Forensic Architecture is a research agency that investigates state violence and environmental destruction. It reconstructs events that states worldwide wants obscured, from Israel to the UK and from the Mediterranean to Ukraine. In doing so, they have invented a whole new discipline of investigation. On Novara FM, FA's Assistant Director of Research, Samaneh Moafi, tells […]
Last Saturday as I hosted TED X Dalt Vila on stage here in Ibiza, I invited a talk about the Truth. It IS supposed to be absolute, unquestionable and the facts that form the very foundation of everything we know or at least expect to be true. But in today's world—where deepfakes blur reality, misinformation spreads like wildfire, and algorithms shape what we see and believe—how do we even begin to separate fact from fiction? We live in an era where narratives outweigh nuance and headlines out shout honesty. Where the sheer volume of information doesn't make us more informed, but more divided, more uncertain, and more vulnerable to have the wool pulled over our eyes. Our next speaker is someone who carved out career as an investigative journalist. Bob Trafford spent years unearthing hidden truths, analysing evidence, and navigating the delicate line between what is real and what is manufactured working for Forensic Architecture. His work doesn't just reveal what we believe to be true—but why we believe it. So, in a world where the truth is increasingly up for debate, how do we find it? And just as importantly—how do we protect it? Bob Trafford.
Samaneh Moafi is the Assistant Director of Research at Forensic Architecture, a research agency operating across human rights, journalism, architecture, art, academia and the law. Their interdisciplinary investigations have been crucial in providing evidence in cases of state violence where ordinary and typical investigative journalism has failed. Samaneh joins me today to discuss their most recent report released on the state of genocide in Palestine at the hands of Israel. ‘A Cartography of Genocide' shows how Israel has repeatedly reshaped the Gazan territory, attacked citizens in safe zones, destroyed food and water systems, targeted medical infrastructure, attacked civilian infrastructure and targeted aid. They have come to the conclusion that the violence in Gaza is a systemic and organized campaign to destroy life.Planet: Critical is 100% independent and community-powered. In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Non-Resident Fellow Peter Beinart talks to Eyal Weizman about his work at Forensic Architecture and the recently released "Cartography of Genocide" - an interactive platform that maps Israel's genocidal bombardment of Gaza and use of mass evacuation orders to destroy civilian life. Along with the platform, Forensic Architecture released a 827-page report documenting Israeli war crimes and has presented its evidence and findings to the International Court of Justice. “Israel aims to cancel and erase Palestinian life!” UN Special Rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territory, Francesca Albanese, and director of Forensic Architecture, Eyal Weizman, expose the mechanics of Israel's genocide in Gaza. Speaking to Palestinian journalist from Gaza, Ahmed Alnaouq, Francesca references her new UN report titled “Genocide as Colonial Erasure”, which documents how Israel is wielding its genocide as part of a broader, systematic and intentional state-organised forced displacement and replacement of the Palestinians. A new 800 page report published by Forensic Architecture titled “A Spatial Analysis of the Israeli Military's Conduct in Gaza since October 2023”, uses innovative digital technology to illustrate Israel's wholesale destruction of the Gaza Strip which has left “no safe place” for Palestinians under siege and bombardment, according director Eyal Weizman. Ahmed Alnaouq is a Palestinian journalist from Gaza co-founder of We Are Not Numbers.
Today on Speaking Out of Place we are joined by Shourideh Molavi, who talks about the ways in which Israel has waged a protracted war on both the people and environment of Gaza. Linking this war to its colonial precedents, Molavi explains who she, as a researcher for the Forensic Architecture project, combines technologies like satellite imaging with on-the-ground stories from Palestinian farmers to produce a powerful form witnessing, and testimony to Israel's war. She connects the trauma felt by the environment and the trauma felt by the people. She also tells of the new and powerful forms of resistance and resilience that take place at the nexus of nature, landscape, and the Palestinian people.Shourideh Molavi is the lead Israel/Palestine researcher for Forensic Architecture, linking their investigations to the work and research of civil society, grassroots groups and human rights defenders in the country. She is a scholar in political science and human rights and trained with a background in International Humanitarian Law. She is also Senior Lecturer in the Institute for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University in NYC.

What is the composition dirt and dust? Is there a better place to hang the washing? And how can I make my home more comfortable? These are all questions which preoccupy our guests.Jay Owens first became interested in the nature of dust around fifteen years ago. Her book entitled ‘Dust' considers its global significance as a factor in both the dirt in our homes and major economic and political events from the dustbowls of the 1930s to the fallout from nuclear testing.Architect Marianna Janowicz is thinking about what we do with our laundry, how buildings are not well designed to help dry it. The water vapor produced causes indoor mould and damp and yet in many places outside drying is banned. In an era where there's great interest in finding low energy solutions to a range of humanity's problems what can be done to alleviate the burden, the domestic drudgery of the washing cycle? More on Marianna's work here ; https://www.editcollective.uk/And are you comfortable with gas central heating, maybe you'd prefer a wood burner? How we heat our homes and what this means for the way we live is a long term research theme for Sam Johnson Schlee, but with increasing cost of fossil fuels and their role as key drivers of climate change what is the future for home comfort?Producer: Julian SiddleYou might also be interested in Free Thinking episodes (available as the Arts and Ideas podcast) looking at Mid Century Modern and changes in the home; sneezing, smells and noses; Housework (and Hannah Gavron's The Captive Wife); and an episode called Breathe brought together writer James Nestor, saxophonist Soweto Kinch, Imani Jacqueline Brown of Forensic Architecture and New Generation Thinker Tiffany Watt Smith.

This episode is about planning in Palestine, and especially Gaza. As you all know, this is a podcast about Latin American Cities. However, right now it seems difficult to talk or think about anything other than the genocide unfolding in Palestine. Many of those of us who think critically about Latin American cities find so many connections between our histories and struggles and the settler-colonial project of Israel and its occupation of Palestine. This is particularly true when we reflect on the role of planning and architecture in cementing the occupation, dispossession and violence upon Palestinian people, and particularly Gazans. This is the focus of today's episode. To discuss this, it is truly my privilege to host cohost, Mekarem Eljamal and our two guests, Dana Erekat and Eyal Weizman. Dana is a Palestinian architect and planner, with a BA in architecture from UC Berkeley and an Masters in City Planing from MIT. The list of positions she has held is as impressive at it is long. Among these, she has worked with the UNDP, with the World Bank, the Kenyon Institute, and more. From 2013-2012, she was Head of Aid Management and Coordination Directorate/ Special Advisor to the Minister at the Palestinian Ministry of Planning and Administrative Development, during which she led the technical committee for the 2014 Gaza Reconstruction plan. She is currently the CEO of the data analytic company Whyise. Eyal Weizman is Professor of Spatial and Visual Cultures and founding director of the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is perhaps most known as the founder and director of Forensic Architecture, a multidisciplinary research group based at Goldsmiths, University of London that uses architectural techniques and technologies to investigate cases of state violence and violations of human rights around the world.
Adrian Lahoud is an architect, urban designer, researcher, and the dean of the School of Architecture at the Royal College of Art. Previously he was director of the MA program at the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths and a research fellow at Forensic Architecture. In this conversation, Jarrett and Adrian talk about the intersection of decolonization and decarbonization, architecture as a site for posing problems, and fostering an interdisciplinary research culture. In this episode, we talk to Forensic Architecture, a research agency based at Goldsmiths, University of London, renowned for investigating human rights violations globally. We speak to one of Forensic Architecture's Lead Researchers (who will not be named), about the dire situation in Gaza since Israel's siege began. They talk about the work they are doing to use evidence-based research to uncover the truth and document human rights abuses as the death toll of civilians reaches 10,000 people in one month. The conversation continues to talk more about Forensic Architecture's work in Gaza as well as the West Bank and Israel. The team have released preliminary analysis to cast doubt on Israel's claim that they were not responsible for bombing of Al-Ahli Hospital on 17 October 2023. Using techniques including visual analysis, sound, testimonials, and more, Forensic Architecture were also able to provide evidence in the murder of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh as well as uncover invisible tactics of occupation including the lost mass graves in Tantura from 1948, and the herbicidal warfare against Gaza.As always, if you are enjoying the Art Persists podcast please leave a review wherever you listen. Multimedia artist and activist Imani Jacqueline Brown maps out the long history of extractivism in southern America, constellating 18th century settler colonialism, oil and gas extraction, and contemporary environmental crises. South of the Mississippi River sits the US state of Louisiana, a place transformed from ‘Plantation County' in the 1700s, to an ‘apartheid state', and today, ‘Cancer Alley', for its polluted land and water. Colonial legacies have contributed to contemporary environment problems - including Hurricane Katrina - and continue to shape community planning and housing, a phenomenon known as ‘extractivism'. Artist Imani Jacqueline Brown pushes back against the ‘segregation' of human/nature, and Black humans from humanity, in her multidisciplinary practice. The artist shares how culture is too ‘entangled' with public political action, and her ‘grassroots research' in permit applications awarded to fossil fuel businesses like Texaco (now Chevron) and the Colonial Pipeline Company. The artist describes how she has collaborated to map enslaved peoples' burial grounds, as marked by magnolia trees, highlighting pan-African traditions of ecological regeneration. Drawing on her work with Follow the Oil and Occupy Museums, Brown suggests that culture and capitalism are often closely linked - and the unique power of repackaging these projects in the form of artistic constellations. The remains of the Palestinian village of Tantura now lie under Dor Beach, an Israeli seaside resort about 20 miles south of Haifa. 75 years ago, on May 22, 1948, Zionist militia occupied this village as part of a year-long campaign of ethnic cleansing of indigenous Palestinians and the destruction of over 500 villages. Forensic Architecture's Lead Palestine Researcher discusses their comprehensive analysis of the available cartographic, testimonial, and photographic evidence related to the Palestinian village of Tantura before and after the Palestinian Nakba in 1948. One year ago, Israeli soldiers shot and killed Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. To this day, no Israeli soldier has been indicted for the killing. Now, a new report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) finds that the lack of accountability for Abu Akleh is part of a pattern: Though the Israeli army has killed 20 journalists since 2001, no Israeli soldier has ever been charged. Jewish Currents senior reporter Alex Kane discusses the report with CPJ's Sherif Mansour—and also talks about the life and death of Abu Akleh with writer and attorney Jennifer Zacharia, Abu Akleh's first cousin. Story 1 (00:03:10): A robocall obtained by Tennessee Holler has raised questions and made false allegations about what happened inside the Tennessee Capitol on March 30. The call was allegedly produced by Enlight Tennessee, a conservative advocacy group. The automated voice called for the expulsion of three state representatives and accused them of being "radical activists." However, the Tennessee Highway Patrol denied any reports of angry mobs or confiscation of pipe bombs or brass knuckles at the Capitol that day. Learn more about this controversial robocall in this news report.Story 2 (00:22:03): The Missouri House has voted against a proposal to ban minors from openly carrying firearms on public land without adult supervision. The measure failed by a 104-39 vote, with only one Republican supporting it. Democratic Rep. Donna Baringer explained that police had requested the change to prevent children from walking around with firearms in public areas. However, Republicans argued that the ban would infringe on gun rights and that it was not appropriate to charge people with crimes based on assumptions. The measure was part of an ongoing debate on the best ways to fight crime in St. Louis. Story 3 (00:35:27): During the protests of 2020, Portland police used tear gas at harmful levels. A new study by Forensic Architecture reveals the amount of tear gas that was deployed during the infamous "Tear Gas Tuesday" of June 2, 2020. In this video, we take a closer look at the study's findings and the impact of tear gas on the protesters and residents of Portland.Sources: wbir.com - Local Knoxville, Tennessee News NetworkAPNews.comKGW.com - Local Portland, Oregon News NetworkJOIN Inspired Disorder +PLUS Today! On the frontlines of technological leaps are often people in power - governments, police, intelligence agencies and militaries - trying to use new research to advance the ways in which they operate. But what happens when these powers aren't used for good? Who can keep the powerful in check in a global digital age?In this episode of The Big Picture, we sit down with architect and investigator Eyal Weizman to talk about how Israel uses urban planning to expand its control of the West Bank and why he decided to start a crime-fighting team of architects, journalists, and coders called Forensic Architecture to hold governments to account.Producer & Audio Editing: Houda Fansa JawadiFilming & Recording: Hossam SarhanGFX: Anas Alaa www.middlleeasteye.net We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode, and any guests you'd like us to have on our show. (https://www.easy-greek.org/membership).

Aseel AlBajeh, Legal Researcher and Advocacy Officer at Al-Haq Human Rights Organization discusses Israel's systematic targeting of Palestinian civil society and the shutting down of the offices of six Palestinian human rights groups. A joint probe by Forensic Architecture and Al-Haq has recently uncovered evidence that an Israeli sniper repeatedly shot at Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Jess & Jamal explain why Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid speaks from both sides of his mouth, one for an international audience at the UN and another targeting Israeli voters.
On this episode, Jewish Currents Contributing Editor Joshua Leifer talks with Oren Ziv—co-founder of the award-winning photojournalist collective Activestills and reporter for +972 Magazine and its Hebrew sister site, Local Call—about Oren's decade-plus experience documenting protest and resistance in Israel/Palestine. Since the Activestills collective's founding in 2005, Ziv and the group have captured some of the most iconic, and often painful, images of social and political struggle: from the demonstrations against the Israeli separation barrier in the late 2000s, to the campaign for African asylum seekers' rights in the 2010s, to the opposition to gentrification in the Mizrahi neighborhood of Givat Amal, and much more. Ziv's own dogged reporting has made him one of the most perceptive journalists in the field; through his camera, Ziv has opened up the injustices of the occupation to the world. Ziv discusses his journalistic method and the experience of documenting the violence of apartheid. Dr Hannah Meszaros Martin is not a newcomer to the Colombia Calling podcast having previously joined us on Ep413 "What is Forensic Architecture?" On Episode 425 she brings her wealth of knowledge on the topic of glyphosate to the podcast to discuss its history, use in the eradication of coca and beyond. She says: "the eradication of coca cannot be seen as separate from the armed conflict in Colombia." What becomes clear and as Meszaros Martin explains, in Colombia and in this industry, the licit and the illicit rely on one another. Hear about land becoming sterile after decades of fumigation with glyphosate and then re-appropriated by destructive industries such as petroleum exploration, palm oil and cattle farming. We also discuss the possible policies presented by the two main presidential candidates, Gustavo Petro and Federico Gutiérrez, regarding fumigation with glyphosate in Colombia.
