It's been a weird week. Here's a peek behind-the-scenes of ALSO in PINK. I talk technical mishaps and pivots. Blame mercury retrograde if you like. The long and short of it is that the new interview I was hoping to have out for you today won't be ready until next week. It's a funny story though and also strangely timely. Timely in the sense that we're now in what's called mercury retrograde. According to those who practice astrology, it's a period of time when Mercury appears to travel backward across the sky — hence the retrograde. And this time is associated with confusion, frustration… delays. There's lots of talk about disruption to forms of communication, information and technology. You'll hear my ‘woo-adjacent' take on this, and practical tips I've picked up along the way.

Deep Dive: How to Keep New Year's Resolutions & The Importance of Sleep

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 19, 2021 26:06

Today's deep-dive episode focuses on New Year's resolutions. Should you make them and how can you keep them? And what's the one New Year's resolution we should (really) all make? It's All About SMART GoalsS for Specific. Don't leave any room for misinterpretation. Instead of the generic: I want to get fit, try something more specific, like: I want to be able to run 5K. M for Measurable. Plan how to track your results. Hold yourself accountable. Use an app or a calendar or a piece of paper to track your progress. Schedule in time to run and put a lovely little tick on your calendar. Mark it on your app. Track your success. A for Achievable. Set a realistic goal. A realistic New Year's resolution. So I'm guessing it's not going to be “qualify for the Olympics” if you've never done much in the way of fitness. Instead, how about: I'll run three times each week. R for Relevant. Make sure your New Year's goal aligns with who you want to be: I'm committed to this New Year's goal because I want to feel fit and strong. I want to be in the best shape of my life post-pandemic. T for Time-bound. Break your goal down and set deadlines for each stage of the process needed to achieve your goal. So, something like: by the end of March, I want to be able to run 5K. That's why a programme like https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/couch-to-5k-week-by-week/ (Couch to 5K) is so effective. It's a SMART goal in action. It gives you a specific goal. It breaks it down week by week. It holds you accountable. And it's achievable – even for someone like me who is historically a terrible runner. Sleep Is Your SuperpowerIf there's one resolution we should all prioritise, it's this: improve your sleep. Sleep scientist Matthew Walker has a fantastic https://www.masterclass.com/classes/matthew-walker-teaches-the-science-of-better-sleep (MasterClass) on this topic. He does a wonderful job of breaking down the science of sleep in terms we can all understand. Matthew Walker's 6 tips for better sleep:Regularity. Go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time every day (yes, weekdays and weekends). Even if you have a dodgy night of sleep, wake up at your usual time. Temperature. Keep it cool. Your brain and your body need to drop their core temperature in order to get to sleep and stay asleep. Aim for a room temperature of about 18°C or 65°F. Darkness. Darkness in the evening helps trigger the release of melatonin, a hormone that helps us feel sleepy. With that in mind, try to stay away from computer screens and mobile devices in the last hour before bed. Walk it out. Don't stay awake in bed for long periods of time. If you can't get to sleep after 25 minutes, instead of lying awake in bed, get out of bed and do something different. Be aware of the impact of alcohol and caffeine. As a rule of thumb, try to stay away from caffeine in the afternoon and the evening. And try not to go to bed too tipsy. Caffeine can decrease the amount of your deep non-rapid eye movement sleep: that deep restorative sleep. So, even if caffeine didn't keep you awake in the night, you probably won't wake up feeling refreshed the next morning. Have a wind-down routine. It takes time for your brain to feel ready for sleep. Help yourself out by disengaging from mobile devices an hour before you want to go to sleep. Instead, try to do something relaxing. Find a wind-down routine that works for you. And when you've found it, stick to that routine. Take this https://www.cet-surveys.com/index.php?sid=61524&newtest=Y (MEQ test) to help you figure out the best sleep for you. Fashion has always been an important part of Kerry's life. Kerry Cordero is on a mission to show people, one beautiful outfit at a time, how to dress with purpose and live a life of intention and dreaming. We discuss the importance of not saving your best pieces and explore how ADHD is a secret superpower when it comes to design. And, of course, there's nothing bad about being a rebel. All you need to do is rebel well. ✨ Kerry's LinksWebsite: https://styleandselfexpression.com/ (styleandselfexpression.com) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/firstlookimage_/ (@firstlookimage_) Inspirationhttps://www.foliosociety.com/uk/the-velveteen-rabbit.html (The Velveteen Rabbit) by Margery Williams. This is Kerry's favourite childhood book. “It's about becoming real and how you kind of have to live your life and get a little dirty”. Entrepreneurship & ADHDA number of famous entrepreneurs also happen to have ADHD. People like business mogul Sir Richard Branson, IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad and JetBlue founder David Neeleman. So Kerry, as an ADHDer, is in excellent company. Did you know that people with ADHD are three times more likely to own their own business? Entrepreneurship fits perfectly with the ADHDer's need for stimulation and willingness to take risks. The design world can learn a lot from ADHD too. You could even say ADHD is a design superpower. After all, with their naturally low tolerance for unclear, overcomplicated design, ADHDers can offer valuable insight. Even a streamlined brand like Apple could learn some lessons. Kerry was not impressed with the Apple Podcasts app for a start. Style NotesRebel well. Even as a 7-year-old, Kerry knew she did not want to wear those yellow gauchos her mother was insisting on. Gauchos became fashionable in the late 1960s. They are wide, calf-length trousers, frequently made of leather and copied from a style worn by South American cowboys. Don't save your best for never. If you have a fabulous piece of heirloom jewellery you love, dig it out of hiding and wear it. Wear what you love. Find a way to be personally expressive with your style. As Kerry says, “Personal style is about making a choice. And you can always do something to choose to wear what you love.” Be irresistible. Be fascinating. And, of course, rebel well.

This Ask Alexandria episode discusses some of the key social dilemmas of our times, including our relationship with fast fashion. And, yes, you can KonMari your plants. But have you ever heard of a plant throne?  Social Media AddictionAddicted by design…As a society, we are addicted to email. We are addicted to social media. And it's not by accident. Social media platforms are specifically designed to keep us engaged, to keep us scrolling. They're designed to keep us on site for as long as possible. They cleverly manipulate us and, over time, social media changes how we think and behave. It affects our perception of truth and how we interact with the world. So, what's the solution?Be aware that there's a problem A great place to start is to watch the recent Netflix documentary https://www.thesocialdilemma.com/ (The Social Dilemma). It's a fascinating look at human psychology. It's the ultimate cautionary tale for our times. Like climate change, we can all be part of the solution. But we first need to acknowledge that there's a real problem. Be intentional with your time Turn off all of your notifications. That's right. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter… whatever platform you use, turn off your notifications. Engage on your own terms. Decide how much time you want to spend on social media & hold yourself accountable. By being intentional, you can start to redefine your relationship with social media. Take action Start a conversation about social media addiction. KonMari your social feeds. Consider who you follow on your social platforms. Do the posts that arrive in your feed add value to your life? Do they make you feel good about yourself? If they don't, there's a simple solution. Unfollow. Just express yourself. It's okay. Be free”. Self-Care in the Corporate WorldIf you want to live the corporate dream but feel you are TGIF-ing your life away… Pause. Take more time for self-care. Self-care is not selfish. KonMari Deep Dive: Kitchen & Thanksgiving Special

Welcome to the first deep-dive episode. This is an opportunity to go all-in on a particular topic. I'll highlight a specific aspect of the KonMari Method or something to do with style. Today, we're focusing on the kitchen. With Thanksgiving just a couple days away and Christmas not so far behind, we are officially entering holiday season. ✨ Benefits of a KonMari'd KitchenYou know where everything is. You make the most of the space you have. Your surfaces are (comparatively) clear. You have food & ingredients you enjoy eating & cooking with. You no longer waste food. And yes… your kitchen brings you joy. Common Kitchen StrugglesThe spice drawer. Can you find the smoked paprika in less than 10 seconds? Sure, you might have a “spice drawer” but your spices are frankly out of control. Food waste. You don't mean to waste food but that's what happens. Food gets lost. Sometimes you can't find ingredients (or leftovers) until they've gone off and are inedible. Unused gadgets. Do you have a surplus of kitchen tools you don't want or need? Don't know what ingredients you already have. You buy an ingredient and then discover you have another pack of it stuffed at the back of some cupboard. The junk drawer. You have a junk drawer full of all sorts of random stuff. Cluttered surfaces. Your kitchen surfaces are rarely clear. There doesn't seem to be enough storage space for all your kitchen items. General chaos. You stuff things in drawers higgledy-piggledy because you don't have proper homes for these items. No place for backstock. If you decant flour and other things into containers, you struggle to know what to do with that leftover flour and those leftover other things that don't fit in your containers.

She provided services to patients of all ages before leaving the profession to become a full-time mom. We discuss the importance of self-care and Shaunna reveals how her background in recreational therapy has helped with the various relationships in her life, including with her three children. Benefits of Recreational TherapyDiscover what's missing. Where's the need? What in my self-care am I lacking? Rec therapy could be right for you if (like one of Shaunna's clients) “you've been so busy that you don't know what your likes and interests are anymore”. Greater autonomy. And control of your life. Develop the skills to be able to do it on your own. Learn to plan, set and reach your goals. Better quality of life. Essentially this is what it's all about. Activity-based learning to enhance your quality of life. Create Time for YourselfSelf-care needs to be an essential part of all of our lives. So, now is the time to figure out: How much time do you need for self-care? How can you make sure it happens? Everyone's different. So take a few minutes to imagine what your ideal self-care routine would look like. Do you need 30 minutes every day? Do you need more? Do you need less? How much time do you need? Schedule that time (daily, weekly) Plan what you'll do during that time Make it happen! Making yourself a self-care schedule is important. “Now this time is blocked out. Nothing else can take this time”. And Shaunna has found that if she doesn't plan what she's going to do during her “me time”, it no longer really fulfils her self-care needs. If she doesn't plan anything fun for herself, she might just get some of her to-do lists done and it's no longer as therapeutic. ✨ Full show notes for this episode: https://alsoinpink.com/13-shaunna-nordstrom/ (visit our official site) And, wherever you get your podcasts: https://ratethispodcast.com/alsoinpink (Rate & Review ALSO in PINK) Thank you for your support!

Her study features cubby holes, where she curates memorabilia from her books. Yes, there's even one corner that's all Girl with a Pearl Earring “kitsch stuff”. Saying No (more often)The pandemic has given us all time to reflect and consider what we want more of (and less of) in our lives. How do we want to live… going forward? Tracy has realised that she really loves unstructured time and wants to actively create more of it by saying no more often. How could you say no more often? Next time you consider taking on a new project or are asked to do something, pause and think about why you would do it… Would you earn, learn or do good? Would you feel adequately compensated for your time and energy? If not, dare to say no. Style NotesJust because everyone else says you should do something, it doesn't mean you need to follow their advice. Like Tracy, you can choose not to wear red lipstick. You can make your own style waves.

They create a really busy job for themselves that doesn't actually pay really well.” https://drjoedispenza.com/collections/books/products/breaking-the-habit-of-being-yourself-paperback-book (Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One) by Joe Dispenza. Episode 6. Martin Clark is a curator and the director of Camden Art Centre in London. Art has taken Martin all over the world. From the Arnolfini in Bristol and Tate St Ives in Cornwall to the Bergen Kunsthall in Norway. Sharing his love of new art and artists is what drives Martin every day. The Botanical Mind: Art, Mysticism and The Cosmic TreeThis exhibition just opened at https://camdenartcentre.org/ (Camden Art Centre) in London – on until December 23. The Botanical Mind brings together the work of over 50 artists, spanning more than 500 years, to investigate the ongoing significance of the plant kingdom to human life, consciousness & spirituality. Listen to this episode to hear Martin Clark speak about the inspiration behind this show. Plus the necessary twists and turns brought on by a certain… worldwide pandemic. Not something you're expecting to happen right when an exhibition is scheduled to open! Art & The Environment:A more sustainable global perspective. Yes, we can still be committed to internationalism. But how can the art world be more sustainable? Artist residencies and virtual exhibition walkthroughs are just a couple of possibilities. Foster local creativity but still reach out and celebrate our multicultural world. Finding creative solutions. There's loads of work still to be done as we all consider the environmental impact of our businesses, our lives. Does that mean less flying? Fewer big exhibitions travelling the world? Let's all find ways to continue to explore, make connections and celebrate the diverse world we live in. Further Inspiration:https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/mar/30/funny-weather-art-in-an-emergency-olivia-laing-review (Olivia Laing: Funny Weather) A fantastic collection of essays on art and artists. http://olivialaing.co.uk/lonely-city (Olivia Laing: The Lonely City) A different take on loneliness: “that loneliness could be a really productive, creative and special space, particularly for art and the making of art”. https://norwegianrain.com/ (Norwegian Rain) Made in Bergen. “The philosophy is simple. Hard core functional and waterproof outerwear that does not compromise on style. The hi-tech is hidden”. Gorgeous rainwear to make you welcome the rain! Seasonal Colour Analysis:Ever wondered why certain colours suit you more than others? Discovering your true colours is a transformative experience. It's like having a face lift… but better. Wearing your true colours evens out your complexion, makes you look more youthful and energetic, and is a brilliant confidence booster. Wearing your true colours is also likely to get the compliments flowing. What to know a little secret? It's all about your skin tone. And how colour reflecting close to your face reacts with your skin. Colour analysis is a powerful blend of genetics, science and psychology. Alexandria helped Martin discover his true colours shortly before the pandemic hit the UK. Have a listen to this episode to hear more about Martin's experience. Plants, Curiosities & The Natural World with Designer/Photographer Ines Stuart-Davidson

Episode 5. Ever heard of terpenes or a Desert Rose Selenite? Well, you're in for a treat! Ines Stuart-Davidson has a love of curiosities and the wonders of the natural world. In this episode you'll hear her get down and dirty with plants as she talks about photography techniques. And you may even add some new lingo to your vocabulary. Plants play an important role in her work life too. Ines designs a broad range of creative work for Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew – otherwise known as the ever-amazing Kew Gardens. Ines's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/idlondon/ (@idlondon) Inspiration:https://www.livingyourwildcreativity.com/art-gallery-1-mitchell-1 (Andy Goldsworthy) British artist, sculptor, photographer and environmentalist whose collaborations with nature are truly awe-inspiring. https://surrealsucculents.co.uk/ (Surreal Succulents) Based in Cornwall. Wonderful place to get inspiration & bring more succulents into your life! https://www.crystal-singing-bowls.co.uk/ (Crystal Singing Bowls) or https://konmari.com/how-to-use-a-tuning-fork/ (KonMari Tuning Fork) To add a soothing resonance to your life. Subtle healing powers to help you reset and get balanced. Plant Photography Tips:Make sure the light is just right. On a bright day “everything just glows” and you can't capture the actual colours of a plant. Best times for nature photography are early in the morning, when it's overcast, during golden hour or even later on in the evening. Get down and dirty. Try shooting on the same level as the plants. Or focus on a different vantage point and capture the surrounding architecture. Try something new! See if you can develop your own style of plant photography. https://download.cnet.com/Mirror-Lab/3000-12511_4-77355128.html (Mirror Lab) is an Android app to help you creatively enhance your images. The Benefits of Creative Limitations:Sometimes it helps to have a brief. Next time you go out for some nature photography, try shooting with a theme. How about focusing on fungi or honing in on those detailed macro shots? By creatively limiting yourself, you can test your skills and come up with innovative, often unexpected results. Give group photography a try. Whether you all go out and shoot with the same theme or explore your own ideas, you're bound to come away inspired. Push yourself and expand your creative horizons. Take Time for YourselfWhether, like Ines, you take time to discover your “reason for being” through the Japanese practice of Ikigai or delve deeper into the philosophy of Stoicism, remember to take time for yourself today… and every day. Self-care is not selfish. Ask Alexandria: Is There Such a Thing as an Ideal Life? & How Do You Look Good on Zoom Meetings?

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 15, 2020 29:07

Episode 4. Today we're shifting gears a bit. This episode is all about you! Each month I do a special Ask Alexandria episode, where I answer your questions about life, KonMari and style. This month's questions are wide-ranging. There's a lot about style, we touch on the KonMari Method, and things get philosophical too. Here are some highlights... To look your best for online meetings: Sort out your lighting. Get near a natural source of light. But, whatever you do, don't have your back to the window. To look really professional, boost your natural glow with artificial light. Use what you already have around your home, or get something like Elgato's Key Light Air, which really is a game-changer. And position yourself well. Make sure your camera is at eye-level and directly in front of you.  And try not to wear black close to your face. Warm skin tones don't like high-necked black tops. So, if you have to wear black, be sure to show some skin. Or wear a top in one of your best colours with a black blazer. Worried you have too much stuff? You're not alone. Most of us have homes filled with items we no longer really want in our lives. The https://alsoinpink.com/service/konmari-method-tidying/ (KonMari Method) of tidying gives you a real opportunity to take a closer looker at your belongings and address more fundamental questions too, like how you want to live. Hire a KonMari consultant (like me!) to help you make sense of your space. Style Notes: Style is all about confidence. If you feel great in what you're wearing, people will respond to that confidence. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. And, in the end, dress for yourself. And... dare to dream. With limitless time or money, what could you achieve? It's helpful to imagine, unencumbered, and open yourself up to possibilities you might not otherwise consider. Get Moving with Physiotherapist Susan Harper-Clarke

Episode 3. Have you ever thought of seeing a physio? Susan Harper-Clarke is passionate about getting people active for life, not just for lockdown. This episode is action-packed with fitness (and life) tips to help you get motivated. And… she even surprises herself by giving fashion advice. Listen to this episode to hear about Susan's experience with Team GB in the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics. Susan's Instagram: @thepocketphysio Inspiration: https://www.instagram.com/lifestylemedicinedoctor/ (Lifestyle Medicine Doctor) The instagram account of cardiologist and best-selling author, Aseem Malhotra. He is on a mission to save lives, a million at a time. Benefits of Physiotherapy: Move better and understand your body more. Learn how to manage your condition without being totally reliant on your physio. Get fitter. And, for instance, lose that lockdown weight. Get stronger. Be more robust and less likely to sustain injury. Fitness Tips: Just move! “I would say just move is the best thing that I can advise people.” Find an activity you're going to enjoy. If you enjoy it, you're more likely to make it habit. Here are a few ideas: dance class, swimming, yoga, pilates, tai chi, rowing, cycling, walking, running, strength training, circuits… Give it a go for a relatively long period of time (four to six weeks). Sometimes it does take time to build up strength, endurance, tolerance, enjoyment of something. Couch to 5K: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/couch-to-5k-week-by-week/ (Couch to 5K) is a 9-week programme that, yes, gets you off your sofa and (gradually) running 5K. Susan recently completed this and it's transformed her relationship with running. Endurance activities (like running) have never been Susan's strong suit, but she now really enjoys it! You can download each week of the Couch to 5K as a podcast or get the entire programme as a smartphone app. Healthy Mindset: Start each day with a morning hug. Yes, you can hug yourself or do a big family “pile on”. Either way, it sets off your natural endorphins. Approach life with a positive attitude. That doesn't mean you can't also put your foot down. Don't put up with stuff that you've maybe accepted in the past. Be kind, to yourself and to others. Don't take yourself or anyone else for granted. Find your own path for what your ideal life means for you. And… embrace diversity. Style notes: Susan's top tip is jean shorts. “You can dress them up. You can dress them down. You can wear them with wedges, with trainers, with heels, with flip flops. Jean shorts are my absolute go-to fashion accessory item.” And… most importantly… Get off your bum and move! Episode 2. What's it really like to work with a KonMari consultant? Charlotte Fairbairn tells you about her experience. Plus a bit about why millennials are obsessed with plants. Alexandria helped Charlotte complete her KonMari Marathon earlier this year and you'll hear all about that process in today's episode. Charlotte is fascinated with human behaviour and psychology. She is keen to help others and explore the mind body connection through teaching, therapy and coaching. Professionally, Charlotte plays violin and viola, and she and Alexandria met on the early music scene in London. Inspiration: Brené Brown TED Talks: https://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_the_power_of_vulnerability (The Power of Vulnerability) Brené Brown studies courage, vulnerability, shame and empathy, and this talk became a viral hit! https://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_listening_to_shame (Listening to Shame) Exploring what can happen when people confront their shame head-on. KonMari Tidying Tips: WHEN should you do your KonMari Marathon? Anytime, of course. BONUS points though for completing it before you move house. It makes moving so much easier! BUT… Don't just throw things away. Be mindful in how you dispose of those items you no longer want in your life. Donate, donate, donate! Ideal Lifestyle Vision Questionnaire: http://alsoin.pink/create-your-ideal-lifestyle-vision (Get access) Benefits of KonMari with Alexandria: As Charlotte found… when left to your own devices, it's easy to justify keeping almost anything. That's where working with a KonMari consultant really helps. That outside perspective could be exactly what you need to break old habits and hone in on what truly brings you joy. Book a https://alsoinpink.com/service/konmari-method-tidying/#pricelist (Discovery Call) with Alexandria to see how working with a KonMari consultant could benefit you.
