He begins by laying out five non-negotiable criteria that any sustainable eating pattern must meet—energy balance, metabolic health, adequate protein, micronutrient sufficiency, and long-term adherence—before introducing a practical rubric for evaluating different diets. Using this framework, Peter walks through the ketogenic, carnivore, vegan, and Mediterranean diets, highlighting their strengths, ideal candidates for each, and common pitfalls such as micronutrient gaps or adherence challenges. He explains why this guidance is aimed at people who feel overwhelmed by diet choices, not zealots defending a single approach, and provides practical advice on using tools like DEXA scans, lab markers, continuous glucose monitors, and symptom tracking to assess whether a diet is truly working. Send us a textThe effects of protein restriction on metabolism, liver hormones, brain, and behavior.Episode Summary: Dr. Christopher Morrison talks about how animals sense and prioritize nutrients like protein, discussing defense mechanisms for essentials such as oxygen, water, sodium, and energy; the brain's role in detecting protein deprivation via signals like FGF21; trade-offs between growth, reproduction, and longevity under protein restriction; and reconciling high-protein diets for satiety and muscle maintenance with low-protein benefits for metabolic health and lifespan extension.About the guest: Christopher Morrison, PhD is a professor and researcher at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he has worked for over 22 years focusing on nutrition, metabolism, and chronic diseases like obesity and diabetes.Discussion Points:The body prioritizes nutrients hierarchically: oxygen and water first, then sodium, energy, and protein, with weaker defenses for carbs or fats.Animals develop specific appetites for deprived nutrients, like salt or protein, often through post-ingestive learning rather than just taste.Protein restriction (e.g., 5% vs. 20% in diets) increases food intake and energy expenditure in mice to maintain protein levels, even at the cost of extra calories.FGF21, a liver hormone, signals protein deprivation to the brain (via NTS region), driving protein-seeking behavior and metabolic changes; it's essential for low-protein responses.Protein restriction extends lifespan in lab animals by suppressing growth signals like IGF-1 and mTOR, but may impair immunity or wound healing in real-world conditions.High protein aids satiety, weight loss, and muscle building, but overconsumption may shorten lifespan; optimal intake depends on age, activity, and goals (e.g., not for pregnant or elderly). No one-size-fits-all for protein: mild restriction may benefit middle-aged sedentary people for health, while athletes need more; balance avoids excesses.Related content:M&M 106: Diet, Macronutrients, Micronutrients, Taste, Whole vs. Processed Food, Obesity & Weight Loss, Comparative Biology of Feeding Behavior | Stephen Simpson & David Raubenheimer*Not medical advice.Support the showAffiliates: Seed Oil Scout: Find restaurants with seed oil-free options, scan food products to see what they're hiding, with this easy-to-use mobile app. KetoCitra—Ketone body BHB + electrolytes formulated for kidney health. She has documented a wide range of deficiencies—of B vitamins, vitamins A, C, and D, critical minerals like zinc and magnesium, even full-blown scurvy. These are precisely the patients who are most likely to benefit from nutritional support. Discovering obstacles to compliance is a key element to effect their health transformations. Dr. Wallace believes that individualized care is the key to reversing long-standing health conditions. She mentors medical students in the first-of-its-kind Functional Medicine program at a medical school. She has also co-authored a landmark paper arguing for wellness self-care by doctors, to stave off burnout and to help them be better role models for patients.

Plants need a couple of really important chemicals to give them a healthy life and growth. We all know the top three elements: Nitrogen (N), Phosphate (P) and Potash (K), but Magnesium (Mg) should also be in the line-up of important nutrients A lack of any of the mentioned nutrients will show specific symptoms on the Plants: A lack of Nitrogen (which supports leaf-growth) makes leaves looks small and weird – often quite yellow, especially the older leaves. Nitrogen is often transported by the plant from old leaves to the younger leaves, to give them some small chance to survive and keep photosynthesis going. Phosphorus deficiency (important for root growth): Purpling of leaves; you can see that clearly in tomatoes. In severe cases the leaves will start to die around the edges. A lack of Potash (potassium – stimulates flowers and fruits) often shows up in the form of chlorosis (yellowing of the leaves in the area between the veins). Even the young leaves are struggling and show wrinkling, which often causes them to die. Few Flowers and/or fruit is a dead give-away. A Magnesium deficiency (stimulates Photosynthesis) is characterised by distinct curling of the leaves as well as that Interveinal chlorosis (yellowing between the veins) mentioned before. Sometimes the leaves get a red tinge or lots of brown dead spots on the leaves… a real mess! The Micronutrients are needed by plants in much smaller quantities, yet they are absolutely important to keep your plants in good condition A lack of Micronutrients can create all sorts of troubles: stunted growth, dark green veins in yellowing leaves, die-back of stems and twigs, smaller leaves with die-back, leaf scorching, and discolouration… It's not difficult to find the symptoms. There are many types of fertilisers on the market: the “general fertilisers” often have an NPK code on the package – some are granular, some are in liquid form. Higher N will stimulate green matter (leaves). Higher Phosphate is great for root crops. Higher K stimulates Flowering and Fruit set. But the “Trace elements” are the packets that will look after most of the Micronutrients; we often forget those! Micronutrients also come in different formulae – some gardens (and soil conditions) need more than others. You can even buy some Nori (のり) at the supermarket: Japanese seaweed! It's harvested from the ocean, the largest nutrient trap on the Planet! It has lots of trace elements that are useful for your garden, made from rinsed seaweed. Check that it has less than 4%, so you know it has been rinsed, and the amount of salt has been reduced – too much salt is not good for the plants! 5 Things I Would Do If I Were Tired All the Time in Menopause

The Flipping 50 Show

So many women say they're tired all the time in menopause.  Even those who do exercise to improve health, which would include energy levels, will often say, “I'm tired all the time.”   Let me share what I would do, and actually did at the end of 2019 when I found myself recovering from a big year of mental and physical stressors. 80% of the population don't exercise, specifically 80% of women don't lift weights the minimum times per week needed for optimal metabolic health. If you are one of those 20% you should be the most energetic people in the room wherever you go! If you exercise consistently and you're tired all the time, something isn't right. It may be about the exercise you're doing, the fuel you're consuming or absorbing, the way you're handling the stressors on your plate, or a combination. There may be something more going on, but often when you have this “check engine” light going on, addressing some changes will help.   This is the best place to start to address why you're tired all the time in menopause.   1. Stop Exercising “As Usual”  The mentality “This is the workout I always do. If I don't, I will lose my fitness” makes it worse! Even though metabolism changes are documented, pushing exercise to the brink of exhaustion is not the first line of defense in fixing it.  Science states, “The basal metabolism of the female body decreases significantly, which can mean a decrease in the basal metabolic rate (BMR) of up to 250–300 kcal per day.” This inspires a diet mentality that is of the eat less, exercise more, you're not going to benefit from this.  2. Move And Eat In Small Snacks  Small movements (exercise snacks) like walking 10 minutes 3 times a day, instead of a long walk, will be better for overall fatigue. This helps sustain blood sugar levels. If you are suffering from adrenal fatigue, you may have blood sugar dysregulation and you may not have an appetite in the morning. Eating in small snacks throughout the day can stabilize blood sugar levels too. Tired All the Time Isn't “Normal”    3. Track Food To Check On Macro And Micro Nutrient Intake  Cited in studies, key preventive nutrients in menopause are:  Vitamin D Calcium Vitamin C B Vitamins Protein I would also add: Magnesium Omega-3 We need protein and micronutrients to gain lean muscle and strength.   4. Consider Lab Testing For Micronutrient Sufficiency and Cortisol Levels (saliva vs blood, dried or wet urine)  Lab testing will tell if you are sufficient in levels of micronutrients. You can take a look at, are you in norms or are you optimal?   5. Support With Adaptogens To Help The Body Help Itself  Maca, Ashwaghanda, and Rhodiola I found the most benefit personally from Maca. I felt better within a week just taking a morning dose.   These are all steps you want to take whether you are or aren't on HRT. If you're progesterone is low and that's interfering with sleep, it can make a big difference. These things just cover the basics and relate to your exercise and fitness routine.    Additional steps you want to take: Check thyroid levels with a functional doctor. Get a stool test if your digestion isn't what it should be. That will tell you the status of your good and bad gut bacteria and let you know how to feed with the right probiotics so you feed the good ones and starve the bad.  Utilize a health coach who understands optimal levels vs norms of micronutrients. A doctor is necessary to help you interpret many things like thyroid and hormones as well as getting the right tests to begin with.  Seek support from a functional doctor who can recommend specific tests that differ from your traditional physician and help you sort out any of these.    References to Why You're Feeling Tired All the Time in Menopause:  PLoS One, 2024, PMID: 38421977. In this episode, we detail connections between H. pylori and hypochlorhydria, while highlighting possible downstream effects on nutrient absorption. We examine how reduced gastric acidity can impair the liberation and assimilation of certain micronutrients, including iron, calcium, vitamin B12, and more; and we further discuss the impact of low stomach acid upon downstream digestive enzyme activation and gut microbial balance. The discussion also highlights the role of compromised gastric acidity in conditions such as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).Topics:1. Hypochlorhydria - Low stomach acid.- Aging, autoimmune gastritis, chronic PPI use, H. pylori infection.2. H. pylori - Common gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the stomach lining.- Symptoms.- Produces urease.- Ammonia neutralizes acid, creating a protective microenvironment.- Additional virulence factors and ability to form biofilms contribute to persistence.3. Gastric Anatomy & Layers- The stomach: hollow, muscular organ for mechanical and chemical digestion.- Regions: Cardia, fundus, body, and pylorus.- Layers: Mucosa, Submucosa, Muscularis externa, Serosa4. Mucosal Layer - Surface mucous cells secrete a thick bicarbonate-rich, protective mucus.- Gastric pits lead to gastric glands, which contain specialized secretory cells.5. Specialized Gastric Cells- Parietal Cells: Secrete hydrochloric acid (HCl) and intrinsic factor (IF).- Chief Cells: Secrete pepsinogen (converted to pepsin by HCl) and gastric lipase.- Role of HCl: Activates pepsin, denatures proteins, and contributes to nutrient absorption.- Intrinsic factor and vitamin B12 absorption.6. Vitamin B12 Absorption- Essential for DNA synthesis, RBC formation, neurological function.- Released from food proteins by gastric acid and pepsin.- Impaired absorption.7. Role of Gastric Acid in Broader Micronutrient Absorption- Absorption of minerals.- Soluble, ionized state.- Iron: HCl aids in preventing insoluble precipitates and supports iron absorption.8. Protective Role of Gastric Acid- Acts as a line of defense against ingested pathogens.- Maintains low microbial diversity in the stomach.- Low HCl and SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth).9. Symptoms of Low Stomach Acid- Bloating, early satiety, excessive belching.- Undigested food in stool, chronic constipation.- May reflect impaired enzymatic activation and digestive insufficiency.10. Conclusion- Multifactorial causes and downstream effects.- Optimal range of stomach acid: neither high nor low.Thank you to our episode sponsor: 1. OmneDiem®'s Histamine Digest® and Histamine Digest® PureMAX 2. Histamine Digest® Histamine Complete with DAO, Vitamin C, Quercetin, Bromelain, and Stinging Nettle Root Extract. Thanks for tuning in!Get Chloe's Book Today! #565: How Zinc Insufficiency Impacts Inflammation, Immunity & Aging – Prof. Emily Ho

Sigma Nutrition Radio

Zinc is an essential micronutrient that often flies under the radar, despite being vital for hundreds of enzymes and transcription factors involved in immunity, antioxidant defense, and DNA repair. A surprisingly large segment of the population may not get enough – an estimated 10% of U.S. individuals consume less than half the recommended zinc intake, putting them at risk of deficiency. In this episode, Prof. Emily Ho discusses how even mild zinc insufficiency can impair immune function, promote chronic inflammation, and accelerate aspects of aging. She delves into the concept of “inflammaging” – the chronic, low-grade inflammation that develops with age – and explains how inadequate zinc status can aggravate this process. The conversation also highlights emerging research on zinc's role in DNA integrity and how restoring zinc levels can reverse certain damage, underscoring zinc's broader significance in healthy aging and disease prevention. Overall, this episode provides a deep scientific look at why maintaining adequate zinc status is crucial for immune resilience and mitigating age-related inflammatory and oxidative damage. About the Guest Emily Ho, PhD is the Director of the Linus Pauling Institute and professor in the College of Health at Oregon State University. Her research focuses on understanding the mechanisms by which nutrient status and healthy foods affect the initiation and/or progression of chronic diseases such as cancer. Her work has helped drive dietary requirements and recommendations for micronutrients such as zinc for communities with susceptibility to poor nutrition.
