Ep.156 features Thaddeus Mosley (b. 1926, New Castle, PA), a Pittsburgh-based artist whose monumental sculptures are crafted with the felled trees of Pittsburgh's urban canopy, via the city's Forestry Division. Using only a mallet and chisel, Mosley reworks salvaged timber into biomorphic forms. With influences ranging from Isamu Noguchi to Constantin Brâncuși—and the Bamum, Dogon, Baoulé, Senufo, Dan, and Mossi works of his personal collection—Mosley's sculptures mark an inflection point in the history of American abstraction. These “sculptural improvisations,” as he calls them, take cues from the modernist traditions of jazz. “The only way you can really achieve something is if you're not working so much from a pattern. That's also the essence of good jazz,” Mosley says of his method. Mosley is the recipient of the 2022 Isamu Noguchi Award. His work has been exhibited and acquired by major museums and foundations since 1959, including the Mattress Factory Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (2009); the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (2018); Harvard Business School, Boston, Massachusetts (2020); Sculpture Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (2020); Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, Maryland (2021); Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen, Norway (2022) and Art + Practice, Los Angeles, California (2022). His work is held in public collections including the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, Maryland; the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, New York; Brooklyn Museum, New York, New York; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and the Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville, Maine. His traveling solo exhibition Forest, previously at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, and Art+Practice, Los Angeles, will continue on to the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas May 2023. "dear fellow settler colonizer," is a Minus Plato series, rebroadcast on Broken Boxes for STTLMNT Digital Occupation as resource archive directed towards education of settler ancestors who may like to more relationally engage with work created by and centering Indigenous artists, such as with the STTLMNT project. “The show will explore the transformative work of contemporary global Indigenous artists from the explicitly problematic perspective of the settler colonizer. By critically examining our complicity in ongoing structures of colonial violence, the show offers tools for settler colonizers to engage with Indigenous artmaking beyond positions of exploitation, appropriation and other harmful moves to innocence.” "This episode will discuss approaches to curriculum for global Indigenous arts from within and beyond the settler institutions of the university and the museum. In addition to an ongoing conversation on this topic with Cannupa Hanska Luger, concept artist of STTLMNT: Indigenous Digital Occupation, the episode centers on a narrative by Jaime Morse, educator for Indigenous Programs and Outreach at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa. Focusing on her experience as an educator at the two large-scale exhibitions of global Indigenous art, Sakahàn (2013) and Àbadakone (2019), Morse describes the work of Sámi architect and artist Joar Nango (Sámi Architectural Library, 2019) at the latter as a space of gathering and knowledge exchange, not only for other artists in the exhibition, but also for Indigenous community members. At the beginning and end of the episode are two spoken word pieces by writer, artist and curator Taqralik Partridge, of Inuit, Scottish and Canadian heritage: ‘Decolonisation is a Pyramid Scheme' and ‘Untitled'. The former was included in a TV show created by Joar Nango and Ken Are Bongo called Post-Capitalist Architecture TV for Bergen Kunsthall, while the latter was included in NIRIN: 22nd Sydney Biennale, curated by Brook Andrew. ‘Untitled' was originally written following a performance by Indigenous Brazilian artist Denilson Baniwa in Toronto and Partridge agreed for it to be included in today's episode with a request for donations to support the South American Indigenous Network Emergency Fund – here is the link to donate: www.gofundme.com/f/south-american…k-emergency-fund " -Minus Plato

Episode 6. Martin Clark is a curator and the director of Camden Art Centre in London. Art has taken Martin all over the world. From the Arnolfini in Bristol and Tate St Ives in Cornwall to the Bergen Kunsthall in Norway. Sharing his love of new art and artists is what drives Martin every day. The Botanical Mind: Art, Mysticism and The Cosmic TreeThis exhibition just opened at https://camdenartcentre.org/ (Camden Art Centre) in London – on until December 23. The Botanical Mind brings together the work of over 50 artists, spanning more than 500 years, to investigate the ongoing significance of the plant kingdom to human life, consciousness & spirituality. Listen to this episode to hear Martin Clark speak about the inspiration behind this show. Plus the necessary twists and turns brought on by a certain… worldwide pandemic. Not something you're expecting to happen right when an exhibition is scheduled to open! Art & The Environment:A more sustainable global perspective. Yes, we can still be committed to internationalism. But how can the art world be more sustainable? Artist residencies and virtual exhibition walkthroughs are just a couple of possibilities. Foster local creativity but still reach out and celebrate our multicultural world. Finding creative solutions. There's loads of work still to be done as we all consider the environmental impact of our businesses, our lives. Does that mean less flying? Fewer big exhibitions travelling the world? Let's all find ways to continue to explore, make connections and celebrate the diverse world we live in. Further Inspiration:https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/mar/30/funny-weather-art-in-an-emergency-olivia-laing-review (Olivia Laing: Funny Weather) A fantastic collection of essays on art and artists. http://olivialaing.co.uk/lonely-city (Olivia Laing: The Lonely City) A different take on loneliness: “that loneliness could be a really productive, creative and special space, particularly for art and the making of art”. https://norwegianrain.com/ (Norwegian Rain) Made in Bergen. “The philosophy is simple. Hard core functional and waterproof outerwear that does not compromise on style. The hi-tech is hidden”. Gorgeous rainwear to make you welcome the rain! Seasonal Colour Analysis:Ever wondered why certain colours suit you more than others? Discovering your true colours is a transformative experience. It's like having a face lift… but better. Wearing your true colours evens out your complexion, makes you look more youthful and energetic, and is a brilliant confidence booster. Wearing your true colours is also likely to get the compliments flowing. What to know a little secret? It's all about your skin tone. And how colour reflecting close to your face reacts with your skin. Colour analysis is a powerful blend of genetics, science and psychology. Alexandria helped Martin discover his true colours shortly before the pandemic hit the UK. Have a listen to this episode to hear more about Martin's experience. The Renaissance Society is a contemporary art space that has a very strong character when it comes to architectural design. Artist David Maljković describes it as a “monumental space that is one dimensional with a really particular condition of light.” The vinyl floors are so present—not concrete or plastic—they are tactile. Known for his collaborative approach to curation and attention to details, Maljković worked with Renaissance Society curator Karsten Lund for the exhibit “Also on View,” to select works that complement the space. The Weekly’s Manisha AR, sat down with both artist and curator to go behind the scenes of the exhibit and talk about the ways in which the space inspired the show.
