In this episode Ian & AL remember one of the magical nights of Irish boxing - Bernard Dunne v Ricardo Cordoba - incredibly 16 years ago this week! The lads also look back over TJ Doheny v Nick Ball & the controversy that followed, Mick Conlan's comeback & future plans aswell as all the fights from Madison Square Garden on St. Patrick's Day. We look back over the phenomenal career of one of boxing's greatest EVER, George Foreman who passed away recently after a career that saw him fight Muhammad Ali, Joe Fraizer, Ken Norton, Ron Lyle, Gerry Cooney, Evander Holyfield, Tommy Morrison, Jimmy Young, Axel Schultz & Michael Moorer. A total of 76 wins and 5 losses.
The Rocky Road hits its 200th episode during Paddy's week – so who better to have on than the King of New York himself, Ireland's John Duddy. He had a famous fan in Jake LaMotta and later worked closely with Robert DeNiro, who had starred as The Bronx Bull in Martin Scorsese's epic Raging Bull back in 1980. Even today he's boxing royalty in the Big Apple but John Duddy is also a son of Derry and an Irish boxing cult hero, someone who helped popularise professional boxing in the early noughties, leading to a wave of up and coming fighters to follow their dreams either at home or across the pond. Show that you can become a big name in Dublin and you could be labelled ‘the next Bernard Dunne'. Show that you're ready to break the Big Apple and you might, you just might, be labelled ‘the next John Duddy'. The Derry Destroyer fought nine times at Madison Square Garden between 2005 and 2010 – winning them all – and lost just twice in a 31-fight career. At one stage he was right in the mix to fight for the middleweight championship of the world – which LaMotta held between 1949 and 1951 – but boxing had other plans for him. John wrapped up his career in 2011 when he realised his hunger had dimmed, cancelling an all-Irish match-up with Andy Lee, and, bitten by the acting bug, he's never looked back. He's still involved in the sport to this day, spearheading a new programme with the Moving Brains Foundation which put on 54 two-hour sessions for people with Parkinsons Disease in 2024 – and continues to grow and grow. And he is also coaching at Trinity Boxing in New York City, a stone's throw from the World Trade Centre, with the hope of one day opening his own gym. In Part 1, we look back at John's early years in the Irish amateur ranks, his determination to unseat Michael Roche as light-middleweight champ and the Corkman's incredible gesture before he finally did, his boxing pals who made it all so enjoyable, and hunkering down to avoid a hurricane in Cuba during a training camp. We also discuss the links in the chain that go from his early life until now – his uncle Jackie, his dad Michael, Charlie Nash, Ken Buchanan, Barry McGuigan and Roberto Duran. This is the ultimate Rocky story. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Having had a few weeks of what you could call a boxing break - the Irish boxing scene exploded into life with a return of a show that would remind fans of those heady Bernard Dunne nights. On this occasion it was ‘King' Callum Walsh on a truly unique UFC production that lived up to all the hopes & expectations.ian and Al look back over the card that also featured Shauna O'Keefe, Edward Donovan v Craig O'Brien, Emmet Brennan v Kevin Cronin and more.in Association with
In this episode, I look back at the amazing battle between Bernard Dunne and Ricardo Cordoba at the Point Arena in Dublin 2009. The pair had one of the greatest ever fights held in an Irish ring for the WBA Super-Bantamweight title.
‘I'll tell you a funny story…' Dennis Hogan is coming home. After 36 fights all over the world – from his base in Australia to Mexico via Germany and the USA – the Kildare man is finally set to realise his dream. He's been visualising a world title fight at The Point ever since his days sitting ringside at Bernard Dunne's big nights there and now it's all set to go down on the Katie Taylor v Chantelle Cameron bill at the 3Arena on May 20. Kildare man Hogan will defend his IBO world title against JJ Metcalf at the venue and he's already fought the fight in his mind 100 times. Here ‘The Hurricane' discusses his amateur career and kryptonite Kenneth Egan, starting out in Oz, giving up the gargle, adopting a world champion mindset long before he started fighting for titles, the Aussies' ridiculous propensity for shortening every word and the time a German newspaper reported that he was related to Crocodile Dundee. He recalls the look of shame he got from Mexican boxing royalty when he was ‘ripped' in Monterray and the fighter who told him ‘you're going home in a bodybag' in New York as well as the Croke Park ambition that's still burning within and the inspiration he's taken from joining fellow Lilywhite fighter Gary Cully at Matchroom. Hogan's fought the best of the best and at 38 years old, reckons he's still at the base of the mountain, getting ready to scale the beast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A fight that is often forgotten considering Frampton would win his first world title against Martinez; his challenge for the EBU title would be the toughest test of the Belfast man's young career - and a night when his star would rise. Several years before winning world titles, unifying divisions, selling out nights in Las Vegas and winning Ring Magazine's fighter of the year award; a young Carl Frampton, like all prospects, reached the stage of his career where he had to answer questions and prove that his was a talent that justified the buzz surrounding his ascent in the professional ranks. On the 9th of February 2013 he took on hard-hitting Kiko Martinez in the Odyssey Arena, Belfast for the EBU and IBF inter-continental super-bantamweight titles. Frampton was 15-0 heading into this contest while Kiko, only one year older, had twice as many fights and boasted a record of 27-3. Nowadays, Kiko is well known to Irish boxing fans as one of the most popular away fighters seen in the opposite corner down through the years, but in 2013 he was a hard-hitting danger man who had previously knocked out Bernard Dunne and posed a serious threat to the young hopeful from Tiger's Bay.

Corona Virus appeal, Fermanagh pitches & Bernard Dunne's Dub role by SportsJOE
On this weeks episode of the podcast Matt sat down and spoke with former professional boxer Steve Ormand. Steve talked about his love for boxing and how boxing's been part of my life since I was about four years of age. His father Patrick was an All Ireland amateur lightweight champion and my grandfather and several uncles on both sides of the family were boxers, so he grew up listening to all the stories about boxing. Steve's uncle Greg was a boxing coach, so he first went to the boxing gym at the age of six or seven and had his first amateur bout around the age of 11. Steve talked about the people that were his inspirations growing up and his times sparring former WBA Super-Bantamweight champion Bernard Dunne, who was also from Clondalkin. Steve was coached for a while by his father Brendan, a 1976 Montreal Olympian. Steve talked about the commitment and dedication in life as a professional boxer. Steve and Matt spoke about the impacted of amateur boxing clubs have of communities in working class area's. Steve is now working as a boxing fitness coach. Steve works with kids and adults, ages ranging from six to 60 years of age. Thanks to Steve for coming onto the show and sharing his story. Aged six, Bernard Dunne sat on Barry McGuigan's knee and told McGuigan that someday he too would be like him. Twenty-three years later Bernard Dunne became a world boxing champion and proved his skill, determination and focus to achieve. Ten years on from that magical moment, he joins me on the Real Health podcast to talk about the power of self-belief and never letting the negative thoughts in your head control you. He also discusses his role as High Performance Director for Irish boxing with the goal of being the number one High Performance team in the world as we approach the 2020 Olympic Games. "It’s all about preparation, being ready and enjoying what you do," he tells me. "It’s about making the right choices. Sometimes we sabotage ourselves because of a fear of what we can achieve, whether it’s going for an Olympic medal or running a 5km race." “If you’re trying to reset anything in your life, these negative thoughts are only fleeting. And you know what, sometimes you do get knocked down. But one setback doesn’t mean you give up. Don’t let the voice that wants to take the easy road control you.” For more information and episodes from the Real Health podcast you can visit the show page: https://www.independent.ie/podcasts/the-real-health-podcast/ You can also contact me on social media - I'm @KarlHenryPT on Twitter and Instagram and the show email is realhealth@independent.ie. Tis the season to get reading, fa-la-la--la-la, etc, etc. The Sports book market kicks into gear over the coming weeks so we wanted to give an insight into the lowest of the low, the poor (we're always poor), benighted ghost-writers who ferry the thoughts of the sportspeople each year to shelves and stockings throughout the land. Mary Hannigan has had the pleasure of helping Des Cahill tell his story this year, as Gavin Cummiskey has done in the past with Bernard Dunne and Geordan Murphy, as Malachy Clerkin has done with Ruby Walsh. We get into the ups and downs, the endless transcriptions and the rows won and (mostly) lost. Jordan Larmour has doubled down on his scintillating performance against Italy on the weekend by calling out the All Blacks, conferring upon him instant hero status. John O'Sullivan joins us to break down Saturday's win and to read the runes ahead of the Argentina game. We also tell the brilliant story of Katrina Parrock, the three-time All-Ireland camogie champion who scored the winner in yesterday's women's FAI Cup final for Wexford Youths. All in your Added Time podcast this Monday, with Malachy Clerkin and Gavin Cummiskey
