The Software Process and Measurement Cast 821 features our interview with Alex Natskovich. We talk about the attributes of a leader when building a business but even more importantly learning to be a leader. Success requires knowing how to handle the transitions. Alex's Bio Alex is a seasoned engineering leader and CEO. Born in Belarus, he harbored a lifelong dream of becoming an engineer. After graduating from university, he moved to the USA. During the initial years, he resided in New York, working as a software engineer in various companies. One of the most notable was the startup Conductor, where he joined as the 5th employee. It has now evolved into the leading global SEO and content intelligence platform. During his tenure there, Alex was responsible for building and maintaining an industry-leading link-building system. Simultaneously, he embarked on building his own company, MEV (named after the mega-electron-volt) – a strategic software development partner for fast-growing companies. Afterward, he decided to settle in the Bay Area. While at the helm of his company, he assisted esteemed companies such as Cartier, Novo Nordisk, Daiichi Sankyo, and Avadel in overcoming complex business challenges through software solutions. Additionally, he aided numerous startups in developing stable and scalable digital products, making them attractive for acquisition. Alex is passionate about empowering businesses with the right technology. He firmly believes in the power of teams. Building a high-performing team, in his view, necessitates being open-minded and always striving to thoroughly understand the team's objectives and needs for success. This solution-oriented mindset and team focus form the cornerstone of his company. Website: LinkedIn: Email: Learn To Tame Your Work Intake Beast! Work Intake Summer Camp is in session! Over the last two decades, millions of individual investors worldwide set up brokerage accounts to manage their own portfolios. However, most of them took up the challenge with flawed trading strategies, or with no strategy at all. Brokers’ own statistics show that most individual investors lose money. Clearly, they need a more disciplined, strategic approach to managing their portfolios. Trend following could be the best strategy to fit the bill. Demonstrably, market trends are the most powerful drivers of investment performance and the strategy of trend following has proven as the best way to invest profitably for the long haul. Alex Krainer seeks to explain trends and trend following, to put the challenge of investing in its proper context, and to offer a clear understanding of the key challenges and pitfalls facing investors. He covers the basic tools and methods of trend following, structuring the curriculum in its correct theoretical and practical framework to better equip investors to navigate the markets profitably, with confidence and peace of mind. Abstract of the talk… Observability systems are typically a collection of tools that cover the three pillars of logs, metrics and tracing. These enable skilled engineers to correlate telemetry insights to perform data-driven diagnostics and rectify degraded services. In this talk, I discuss how over the course of three years, I have worked towards removing the built-in gatekeeping that comes with creating monitoring solutions and enabling them to work for an entire organisation. We shine a light on the overlooked developer community that interact with Observability but does not necessarily hail from SRE disciplines. Engaging with anecdotes from my past and illustrating the inherent bar to success that comes with connecting multiple tools together and the context that requires to achieve results. With years of experience working to improve adoption and create consumer-friendly facades for tools such as Grafana, Prometheus and Jaeger; I draw upon my background within large financial institutions and how building engaging and simplified DX can compel and excite engineers to work with observability. Bio… Alex works as both a contributor and end-user of cloud-native technology. He spends his work-time translating tooling, practices and behaviours into generators of strategic value and positive cultural change. His passion is to create positive engineering cultures that enable inclusivity and diversity as a core attribute rather than a vague goal. Enabling engineers to build more reliable services through shared accountability, observability and automation of toil. He has worked at companies such as JPMorgan, American Express, Microsoft, British Sky Broadcasting.
On today’s episode I brought Alex Grant on the show because she is a great friend of mine and an awesome human being! Alex and I are soul family and resonate on many levels - which you will hear in this conversation! Alex is so self aware and has a background in gymnastics and is clearly able to cultivate how the relationship to her body has changed over time. As a former Chiropractor who has witnessed people’s relationships to their bodies in real time, I knew Alex was the perfect person to co-create this conversation with me to bring our collective knowledge and wisdom to the masses. This conversation was so epic for many reasons, but mainly because we share wisdom from our life experiences that just aren’t available on google. I highly suggest you grab a notebook and pen for this one because we give you so many tips/prompts for self reflection that will honestly make your life easier (especially in the pandemic). We also have a discussion about a mindfulness group that Alex hosted that I was able to participate in. It had a massive influence on me and changed how I was able to thrive during the pandemic. If you are interested, she is running the program online and details to register are below! This is seriously one of my favourite things to talk about and I know you will glean multiple gems from this one! During this episode we discuss: How movement can be an active meditation Suppression of physical pain - the short and long term consequences How to start communicating with your body; not avoiding ‘tough’ conversations Why we condemn our bodies instead of approach with curiosity How we become disconnected from the process/experience and focus on outcomes (what the real life consequences are) Who are you being while you are doing what you’re doing? Is this life giving or soul sucking? Are you sitting in a stinky shitty diaper? (gross but I’m not sorry for asking) The body as your experience vessel! The value of contrast when spiralling vs transcending emotions Alex gives a great tip to identify if a thought is a story and how to address it My experience as a participant in Alex’s Mindfulness Group Alex's Bio: Alex is a thought leader and space holder. As a mindfulness facilitator for the curious humans of the world, her goal is to help people live their truth and deepen their connections to themselves and those closest to them. As a student of life, she weaves the affirming philosophy that life unfolds as we do. Alex was a former NCAA all round athlete, mindset coach and strength trainer. She has worked with thousands of students and athletes across Canada speaking on resilience and self identity. Her work has impacted over 10,000 people of all ages including varsity athletes, corporate executives, women's groups, and young entrepreneurs. She believes when we get curious about who we are, we open the door for deeper and more fulfilling connections. Build a website in just 5 days (even if you're not techie) at www.free5daywebsitechallenge.com Already have a website? Take the Free "Jumpstart Your Website Traffic" marketing mini-course at www.jumpstartyourwebsitetraffic.com Leave a Review! My guest today is Alex Nerney of CreateandGo.com. In 2016, after side hustling on their blog for about a year, Alex and his girlfriend Lauren McManus decided to go all in on themselves. They sold everything they owned, quit their full time jobs, and moved in with Alex’s dad in Seattle and became full time bloggers. So when I heard about Create and Go, I was on Alex and Lauren’s website, reading their story on their about page, which by the way, guys, is a really good story and I’ll link up that page in the show notes, there were two things that really stood out to me and made me want to invite them on the show: The first thing was this quote from the story: “We were blessed and plenty thankful for what we had, but there was one feeling we couldn’t escape. Is this really it? Really… Is this really IT??? Yeah, getting drunk on the weekends when you’re young is fun and who doesn’t love going to the movies for the bajillionth time in your life, but we couldn’t escape the feeling there had to be more to life than this.” And if you guys have listened to this podcast for awhile, you know that the exact same thing happened to me when I was sitting at my desk at my day job one day, this feeling of dread just washed over me and I was like, “Is this IT? Is this really all there is?” And so I felt an instant connection to their story. The second thing that stood to me (aside from the fact that Alex and Lauren grew their online business to over $100,000 a month - yes, a month - over the course of span of 2 years) is that they share in detail on their About page every single failure and misstep along the way. So I’m gonna stop here and let Alex tell you the full story in our interview, but what I really want you to take away from this interview is that you gotta try a lot of different things, you gotta make mistakes and learn from them and try something new, and just never stop because you eventually will find your way, just like Alex and Lauren did. So in today’s episode, we’re talking about: How Alex and Lauren quit their day jobs and went all in to run their health and wellness blog full time How Alex and Lauren leveraged Pinterest to gain traffic to their blog What content does best on Pinterest What common themes Alex sees that separates the people that become successful from the ones who flop The exact steps they took to monetize their first blog, Avocadu.com How Alex and Lauren build trust with their audience by marketing towards deeper values The importance of being honest with your audience Alex’s advice for starting a YouTube channel Alex’s belief that he had to change about himself My favorite quotes from Alex: “If people are telling you that you work too hard, you are probably on the right track.” “You have to give up things that are good for something greater.” “Growth in anything requires an obnoxious amount of effort.” “If you feel like you are a hard worker but you are wondering why you are spinning your wheels, these are solutions for you. These are real solutions that literally just take a hustler’s mindset and stickability.” Links mentioned in this episode: About Alex and Lauren Digital Marketer.com https://createandgo.com/ https://createandgo.com/how-to-start-a-blog/ https://createandgo.com/how-to-make-money-blogging/ https://courses.createandgo.com/p/launch-your-blog Bio: Alex is the founder of Create and Go, an online blog that teaches others how to start a blog and eventually make money blogging. Alex and his partner Lauren quit their jobs, sold almost everything they owned and went all-in blogging. Within their first year, they made $103,000 blogging. By year three, they are currently making over $100,000 per month online! And the best thing is Alex and his partner Lauren live their life completely on their terms! What do you do when your dreams get crushed? On today's episode, Alex Hult shares his awesome story of business and life success. He tells us how he rose from a halted hockey career and became a legendary restaurateur. “My mind was still thinking as fast, everything else was going as fast, but my body couldn't just handle the speed that I wanted to go.” - Alex Hult Three Things We Learned Alex's promising hockey career Hockey has been a gigantic part of his life. Growing up in Sweden, Alex was one of the youngest players in the elite league and was ranked second in the country. With a bright career ahead of him, the San Jose Sharks eventually drafted him in 2003. The injury that stilted everything Alex Hult got injured the summer right after he got drafted by the Sharks while in a playoff as part of the Swedish team versus Russia. He prematurely got back in the ice a month after the injury. He was late to realize that injury took six to nine months of rehabilitation, and his career took a turn for the worse. Becoming a restaurateur After he got married, Alex gave thought to what he wanted to do and the restaurant business sounded fun, so he opened up HULT'S in 2013. On the fourth year of the restaurant, he opened the first Flights location which took off like crazy. At Flights, they serve everything from drinks to food in three different ways. They give good value to their customers and this commitment shows in how they are full every single day. The massive success birthed a decision to spice things up and remodel the old HULT'S location to become another branch for Flights. Since then, Flights have become one of the most reputable restaurants giving their customers a whole new experience. Bio: Alex is a Swedish native drafted in 2003 in the eighth round by the San Jose Sharks of the NHL. After a knee injury sidelined his career in hockey, he retired in 2009 after stints in the Swedish and European hockey leagues. Alex met his wife, Sarah, who was Miss Nevada 2011 while pursuing a professional career in cards in Las Vegas. The couple married in 2013 and returned to the Alameda CA area where Sarah is from.
