Rob opens the discussion by recounting a moment many athletes hope for—the tribute video. A gesture of appreciation that often comes with a mix of emotions, as it did for Robert when the Lakers offered him one. It stems from Jimmy Butler’s return to Miami – and given his impact in taking the team to the Finals, albeit without clinching the championship, the consensus seems to be a resounding "yes," with a focus on patching historical ties and community affection.   We also touch on the loss of boxing legend George Foreman, remembered not only for his prowess in the ring but also for his entrepreneurial success with the George Foreman Grill. This reflective segment prompts a look at favorite boxers, with figures like Roy Jones Jr., Mike Tyson, and Sugar Ray Leonard receiving nods for their impact on both sports and pop culture. A lively debate emerges about the challenges of securing major titles, with a particular focus on the NCAA versus NBA titles. The discussion expands to compare different sports championships, emphasizing the rigorous path and elements faced in NFL playoffs and college football.   Closing with a humorous twist, the show turns to the peculiar injuries athletes sometimes endure off the court. From the infamous incidents like Amari Stoudemire's fire extinguisher mishap to Matt Strom's packing-induced injury, it's a reminder of the unexpected challenges athletes face even in the most mundane tasks. Shaquille O’Neal's playful knife injury story rounds out this section, shedding light on the lighter side of professional sports.   00:00 Introduction and Welcome 00:44 Tribute Videos in Sports 03:20 Remembering George Foreman 04:02 Favorite Boxers Discussion 05:37 NBA vs. NCAA Titles 07:54 Hardest Titles to Win in Sports 10:58 Coach's Misconduct Incident 14:23 Softest Injuries in Sports

When Donald McRae was a young sportswriter, Hugh McIlvanney told him one night at a bar in Las Vegas that as he made a life covering boxing, “ambivalence will be your constant companion”. McRae found the romantic in boxing and particularly in boxers. He was drawn to fighters and trainers rather than promoters and advisers. His gifts as an interviewer meant that men like Tyson Fury revealed their vulnerabilities to him. But, as he writes in his new book, The Last Bell, even “the zealots grow weary”. On Free State today, Don McRae joins Dion and Joe to talk about his obsession with boxing, how he fell out of love with it and why his new book is a journey into the darkness of the ring. He speaks to about the great Belfast trainer Gerry Storey, Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran. He recalls his own father's incredible life, defying the apartheid laws in South Africa to meet the ANC in Soweto while Nelson Mandela was in jail to bring electricity to the townships. At a time of personal grief, McRae lost himself in boxing again, but in a sport that has grown increasingly ugly, is it possible to be anything but ambivalent? And what does the decline of boxing tell us about the fate of all professional sport?Free State with Joe Brolly and Dion Fanning is a Gold Hat Production in association with SwanMcG.For more on Free State: https://freestatepodcast.com/ Hosted on Acast. It's the latest editon of the recap show as host T.J. Rives and insider Dan Rafael of his Fight Freaks Unite Substack and Newsletter are back with plenty to go over from Arizona to Puerto Rico and even, Bulgaria. And, they add some fight news and great nostalgia.First, they go over Saturday's Top Rank/ESPN card from Phoneix, as Emanuel Navarrete wipes out Oscar Valdez in their rematch and retains the WBO junior lightweight title. What's the future for both? Then, Rafael Espinoza stops Robeisy Ramirez in a bizarre re-enactment of the Roberto Duran's famous "No Mas" against Sugar Ray Leonard in the Saturday rematch with Ramirez to retain the WBO featherweight title. What was really going on with Ramirez's eye and will Espinoza end up on the track to move up and fight Navarrete?Next, It's Saturday's Matchroom/DAZN card from San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Richardson Hitchins defeated Liam Paro by decision and wins IBF junior welterweight title. It was at times a dull bout, but Hitchins was clearly better. And, what's n store for him? Dan also has more on Saturday's Epic Sports/DAZN card from Sofia, Bulgaria, where heavyweight Kubrat Pulev decisioned Mahmoud Charr, for the WBA “regular” title. Then, some news, including: Canelo Alvarez spoke to the media scrum in at a restaurant opening in California and opens door to Crawford fight, and on working with Turki and a possible Jake Paul fight? Not shoicking, but Israil Madrimov is suffering from "acute bronchitis" and withdrew from the Dec 21 fight with Serheii Bohachuk, who will instead face replacement Ishmael Davis. It's expected Madrimov recover and get ready for Vergil Ortiz on Feb. 22 on another Riyadh card. Finally, it's Nostalgia as on Dec. 8 – 17 years ago Sunday – Floyd Mayweather retains lineal/WBC welterweight title by highlight-reek KO in 10th of junior welterweight champion Ricky 'Hitman" Hatton in as big a fight as there was in the era. Wildest fight week ever. 30K Brits come to Vegas and the MGM runs out of beer!  Dan was ringside for it all. Also, on Dec. 8 – 12 years ago Sunday – Juan Manuel Marquez, on verge of being stopped, scores one of greatest KOs of all time as he puts newly elected hall of famer Manny Pacquiao to sleep, face first with one shot at the end of RD 6 in their 4th and final fight. This was his only win of the series and the only result of the series that was definitive. It was the KO of the year, Fight of the Year, Fight of the decade. JD Vance's public sodomy of Walz - Weekend Recap 10-06-24

[SEGMENT 1-1] An indepth look at the debate   If I had a nickel for every time Tim Walz mentioned the burning dumpster fire Minnesota's turned into under his leadership, I'd have a down payment on a Ferrari. What a trainwreck of a debate performance for Walz. When Walz wasn't busy glossing over his hot mess of a governorship, he had the unenviable task of doing two things. First, he had to somehow trash-talk one of the most successful presidencies in American history. And second, his ammo for that? The smoldering wreckage of what's easily the worst presidency in American history—his own boss's. It was like trying to defend the Titanic while still sinking in it. Everyone who'd been paying attention already knew JD Vance was going to wipe the floor with Walz's Midwestern behind. And that beating started from the word "go." As I reflect on the debate, the term "public sodomy" comes to mind. Walz looked like he was one bad question away from asking for a smoke break, which only confirmed the rumors that the guy was sweating bullets before the debate even started. He rambled through his two-minute response, attempting to answer a question I'm not sure he even understood, but he did show us one thing: he's got the preparation skills of a last-minute book report writer. And then it was Vance's turn. JD Vance kicked things off with, “I was born to a middle-class mother.” Mystified, I swear for a second I thought he was about to parody one of Kamala Harris's cringe-inducing stump speeches. But nope. Vance was all business. He explained that his mom had struggled with drugs, that he joined the Marines, and used the GI Bill to go to Yale. [X] SB – Vance opening remarks Addiction Raised by grandmother Not exactly WEIRD was he?   Meanwhile, Walz just stood there watching as his "Midwestern mystique" got yanked away from him in one well-crafted two-minute drill.[SEGMENT 1-2] An indepth look at the debate 2   And Vance? Smooth as butter. He wasn't nervous. Not once. Every question Walz fumbled through, Vance calmly took notes (in his head!) like a kid studying for finals. And the moment Walz' lying lips stopped moving, Vance took a sledge hammer to Walz' nogging. Even more ironic is Vance crushed Walz with (1) Walz's own words, and (2) actual facts. A masterclass in debate. From Iran to immigration, guns to abortion, Vance didn't just beat Walz—he dissected him. It was like watching Sugar Ray Leonard toy with an opponent at the Olympics. Just one jab after another, until Walz was politically unrecognizable.   At this point, I had to run to Verizon because my phone was busted (don't ask, my fault). By the time I got back, CBS was wrapping up their debate coverage, and you know things went south when not one of the “journalists” had a single positive thing to say about Walz. It was all gloom, doom, and misery for the Harris-Walz campaign. When you consider how much of a dumpster fire their campaign has been so far, this debate was just another log on the bonfire. If Walz thought his week couldn't get worse, well, too bad Iran didn't wait a few more hours to launch those rockets at Israel. Maybe that could've distracted the country from the absolute annihilation he just suffered. Too late now.  [SEGMENT 1-3] An indepth look at the debate 2   Debate outcome NUMBER 1: Democrats are LIARS Holy cow did that Tim Walz get caught in his past? Did I warn you? I said the more you learn about the Democrats the less you will like them. By now you've heard a lot about this debate. And I'm fairly confident that you came to the conclusion that any HUMAN WITH A PULSE did, and that's Vance won. But he didn't just WIN! No, Vance played Trump mini-me and DESTROYED WALZ He did it in two ways: he destroyed Walz and the Democrats on Trump's record, and he then watch Walz implode TRUST Who do you think Americans trust the most?   And how do you recover from that. Remember what was said about Walz. He was the only person stupid enough to run with Harris. And now we know why. Can we just dissect this ONE clip?   [X] SB – Walz lies about China Did travel to Asia until Aug. To the folks out there that didn't get it at the top of this  [SEGMENT 1-4] An indepth look at the debate 4   Talk a lot. Get caught up in the rhetoric. Trump should have come on one of those trips. Covid. Trade wars. Trying to understand the world. Teaching, which I was good at. People don't care about LIARS   When Leftists lie, they “misspeak”?   “I was in Hong Kong, in China, and I learned a lot about what needed to be in governance.” Vance should've said “is a good soldier one who abandons his troops when the tough gets going?” “And it didn't take Trump 16 trips to get to know XiXi Ping. They understood each other from day one and Trump doesn't play.” “What else have you lied about?” And the list goes on. @LindaFritz7 He looked like a 3rd grader who got caught stealing, still Never answered the question either. Watching Walz I hear Joe Biden, but I see Don Rickles. @IslesfaninFla   Leftists have this incredible ability, when asked a serious question that they can't answer, to ramble on eloquently about some completely irrelevant and unrelated topic. @AlexC96531   I would give pretty good odds that nobody will ask him about the "mistake" of claiming military honors and rank he never earned.  Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-kevin-jackson-show--2896352/support.

The 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal will always be remembered for the perfection of Nadia Comaneci; the golden smile from Sugar Ray Leonard; the perseverance of Bruce Jenner in the decathlon; the grace of hurdler extraordinaire Edwin Moses; and the youthful exuberance of 17-year old diver Jennifer Chandler in the 3M springboard. Two years earlier, Jenni was a 15-year old kid getting ready for those games and featured in article by Sports Illustrated. She was spending the summer with her family on their farm in a small town in Alabama... her two parents and her two sisters driving everywhere for competitions that were prepping Jenni for a shot at Gold. That hard work, determination, and sacrifice from the teenager and her "Gold Medal Driver" mother put the young girl in a position to make the U.S. diving team and once she did that, her coach, Carlos de Cubas, had her ready to reach her potential when it mattered most. 50 years after that precocious 15-year old was featured in SI we talk with the Gold Medalist about how that moment shaped the rest of her life... what it was like to be a part of the Opening Ceremonies... how hearing the National Anthem still moves her to tears and how she looks back on a time in her life when for one brief moment... she was the best in the world... Jennifer Chandler, the last U.S. woman to win Olympic Gold in the 3M diving event, is engaging, thoughtful and grateful for what diving did for her and she shares her story on the Past Our Prime podcast. Grayson Man Arrested After Returning to Scene of Carjacking At Assisted Living Facility Multicultural Festival Celebrates Gwinnett's Diversity Mulberry cityhood referendum will remain on Tuesday's ballot Plus, my conversation with Lindsey Broome for the Downtown Lawrenceville series. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Grayson Man Arrested After Returning To Scene of Carjacking At Assisted Living Facility The Gwinnett County Police Department arrested Keyonne Mann, 25, of Grayson, on multiple charges including carjacking, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Mann allegedly approached a woman at an assisted living facility, brandishing a firearm, and stole her purse and keys, fleeing the scene. Police found a suspicious vehicle nearby registered to Mann. Upon his return in an Uber, he was detained, and the victim's vehicle was recovered. Anyone with information should contact the Gwinnett County Police Department or Crime Stoppers anonymously for a possible cash reward. STORY 2: Multicultural Festival Celebrates Gwinnett's Diversity Gwinnett County hosts a Multicultural Festival and County Government Open House this weekend at Gwinnett Place Mall. The event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., features cultural performances, kids' activities, and a Passport Challenge to learn about countries. A naturalization ceremony welcomes new citizens. Residents can explore county services and programs, with displays from police, fire, and emergency services. Free car seat checks are available. For details, contact Gwinnett Police Community Affairs Section at 770-513-5119 or visit GwinnettCounty.com. STORY 3: Mulberry cityhood referendum will remain on Tuesday's ballot Residents of northeast Gwinnett County will vote on creating a new city despite a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the legislation. Judge Tadia Whitner ruled the referendum would proceed, emphasizing the issue's complexity. The lawsuit will continue regardless of the vote outcome. Arguments centered on timing and legal avenues for addressing concerns post-referendum. Supporters, wearing green shirts, and opponents, in red, filled the courtroom. Opponents questioned the necessity and feasibility of cityhood, citing concerns over tax promises and service delivery. Legislators supporting the referendum expressed excitement about the democratic process. Despite the controversy, the vote will proceed as scheduled. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back   Break 2: TOM WAGES   STORY 4: Former Democratic congressman pledges support for abortion rights in Georgia Supreme Court bid In a rare contentious Georgia Supreme Court race, candidate John Barrow emphasizes reproductive rights, contrasting with incumbent Justice Andrew Pinson. Barrow's campaign focuses on protecting abortion rights, drawing support from advocacy groups like Planned Parenthood. Pinson's campaign argues against Barrow's stance, accusing him of violating judicial ethics by pledging to rule on specific issues. Barrow defends his position, stating he's not pre-judging cases but expressing his legal interpretation. Despite judicial ethics concerns, legal experts note that Georgia's judicial election system allows candidates to articulate their judicial philosophies to voters. STORY 5: Former Augusta National employee admits stealing Masters merchandise Richard Brendan Globensky, a former Augusta National Golf Club employee, pleaded guilty to stealing millions of dollars' worth of Masters golf tournament merchandise and memorabilia. He admitted to the thefts spanning from 2009 to 2022 while working as a warehouse assistant. Stolen items included shirts, hats, flags, watches, and historically significant Green Jackets and documents. Globensky sold the items to an online broker in Florida, totaling around $5.6 million. He faces up to 10 years in federal prison and will be sentenced on October 29.
