In this episode, the Butte Blazzst Boyezzz™ talk with a very special guest by the name of Garry Brents. Garry is the prolific solo artist behind projects such as Sallow Moth, Homesick, and Gonemage, as well as being one half of underground legends, the now-defunct Cara Neir. However, Garry is currently probably most well-known for Memorrhage, a project that incorporates a healthy dose of 90s nu-metal magic combined with metallic hardcore, grind, and industrial metal influences. Memorrhage has been covered by a wide array of underground metal publications as well as national news outlets, such as NPR. During the Buddt Bladd Beauz™ talk with Garry, they explore the reasons behind the confounding return of nu-metal and how Garry balances the pop-oriented aspects of nu-metal with the aggression of Garry's other influences. They examine the significance of 90s nostalgia for millennials and zoomers. Finally, they discuss the impact that role-playing games, and specifically Magic: The Gathering, have had on Garry's creative voice.    Links Garry's Bandcamp with all of his projects: https://lilangisla.bandcamp.com/ Garry's Twitter: https://x.com/gonemage Garry's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gonemage

The latest episode of The BrooklynVegan Show is an interview with Walter Schreifels, who's busy as ever. His beloved early 2000s-era band Rival Schools just gave their classic debut LP United by Fate an expanded 20th anniversary reissue, and the band is reuniting for some shows in 2023. On top of that, Quicksand continue to tour and put out new music, Youth of Today just wrapped up some shows, and Gorilla Biscuits just announced some upcoming dates. I recorded the conversation with Walter before the YOT shows happened and before the GB announcement, which he sort of teased during the episode, and we spoke about just about everything he's got going on lately. We focused a lot on United by Fate; Walter reflected on making the album, working on it with Bon Jovi producer Luke Ebbin, and the impact the album's left over time. We talked about how, with Rival Schools coming at the start of the emo boom and taking bands like Thursday and Taking Back Sunday on tour, Walter was simultaneously a "not-so-elder statesman" of that world and also a contemporary/peer and kindred spirit. He also talked about meeting and being won over by Cave In in those days, and how now Cave In's Stephen Brodsky and Candiria's John LaMacchia have both played as Quicksand's touring guitarists this year. The conversation also spiraled into other topics, like the parallels between the rising tides of Nirvana in the early '90s and Turnstile today, comparisons between hardcore in the '80s and hardcore now, and much more. Pick up the new United by Fate reissue on red vinyl in our store, and also browse our collection of Quicksand, Youth of Today, and Gorilla Biscuits records and merch.   Theme music by Michael Silverstein.

The Pipeman interviews John La Macchia. This is his first solo work ever. The pandemic gave John the opportunity to write new music from him and that was true to him. He had time to work and perfect it during the pandemic. There was psychedelic vibe to the Bled Out video. The writing process was very therapeutic to John. Johns' music can be very dark, and he sings about things that upset him. Because of that it allows him to release and be a happy person. For a long time, John didn't want to see celebrity wearing metal band shirts. The way it is now you have access to all kinds of music. The debut album called Thunderheads due May 20 on aqua lamb records. There are a few ways you can get the record. Each purchase comes with 100-page book of additional content. You can connect with John on all major platforms. You can stream on all major streaming platforms. He will be doing many tour dates to come. On May 20, the anticipated debut album from LaMacchia will be released via Aqualamb Records. Called Thunderheads, it features nine sweeping tracks that mark the first solo works from John LaMacchia – best known as the guitarist for Brooklyn hardcore/prog-metal group Candiria – though the new material is unlike anything the multi-instrumentalist has done to date and shows a new breadth to his versatile talent. Today, LaMacchia releases a psychedelic-tinged new video for the first single “Bled Out,” a deep dive through crunchy guitars and free-falling bass, entwined with the candy-sweet vocals blend of LaMacchia and Sabrina Ellie. The totality of Thunderheads presents a moody, experimental indie rock vibe, with layered sonic nuances and male-female vocal interplay that presents a dimensional new palette that is comparable to Massive Attack, Doves and Radiohead. Composed and recorded over the course of 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic break, Thunderheads plays like a lullaby for the apocalypse. With healthy doses of self-respect and emotional bravery that serve as a salve for our pandemic-weary heart, it allows listeners to escape a world that is falling apart with music and creativity. In addition to John LaMacchia, who has recorded all of the guitars, vocals, keyboards and programming for Thunderheads, additional guest contributions come courtesy of Kellii Scott (Failure) on drums, Michael MacIvor (Candiria) on bass guitar, Mario Quintero (Spotlights) on keyboards and Andrea Horne (Vaureen), Candice Freshko and Sabrina Ellie on vocals. Presales for Thunderheads are available now at Aqualamb Records' website with blue and pink vinyl variants, CD and digital options. Each purchase comes with an accompanying 100-page book filled with lush artwork, drawings, lyrics and additional content to get inside the mind of LaMacchia and the creative process. John Lamacchia joins us this week to talk about “Thunderheads” his brand new record set to release on May 20 on Aqualamb Records.  For decades, John led Brooklyn-based progressive metallic hardcore band Candiria, been active with other projects such as Spylacopa as well as DJ'ing at various NYC night spots. Thunderheads is a deeply personal record, produced during the pandemic that dealt with, as Lamacchia puts it, “ the isolation and the feeling that the world was falling apart,” however the record has a markedly uplifting quality.  Intro:     “Everything Went Black” – Composed and recorded by Mike Hill Outro:   “Bled Out” - LaMacchia

Aye Tias was born into a family of NYC immigrants, they migrated from the Bronx, NYC to Atlantic County, New Jersey. From an early age he grew up in a household of music. His mother was a pianist. He grew up as a child idolizing Michael Jackson. In his pre-teens Tias began making hip hop music. He enjoyed 90s hip hop and wanted to emulate the throwback sound. His main influence who made him want to rap was Redman. He was also influenced from the Rawkus Records era of hip hop including artists such as Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Pharoahe Monch as well as Common. His brother was into the hardcore scene so Tias was also exposed to heavier musical acts such as Candiria and Shai Hulud. His household in his childhood was difficult due to personal family issues. His father had been permanently crippled in a motorcycle accident so his mother was left to take care of the family. Growing up Tias worked odd jobs at gas stations and grocery stores. At age 15 Tias started taking rap serious when he had heard an older friend “Shrine B” making hip hop music. He felt a huge inspiration and began writing everyday. Around this time Tias participated heavy into the battle rap scene. He would take the train up to NYC and attend Smack URL events for years on end. He made records with the likes of battle rappers such as Charlie Clips, Goodz Da Animal and Math Hoffa. He went by the stage name “Hindsight” but later changed it to “Aye Tias”. Tias attended Mercer County Community College where he took fine arts. After graduating he then attended NYFA in Manhattan. Shortly after Tias and a few of his friends from NYC & DC got together and moved out to Los Angeles together. He spent the next 5 years there working on set for indie films as well recording more music. He had started his own group called “Cult 45” which consisted of R&B singer “Modern Philosophy”, DC rapper “301Lo” and Brooklyn rapper “Reel”. The group was short lived due to each members personal lives conflicting with the schedule. Aye Tias went back to being a solo act. He then dropped his debut release “Grasshopper” which was a combination of an EP and a mixtape. The project was engineered by rapper/singer Kris Misfit. He also released his own shortfilm titled “Corey” which showcased school bullying awareness. Aye Tias migrated to the Bay Area where He is working on his upcoming project “1-0”. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_6aenoRLlIGeXWgZDdGstw https://www.instagram.com/troy_tias https://soundcloud.com/user-536058572?fbclid=IwAR2mzGUTlAdCHXwZPQJAoBf5Hept6Mov-7PzZNNzQ7HOVTSR7RbQHtwQ910 --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Episode 6 We Win Together, We Fail Together with Kevin Castle Kevin Castle or Kevin Scondotto, came from a large family of NYHC bands, Inhuman, Confusion, Lament, Shutdown and the Last Stand. Kevin would find his place within the scene, not on stage, but behind the scenes as a talent buyer, show booker/promoter and also as a manager later on. He would take a position working with promotion with metal labels and eventually would be given the opportunity to bring both Hardcore and Death Metal to a small capacity Queens NY club on Northern Blvd. Castle Heights and Kevin would start slow but quickly worked bringing bands not only from other boros of NYC but the east coast. It would be Kevin's ability to network and promote that would make Castle a stop for touring bands as well as up and coming acts from all over. In this conversation we talked alot about how he curated and ran the shows. His tireless efforts to book metal, rock and hardcore shows while holding down a 40 hr week job as well just shows his drive and capabilities. Over time Castle Heights became a must for bands like Hatebreed, Etown Concrete, Vision of Disorder, Candiria and many many more. Castle Heights would become world known for all bands that would eventually be known as "castle heights" bands. Sworn Enemy, Irate, Billy Club Sandwich, Everybody Gets Hurt, 5 Minute Major and others, would garnish a reputation for wild shows in the 130 cap club, full of hard dancing well beyond the 5 boros and would last until present day. What didn't seem like much at first, really shaped into something through the work Kevin would put into the Billing and constantly bringing new bands and old into the forray. Castle Heights isn't all that Kevin did, and once the club closed he would move over to Blackthorn another club and try his hand there. There is so much to be said for his ability to lay out and explain the goings ons and the business side of things. As a podcaster on the very well known wrestling podcast, Don Tony and Kevin Castle show, He has a gift of gab and his stories and details make this 3 hr podcast fly by. The legacy of Kevin's work is seen to this day in the reverence paid across the world courtesy of the internet for the bands that called Castle Heights home. There are so many great stories and lessons that I don't want to spell them out here. There is a fandom that has grown far and wide for those bands that came from that small venue from queens throughout the world, 20 years later. Its a testament to the comraderie Kevin built, the hard work, the blood, sweat and tears he put into making Castle Heights a legendary venue in a great era of Hardcore, not only for NYHC but for everyone. You can find Kevin on FB at Kevin Scondotto and @kevzcastle on twitter you can find his podcast on youtube

Hans grew up in Tucson AZ where he started playing and singing in bands when he was 15.  His early audio experiences started with using  borrowed 4 track cassette machines to make mix tapes of hip hop and punk tunes recorded from vinyl. Hans would compress/eq and change level for each tune so that those tapes would play down like commercially released compilations.  He didn't realize it then but he was already starting his journey into mastering. Han's played the role of recording artist by signing to Sony Work Group fresh out of college in 96 with his group Maypole. He toured for a few years opening for Wallflowers, Smoking Popes and Our Lady Peace.  By 98 it all ended... and Hans ultimately transitioned to the studio side of things. After mastering a friends record in early 2000 and receiving many referrals as a result, Hans started what was the beginning of a love affair with mastering.  By 2005 he was mastering full time. Chapter 92: "Let The Song Write Itself" ...as read by Carley Coma of Candiria (Recorded on Monday January 23, 2017) Carley Coma, lead vocalist of Candiria has done a lot of podcasts lately. We tried something a little different. Candirias' new album "While They Were Sleeping" is an outrageous concept album that had been birthed from Carleys' perspective of 9/11, people on their phones at the train station, Ferguson, a vision of the Empire State Building and inspiration from Brooklyns' largest library. I wanted to go track for track and have him walk me through it. So here it is, the podcast companion to the new Candiria album straight from the man who dreamed it up. Thank you Carley for dragging your weary behind to task and having this conversation. This podcast makes me want to do more of these. Enjoy...and BUY THIS AMAZING ALBUM! John LaMacchia, guitarist of the reactivated Candiria, guests this week on your favorite metal podcast and we dive deep into the band's new record While They Were Sleeping. In our interview we talk about the many projects he's spearheaded, how 9/11 took its toll on him and led to addiction, the dark nature of the music he creates, going back out on tour and what that means for his lifestyle, and what the future might bring. We also talk about the disappointing sales figures for Avenged Sevenfold's new album, The Stage, which sold less than half the number of first week copies as their last record did. The stunt of announcing the record one day before its release may have backfired. Do stunts and tricks work in a band's favor? Or is it counterintuitive to fake out their hardcore audience by not telling them that you're working on new material? Will this benefit or hurt the band's upcoming lawsuit with their old label? Was the label change a good idea after all? Does anyone really care? Songs: Candiria – "While They Were Sleeping"Dark Tranquillity – "Encircled"
