This past November, Eugene and I attended the 2023 PASS Data Community Summit (aka PASS Summit) in Seattle, while Kevin headed down to Orlando for the Microsoft Live! 360 event in Orlando. Having no remote option this year was fine for us, as it was great to reconnect with our friends and colleagues in the data community, as well as get updates live and in-person from Microsoft on all the new features rolling out. The focus of both conferences was eerily similar and in this episode we discuss our experiences along with a picture of what 2024 will look like. Azure services continue to be a focus and Fabric is included in that space; however, I was surprised at the number of Postgres sessions. In fact, PostGres got a whopping 30 minutes out the 90-minute Microsoft keynote. AI continued to be peppered in the conversation and Kevin gives us his take on where some of this is going. As a side reference, if you are interested in learning more about large language models, check out this video by Andrej Karpathy. The show notes for today's episode can be found at Episode 271: PASS Summit 2023 Wrap-Up. Have fun on the SQL Trail!
In this episode, the trio try to condense the news from PASS Summit and Microsoft Ignite to a 30-ish minute long conversation. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode Warner is joined by Marcelo Adade to discuss the latest announcements from the PASS Data Summit and Microsoft Ignite! These include the general availability of Microsoft Fabric, new GenAI capabilities, new cloud integrations, new AI models, new AI SDKs and more!
Andy is speaking at PASS Summit in Seattle and Frank is speaking at the Red Hat Government Symposium in Washtington, DC.Two hosts. Two Coasts. One Podcast!
I was lucky enough to attend the very first PASS Summit in 1999. It was a brand new event, and while not overly large, it was busy and crowded in the basement of a Chicago Loop hotel. I had the chance to meet Kalen Delaney there and ask her a question. That was the highlight of the trip, but I also learned a lot about SQL Server 6.5 and 7 there, spending all the time I could in sessions and hanging out after each one listening to the questions others asked the speakers. Since then, I have been lucky enough to go to most of the Summits. The event has changed a bit, and I look forward to going to see friends each year and re-connect with them. I've also loved meeting new people, often those I've corresponded with online. Each event has been memorable and exhausting at the same time. It's a busy week, and I can sometimes feel overwhelmed. However, it's always felt like it was worth the trip. Read the rest of Looking Forward to the PASS Data Community Summit 2023

Andy is currently in Seattle attending the PASS Summit and I will be headed to AWS re:Invent this year!
The PASS Summit has been an annual event for a lot of my career. I attended the first one in 1999 and most of the rest through the years. After last year's virtual Summit, I was concerned that we wouldn't have an annual event where the most, brightest, and friendliest data platform people came together. Redgate purchased the assets out of the PASS bankruptcy and has committed to future Summits. This year's Summit is virtual, and more importantly... In this Data Point, Andy talks to us outside of a Waffle House in Raleigh about announcements from Ignite and his upcoming trip to the PASS Summit. Transcript (experimental) Hey all this is Andy an this is the beginning. Well, not really. It’s kind of in the middle of my trip to PASS Summit, 2019 looking forward to getting out to Seattle, catching up with old friends, making new friends. And we’re in my Redgate shirt today friend of Redgate Awesome company. Love you guys looking forward to seeing you all too. And I am in Raleigh. I am at Waffle House. No one who knows me will be surprised by that. And. I’m going to grab a quick bite to eat catch the first flight. And I’ve gotta connect and of course, every now and then I Get Lucky and get a direct flight from RDU to Seattle but exciting news out of ignite yesterday. If you didn’t get a chance to watch those keynotes. You can watch him on YouTube. They’re all over such a an the crew dropped a bunch of announcements about new cool tech coming out very impressed. I was very impressed by a lot of what I saw there. SQL Azure SQL, DW has been rebranded that was a big one. Just looking at this whole approach where they seem to be using the technology that they built to stack new technology on Top of it absolutely love that approach. This is the little individual units of technology are like design patterns and seeing them put those design patterns together in these little chunks together. I liken it to Legos. And they built the you know the bottom layers already and now they’re building on Top of that it’s pretty cool stuff. And you know, there’s a lot of marketing mix in their marketing is not a bad thing, but from a technology standpoint if it does any of what they said it does it still pretty good leap forward an I’m sure that it does it probably does more than they mentioned so as I head out this morning to breakfast. I hope all of you are having a great day. If you can’t make it just passed summit. There’s past TV and they’ll be showing the key notes from the past summit, you can watch the ignite. Keynotes as well, and it’s going to be a neat week, Anna in technology, so you’ll be good.

While Andy and Tim are living it on at the PASS Summit in Seattle, Frank was at the University of Virginia today running a hands-on-lab (https://github.com/Microsoft/computerscience/tree/master/Labs/Deep%20Learning/200%20-%20Machine%20Learning%20in%20Python) showing off the basics of the data science process: ingestion, processing, analysis, and visualization. #2Hosts2Coasts

Every few years, or every year now, we see a new version of SQL Server proclaimed as the best ever. A few weeks ago, I saw a number of people leaving hte MVP Summit, rating it as the best ever summit. At SQL Bits or the PASS Summit every year, there's no shortage of people posting about that event being the best conference. Is this a human view, that the latest one is often the best one ever if we enjoyed it? Perhaps we learn something and we're excited about the latest new SQL thing and so we're excited to proclaim it the best? Read the rest of The Best Ever

After having attended PASS Summit and seeing all the new features coming it out, it can be very easy to overlook the basics--they are boring. These features have been around forever. This may be true, but they still play an important role and ignoring them won't help get you those fancy new features any time soon. In this episode, our topic is index maintenance, with an emphasis on what has changed or what might change. Is the query store feature going to impact the way we maintain our indexes? We invite one our favorite guests, Sean McCown back to talk with us and give some of his thoughts. The show notes from today's episode can be found at http://sqldatapartners.com/2017/11/24/index-maintenance. Have fun on the SQL Trail!

Have you ever had a week without a Wednesday? Me neither, so for this episode, we recap our experience at PASS Summit and talk about all the amazing compañeros we met and give some thoughts around our very first meetup. It was so much fun to meet everyone and both Steve and I gave sessions, which was a great experience--and a first for me. One, we both realized after the fact is, we are not good at social media or taking pictures! We apologize we don't have a bit more to share on that front, but hey--we do have faces for radio. The show notes from today's episode can be found at http://sqldatapartners.com/2017/11/15/episode-117-pass-summit-retrospective/. Have fun on the SQL Trail!
The twentyfifth episode is up! This one will have to be called the “PASS recap” as we for once didn’t come up with a quirky name! We talk to Gail Shaw about data, in all its shapes and sizes. Gail is a 10 year Microsoft MVP, and has tamed many a database in her career and shares some great insights with us. Chantal, Kenneth & Len talk data with Gail Shaw. From Gail's first 8086 PC, dual majoring in physics & computer science and printed Oracle error codes we join Gail on her journey into the realm SQL Server and how she's conquered it. We get some advice for squeezing a little more performance out of your production database, which might be more obvious than you'd think! Ever wondered about SQL Server on Linux? Gail has some great insights as to why Microsoft might gone down that route. We all take stock of Microsoft's great recent contributions to the open-source, and the efforts to liberate their tools from their operating systems. We venture into the world of big data, cautiously, while clarifying some terms and distinguishing big data from just "a lot of data". Thinking of big data in terms of analytics help focus the discussions and breaks big data up into layers. The consequences of incorrect medical diagnostics even came up! Guy is back from a one month trip in the United States, and we're back with another show of SQL Server Radio. In this show, we talk about a few of our upcoming speaking gigs (PASS Summit and SQL Server Days in Belgium), about File-Snapshot backups in SQL Server 2016, about triggers in DB2, SQL Server 2016 CU1, about where to spend your thinking time, and more.
We start to warm up the engines towards PASS Summit, which will take place in Seattle at the end of October. Before the summit, we will host a few speakers to talk about their sessions and share some of the stuff you can expect to hear. In this show, we have Bradley Ball (blog | twitter), Data Platform Management Lead at Pragmatic Works. Among other topics, we talk to Bradley about: What you can expect to hear in Bradley’s PASS Summit precon and session Data architecture What is Microsoft APS and what’s important when working with it How Azure SQL Datawarehouse took the APS idea a step further Message queuing Bradley’s military career Items mentioned in the show: Bradley’s PASS Summit session: Indexing Internals for Developers and DBAs Bradley’s PASS Summit precon: Optimize “All Data” with a Modern Data Warehouse Solution Jason Strate – sp_IndexAnalysis We also talk about some weird meanings of the acronym “APS”. About Bradley Bradley Ball is a SQL Server MVP with about 15 years of IT experience. Bradley spent 8 years working as a defense contractor for clients such as the U.S. Army and The Executive Office of the President of the United States. He is the data platform management lead with Pragmatic Works and a Microsoft VTSP. He has presented at SQLSaturday, SSUGs, SQLRally, DevConnections, SQLBits, SQL Live 360, and PASS Summit. Bradley can be found blogging at http://www.SQLBalls.com.
A few months ago we hosted Sean McCown for a talk about indexing tips and backup performance. On this show, we have Sean again.
