Lots going on with this episode of Talkin' Rock. Teemu Mäntysaari starts us out by talking about his year in Megadeth, how he became a member, how his life has changed, hockey, and more. Chris Jericho's Rock N' Wrestling Rager At Sea Cruise will be in early 2025. Chris talks about the cruise's success and how it started. We also discussed the Jane's Addiction brawl, the new Vince MacMahon documentary, and a little hockey talk. P.J. and Steve from Trixter are up next. They're out on tour and stops at the Token Lounge on September 22nd. We talk about early tours, their 40-year career, touring pranks, and much more. The Rival Sons are out on tour with Clutch so Scott Holiday was cool enough to hop on with me. Mr. Fuzzlord told me about the tour, meeting Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, what he learned from Black Sabbath's Toni Iommi, and lots more. We wrap up this episode with Detroit's own Vinnie Dombrowski from Sponge. Their album 1994 comes out on October 11th and features nothing but cover songs from that year, the year they started. He tells me why they did that, what songs are included, and what's in their future. Thanks for listening!!
As a teenager, did you ever fantasize about sitting at home when there was a knock at the door, only to find that there stood 3 young California Girls ready to take you on an adventure for the night? Well Scott Holiday, lead guitarist of Rival Sons, didn't have to dream about it because it happened to him on June 10, 1995 as an 18 year old living in Huntington Beach. So as a red-blooded American boy, he naturally jumped in with them to The Hollywood Bowl to see Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. But the story takes a turn when an unexpected addition to the evening comes in the form of a party favor before the show starts. From there it's a journey great music, bright lights, giggly girls, a quest to find the car and a trip back to Huntington Beach. It was a memorable night for Scott (and I'm sure for the ladies as well) and now he and Rival Sons are making memories on co-headliner bill with Clutch in the US this fall. Following up on last week's 2023 in Review Part 1: Albums, Authors & Podcasters, now we're focused on the concerts that we covered on the show (and the ones we didn't), the artists & legends we interviewed and reveal our Top 10 Ugly American Werewolf in London episodes of 2023. Thought The Wolf had to leave Amsterdam for his homeland early in 2023, he didn't sell all the concert tickets he bought. He made a trip back in April to see Metallica on the first 2 nights of their No Repeat Weekend Tour. And The Wolf met up in Amsterdam with Action Jackson over the summer to take him to his first ever Iron Maiden concert. It was so great they went to see the boys again in Antwerp and then enjoyed some unexpected encounters at the hotel. Plus our host took The Wolfcub to see KISS one last time. We love talking with the talented musicians who make the rock music we love and we were honored to host an array of great guests from up and coming artists like Jimmy Maddon to legends like Terry Reid and Jim McCarty of The Yardbirds. Talking to Steve Kilbey of The Church was a treat and getting to know rockers in their prime like Scott Holiday of Rival Sons and Oliver Wakeman who we'll be seeing for years to come And stay tuned as we unveil our Top 10 episodes (by download) for 2023. The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded
Scott Holiday, the guitarist and songwriter behind Rival Sons, a group known for seamlessly blending classic rock with The post Scott Holiday – Rival Sons appeared first on The Strange Brew .
It's all about the yin and yang … and the heavy guitar tones when Scott Holiday of Rival Sons plugs in and rocks out onstage. This year, the band has got something special cooking: a pair of albums, the just-released Darkfighter and the upcoming Lightbringer, speaking of yin and yang.On the current Darkfighter tour, Rival Sons recently stopped at Nashville's Marathon Music Works and invited PG onboard their stage for a tour of Scott's gear. He's made some changes since his 2017 Rig Rundown. He's still a Firebird devotee, and that epic moustache is untouchable. But there are plenty of 6-string additions and some big changes in the amp department. Check it out!Brought to you by D'Addario AutoLock.
When we heard an advance copy of Rival Sons new album Darkfighter, we were instant fans of the band and desperately wanted to speak to someone about this rocking new record. We were happily obliged by Founder/Guitarist/Songwriter Scott Holiday - Mr. Fuzzlord himself!! Scott joined us from the road in the US ahead of a schedule that will take Rival Sons to Europe, onto some huge festival stages and back to the US in the fall. Scott was generous with his time and spirit, talking about his influences, the equipment he uses to get that fuzzy sound, writing this album (and it's companion follow-up record LIghtbringer, listen to learn when we'll hear that) and opening for some of the biggest bands in the world like Black Sabbath, KISS, Aerosmith & more. For you classic rock fans who don't know any bands if they didn't record before 1995, I guarantee you'll love this record. It's like they took everything from the 70s & 80s that we love, blended it together to make something new and it kicks @ss! Scott, who like us is a member of the MTV generation, even talked in-depth about the fun videos they made for their first three singles Nobody Wants To Die, Rapture & Bird In The Hand which portray the boys as a band of outlaws in Tarantino fashion. Every listen of this record unlocks something we didn't notice before and endears us to these guys style. Rock isn't dead as long as bands like Rival Sons are still out there making killer new music and playing it live. Recently, I was fortunate to speak with The Fuzzlord, Scott Holiday, guitarist of Rival Sons. We had a great conversation about Darkfighter, Lightbringer, the videos, and more. I really enjoy speaking to Scott because of his passion for making music, his fantastic energy, the new music he and his bandmates are creating, and his love for his bandmates comes through every time. The new album Darkfighter will be released on Friday, June 2nd. The following day, Saturday, June 3rd, Rival Sons along with The Record Company and Starcrawler will be at The Franklin Music Hall in Philadelphia. Later in the year, we will get a second album, Lightbringer, from Rival Sons. Get all of your Rival Sons information, here. Thank you so much for taking the time to listen. Markus Goldman
Scott Holiday and Jay Buchanan from the Rival Sons were nice enough to swing by the studio on a day off from their tour. They talked about the new albums they'll be dropping this year. "Darkfighter" comes out on June 2nd, with "Lightbringer" is coming out later in the year. Jay talks about how this is truly their "pandemic" album. He talked about working remotely with Scott writing the new material. "Dark Fighter is more about fighting the Darkness. With Light Bringer more about illuminating," he said. Scott added that Darkfighter is a big, epic type song. He told us something about the album that they hadn't talked about before. "There is no Darkfighter on the album Darkfighter. It opens up Lightbringer." They expanded on that, and the reason they did it, as well as why why there's two albums coming out. We talked about taking the band to the next level. Jay said their career "lives and dies by how honest we can be with our art." He said the new albums do just that. What's it like to put out an album? Simple question, right? But there's a lot of us that have never, and will never do it. Jay and Scott give me their answer to that simple question. Scott talks about writing songs that they think will transcend on stage in front of a live audience. Jay said, "Whatever songs you write, are going to be your life mantra for the next two years." He expanded on that to say, "It's a new narrative that you allow yourself to live." Scott talked about the current state of rock music. "People have told us for years that we're the savior of Rock and Roll." He eluded that the fans that are really protecting the music form. There was a few things coming up they couldn't talk about, but they said their year is full. -Meltdown- https://www.rivalsons.com/ https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown/ https://wrif.com/podcasts/track-x-track/
Since their debut album in 2011 Rival sons have been nonstop and have made a giant fanbase in the process worldwide. On June 2nd they will release their 8th studio output called Darkfighter. An album that Scott says has the vibe and the music they were truly aiming for, but not to judge it on their first single "Nobody Wants to Die." As 2023 sets up to be the biggest year yet for Rival Sons we cover everything from sobriety and coffee to finally being let out of the cage to truly do what they love, play music and tour!
On this episode of The Fred Minnick Show, lead singer of rock band Rival Sons, Jay Buchanan, joins Fred. Buchanan, previously a solo artist, helped form Rival Sons in 2008 with guitarist Scott Holiday. Since 2009, the band has released one EP and six full-length albums, citing musical influences ranging from Prince to Van Morrison. During this week's interview, Jay and Fred sip whiskey (because, of course) and discuss topics such as the band's forthcoming album, side projects, ascots, drinking on stage and even modern masculinity. Whiskeys tasted: Michter's Straight Bourbon (14:22) Peerless Rye Cherry Cola (26:20) M.B. Roland Single Mash (45:06) EPISODE SUMMARY Fred and Jay talk about a wide variety of things, such as: Jay doesn't think rock music is as prevalent as it once was, citing several reasons including recording technology and the way labels promote music today. "Hip hop rules the world," he tells Fred. He also talks about rock bands "locking arms" and uniting, per an interview he did with Rolling Stone, as a way of lifting up all rock acts. Fred gets Jay to come clean on drinking all the Michter's straight bourbon Fred had sent him for the show. The two agree that it's a great "every day pour." American whiskeys versus Scotch whiskeys and other non-American whiskeys. Life as a rock band during the ongoing pandemic, and Jay losing part of his identity. "It's forced us to be more introspective and take stock in why we really do what we do," he says. Fred talks about his life during the pandemic, losing Bourbon & Beyond and other opportunities, and going from that to remaking himself into a YouTube streamer. Fred quickly discovers that Jay has quite the whiskey palate. Jay talks about his minimalist approach to drink before and during shows. In introducing the Peerless Rye to the tasting, Fred talks about the difference between sour mash fermentation and sweet mash. They talk about the slow emergence of rye whiskey and where it might head, and that leads them to talking about trends in alcohol and drinking in general. White Claw rears its head. A spirited discussion of modern American masculinity then takes place. The M.B. Roland they taste only saw a release of 86 bottles. Quote of the show: "When you're drunk, you can't do much ... except drink more." Jay talks about Rival Sons coming together in 2008 and how he originally expected it to simply be a side project to his solo career, as well as what's next for the band. The show wraps with Fred asking Jay which of the three whiskeys was his favorite. His answer is extensive, but the Peerless barely eked out the win. QUOTABLES Jay compares rye whiskey to modern American masculinity: "With men, you see the urban lumberjack aesthetic come up everywhere - guys want to have beards, guys want to wear flannel, guys want to wear jeans that will last longer than they will. Guys want to have one pair of boots that are going to the best pair of boots. I think that the return to the masculine culture with men in America, along with that, we're going to watch rye come up because rye is directly related to that rugged individualism."
