In this fantastically informative episode with Dr. Bonnie J. Kaplan, we explore the direct connection between mental health and nutrient intake. The evidence detailed in this episode and in Bonnie's book, The Better Brain is clear and consistent across populations. It is my hope that by releasing this episode folks will be inspired to change their diets and see for themselves the mental health benefits that transpire. I believe that a proper diet can keep us off medications or help us decrease them, but if you are on psychiatric medications make sure to work with a professional if you plan to take micronutrients. You may need medication adjustments. In this episode, we uncover: * what happens to our mental health when we eat processed foods * the definition of what Bonnie calls a "hungry brain" * how the brain gets vitamins and nutrients and what it does with them * the ways focus changes the brain's needs * what it means to eat your cofactor * why focusing on one single nutrient or vitamin will not fix your brain health * why eating whole foods isn't always enough for brain health and what to do about it * how minimally processed foods could be better than nonprocessed * what to look for in a broad spectrum multi-nutrient * cases of psychosis and trauma being modulated by micronutrients * what Bonnie hops all mental health clinics will tell their clients when they're first referred * and so much more... Bonnie's formal training and degrees (masters, PhD, postdoc) were from the University of Chicago, Brandeis University, the West Haven, Connecticut, VA Hospital Neuropsychology Laboratory, and Yale University Department of Neurology. When Bonnie is asked how she became interested in Nutrition and Mental Health, she explains that her training in psychology and neuroscience led her to focus on the biological basis of human behaviour. For many years she studied the role of nutrition in mental illness and brain development. Three awards that she feels very honoured by: are her election in 2017 as one of 150 Canadian Difference Makers in Mental Health, the Dr. Rogers Prize for excellence in complementary and alternative medicine because of her research on nutrition and mental disorders, and in 2021 chosen as one of the top7over70 in Calgary. As Bonnie approached retirement, she decided to focus on two tasks. One was knowledge translation -educating the general public about the role of diet in creating vulnerability to mental health problems. From that goal, her book The Better Brain emerged, written for the general public with Professor Julia Rucklidge, and published in 2021 by Harper Collins. Her second goal was to raise funds to support her junior colleagues who were leaving the field because of their inability to convince government funding agencies that scientific research on nutrition and mental health was worthwhile. She established two charitable funds, one in Canada (managed by the Calgary Foundation) and one in the U.S. (managed by the FJC Foundation in New York City). So far, the two funds have attracted over $1 million CAD. All of it has been distributed, mostly to support clinical trials and biomarker research in relation to nutritional treatment of mental health. Scientists in Canada, the U.S., and New Zealand have been recipients of those funds, and now additional money is being sought for further assays of epigenetic, microbiome, and metabolomic indicators of the benefit of micronutrient treatment. Bonnie J. Kaplan, Professor Emerita at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, Canada, and author of The Better Brain: Overcome Anxiety, Combat Depression, and Reduce ADHD and Stress with Nutrition, expresses bewilderment at the reluctance of people to explore a subject so fundamental to our biology. What she's referring to is the intricate relationship between nutrition and brain function, which significantly impacts mental health and overall well-being. Despite common misconceptions, Dr. Kaplan asserts that nutrition is crucial to brain health, mental stability, and life quality. Throughout her career, she has faced numerous challenges in advocating for the use of nutrients in treating mental health issues, emphasizing the biological underpinnings of behavior, and highlighting the impact of nutrition on brain development and function. Intrigued? Dive deeper into: The prevalence of irritability and mood dysregulation across various mental health conditions The notion that mental illness often stems from inadequate nutrient support for the brain Dr. Kaplan's recommendations for a brain-boosting diet The scientifically backed advantages of incorporating a comprehensive micronutrient formula alongside a nutritious diet The role of media coverage in shaping public perception and the challenges it poses Interested in learning more? On todays podcast we are featuring Bonnie J Kaplan, PhD, is Professor Emeritus in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. She has published widely on the biological basis of developmental disorders and mental health – particularly, the contribution of nutrition to mental health. Her efforts to educate about the role of nutrition in brain health resulted in her selection in 2017 as one of 150 Canadian Difference Makers in Mental Health, in honour of Canada's 150th birthday. In 2019 she was honoured with the Dr. Rogers Prize for Excellence in Integrative, complementary medicine. In 2021 she was chosen as one of the top “7 Over 70” in Calgary, partly for her book The Better Brain, written with Professor Julia Rucklidge and published by Harper Collins, as well as her two charitable funds supporting research by junior colleagues who study nutrition and mental health (over $1 million CAD distributed). Her primary goal is to bring nutrition education and treatment to the forefront of mental health care. The best news is Dr. Kaplan is coming to my hometown Parry Sound on November 2nd to present at the Stockey Centre on the topic of “The Importance of Nutrition for Brain Health and Resilience.” This event was going to be hosted at the Parry Sound Hospital but apparently a doctor there was opposed to it who essentially stated her work was not based in science. I found this so hard to believe since Bonnie has spent so much of her life in the field of research, and has 142 peer reviewed publications to prove it. So as a community of passionate people about a food as medicine approach as an incredible tool to enhance mental health we found a way to host her here ANYWAYS and for FREE to the general public. So all are welcome to attend this event which will be held from 1pm – 3pm, November 2nd at the Stockey Center in Parry Sound. All donations are going to two local programs to provide fresh food for their participants at The Drop supporting local youth and Hope Pregnancy Center supporting local pregnant moms. Ep 368 - Your Brain on Fruits and Veggies Guest: Dr Bonnie Kaplan Imagine, if you will, a wonder treatment that can help you overcome anxiety, combat depression, reduce ADHD and stress. “What a blessing that would be!” says Dr. Bonnie J. Kaplan, a research psychologist and co-author of “The Better Brain.” Kaplan goes on to say, “There is a paradigm-shifting approach to treating mental disorders with food and nutrients.” For Kaplan, that approach is a broad spectrum one – an approach that was contrary to the magic bullet approach to medicine. She says, “When we learned about nutrition, it was one nutrient, one disorder… That's not the way the brain works. Your brain needs all 30 micronutrients: a mix of vitamins and minerals.” At the turn of the century, her research was met with skepticism and outright rejection. In fact, she was shut down. “Health Canada shut down my research,” says Kaplan. “The Director General of Health Canada told me to stop my clinical trial and return all the patients to their psychiatrist and get them back on medication.” Naturally, no one would fund her research because, as she was told, “vitamins and minerals are of trivial importance to your mental health.” Then in 2009, she led a team of 12 scientists to determine the relationships between maternal nutrients before, during, and after gestation on maternal mood, birth outcome, and infant neurodevelopment. In 2013, Dr. Kaplan became a founding member of the International Society of Nutritional Psychiatry Research, an organization that emphasizes the importance of nutrition “above the neck.” In 2019, Dr. Kaplan was awarded $250,000 by the Dr. Rogers Prize for Excellence in Complementary and Alternative Medicine – money that she has added to the more than $750,000 she has committed to fund ongoing research through two donor-advised charitable funds, one in Canada and one in the United States. We invited Dr Bonnie Kaplan, the co-author of “The Better Brain,” to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the broad spectrum approach to a healthy and better brain. Dr. Bonnie J. Kaplan is a research psychologist, and Professor in the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine. For many years she studied the role of nutrition in mental illness and brain development. Now, in retirement, her passion is to teach people how our diet influences our brain and mental health. She has written a book with Julia J. Rucklidge called ‘Better Brain: Overcome Anxiety, Combat Depression and Reduce ADHD and Stress with Nutrition'. This is a paradigm-shifting approach in using food and nutrients for treating mental disorders like anxiety, depression, and ADHD and they share their original, ground-breaking research with readers everywhere for the first time. On today's podcast Nicolette and Dr. Kaplan discus the link between the brain and nutrition and how micronutrients are the foundation for brain metabolism. We need to teach adults and kids that real food can make cells grow, develop and function which can resolve the symptoms in mental disorders. Brain and gut health are related and the best thing you can do for your brain is look after your gut microbiome. They also bring up the topic of money and people thinking they can't afford to eat well. Bonnie talks about the studies done by supplementing your diet with complex micronutrient pills and how effective it can be. “The brain needs the whole spectrum of everything you can give it in balance”. A lump in the throat is a classic GP presentation, but one that often causes a lot of worry. Many people are struggling with high levels of anxiety anyway at the moment, and this may manifest physical symptoms, such as fatigue, insomnia and dysphagia. In this week's episode, we discuss how to differentiate between causes of a lump in the throat: is my patient experiencing laryngopharyngeal reflux, or could it be cancer? How do we reassure distressed patients when we need to refer them on for imaging, or a consultation with a specialist, before we can rule out a malignant cause? We also talk about how to manage a patient who has difficulty swallowing pills, and the challenges of getting children, in particular, to take medication. Our guests: Nick Hamilton is a clinical lecturer in otorhinolaryngology at UCL, and also works as a specialist registrar in otorhinolaryngology head and neck surgery at North Thames Deanery, London. Deonne Dersch-Mills is the clinical practice leader for pharmacy for paediatrics & neonatology with Alberta Health Services. She is based at Alberta Children's Hospital, Calgary. Bonnie J. Kaplan is a semi-retired research psychologist, and professor emerita from the Cumming School of Medicine, Calgary.
