Cattle Industry News NCBA Calls Out Supreme Court Decision on Corporate Transparency Act: A Blow to Family Farms and Ranches The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) voiced strong disappointment following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to lift an injunction that had temporarily halted enforcement of the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA). The CTA introduces new reporting requirements that some say could impose significant burdens on small businesses, including family-owned farms and ranches. NCBA Executive Director of Government Affairs, Kent Bacus, expressed concern about the potential impact by saying the Corporate Transparency Act will blanket family-owned farms and ranches in excessive red tape, placing millions of small business owners at risk of legal trouble.  He went on to say that he is urging President Trump and the Treasury Secretary to intervene and protect small businesses from these onerous requirements by delaying enforcement until a workable solution is found. While NCBA's advocacy primarily focuses on farmers and ranchers, the Act's implications extend beyond agriculture. NCBA's Director of Policy Communications highlighted how the law could also weigh heavily on small and family-owned meat processors, adding to their regulatory challenges. The U.S. Supreme Court's decision overturned a nationwide injunction, allowing the Department of Treasury to enforce the Act while ongoing federal court cases challenge its legality. What This Means for Small Businesses The CTA would require entities to disclose detailed ownership information to the federal government, which could pose administrative and financial challenges for smaller operations.  Given the complexity of these new requirements, it is recommended that whether in agriculture, meat processing, or other industries—seek advice from legal or tax professionals to ensure compliance and mitigate risks. State to lift ban on new irrigation wells Jackson EMC Accepting Applications for $1,000 Walter Harrison Scholarship Georgia Power hiking rates next month All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: State to lift ban on new irrigation wells Georgia is lifting a decade-long moratorium on new irrigation wells in Southwest Georgia, effective April 1. Governor Brian Kemp announced that the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) will accept applications for groundwater withdrawal permits, requiring drought-related measures to protect water supplies in the Lower Flint and Chattahoochee river basins. The moratorium, imposed in 2012 due to drought, was partially eased last year. Extensive research and improved water tracking technology have now enabled the EPD to confidently lift the ban. This decision follows a legal victory over water allocation disputes with Florida and Alabama. STORY 2: Jackson EMC Accepting Applications for $1,000 Walter Harrison Scholarship Jackson Electric Membership Cooperative is accepting applications for the Walter Harrison Scholarship, offering $1,000 for students attending Georgia colleges or technical schools. Eligible applicants must be enrolled or accepted at accredited institutions and reside in a household served by Jackson EMC. Evaluation criteria include financial need, GPA, SAT scores, academic standing, honors, and community involvement. Applications, due by January 31, 2025, can be obtained from school counselors or online. Annually, 15 scholarships are awarded by Georgia's electric cooperatives, honoring Walter Harrison's legacy in the cooperative movement. Since 1985, over $281,500 has been awarded to 292 students. STORY 3: Georgia Power hiking rates next month Georgia's Public Service Commission approved a 3.5% rate increase for Georgia Power customers, raising average residential bills by $5.48 per month. This is part of a series of hikes over recent years, totaling over $40 in increases, partly due to new nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle and rising fuel costs. Commissioner Lauren "Bubba" McDonald expressed concern about the timing, given recent decreases in food and gas prices, but ultimately supported the increase. Georgia Power's lawyer, Brandon Marzo, stated the hike is necessary due to ongoing investments. The new rates will start on January 1. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: 08.05.24 OBITS_FINAL STORY 4: GCPS art educators earn state honors Two educators from Gwinnett County Public Schools have been honored by the Georgia Art Education Association (GAEA) for their contributions to art education. The GAEA annually honors members nominated by peers and selected through a rigorous process, supporting art educators across Georgia. STORY 5: Hebron Christian Wins 1st State Football Championship Hebron Christian Academy's football team, under Coach Jonathan Gess, won their first state championship by defeating Prince Avenue Christian 56-28 in the Class AAA-A Private final. This victory marks a significant achievement in Gess's third year, following a previous loss to Prince Avenue. The Lions dominated with a strong ground game, led by quarterback Thomas Stallworth and running back Devon Caldwell. Hebron's defense also excelled, limiting Prince Avenue's offense. Gess, previously successful at Eagle’s Landing Christian, has rapidly transformed Hebron into a competitive program, promising more future successes. Break 3: STORY 6: AROUND TOWN: Gwinnettians Honored For Dedication To Preserving County's History This edition highlights several notable achievements in Gwinnett County. Five individuals and organizations were inducted into the Preservation Hall of Fame for their efforts in preserving the county's history. Nikki Merritt was elected chair of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, focusing on advocacy for minority communities. Additionally, Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton celebrated the birth of its 10,000th baby, marking a significant milestone in its maternal care services. STORY 7: Trump names Herschel Walker to ambassador post President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Herschel Walker, a former University of Georgia football star and longtime friend, as U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas. Walker, who lost a 2022 Senate race to Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock, has been a prominent advocate for youth sports and previously served as co-chair of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Trump's nominations also include other Georgians like former Sen. David Perdue for ambassador to China and former Sen. Kelly Loeffler for the Small Business Administration. The Angus breed's diversity is its strength and its challenge — how the breed supports producers across the United States is its measure of success.  Jonathan Perry, newly elected president and chairman of the American Angus Association Board of Directors says they will continue a focus on the strengths of the Angus cow and giving breeders tools to work in all diverse systems.  “That's one of the things that we've really put a lot of emphasis on from new EPD (expected progeny difference) developments, new phenotype collections, things that we can do to try to bring more emphasis to longevity, stayability, the function of the cow,” Perry says. “No matter where we go end-target wise, we've got to continue to come back to home base of what got us there.” To hear why Perry is so optimistic about the future of the breed, listen to the full interview.RELATED READING:American Angus Association Concludes Fiscal Year, Shows Continued Leadership in Beef IndustryNew Leadership elected to the American Angus Association Board of DirectorsVisit AngusJournal.net for more and to subscribe.

David Cohen is one of the smartest docs on Twitter. I learned a bunch talking with him. The procedure called transcatheter aortic valve implantation or TAVR is a damn miracle. In days of old, a heart surgeon would have to saw open the chest and cut out the heavily calcified immobile aortic valve and sew in a new one. I watched a case as a young doctor and came away shocked that patients survive this surgery. TAVR is even more stunning. Doctors place a valve up the aorta, across the diseased valve, and then place the new valve into the old valve. The verbs squishing or smooshing come to mind. The other unbelievable thing about TAVR is that strokes are less common than you'd think. When I first heard about TAVR, I thought: how is it not limited by all that debris going into the brain? Well, there is less debris than I would have thought. But not zero debris. In fact, there is one device on the market that forms a barrier between the aorta and the brain. We call it an embolic protection device (EPD) or cerebral embolic protection (CEP).Early studies show that the device catches debris that would have occluded blood vessels in the brain—iow, caused stroke. The pictures almost sell the device—because, obviously, catching debris has to be beneficial. But. But. There are always ‘but's' in Medicine. The PROTECTED TAVR trial, which compared TAVR with and without an embolic protection device failed to show a statistically significant reduction in stroke. It was a good trial, but it did not close the door for the device. For two reasons: one was that the trial was underpowered. The lower bound of the 95% confidence interval allowed for a 1.7% lower rate of stroke in the treatment arm. Neurologists feel that a 1% risk reduction in stroke is clinically important. The other reason was that a secondary endpoint of “disabling” stroke was 60% lower with the device. We needed more data. Another trial is not likely going to happen. Trials are expensive and take a long time. This is where Dr Cohen's group comes in. They performed an observational study looking at more than 400k patients in a TAVR registry. About 13% got the device and 87% did not. This is where Sensible Medicine readers should start feeling a rash. Why? Because you know how scary it is to try and compare outcomes in two groups of patients who were not randomized. Cohen, however, tells me about a super-interesting way to approximate randomization in this comparison. It's called an instrumental variable analysis. He explains this to me in clear terms during our conversation. I love methods so I was enthralled. But that isn't all. The other thing is that his study, like the PROTECTED TAVR trial, came up with tantalizing close results. We discuss that as well. I loved our talk. Ep 49. Structural engineer David Watson describes the enduring appeal of brick and its underexploited superpower: reuse Brick has many advantages: durability, aesthetics, use as both envelope and structure, and the possibility of local (even artisanal) production. This last point differentiates it from steel and concrete, due to the Ordinary Portland Cement needed for concrete production. ‘We need to ‘build our intuition about what impacts embodied carbon and emissions from different materials,' says Watson. Watson highlights the importance of querying the firing required to achieve different finishes, because it varies between brick types and can significantly impact overall embodied carbon. It's also important to understand the fuel used in the kilns where bricks are fired.  While in the UK this is predominantly natural gas, abroad it might be charcoal or coal, both of which generate significant amounts of particulates. In non-loadbearing cladding applications, the embodied carbon of the support systems must be taken into account because they can comprise as much embodied carbon as the brick and mortar combined. These hidden impacts are often difficult to calculate due to lack of EPD data, explains Watson. Brick reuse is on the increase but currently comprises less than five per cent of the market because of the challenge of removing the mortar, particularly those bound with Ordinary Portland Cement. Traditional lime-bound mortars are easier to remove. Current research is exploring mechanised removal of cement-bound mortars, and increased demand should prompt the market to respond, says Watson. In this episode, we also discuss ConcreteZero targets (AKTII is a signatory) and the extent to which they rely on GGBS. Watson stresses the necessity of ‘using less', for example, exploring ribbed, coffered or troughed slabs as an alternative to flat slabs. He advocates form-effective design, marrying structure with architectural expression in a lean use of materials. David Watson can be contacted at david.watson@akt-uk.com. What are breeding values? And why do you need a breeding objective? Our guest this week, Dr Jamie Courter, Mizzou Beef Genetics Extension Specialist, explains why they are so important for reaching our breeding goals. Do you have a breeding objective? This is the first question Jamie asks every producer. “I don't care what your breeding objective is if it makes sense for you,” says Jamie, “I just hope that you have one.” With no farm being the same as another, a breeding objective needs to be personalised to the goals of each individual business. But why are they so important? “That's how we can be profitable. We have to identify an end goal and we have to keep making consistent selection decisions that get us towards that goal. You won't see the impact of this year's bull decisions until five years down the road. If we don't have that objective in mind, we're just shooting in the dark. We're not heading towards that steady upward trajectory of the traits that really matter,” explains Jamie. So, once you know where you want to be, how do you get there? Breeding values, be it an ASBV, EBV or EPD are the best tool we have to reach that goal. Jamie does a great job of explaining how breeding values work and why results can vary. “I always ask producers, do you have siblings? Do you act the same, do you look the same? Light bulbs come on kind of at that point,” she shares. “In the beef cattle industry, we put pens of full sibling bulls together. It's a great way to get genetic uniformity, but it's not identical, right? They're as similar as they can be, but they're never identical.”Keeping in mind that there are always outliers is useful. “If we have a hundred full siblings, then we would expect the average performance of those hundred calves to be the parent average, right? Most of the calf crop will have a weight right around what we expect, but we're going to have outliers on either side,” says Jamie. “It's just a result of the shuffling of the DNA. A lot of times people expect it to be perfect and unfortunately with statistics, there's always outliers one way or the other.”Jamie points out, “We can get a good picture of the true genetic merit of those animals and which pieces of DNA they inherited from their sire or their dam. It's 50% both times, but there are 30 pairs of chromosomes and there are however many million base pairs that could have been inherited. And so we're able to get at the true genetic difference that those animals have, with genetics.”Read more here:https://blog.steakgenomics.org/Head Shepherd is brought to you by neXtgen Agri International Limited, we help livestock farmers get the most out of the genetics they farm with. EPISODE 168 DETAILS Everyone has their breed of choice.  For whatever reason and experiences we've had, has led many of us picking certain breeds over others.  Today we explore the philosophy and goals around Wasem Red Angus.   Calving season is getting ready to start for many producers and for some others it is still a ways away yet.  Regardless, we need to get a jump on scours and make sure each and every calf that hits the ground has the best chance of survival.  A simple solution… FARMATAN from Imogene Ingredients.   As always we have the latest market reports and recaps from Kirk Donsbach with Stone X Financial, Inc. along with news and updates you need to hear.  It's all covered on this brand new episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show!   WASEM RED ANGUS The Wasem family started ranching in 2004 in Halliday, North Dakota with a small herd of commercial Red Angus and Simmental cows. They decided to get into the registered Red Angus business and held their first bull sale in 2012.  Each year they keep back the best registered heifers to expand the registered herd and to improve our genetics.  They strive to offer cattle with power and performance through balanced EPD's and phenotype.  Disposition is a must in the herd.  They are proud to be selling Red Angus Bulls in North Dakota. They welcome you out any time to look at cattle. Family Business Here at Wasem Red Angus, we are truly a family operation.  Each one of us has a job on the ranch and work together to make the operation a success.  Chris is in charge of many of the daily tasks, including feeding, planting, and harvesting.  Jolyn works on record-keeping and marketing.  Kacee is the number 2 cook in the house, quickly making her way to the top.  Braelyn is the one who makes us all laugh.  There are many days on the ranch, we need a good laugh!  The girls have been a huge asset working cattle the past few years, they are learning about low-stress livestock handling, as well as becoming good horsemen.  We wouldn't be able to get everything done without the help of family, friends, and neighbors throughout the year and we are grateful for those relationships.  Customer Service Customer service is really important to us. The relationships we build don't end the day of the sale. We stand behind the Red Angus Bulls we sell, and your happiness is important! WHAT CAUSES SCOURS IN BEEF CATTLE/CALVES Clostridia-Enterotoxemia The most common form of Clostridium in cattle is caused by Clostridia perfringens. The gram-positive bacteria are a challenge due to its ability to form spores and lay dormant for long-periods of time. The bacteria reproduce by releasing spores into its environment (soil, feed, manure). The spores can even lay dormant in the animal's intestine until opportunity presents itself. Infection takes place either through ingestion of spores or through an open wound. The most severe cases happen within the first month of a calf's life, and can result in sudden death. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Bloody, Mucus Present, Bubbly • Dehydrated • Bloat • Blindness Prevention/Treatment: Prevention can be difficult due to the Clostridia spores being extremely durable and present almost everywhere. Complete cleanout and disinfection between calves is helpful, but not always effective. A good vaccination program will reduce clinical disease. The best method is to develop good gut health and the immune system of the calf. Farmatan has been shown to strengthen the intestinal wall, helping to prevent infection from taking hold. Coccidiosis Cattle are host to numerous species of Coccidia, a single-celled protozoal parasite. Infection and clinical symptoms can happen any time during a calf's life, with the most severe reaction usually occurring between 3-6 weeks of age. The life-cycle of coccidia requires time to infect the intestine causing destruction of the mucosal and epithelial lining. The oocytes mature outside the host in warm, moist environments before being consumed, causing infection of a new host. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Watery, Bloody • Depression • Weight Loss Prevention/Treatment: Prevention of Coccidiosis is possible by keeping young calves separate from older animals, providing clean water and feed, and dry conditions. Isolation of infected animals is key to preventing transmission. Keeping the pen dry is the most important step a farmer/rancher can take in preventing Coccidiosis. Treatment can have a good impact on reducing secondary disease, and speeding up recovery time. Farmatan has been shown to disrupt the reproductive cycle of Coccidia; and may help strengthen the intestinal wall to prevent infection, in both the cow and calf. Coronavirus Bovine Coronavirus is a ubiquitous, envelope-viral disease, causing respiratory and enteric infection. There are many serotypes for this virus, making it difficult to test for, and create a vaccine. Coronavirus can present as either diarrhea and/or respiratory illness; transmitted through nasal discharge and/or feces. Animal reservoirs continue to spread the disease, and make eradication almost impossible. Clinical disease will likely occur between days 10-14, and present for up to 4 days. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Watery • Nasal Discharge • Coughing Prevention/Treatment: Prevention is difficult due to wild animals transmitting the disease. Keeping wild animals out of animal enclosures is essential. Isolation of infected animals is critical to preventing the spread of Coronavirus. Adequate colostrum intake, along with a good vaccination program will help prevent clinical disease. Learn more about the positive effects of Farmtan's active ingredient on Coronavirus HERE. Cryptosporidium Cryptosporidium Parvum is a single-celled parasite responsible for causing infection in young calves. The infection takes place within the first four weeks of a calves' life, afterwards immunity has developed within the calf. The parasite is either passed from the cow or spread through infected water sources. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Watery, Bloody, Mucus present • Colic • Depression Prevention/Treatment: Good sanitary conditions, especially clean water is essential in preventing transmission of cryptosporidium. Isolation of sick calves will help reduce the effect on the overall herd. There is some good effect of calves given adequate colostrum, however this is likely helping by reducing other pathogenic loads rather than a direct effect on Cryptosporidium, itself. Farmatan fed prior to calving has been shown to disrupt the life-cycle and reduce transmission from the cow. The direct action of Farmatan on the parasite makes it an excellent choice for treating calves. Learn more about the positive effect of Farmatan's active ingredient HERE. E. Coli Escherichia Coli is a bacterial infection that affects calves within the first week of their life. The bacteria colonize in the lower intestine and produce a toxin. The toxin causes excessive secretion of fluids. The zoonotic disease has special importance in food safety and human health. Colostrum and natural immunity are often not sufficient in preventing infection in cases of high bacterial concentrations. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Creamy, Yellow • Abdominal Pains • Fever • Vomiting Prevention/Treatment: The best prevention methods for E. Coli include: clean water, dry bedding/environment, isolation of infected animals, and vaccination. Treatment with antibiotics and oral fluids have great benefits in reducing clinical symptoms of the disease. Farmatan has been shown to reduce bacterial load and help prevent infection. Learn more about the positive effects of Farmatan's active ingredient HERE. Rotavirus Rotavirus in calves is caused by a virus belonging to the Reoviridae family, as a non-enveloped RNA virus. Rotavirus is thought to be the most common cause of neonatal diarrhea in calves. The virus tends to affect calves between the age of 1-day-old up to a month, with most cases presenting within the first week of life. Shedding and reinfection can happen in older calves and cows. Clinical symptoms are rarely present after the first month of life; older animals tend to either be carriers or asymptomatic. The majority of herds have some level present, with transmission likely happening during or shortly after birth. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Pale Yellow, Bloody • Dehydrated • Dull calves • Reluctant to drink Prevention/Treatment: The ideal scenario is to prevent infection through, sanitary facilities (calving barn), outdoor calf housing, and a good vaccination program. Colostrum will provide much needed antibodies, protecting the calf before their immune system is fully developed to combat the disease. Farmatan fed prior to calving can help reduce the pathogen load of the cow, reducing the likelihood of transmission. Farmatan supplemented in the milk has been shown to decrease the virus' ability to cause infection and clinical disease. The best treatment for calves already presenting clinical disease is to administer oral fluids/electrolytes to rehydrate the calf. Learn more about the positive effect of Farmatan's active ingredient HERE. Salmonella Salmonella infection of cattle is caused by a variety of species within the family. While the disease is uncommon in cattle with little effect on calf health, it has massive implications for human health and food safety. The bacteria spreads through direct contact or contaminated feed & water. This disease is highly regulated by the USDA. The most severe cases of salmonella affect calves between the ages of 7-10 days old. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Bloody (flakes of slough tissue), Watery, Mucus present • Lethargic • Fever Prevention/Treatment: Prevention is always the best option: provide clean water, feed, and bedding. Isolate infected animals, ensure adequate colostrum intake, and develop a vaccination program with your veterinarian. Treatment with antibiotics and fluids (oral or intravenous) greatly increases the survival rate of calves infected with Salmonella. Farmatan has been shown to help reduce the likelihood of infection by protecting the gut, and reduce recovery time of infected animals.  LEARN MORE ABOUT IMOGENE INGREDIENTS  PRODUCTS Paul Mitchell & Paul Martin on RFD TV Rural American Live!  FEATURING Chris Wasem, Wasem Red Angus https://www.wasemredangus.com/ @WasemReds   Paul Mitchell Imogene Ingredients https://www.imogeneingredients.com/farmatanusa @farmatanusa   Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/   @StoneXGroupInc      Mark Van Zee  Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime   Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos Questions & Concerns From The Field? The Ranch Located on the Glacial Ridge, surrounded by rolling prairie and oak savannas, Clear Springs has a unique landscape for Minnesota. The namesake is the many natural springs they have captured to water the cattle, providing them with some of the cleanest water in the world. Every acre is managed with soil health in mind, from intensive rotation on the pastureland to no till and cover crops practiced on the farmland. The vacation rental house on the ranch allows us to share our beautiful views and rural lifestyle with others. The Herd Grown mainly from the Hook Farms herd, the current CLRS cowherd is "bred for balance". Balance between genotype and physical traits, balance throughout their EPD profiles, and balance within the offering having both maternal and terminal oriented bulls. The latest tools and technology are used to further advance the genetics of the herd as well as good ol' cowboy logic. They strive to graze as long as possible each year and develop seedstock with longevity in mind. The Wulf family, along with their affiliates Highland Acres, Anderson Cattle and Trails End market yearling bulls and select females through the Bred for Balance sale held each February.   BEEF ANTITRUST LITIGATION GETS MORE ENTRIES According to Meating Place, The Big Four beef packing companies face yet another four lawsuits accusing them of conspiring to “fix, raise, stabilize and/or maintain the price of beef” sold to retailers since 2015, according to the documents in filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York last week. The New York cases mirror allegations leveled in lawsuits filed over the last few months in North Carolina and Illinois, and a case filed in 2022 by several quick-service restaurant chains. The Illinois case and those that were filed earlier have been transferred to the Minnesota District Court to be consolidated with other, similar antitrust cases in Multidistrict Litigation. All of those lawsuits resemble previous litigation against beef packers that garnered settlements in the tens of millions of dollars, at the same time that the Department of Justice and Congress scrutinized their practices.  In the most recent New York-based cases, BJ's Wholesale Club Inc., Gordon Food Service Inc. and Glazer Foods Co.,  Quality Supply Chain Co-Op Inc. (QSCC) and Target Corp., all accused Cargill Inc., JBS S.A., National Beef Packing Co. and Tyson Foods Inc. of coordinating or manipulating beef prices to levels they would not have reached without the alleged actions, according to court documents. The separate filings also accuse several operating affiliates of the four processors of participating in the alleged violations of the Sherman Act through “anticompetitive means” concerning the price of boxed and case-ready meat. The four defendants sold approximately 80% of the more than 25 million pounds of fresh and frozen beef sold in the U.S. market in 2018 alone, each of the similar suits claim. The latest lawsuits also all cite efforts by the U.S. Department of Justice and USDA in 2020 to investigate allegations of beef pricing practices among the current defendants going back to at least the beginning of 2015. We give you the information to make your cow herd more efficient because uniformity reduces cost and creates profit.  This is a big one and we have it all covered on this episode of the Ranch It Up Radio Show!  Join Jeff 'Tigger' Erhardt, the Boss Lady Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC', and our crew as we bring you the latest in markets, news, and Western entertainment on this all-new episode of the Ranch It Up Radio Show.  Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 161 DETAILS To get our cow herd as efficient as possible, one has to take the guesswork out of the equation.  This can be tough no matter what we do because we are dealing with mother nature.  But we CAN use mother nature and science to find the perfect genetic match for our cows.  The seedstock industry has been using these tools for the past several years and they are available for anyone in the commercial business to use.  No more wasted matings, disappointments and not understanding why we had all the variation come weaning time.  Let's get prescribed matings and add uniformity to our calf crop.  Marty Ropp with Allied Genetic Resources joins us today for a very in depth conversation.  It is complex but it does not have to be confusing and all these wonderful tools are readily available at our fingertips.  We have the latest market recaps from Kirk Donsbach with Stone X Financial, Inc.  Plus the news and information you have come to rely on each and every week!  As always Tigger & BEC and the Ranch It Up crew dive into the latest agriculture news, rodeo action not to miss, and cover the cattle markets. ALLIED GENETIC RESOURCES The Allied approach combines consistent genetic value improvement with services to reward producers for making better cattle. Allied services are designed primarily for commercial customer success with practical genetic solutions applied to your specific production system needs. The seedstock industry's only purpose is to drive genetic change in the commercial cattle industry by breeding and developing bulls with balanced traits and bred-in profit drivers that add value at the ranch and beyond. Their efforts and dedication are vital to an industry challenged with producing a product that must excel in varying environments, with differing management practices, balanced with maternal and terminal requirements, all while performing in the feedlot and consistently delivering an enjoyable eating experience for the consumer. Not an easy job to say the least. You've worked for years, in some cases for generations, at constant genetic improvement. It would be hard to measure the time and money you've invested in genetics to ensure your commercial customers can confidently buy the bulls you produce each year. But that alone is not enough to differentiate you from your competition. In today's ever-increasingly competitive seedstock business, you've got to offer customer service after the sale, including marketing options for your bull customers to capture the value they've invested in from your program. That's where Allied can deliver solutions… Allied values its relationship with Superior Livestock Auction, providing its bull customers with greater access to the nation's largest buyer base and the risk management of forward contracting. Clint Berry has worked with buyers and sellers of high-quality cattle for more than a decade, building a solid reputation with ranchers and feeders. Along with his growing team of Superior Livestock reps, strategically distributed throughout cattle country, Clint works daily in the market to build the supply and the demand for load lots of cattle, with added value options that deliver profit throughout each segment of the industry. RightMate, Precision Mating Technology, Powered by Top Genomics LLC Genetic providers have had solid tools to assist in making consistent genetic progress for many years. In the past few years improved EPDs, bolstered by the inclusion of genomic evaluation, have been a great step forward to making the potential for progress even greater. Now there is a tested program that offers substantially more rapid improvement and success from your investment in data collection and genomic testing. RightMate generates specific, precision mating options that take full advantage of complementarity genomics between sires and dams plus all of the EPD power created from today's massive trait databases and it is easy to use. RightMate will absolutely change the trajectory and consistency of your genetic improvement program. Never before has a tool been available to the beef business that drives positive change and reduces variability so quickly. Yes, RightMate technology can also help you create a more consistent calf crop. With the slow nature of improvement, because of the relatively low reproductive rate of cattle vs. other species, you simply can't afford to make decisions that don't assure progress. This is especially true for those with extensive embryo programs. The cost of filling recipient females with embryos from matings that could have been much better, is just too high to take chances. Genomically assured recommendations are the key! All of us have had experiences when a mating that looked promising and exciting just didn't work. There are simply some bulls that should be bred to some females on a genomic basis and others that should not, depending on your breeding objectives and desired outcomes. You choose the bulls you wish to use, and RightMate removes those that are marginal or risky choices on a cow-by-cow basis.  The final product is a list of the best sire choices for each female ranked according to your breeding objectives along with genetic expectations for each mating result.  From that sorted list, you make the call based on your experience and desires for the additional traits that matter to you and your customer's business. Managing genetic diversity is another feature of our precision mating tool.  For each mating, a “genomic inbreeding” prediction is part of the process and breeding report with appropriate weighting applied to ensure diversity for the future at a level prioritized by the producer.  This tool has great potential for commercial herds as well, where minimizing the negative effects of inbreeding can have significant positive effects on profitability. Since 2019 we have grown to more than 100 customer herds using RightMate and RightChoice technologies with overwhelming success. In 2023 alone we will generate more than 15,000 seedstock mating recommendations and our growing list of commercial customers interested in precision mating is growing quickly as well.  The first females created using RightMate precision mating technology are already weaning their second calf crop and using RightMate for the calf sire decisions. The results are just as we had hoped they would be. Herds with much greater rates of genetic improvement for the traits they prioritize, more uniformity and marketability and ultimately more profit for themselves and their customers. There are currently two RightMate options, but we have customized and blended these options for breeders that wish to. Both options require that raw genotypes are available for Top Genomics to evaluate on every sire and dam in the RightMate or RightMate Plus program. Better. Stronger. Faster. RIGHTMATE 1.  Creates genomic mating suggestions for each female in the cowherd and provides decision making tools to guide you through the list of prescribed sires for each female. 2.  Uses the genotypes of up to 20 sires of your choice. You may use different sire lists for heifers vs. cow matings. RIGHTMATE PLUS 1.  RightMate Plus is designed more for donor or higher impact females. 2.  Females will be test mated to the entire Top Genomic sire database (or by the breed of your choice) and the top choices among the entire list are recommended. 3.  This list of high value sires to choose from with RightMate Plus is large and growing every week. Another post on LinkedIn is what got this conversation/episode started. https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7104814299386171392/ Perhaps it was the architectural rendering of a piece of cake that caught my eye – well done Steven! (FYI as of this writing this post has 564 reactions, 59 comments and 45 reposts- that's influence!) Meet Steven Biersteker, architect by day and content creator by night. Here is his LinkedIn page: https://www.linkedin.com/in/steven-biersteker/ We explore a lot of topics in this episode including why Steven entered this field and how he got to where he is today. (My favorite part of every episode.) Other notions we discuss: Getting to low operational carbon is simple ... in theory. We are running highly efficient buildings on high carbon fuels. Citizens need to demand better and use energy smarter. Designing highly efficient buildings is critical, but so is low-carbon electricity and smart users. We learned that he's writing a book (ABCs of Carbon + Architecture) because he sees a big problem: There is a huge gap between the know-it-alls and the know-it-nots. His book will be simple to read, digestible, and most importantly brief (see the book outline below). And also see below for 10 important questions about low carbon design for every architect and builder to ask themselves/their client. It's on all of us to work together, you can make a difference. Be willing to ask questions. This episode was recorded in October 2023. Here is a sneak peak of the key topics in his book: CARBON LINGO - The Key terms you need to know GLOBAL WARMING 101 - The basics, nothing more SCOPING OUT CARBON - Who's scope are carbon emissions? MEASURING CARBON - How we measure this stuff WHOLE LIFE CARBON - Embodied & Operational Carbon LIFE-CYCLE STAGES - EN15978 - A1 - C EMBODIED CARBON - What's accounted for? MATERIALS - Emissions & carbon sequestering ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATIONS - The intro to Epd's OPERATIONAL CARBON - The basics of emissions ENERGY USE - How does energy impact GHG REFRIGERANTS - What's the issue with refrigerants? CARBON COMPARISON - So what is a ton of carbon anyway? BONUS: 10 simple questions to achieve a low-carbon design.  1. Does this building need to be built?  No - Great, you just saved the planet. Yes - Move on to question 2.    2. Does this building need to be built this big?  No - Build what you need and nothing more.  Yes - Move to question 3.    3. Is there an existing building we could use instead?  No - Let's try and build the best new building we can.  Yes - Renovated buildings reduce embodied carbon by up to 70%    4. Can we use a biogenic material as our structure?  No - Focus on less material and lower impact materials.  Yes - Stick frame and mass timber are great structural options    5. Can the building be designed to come apart?  No - Concrete is the worst material for disassembly.  Yes - Steel and Mass Timber should be bolted for disassembly    6. Can we fully electrify the heating & cooling systems?  No - Maximize energy efficiency through passive system design  Yes - Heat pumps will reduce your energy use by 3x's    7. Can we reduce our mechanical system size?  No - Large mechanical systems are expensive to operate long-term  Yes - Use south-facing glazing and passive ventilation    8. Can we specify biogenic insulation and cladding materials  No - Find the lowest impact insulation materials. Try EPS over XPS  Yes - Cellulose, hemp, denim, and wool are great insulators    9. Do the users know how to best operate the building?  No - Make sure users are aware of the passive systems that reduce energy use  Yes - A great building that isn't operated well destroys the design    10. Can we minimize the impervious site materials?  No - Large parking and sidewalk areas have a large impact  Yes - Grasses and natural areas create carbon sinks    Sustainable building design is complex, but there are some basic questions that will help make the most important decisions.

Experience only emboldens the group. The members of Electus per Deus become more entrenched in the cult of Cecilia Steyn. They refine their cold-blooded tactics and continue their killing spree. A new follower joins the growing cult with plans to infiltrate, peek behind the curtain, and see what EPD is really up to. Our host, Kurt Kubicek, meets one of the murderers in prison – and we hear a first hand account of a savage execution.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When Engineering, Product, and Design (EPD) come together to create the first version of a given piece of software, it feels like everyone is on the same page and has the same priorities. But, once that initial implementation ships to users, the Product and Design departments tend to move on, leaving engineers to maintain the software. This creates an uncomfortable tension between the existing user experience (UX) and the underlying technical details. On today's show, we talk about that EPD tension and how we might work to mitigate it.Follow the show and be sure to join the discussion on Discord!
