Hospice and palliative physician Dr. Matthew Tyler is teaching us how to have conversations with your healthcare team about what matters most to you. In addition to his work as medical director of palliative care services, Matthew educates the public about having meaningful discussions with their healthcare teams, especially the doctor. He calls it “How to Train Your Doctor”. People with serious illnesses, along with their decision-makers, can get better care if they know how to communicate their needs. Matthew tackles some of the trickiest topics with his How to Train Your Doctor social media posts. Feeding tubes, CPR/DNR decisions, confusing medical jargon, and palliative care are included in YouTube videos and Instagram posts. Matthew says it's important to determine what the patient considers a meaningful outcome, and what the goals of the patient care are. Credit for the healthcare "f-word" (medically futile) goes to Dr. Nathan Gray, M.D. of inkvessel.com. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Iron Roses over Zoom video! The Iron Roses are a passionate, unique, and beautiful group of people making music that we hope will change the world. Fueled by the injustices of our current times - their songs are the kind of protest anthems that only a group of seasoned musicians could make. Still angry, still driven, and still screaming – this is a band that will never give up the fight. It takes serious talent to write and sing songs that sound angry whilst the music lifts your spirits. So much of political punk is abrasive and unpleasant. No hooks. No melodies. But other times passionate and irate words sound incongruent with emotionless and insipid music. The Iron Roses manage something rare and commanding with music that lifts the heart coupled powerfully with lyrics that express fury and resentment of the current world.Punk as a genre has been so commodified and diluted over the last decades that it seems to be ever increasingly hard to find bands that resonate this way. That sing and play with such intensity that their authenticity cannot be questioned. That prove that true punk is alive and well and can have you dancing around your kitchen singing along at the top of your voice.Yes, we can discuss their pedigree, most notably their frontperson Nathan Gray (of Boysetsfire), and their relentless touring and political activism. But none of those things matter if the songs don't connect with the listener. And this collection of songs are going to do just that. From the opening notes of the first song the cards are on the table. The objective is clear – The Iron Roses are putting to words and music all the thoughts you've had these last few dark years. With the worldwide political climate leaning further and further from the left. With rights for many being limited and destroyed. With no end in sight. We need bands like The Iron Roses giving us a soundtrack to fight. Songs to pour our anger and frustration into when we sing along - just as they did when they wrote and recorded them – and will be doing so from stage when they hit the road hard this autumn. The beauty of seeing these six individuals singing their truth is astounding. Watching them grow from strength to strength in the last few years it is unsurprising that this record is the outcome. They, and their songs, represent such power, love, and passion – something that we need more than ever in this world today. We want to hear from you! We continue our Test Pilot series with Commander Nathan Gray, who joins us to talk about his book ‘Hazard Spectrum'. With over 140 combat missions to his name, he is among the most decorated pilots in the British armed forces and we share Nathan's journey to the top of the Fleet Air Arm, from student to F-35 Test Pilot.   But, the episode starts with the sobering account of how he walked away from an ‘unsurvivable' crash at RAF Wittering, which sadly killed his instructor. Nathan is one of the humblest heroes we have had the pleasure to interview. He is also one of our most talented pilots, flying and test flying with the Fleet Air Arm for over two decades on various aircraft including the Harrier, F-15, F-16, F-18, and of course F-35.     His career has taken him from the Californian coast of the United States to war zones in the Middle East. Nathan was part of the ground-breaking F-35 development program and conducted the first-ever F-35 launch and recovery on the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. He has also qualified as a commando green beret, paratrooper, and forward air controller.   This is an unmissable episode!   Recorded 15th August 2023  You can buy a copy of Hazard Spectrum at the Xtended bookshop through this link https://uk.bookshop.org/a/11161/9781035402519   Contact Us: GetInvolved@aviation-Xtended.co.uk    Nathan Gray  https://www.headline.co.uk/titles/nathan-gray/hazard-spectrum/9781035402519/   Please leave us a review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or your podcast playing app. Here is a link to all the pod players https://pod.link/1611149544    Aviation Xtended Partners  Royal Aeronautical Society https://www.aerosociety.com/  Global Aviation Resource http://www.globalaviationresource.com/v2/  XTPMedia https://www.xtpmedia.co.uk/  Ellie Carter https://twitter.com/dragongirl94  Show Supporters  The Aviation Historian http://www.theaviationhistorian.com/  Aviation Enthusiasts Book Club https://www.facebook.com/groups/359410134220076  Xtended Podcast family  AeroSociety https://www.aerosociety.com/events/catch-up-on-events/video-audio-archive/   AirplaneGeeks http://www.airplanegeeks.com/   PCDU https://www.planecrazydownunder.com/   Wings Over New Zealand Show http://cambridgeairforce.org.nz/WONZ_Show.html  You can shop through this Amazon link (No cost to you but a small benefit to us:  https://www.amazon.co.uk/?tag=xtenaeroradi-21&linkCode=ur1

A few weeks ago we already had a short video special when we were talking to Nathan Gray about the problems of marketing. As we said then, we will not do that regularly but every now and then. This week this special became a little longer so we decided to release it as a regular video-episode for you. We spoke to Nate Hall about the sometimes problematic constellation of a musician and a music journalist via the example of Matt Pike from High on Fire or Sleep. To point it out, we are not okay with misogyny, xenophobia, hate because of sex or gender, fascism and lot more things that shall not all be mentioned here. When Nate published a statement on Facebook a few weeks back this was enough for Thorsten to ask whether we should do an interview on exactly that topic and fortunately Nate agreed. Hope you like it and maybe it makes you think a little bit.

Hello my friends! This week, my guest is Nathan Gray, of Boysetsfire and Nathan Gray and The Iron Roses! He's a very authentic and HUMBLE human. This interview literally changed my life for good. I think we both were very honest about what we think could be improved in the punk scene in general, but also how we could improve our own bands, playlists, etc. How it's important to speak about how we want to make the scene more inclusive, but also look at our own behaviors and thoughts. Wow! I really opened my heart about how sad I am sometimes when I notice some people's reactions and how I sometimes don't know how to deal with this. I think we both put a lot of nuances. WOW ! Amazing moment!!!   We also talked about his music projects and how he incorporates different genres in his songs, about his lyrics, touring projects, the new vinyl pressing of the album rebel Songs that will be available on Iodines records in a few weeks, about BSF, etc. This interview is really important for me.    Enjoy! Comics. Cartoons. Graphic Novels. Graphic Medicine.  I'm not sure what to title this podcast but I've been looking forward to it for some time.  Heck, I'm not even sure to call it a podcast, as I think to get the most out of it you should watch it on YouTube. Why, because today we have Nathan Gray joining us.  Nathan is a Palliative Care doctor and an assistant professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins. He uses comics and other artwork to share his experiences in palliative care and educate others about topics like empathy and communication skills.  His work has been published in places like the L.A. Times, The BMJ, and Annals of Internal Medicine.   We go through a lot of his work, including some of the comics you can see on our blog post. However if you want to take a deeper dive, check out his website “The Ink Vessel” or his amazing twitter feed which has a lot of his work in it.

Normally we do not do something like a news segment, because we think that there are much better sites for that. However, this one is somewhat different: a few days ago, Nathan Gray posted a longer text on his socials saying that he has to speak about his inner struggles with the promotion of his last album Rebel Songs and how he has to cope with the inadequacy of the marketing compared to the record. As this is a topic that interests us a lot as well, we met up for a short special interview and talked about it all, from different angles and perspectives and in detail. We consider this short interview one of our best to date. Tell us what you think! Thorsten sat down with Nathan and they talked about how he thinks that the promotion for the new record did not reflect on the nature of the songs and represented only a small part of Rebel Songs. He also clearly said that it was not about blaming anyone but him as he signed off on those things. They also looked at it from a historical perspective and set the whole discussion into deep and meaningful contexts with Nathan giving us a lot of insight into his inner turmoil and the result of it all. Give this one a good listen and think about the problems of marketing and promoting records in our time and day as this is definitely something to be aware of in a time when one can spent every minute of the day listening to a song from a new record. We wish Nathan all the best for his way and we can only encourage you to listen to the record once again.

Nathan Gray has released his latest album with his band "The Iron Roses" in with the personality of a preacher, and the heart of a revoultionary, not so much Che, or even George Washington, but more, Joe Strummer, yeah, that's it... He gives us this great "East Coast" indie rock feel with the hope to change the world, by looking back at what we have tried to do for so long, and what has, and has not worked. We talked about the music we love, the people that inspired, the feelings that made us all move, and some very introspective points, that I still find myself churning over. This new album matches the passion you feel when he talks, and, he has some great music beyond this album you just need to listen to, and be moved by. facebook youtube instagram #nathangray #lgbtqartists #theclash #theironroses #gonzomusicjournalism #rebelsongs #generationx #theclash #billyidol #midnightoil #thealarm #newmodelarmy

We had the pleasure of interviewing Nathan Gray of Nathan Gray & The Iron Roses, and BoySetsFire over Zoom video!  In support of the new record, Rebel Songs, melodic alt-punk band Nathan Gray & The Iron Roses has just announced a 20-date US tour with BlackGuyFawkes. Kicking off on February 25, 2022 in Providence, RI, the tour winds its way west making several stops out to Milwaukee, WI (3/7), Chicago, IL (3/9), back east with a show in Brooklyn, NY (3/16), and ending in Philadelphia, PA on March 18th.With nearly two years absent from the road, the prospect of upcoming tour dates thrills frontman Nathan Gray.  “It's the connection that I am most excited about,” he smiles. “Any time I am not on the road, there is an intense void in my life because being on stage is like my personal therapy couch. There is a very palpable energy exchange that happens within live music. It's very symbiotic - I need my audience as much as they need me! Not being able to tour for so long was a real challenge for me to stay above the darkness mentally - that's why I wrote the album that I did!”Refusing to allow this confinement due to COVID to block his creativity, Gray and band turned inward to music and created one of their most anthemic and passionate albums to date. Fired up by both the isolation as well as in response to the division caused by the previous administration, they created a stellar album of fists-raised rallying cries. While the tempo and delivery of his current music may not be as aggressively rapid as his output of his hardcore roots in BoySetsFire, the passion and conviction is still very much alive in the alternative Rebel Songs. The 12 track album was produced by Brian McTernan (Thrice, Hot Water Music, Circa Survive) and radiates the roaring renegade energy that the title suggests.  We want to hear from you!
