This week on Thoughts Off The Stem, we're telling university party stories. I have a huge appetite for fun. My first year at university consisted of a lot of drinking, laughs and good times and very little school work. I'm not saying it was the right move but it definitely left me with some fun stories to tell. When I was younger I was always looking for the party. Once I got to university I was ready to do whatever I wanted. Without someone to over see what I was doing, I neglected everything that wasn't at the bottom of a bottle. Partying was me jam for sure. I met a lot of cool people and spent many nights with a bunch of the football team testing the limits of my chugging capabilities. The combination of free flowing booze and the wheel chair my roommate had stolen from his grandmother. He used it as a desk chair. We used it as a party favour, traversing the hall ways doing wheelies and spins seeing who could hold their wheelie as long as possible without up ending ourselves in a door way. This one fate full night, I may or may not have commandeered the chair on a trip to the bar. Being 18 and in university I had missed out on a few bar trips at this point. So with a stomach full of booze, wobbly legs, a fake id and a simple mode of transportation I decided to tag along on a night out. So load up your bong, heat up the dab rig or roll up your favourite strain and join the sesh for some hijinks. Hope you enjoy! This relatable conversation is one for parents with kids of all ages. -- Do all kids drink alcohol before they graduate high school? Is this a thing? Today we are breaking down the youth and parent perceptions and norms around underage drinking with Beth Bruton from Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems. We discuss all the surrounding variables that influence youth's perception of alcohol including social media, peer influence, and family modeling. We also talk about how although some parents may serve alcohol to their kids with best intentions of teaching them to be responsible, studies show that kids that are given alcohol at home underage are more likely to drink more often and larger amounts–but most parents don't know this–we don't know what we don't know. Beth gave great tips on ways to talk to your kids about underage drinking and how to set up strategies to give your kids an out if they are in a risky situation. The folks at drugfree.org recently released a guide to help parents understand current trends among teenagers in regards to alcohol consumption. In the guide, parents are given four answers to the question, “Why do young people drink alcohol?” The first answer is not surprising at all: I drink alcohol because my friends do. All of us know the push and pull of peer pressure from our own teenage years. Of course, media and advertising contribute to this everybody does it reality through glamorizing alcohol consumption. The second answer given by kids is that they drinking as a normal part of being social. Again, media has played a role in this. Third, kids say that alcohol helps them feel less anxious or depressed. And finally, there's a reason given that simply boggles the mind: my parents are ok with it. Parents, when you are lenient, permissive, hosting parties, and providing a bad example, your kids are more prone to drink. Let's get wise and do the right thing.

We all know what it's like to get caught in a negative cycle with our kids. They break the rules, we crack down, they retaliate, then the whole thing happens over and over again. All we want is to keep the peace, but it feels impossible when teens constantly test our boundaries and nerves! The truth is, it's not easy to implement discipline and still maintain a positive relationship with teens. We want to set rules, but we don't want teens to think we're suspicious of them. We want to maintain authority without being a tyrant. How can we keep our close bond with teens while enforcing the rules? To find out, we're talking to Darby Fox, author of Rethinking Your Teenager: Shifting from Control and Conflict to Structure and Nurture to Raise Accountable Young Adults. Darby is a child and adolescent family psychologist with a private practice in Connecticut. She has over 20 years of experience working with families, and is here to help us take a new approach to our communication with teens. In our interview, Darby and I are discussing why we need to understand our kids' mindsets, why parents should rethink the sex talk, and how we can enforce discipline without sacrificing our relationship with our kids.
