When Donald McRae was a young sportswriter, Hugh McIlvanney told him one night at a bar in Las Vegas that as he made a life covering boxing, “ambivalence will be your constant companion”. McRae found the romantic in boxing and particularly in boxers. He was drawn to fighters and trainers rather than promoters and advisers. His gifts as an interviewer meant that men like Tyson Fury revealed their vulnerabilities to him. But, as he writes in his new book, The Last Bell, even “the zealots grow weary”. On Free State today, Don McRae joins Dion and Joe to talk about his obsession with boxing, how he fell out of love with it and why his new book is a journey into the darkness of the ring. He speaks to about the great Belfast trainer Gerry Storey, Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran. He recalls his own father's incredible life, defying the apartheid laws in South Africa to meet the ANC in Soweto while Nelson Mandela was in jail to bring electricity to the townships. At a time of personal grief, McRae lost himself in boxing again, but in a sport that has grown increasingly ugly, is it possible to be anything but ambivalent? And what does the decline of boxing tell us about the fate of all professional sport?Free State with Joe Brolly and Dion Fanning is a Gold Hat Production in association with SwanMcG.For more on Free State: https://freestatepodcast.com/ Hosted on Acast. The Rocky Road hits its 200th episode during Paddy's week – so who better to have on than the King of New York himself, Ireland's John Duddy. He had a famous fan in Jake LaMotta and later worked closely with Robert DeNiro, who had starred as The Bronx Bull in Martin Scorsese's epic Raging Bull back in 1980. Even today he's boxing royalty in the Big Apple but John Duddy is also a son of Derry and an Irish boxing cult hero, someone who helped popularise professional boxing in the early noughties, leading to a wave of up and coming fighters to follow their dreams either at home or across the pond. Show that you can become a big name in Dublin and you could be labelled ‘the next Bernard Dunne'. Show that you're ready to break the Big Apple and you might, you just might, be labelled ‘the next John Duddy'. The Derry Destroyer fought nine times at Madison Square Garden between 2005 and 2010 – winning them all – and lost just twice in a 31-fight career. At one stage he was right in the mix to fight for the middleweight championship of the world – which LaMotta held between 1949 and 1951 – but boxing had other plans for him. John wrapped up his career in 2011 when he realised his hunger had dimmed, cancelling an all-Irish match-up with Andy Lee, and, bitten by the acting bug, he's never looked back. He's still involved in the sport to this day, spearheading a new programme with the Moving Brains Foundation which put on 54 two-hour sessions for people with Parkinsons Disease in 2024 – and continues to grow and grow. And he is also coaching at Trinity Boxing in New York City, a stone's throw from the World Trade Centre, with the hope of one day opening his own gym. In Part 1, we look back at John's early years in the Irish amateur ranks, his determination to unseat Michael Roche as light-middleweight champ and the Corkman's incredible gesture before he finally did, his boxing pals who made it all so enjoyable, and hunkering down to avoid a hurricane in Cuba during a training camp. We also discuss the links in the chain that go from his early life until now – his uncle Jackie, his dad Michael, Charlie Nash, Ken Buchanan, Barry McGuigan and Roberto Duran. This is the ultimate Rocky story. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's the latest editon of the recap show as host T.J. Rives and insider Dan Rafael of his Fight Freaks Unite Substack and Newsletter are back with plenty to go over from Arizona to Puerto Rico and even, Bulgaria. And, they add some fight news and great nostalgia.First, they go over Saturday's Top Rank/ESPN card from Phoneix, as Emanuel Navarrete wipes out Oscar Valdez in their rematch and retains the WBO junior lightweight title. What's the future for both? Then, Rafael Espinoza stops Robeisy Ramirez in a bizarre re-enactment of the Roberto Duran's famous "No Mas" against Sugar Ray Leonard in the Saturday rematch with Ramirez to retain the WBO featherweight title. What was really going on with Ramirez's eye and will Espinoza end up on the track to move up and fight Navarrete?Next, It's Saturday's Matchroom/DAZN card from San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Richardson Hitchins defeated Liam Paro by decision and wins IBF junior welterweight title. It was at times a dull bout, but Hitchins was clearly better. And, what's n store for him? Dan also has more on Saturday's Epic Sports/DAZN card from Sofia, Bulgaria, where heavyweight Kubrat Pulev decisioned Mahmoud Charr, for the WBA “regular” title. Then, some news, including: Canelo Alvarez spoke to the media scrum in at a restaurant opening in California and opens door to Crawford fight, and on working with Turki and a possible Jake Paul fight? Not shoicking, but Israil Madrimov is suffering from "acute bronchitis" and withdrew from the Dec 21 fight with Serheii Bohachuk, who will instead face replacement Ishmael Davis. It's expected Madrimov recover and get ready for Vergil Ortiz on Feb. 22 on another Riyadh card. Finally, it's Nostalgia as on Dec. 8 – 17 years ago Sunday – Floyd Mayweather retains lineal/WBC welterweight title by highlight-reek KO in 10th of junior welterweight champion Ricky 'Hitman" Hatton in as big a fight as there was in the era. Wildest fight week ever. 30K Brits come to Vegas and the MGM runs out of beer! Dan was ringside for it all. Also, on Dec. 8 – 12 years ago Sunday – Juan Manuel Marquez, on verge of being stopped, scores one of greatest KOs of all time as he puts newly elected hall of famer Manny Pacquiao to sleep, face first with one shot at the end of RD 6 in their 4th and final fight. This was his only win of the series and the only result of the series that was definitive. It was the KO of the year, Fight of the Year, Fight of the decade. In this video I discuss Anthony Joshua's latest loss in the boxing ring. As an avid boxing fan, watching fights for the past forty years, I've witnessed multiple great decades of prize fighting, from Muhammed Ali and Mike Tyson, to Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns, alongside the all time greats such as Roy Jones Jr, Evander Holyfield, Floyyd Mayweather, James Tony, Bernard Hopkins, Manny Pacquiao, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Nigel Benn, Larry Holmes, George Foreman, Nassem Hamed, Gennady Golovkin, Riddick Bowe, Oscar DeLaHoya, Canelo Alverez, Terence Crawford and most recently Dimitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev, whom face of soon for the undisputed Light Heavyweight crown. Obviously there are numerous other fighters, not mentioned here, of which my list could go on for at least another twenty names or so. Over the past 12 years, the boxing world has witnessed one of the most hyped up fighters ever, being Anthony Joshua, or AJ to some. A clever strategy has been forged between AJ and his promoter Eddie Hearn to essentially gain money and fame from both boxing fans and casual fans alike, working with marketing / media outlets to borderline force AJ upon the public, with his personality and public image. Whilst the fight game is not for the faint hearted, it found it's poster man in AJ and subsequently the fame and riches followed, but to a keen boxing fan, the hype train was and still is thriving.....until now. Last week, upcoming heavyweight Daniel Dubois, a 27 year old Londoner, claimed victory over AJ at a sold out Wembley Stadium, with a devastating five round demolition, putting AJ to the canvas four times, the referee didn't count one knockdown, otherwise the records would show five in total. Watching the fight three times has finally proved to me, that Anthony Joshua is now a spent force, as far as elite boxing goes, with little to zero punch resistance, poor defensive skills, sub standard ring craft and more telling than anything else, a look of constant bewilderment, whilst vocalizing practiced lines of quasi wisdom and sketchy 'tough guy' statements. The boxing world has seen far too many fighters fall victim to greedy promoters, goading and persuading them to 'roll the dice' once more, with an eye on cashing in on the fighters dwindling popularity, in the knowledge the pugilist inn question could face varying degrees of brain damage, slurred speech, organ failure, impaired vision, depression or worse. History has shown us time and time again, the majority of boxers acquire chronic injuries and or physiological breakdown, as the training itself can give rise to a numerous unwanted disorders. With this in mind, AJ should walk away form the square circle of combat and enjoy the rewards bestowed upon him, whilst his health is intact, allowing for younger, hungrier athletes to join the gravy train, hoping for their slice of the pie. Ultimately, it's down to the fighter, weather he continues or not, doctors orders and boxing athletic commission's notwithstanding and as such, my fears are AJ will go 'once more into the fray' with delusions of grandeur orbiting his army of sycophants, hands outstretched. Good luck sir and stay well.....a boxing fan. Watch the full video here on YouTube or listen on Spotify, Amazon Music or Apple Podcasts. It was a sllllooooowww weekend of action in the ring, as only "the name" of Floyd Mayweather registered in an exhibition in Mexico. But, we're ready to go over that card, hear from rising super middleweight contender Diego Pacheco and more on the newest "Fight Freaks Unite Recap Podcast."Host T.J. Rives is back with "the birthday guy," Dan Rafael of BigFightWeekend.com to go over things. That includes the silliness of the Mayweather card and his "win" over John Gotti III headlining a PPV. And, is there any real market left for Mayweather to keep fighting these stupid fights? Then, speaking of legit, unbeaten California native Diego Pacheco returns for his fourth fight in just over a year, as headlines the Matchroom show in Carson, CA, Saturday night fighting vetern Maciej Sulecki in the headliner. However, you don't have to wait for fight week to hear from the star in the making, as Pacheco joins Dan for a one on one conversation with his goals in the short term, too.Next, there's news on whether Jaron "Boots" Ennis can make a welterweight unification title fight before an IBF deadline this week that would possibly see him stripped of his belt? The absurdity of the situation is revisited and the name of Brian Norman (the WBO title holder) will become bigger, too? There's news on Keyshawn Davis headlining for Top Rank this Fall and what British heavyweight rising star has gotten a new promo deal from Frank Warren and Queesberry too? Finally, we close with nostalgia on the 26th anniversary of Roberto Duran's last title challenge and why it was painful to see in a Showtime main event. However, what was more memorable was the co-feature bout that night, where fellow legend Bernard Hopkins ended up being tossed from the ring, literally, in a bizarre moemnt that ended his title fight in a no-contest. Dan has the reminiscing. And, there's also a look back at the storied career of Diego "Chco" Corrales, who would have been 47 years old Sunday. Corrales owns arguably the most famous one round rally TKO in a championship fight ever deeating Jose Luis Castillo. 2-24-2024 Passed Ball Show. John spends this program talking about the Las Vegas Raiders Quarterback situation going into next season. He believes the team should take one of the first round QB's in this year's draft and wonders whether they should trade up for the number one overall pick to select Caleb Williams out of USC. The Raiders have options to move up from 13 overall, where if they cannot secure the number one pick, possibilities to trade up exist at 3, 4, and 5 which could set them up to get Jalen Daniels or JJ McCarthy. John believes Mets POBO (David Stearns) has officially decided to punt the 2024 Mets baseball season because of his answer to Ace pitcher Kodai Senga being out to start the season being "next man up." John contemplates his move as to how to "fan" for the 2024 Mets season. During today's #savingsportshistory segment, John talks about Smoky Joe Wood, USA/ Finland of 1980, Wayne Gretzky, Roberto Duran, and the USA Gold Medal Hockey team of 2002, while also mentioning Honus Wagner, Eddie Murray, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Eddie Plank, and Tony Conigliaro.
We're saluting Muhammad Ali on his 82nd birthday with a compilation of stories told on Press Box Access by sportswriters who crossed paths with The Greatest. Dave Kindred, Jerry Izenberg and other veteran scribes share their personal memories of Ali going as far back as 1960. They put us ringside at Ali's greatest fights such as “The Rumble in the Jungle” and “The Thrilla in Manila.” They take us on trains, into hotel rooms, and onto the banks of Africa's Congo River. We even go to the circus with the heavyweight champ and world-renowned activist and humanitarian. Enjoy our treasure trove of Ali tales. Dave Kindred, on my Mount Rushmore of sportswriters, covered 17 of Ali's fights, dating back to when he wrote for The Courier-Journal in the champ's hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. Jerry Izenberg, who began his amazing journalism career in 1951, covered more of Ali's fights than any sportswriter, including epic bouts with Joe Frazier and George Foreman that live on in boxing history. Tom Archdeacon has covered more than 200 fights as a columnist and honored boxing writer in Ohio and Florida, and he not only sat ringside at Ali's final three bouts but also went to the circus with him. Tim Smith covered the fight game for many years at The New York Times, New York Daily News, and Cincinnati Enquirer, and he now works for Haymon Sports, a boxing management company. Thom Loverro, sports columnist at The Washington Times and an honored boxing writer, first met Ali as a young reporter visiting training camp in the late 1970s. Vito Stellino is best known as a longtime NFL writer, but he was ringside at Madison Square Garden in 1971 as a reporter covering the legendary Ali-Frazier I. Mary Schmitt Boyer puts us in Atlanta, Georgia on the night when Ali lit the Olympic torch, providing her a most treasured memory of the many Olympics that she covered. George Diaz had encounters with Ali as a longtime Florida boxing writer, and he's also the ghostwriter of legendary fighter Roberto Duran's autobiography, “I Am Duran.” Learn more about your ad choices. Today, I have a conversation with the legendary Burt Watson who is known in the boxing and MMA community. Burt's rise in the boxing business started when he became the business manager for his close friend, Smoken' Joe Frazier. It didn't take long for Burt to become recognized for his managerial and organizational skills. He quickly became one of the industry's most sought-after event coordinators. He has worked of course, Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali Larry Holmes, George Foreman, and Ken Norton, Mike Tyson, Oscar De La Hoya, Sugar Ray Leaonard, Roberto Duran, Julio Chavez, Roy Jones, and when I say the list goes on...believe me ….it goes on! In 2021 Burt joined Bellator MMA- where he inspires and motivates fighters to give their best effort in the ring, cage, and in life. Burt also makes time to share his energy, enthusiasm, and his story about his prostate cancer journey-a fight he never thought he would have to take on. He's made it part of his life's mission to educate men and their families about the disease, so that men won't have to take on a fight against an opponent they know nothing about. Burt and I caught up to talk about life, decision making, and life's purpose.
CHRIS EUBANK JR breathed new life into his eventful career when he stopped Liam Smith in their rematch in Manchester, in the same arena where Smith stopped Eubank just eight months ago.The performance from Eubank was hard to fault, there was new patience and intelligence mixed with spite. Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts
Forty years ago, the boxer Roberto Duran famously said, “No mas.” Translated from Spanish, it means, “no more.” Sugar Ray Leonard was bombarding him with too many punches to handle. The flood of data and the incredible size of data stores in the federal government is causing the federal government to examine how to store and categorize data more efficiently. We could be reaching the point where federal agencies say, “No mas.” Today's interview with Chris Brown from Immuta offers a solution: federated governance. This is a decentralized approach to ingesting data where tags can be automatically added, and data is classified by attribute-based access control. During the interview, Chris talks about policy management through what is called mesh architecture. Essentially, it is a method that is cloud agnostic and allows for scalability and reliability that today's data stores can't provide. Most readers know about the federal data strategy as recommended by the Data Act and the Evidence-based Policy Act. They encourage something called “self-service analytics.” This means that a domain expert can retrieve data and derive insight from it without having to engage with information technology experts. Immuta's proprietary method originated with the company founders working with people in the Intelligence Community. Their challenge was sharing information about threats without compromising sensitive data. Their approach allowed for the automation of tags that could provide for the much-desired collaboration without revealing details that weren't appropriate for consumption outside a specific realm. Roberto Duran Jr. understands this better than anyone, and he has made a conscious effort to prioritize his family while still pursuing his dreams. Like many of us here reading this R.D.J. will share with us the insane obstacles he's come face to face with in his life, and exactly how he has maneuvered and adjusted himself so he could persevere. He has used his strength and determination to overcome challenges and become a champion. He understands that success doesn't come easy, and he has worked hard to achieve his goals. FINDING A BALANCE! Now as an adult, he has found a balance in his life. He understands the importance of family, and he has made a conscious effort to prioritize his family while still pursuing his dreams. He understands that success is not just about reaching your goals; it is also about finding balance in your life. Balance is an important part of becoming a champion. You have to be able to find a balance between your goals and your personal life. With the right balance, you can become your own champion. For me to say that Roberto Duran Jr. has been through a lot in his life would be an understatement, because the situations he found himself in over the years would be hard to imagine for anyone who hasn't grown up with an absent parent who is also a huge superstar. Even after all of this R.D.J has clearly come out stronger for it. He has faced emotional and physical challenges and has emerged with a newfound strength. He has used this strength to become a champion in his own right. The stories that are shared in this interview are the ones any Hollywood director would turn into a new-age ROCKY movie. In my eyes, Roberto Duran JR is now slowly approaching what id consider the blossoming of a heartfelt, skin-chilling climax that will either fall on one side of the fence or the other. On one side the future may very well lead to Duran JR making it to the spotlight fight for the championship as his father attends for the very 1st time in his sons' career and win or lose there will for sure be that classic "ADRIANE" moment for the two. On the other side of the fence, Duran Jr gets lost in the smoke of life, losing his passion and resting his gloves by the open door that mirrors abandoned glory as his father's voice echoes in his mind "NO MAS". Sadly this b side of the fence is a tale as old as time itself so we all must now sit and watch at the edge of our seats and witness one of God's very own tales that define humanity and the meaning of one's life. - EVil Eddie (Edward Villecco JR) Learn more about your ad choices.
