Ray Leonard Jr is the Son of Boxing Legend, "Sugar" Ray Leonard. Now that is out of the way. Ray Jr has more accomplishments, businesses and downright good things to be said about him than I have letters allowed to type intros description...and through it all, he has kept his family close. With a connection to the Asphalt Industry and an entrepreneurial spirit, Ray speaks to our community very well, and connects even better, as generational success is something our industry is made of. Ray talks about his father, lessons from the sports management world, how he and I got connected, some great stories and where you can catch up with him online. I really loved being able to sit down and record this one with Ray, he is a genuine man of good soul. Hope you enjoy this conversation as well. -Marvin Link to save $199 off the 28 Circles Marketing Package: https://28circles.net/asphalt-app/?fpr=marvin21

Acompanhe!

Pat Mullin and Mark Radulich continue with their newest history of boxing podcast series on the Four Kings of Boxing this time it's chapter 6 - The Four Kings of Boxing: Leonard vs Hearns 1. Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Thomas Hearns, billed as "The Showdown", was a professional boxing match contested on September 16, 1981 for the WBA, WBC, The Ring and lineal welterweight titles. Sugar Ray Leonard won the WBC welterweight title with a fifteenth-round knockout of Wilfred Benítez in 1979. He lost it to Roberto Durán by a close decision in June 1980 and regained it five months later in the infamous No Más Fight, in which Duran quit in the eighth round. In June 1981, Leonard moved up to the light-middleweight division for one fight, knocking out Ayub Kalule in nine rounds to win the WBA light-middleweight title. Hearns won the WBA welterweight title in 1980, scoring a second-round knockout of Jose 'Pipino' Cuevas in Detroit, Michigan. He made three successful title defenses, stopping Luis Primera, Randy Shields, and Pablo Baez. Promoted as "The Showdown" Leonard (30-1 with 21 KO) fought Hearns (32-0 with 30 KO) on September 16, 1981 at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, NV to unify the world welterweight championship in a scheduled fifteen-rounder. They fought before a live crowd of 23,618 and a worldwide TV audience of some 300 million. Former middleweight and super-middleweight champion Michel Nunn, one of the pound for pound stars on the 1990s, went from a life of celebrity and fame to nearly two decades behind bars. Nunn defeated plenty of big names, Curtis Parker, Sambu Kalambay, Iran Barkley, Marlon Starling, Donald Curry and he also fought James Toney, Frankie Liles and Steve Little. Here, he talks about his frustration at trying to land fights with Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns, Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank and latterly Roy Jones but also about the big nights and his time at the top, including the disputed losses to Little and Liles and Rocchiginai, He was 58-4 when he boxed for the last time but three of those defeats were controversial. Then came time in prison and it was a long time but he was bright and engaging, it was great to hear him in such good shape and also hear him referring to so many in the boxing community whom he has been in touch with since his 2019 release.

The battle between Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns is remembered as one of the greatest fights of all time. But in the months before the two finally collided on April 15, 1985, there was a feeling in the air that boxing was in trouble. The biggest name in the business, Sugar Ray Leonard, was retired with no logical replacement in sight, while the American Medical Association was calling for a ban on the sport. With Hagler–Hearns looking like boxing's last hurrah, promoter Bob Arum embarked on one the most audacious publicity campaigns in history, hyping the bout until the entire country was captivated. Arum's task was difficult. He'd spent years trying and failing to make Hagler a star, while Hearns was a gifted but inconsistent performer. Could Arum possibly get a memorable fight out of these two moody, unpredictable warriors? The Hagler–Hearns fight is now part of history, but The War: Hagler-Hearns and Three Rounds for the Ages (Hamilcar Publications, 2021) by Don Stradley explores the many factors behind the event, and how it helped establish what many feel was boxing's greatest era. No book, not even George Kimball's classic, Four Kings, has focused solely on this legendary fight involving two of those "Four Kings" that boxing fans have revered for their skills and willingness to take on challenges that many fighters do not take in today's boxing landscape. With additional commentary from many who were there, Stradley shows the unlikely path taken by two fighters searching for greatness. They didn't care how many punches they endured, as long as it led to stardom. When the fight was over, however, each learned that fame inflicted its own kind of damage. Paul Knepper covered the Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in 2020. Pat Mullin and Mark Radulich continue with their newest history of boxing podcast series on the Four Kings of Boxing this time focusing on Leonard vs Duran 1&2. Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Durán, billed as "The Brawl in Montreal", was a welterweight professional boxing match contested between WBC, The Ring and lineal champion Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Durán. The bout took place on June 20, 1980 at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Canada. Durán defeated Leonard via unanimous decision. Roberto Durán vs. Sugar Ray Leonard II, billed as "The Super Fight" and later popularly known as the No Más Fight, was a boxing match which took place on November 25, 1980, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, United States. It was the second of three bouts between the pair. It gained its name from the moment at the end of the eighth round when Durán turned away from Leonard towards the referee and quit by apparently saying, "No más" (Spanish for "No more").
