Physical road infrastructure such as pavement markings and signals may have an important role to play to support the uptake of automated vehicles (AVs). Austroads has recently completed a project to provide road agencies with clear advice on investing in physical infrastructure to support the operation of AVs. This webinar, presented by Andrew Somers, Simon Xue and Elnaz Irannezhad, provides a detailed overview of the advice that addresses which infrastructure types should be prioritised for investment, as well as the timing and scale for that investment. The advice has been developed against a backdrop of significant uncertainty around the future of AVs. These uncertainties include the year high-level AVs will become market-ready and the level of reliance of future AVs on physical infrastructures. To inform the development of the advice, the project first undertook an uptake forecast, an infrastructure assessment and economic analysis. Having accounted for the various uncertainties of future AVs, the project has found the greatest return can be achieved by investments that will: support current lower capability AVs offer some advantages for human drivers be strategically relevant to future higher-level AVs.

He begins with the automotive Utopia depicted by the spectacular General Motors Futurama exhibition at the World's Fair of 1939, that promised better living, new places to go, and new ways of getting there. He then takes us to later similar exhibitions that first floated the idea of congestion-free, crash-free transportation, and then the myriad opportunities on offer in a world of automated driving, where everyone in the vehicle could relax and do anything other than drive, while state-of-the-art technology took on the role of driving the car.Peter writes: “This book is not an entry into the debate about whether the automated driving revolution is good or bad, or whether it will yield (as a perennial question would have it) a transport “heaven” or a transport “hell.” It is a plea to stop asking such questions.”In this episode, Peter talks through some of the key themes in his book, and shares some broader ideas about the development of technologies and business models for the future of mobility.Peter Norton is associate professor of history in the Department of Engineering and Society at the University of Virginia, where he teaches history of technology, social dimensions of engineering, research, and professional ethics. von Jürgen Vagt 18.11.21 Heute begrüßte ich Prof. Dr. Stefanie Schmidtner von der Technische-Hochschule Ingolstadt bei den Zukunftsmobilisten. Ingolstadt ist zu einem Universitätsstandort für künstliche Intelligenz aufgebaut worden. Prof. Dr. Stefanie Schmidtner beschäftigt sich in Ihrem Lehrstuhl mit nachhaltiger Stadtentwicklung und künstlicher Intelligenz. In gewisser Weise geht es um das Konzept der Smart City, wenn Städte also smarter, digitaler und vernetzter werden, dann können Algorithmen dafür sorgen, dass der Verkehr effizienter organisiert wird. In diesem Konzept der Smart City sind zwei Komponenten zentral, einerseits ist die künstliche Intelligenz entscheidend und andererseits muss es digitale Infrastrukturen in den Städten geben. Prof. Dr. Stefanie Schmidtner hat erstmal den Begriff der künstlichen Intelligenz zerlegt und meinte in dieser Seite gäbe es zwar noch Baustellen, aber smarte, intelligente und digitaler Verkehr in den Städten ist mit der künstlichen Intelligenz des Jahres 2021 möglich. Digitale Infrastrukturen und die Smart City Aber um die Version einer Smart City Realität werden zu lassen, müsste sich in den Städten erst einmal eine gewisse digitale Infrastruktur geben. Hieran mangelt es und der Aufbau einer solchen digitalen Infrastruktur würde sehr große Ausgaben bedeuten. Wenn diese Voraussetzungen geschaffen werden, dann könnte der Verkehr smarter werden. Mit einem smarten Verkehr können Effizienzpotenziale gehoben werden. Noch ist der Verkehr überwiegend fossil, daher würde jede Effizienzsteigerung eine Reduzierung der CO2 -Emissionen bedeuten. Es pfeifen eigentlich die Spatzen von den Dächern und auch in den Koalitionsverhandlungen im November des Jahres 2021 wird die Version des klimaneutralen Lebens entfalten. Prof. Dr. Stefanie Schmidtner hob hervor, dass der Verkehr immer noch 20 % der Gesamtemissionen aus und es noch relativ einfache Optimierungspotenziale, weil schon mit einer einfachen Tourenoptimierung die Auslieferungsfahrten im Stadtbereich reduziert werden könnten. Aber wenn Deutschland 2040 oder 2050 CO2- neutral sein sollten, dann liegt noch viel Arbeit vor der Mobilitätswirtschaft. Sicher ist es, dass diese Veränderung in den Städten beginnen wird und es gibt auch schon weltweit einige interessante Städte in Asien. Aber auch in Europa gehen ein paar Städte voran.

Heute begrüßte ich mit Sascha Ricanek den Geschäftsführer der ZF – Race Engineering GmbH und wir sprachen über die Zukunft des Motorsports. ZF-Race Engineering GmbH ist wohl eher in der Fachwelt bekannt, aber die Marke Sachs ist schon eine etablierte deutsche Marke. ZF-Race Engineering liefert Fahrwerkskomponenten und Getriebe an diverse Rennställe in alle großen Rennserien. Das Innovationsthema Elektromobilität ist schon länger in der Formel E etabliert und die ersten Features sind auch schon erprobt und in die aktuellen Serienfahrzeuge überführt worden ist. Für die Automobilindustrie war der Motorsport immer ein Erprobungsfeld und wir kennen die Veränderungen im Automobilbau, ob es nun die gesteigerte Effizienz des Verbrennungsmotors ist oder der Allradantrieb aus dem Rallyesport. Wenn man ehrlich ist, dann hat auch der durchschnittliche Autofahrer von Motorsport im fossilen Zeitalter profitiert. Wie sieht es jetzt bei den neuen Themen aus? Sascha Ricanek hob hervor, dass die Ladung im Hochvoltbereich in der Formel E erprobt worden ist und soeben in die Serie überführt worden ist. Wasserstoff im Motorsport Die Batterie-elektrischen Antriebe und das autonome Fahren wird schon eingesetzt, aber das große Thema des Wasserstoffs ist momentan noch kein Thema im Motorsport. Sascha Ricanek meint, dass wir schon in den nächsten Jahren, also in den Jahren 2023 und 2024 die ersten Trucks mit einem Wasserstoff/Brennstoffzelle in den großen Rallyes sehen werden. Sascha Ricanek meint, dass die Kosten insbesondere Hersteller der wirkliche Hemmschuh sind. Die großen internationalen Klassen des Motorsports, also der Formel E und den Langstreckensport der WEC, mit dem großen Flaggschiff den 24 Stunden von Le Mans, sind in der Umstellung auf die neuen Antriebe und diese Veränderung kostet für alle Beteiligten sehr viel Geld. Wenn man an die klassischen Fahrergrößen wie Fanjo, Moss und Schumacher denken, dann kann man sich nicht autonomes Fahren im Motorsport vorstellen. Aber in der Fachwelt gibt es schon Ideen, wie man den Motorsport nutzt, um in der breiten Masse Vertrauen für das automatisiertes Fahren zu schaffen.

At the premiere of the documentary film Machine, a movie that explores artificial intelligence in general and includes reference to autonomous driving, Audi spoke about where they are at in terms of using this technology The film Produces, incorporated comments from Miklós Kiss, Audi's Head of Predevelopment of Automated Driving, because their work is a good example of how technology will not just make the things we currently do, easier, but it could change our behavior and the very shape of our cities. I spoke with Miklós who made a number of interesting comments. • Car companies have moved into a more realistic view of autonomous systems. “It wasn't really secret before, but there has been truly a hype and there was a hype in presentations and demonstrations. And what many of us have ignored is that much harder work to put that on the street, put it into worldwide operation than putting it on a test track”. • As a premium brand, Audi has to tackle autonomous driving relative to their market. Autonomous systems for taxis in well defined areas and public transport in well defined corridors. But as a luxury brand Audi has to try and develop cars that can be would around the world. So, the issue of varying road conditions, signposting and road rules is the major problem they have to address. • Governments have to look at maintaining the road system so that autonomous vehicles can operate (good line marking for a start) but it is not that complex. • Distraction is a problem when the driver is in control, but if there is a period of autonomous driving, but the driver has to stay awake incase the car no longer can control its self in the conditions, then having had some distraction for the driver (such as letting them watch a movie) is very helpful rather than letting them fall asleep. • As we move from striving to inform the driver about road conditions and vehicle dynamics to a place where the people in the car can relax or work, means a whole different approach to the infotainment screens and what and how they can display things. • Level 5 autonomy, where a car can chauffeur you anywhere at any time is “from my perspective, a bit of science fiction. One day we'll get it. But I never would say yes. I think Level 3 and level 4 systems are quite near. And we see that in the next decade”. • Miklós has a strong sense of job security. There will be a need for further development for many years to come.
