALL IN MY HEAD! I HAVE TO GO NOW!
And now the second and concluding part of this rambling and too brief biography of Basil Wolverton, as he finally gets his big break in a contest for one of the greatest comic strips of all time.
And now the first part of ths rambling and too brief biography of Basil Wolverton, one of the more eccentric artists of the Golden Age.

In March, a comic by Eli Valley landed him on the radar of Meghan McCain. There was nothing extraordinaire about the piece from a cartoonist who has long wading into the divisive world of U.S.-Israeli relations, but the commentary about the American right’s relationship with the country caused The View cohost to lash out on Twitter. That, in term, put a relatively unknown cartoonist in the national spotlight. But in spite of the conversations it provoked, Valley explains that publicity doesn’t always equate to income. He’s quick to plug his recently opened Patreon account in hopes of making a living at his art. Valley’s work is part commentary, part personal catharsis, exorcising the demons of the most politically charged era of most of our lifetimes. In deals in politics and identity through a lens of grotesqueries inspired by humor cartoonists like Basil Wolverton. It doesn’t avert its gauze from the subject matter — a fact that makes for better work, but not always financial gain.

Time Codes: 00:00:25 - Introduction 00:02:24 - Setup of interview 00:03:34 - Interview with Ger Apeldoorn 01:06:35 - Wrap up 01:08:17 - Contact us Just in time for the San Diego Comic-Con -- where he and Craig Yoe will be meeting with fans and signing books -- Ger Apeldoorn is on the show to talk with Derek about his new book, Behaving Madly: Zany, Loco, Cockeyed, Rip-off, Satire Magazines (IDW/Yoe Books). It's a beautifully produced work that highlights the many knockoffs of Bill Gaines's Mad that appeared between 1954 to 1959, attempting to capitalize on the kind of success the Usual Gang of Idiots enjoyed once the title changed to magazine format. These Mad wannabes appeared with such titles as From Here to Insanity, Cockeyed, Bunk!, SNAFU, Lunatickle, Who Goofed?, Thimk, Shook Up, Frenzy, Frantic!, Loco, Zany, and Nuts! You might think -- or thimk -- that these rip-offs would all be cheesy and subpar, but as Ger makes clear, these short-lived satire magazines included work from such comics legends as Jack Davis, Al Jaffee, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, Joe Kubert, Howard Nostrand, Bob Powell, Ross Andru, Basil Wolverton, and Russ Heath. Derivative and second-rate? Perhaps. But the selections in Behaving Madly are no laughing matter. Well...actually, they are. Check out this great promo from Yoe Books!
Today's Guest: Monte Wolverton, author, The Wolverton Bible Order The Wolverton Bible by Basil Wolverton from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! Cartoonist Basil Wolverton was known for his grotesque drawings, fantastically odd creatures, spaghetti-like hair, smoothly sculpted caricatures and insanely detailed crosshatching. His career in the golden age of comic books lasted from 1938 until 1952, after which his illustrations and caricatures extended into such publications as Life, Pageant and MAD magazines. Stylistically, he has been regarded as one of the spiritual grandfathers of underground and alternative comix. Plop! #1 with cover art by Basil Wolverton. (April 9, 2009) Less well known and understood is his work for the Worldwide Church of God, headed until 1986 by radio evangelist Herbert Armstrong. From 1953 through 1974, Wolverton, a deeply religious man, was commissioned and later employed by the church to write and illustrate a narrative of the Old Testament (including over 550 illustrations), some 20 apocalyptic illustrations inspired by the Book of Revelations, and dozens of cartoons and humorous illustrations for various Worldwide Church publications. Compiled and edited by Wolverton’s son, Monte, the 304-page Wolverton Bible includes all of Wolverton’s artwork for the Worldwide Church of God corporation. Monte Wolverton delivers commentary and background in the introduction and in each section. Many of the illustrations in this book are regarded as Basil Wolverton’s finest work. Still others have never been published, and some of the humorous drawings printed here rival Wolverton’s work in MAD magazine. It's the first of the month, so it's time for the Two Guys with PhDs to look through the latest Previews catalog. Plus, Andy's back on the podcast, so there's a lot for him and Derek to catch up on. After Andy re-acclimates to the world of podcastdom, the guys plunge into the November solicits. They discuss upcoming titles such as Bad Blood #1, Serenity: Firefly Class 03-K64 – Leaves on the Wind #1, and Gasoline Alley, Vol. 1: The Complete Sundays 1920-1922 (Dark Horse); Showcase Presents: Men of War and The Unwritten, Vol. 2: Apocalypse #1 (DC/Vertigo); Basil Wolverton's Weird Worlds: Artist's Edition and Rio: The Complete Collection (IDW Publishing); Deadly Class #1 and Minimum Wage #1 (Image); the rerelease of the original Miracleman (Marvel); recent Archie comics; Revelations #1, Curse #1, and Hacktivist #1 (BOOM! Studios/Archaia); The Original Johnson Omnibus (Comicmix); The Twilight Zone #1 and Legenderry #1 (Dynamite Entertainment); Ant Colony (Drawn and Quarterly); Prison Pit, Book 5 and Nothing Eve (Fantagraphics); curious manga adaptations – Ulysses into comics? — from One Peace Books; Snow Piercer, Vol. 1: The Escape (Titan Comics); and USNA: United States of North America (USNA Publishing). Along the way, Derek and Andy see how many of their listening constituencies they can alienate…although Andy already has a head start, given recent reviews dissing him as closed-minded on The Comic Alternative‘s iTunes page. To that reviewer we say, “Bite us!”
