Dr. Bonnie Kaplan is a Professor Emerita in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Originally from Ohio, she did all her training in the US (University of Chicago and Brandeis University). Her interest in the biological basis of behavior led to postdoctoral training and then faculty research in neurophysiology at Yale University Department of Neurology and the West Haven (CT) Veterans Administration Neuropsychology Laboratory until she moved to Canada in 1979. She has published widely on the biological basis of developmental disorders and mental health, especially the contribution of nutrition to brain development and brain function. She was the founding principal investigator of the Alberta Pregnancy Outcomes and Nutrition longitudinal study (ApronStudy.ca). Si l'impact de l'alimentation ultra-transformée sur notre santé n'était pas encore suffisamment clair, deux chercheuses en nutrition et santé mentale ont récemment publié un état des lieux quant au lien entre la malbouffe et les symptômes dépressifs. Le constat est sans appel : une alimentation pauvre en micro-nutriments déclenche un phénomène appelé « faim cérébrale », qui peut entrainer des difficultés à réguler ses émotions, mais aussi davantage de violence verbale et de manifestations de dépression.Un rapport clairement établi depuis plusieurs annéesEn 2021, deux autrices scientifiques, Bonnie Kaplan et Julia Rucklidge, publient un article dans le magazine Science Alert au sujet des conséquences qu'induit la consommation de malbouffe régulière sur la santé mentale. Elles ne sont pas les premières à souligner le rapport de cause à effet. Des dizaines d'études s'y sont intéressées et montrent que les personnes qui suivent un régime de type méditerranéen, avec une grande proportion de végétaux, sont en meilleure santé mentale que les personnes qui ont une alimentation moins équilibrée.Mieux, certaines expériences révèlent que des personnes atteintes de dépression guérissent plus souvent lorsqu'elles associent leur traitement avec un régime alimentaire sain que lorsqu'elles se contentent de prendre des médicaments. Le taux de rémission passe alors de moins de 1 sur 10 pour celles qui conservent de mauvaises habitudes nutritionnelles à 1 sur 3 chez celles qui adoptent une bonne alimentation.Pourquoi la malbouffe favorise la dépression et l'anxiété ?Plusieurs pistes sont évoquées afin d'expliquer le lien entre malbouffe et dépression. D'abord, la nourriture industrielle ultra-transformée est très pauvre en micro-nutriments. Or le cerveau a besoin d'une variété d'une trentaine de ces éléments pour fonctionner correctement. En état de « faim cérébrale », l'organisme présente des dysfonctionnements et va par exemple éprouver des difficultés à résoudre les problèmes quotidiens, occasionnant stress et idées noires.Ensuite, la consommation à outrance de nourriture riche en sucre, en sel et en gras produit une inflammation systémique de l'organisme. Dans un tel état, le cerveau reçoit des molécules pro-inflammatoires qui interfèrent avec le fonctionnement normal des neurotransmetteurs. Parmi ceux-là, certaines molécules participent à la régulation de l'humeur. L'inflammation systémique aboutit donc à une moins bonne gestion des variations émotionnelles, qui peut induire l'apparition d'anxiété et de troubles dépressifs.Enfin, alors que les acides gras consommés dans le cadre d'un régime méditerranéen sont bénéfiques au cerveau, les acides gras trans et saturés omniprésents dans la malbouffe s'avèrent très mauvais pour la santé. Her interest in the biological basis of behavior led to postdoctoral training and then faculty research in neurophysiology at Yale University Department of Neurology and the West Haven (CT) Veterans Administration Neuropsychology Laboratory until she moved to Canada in 1979. She has published widely on the biological basis of developmental disorders and mental health, especially the contribution of nutrition to brain development and brain function. She was the founding principal investigator of the Alberta Pregnancy Outcomes and Nutrition longitudinal study (ApronStudy.ca). Bonnie has over 180 peer-reviewed publications and textbook contributions, and many more invited lectures. After retiring from full-time academic research in 2016, she turned her attention to raising the profile of nutrition in mental health in two ways: a) by focusing on Knowledge Translation, and b) by raising funds to help her junior colleagues who have not yet been able to convince funding agencies that this is an important topic. Her efforts to include nutrition knowledge in the care of people with mental health challenges has earned her a variety of awards, including the Dr. Rogers Prize in September 2019; and selection in 2017 as one of 150 Canadian Difference Makers in Mental Health, in honour of Canada's 150th birthday. In 2021 she was chosen as one of the top “7 Over 70” in Calgary, partly for her book The Better Brain, written with Professor Julia Rucklidge and published by Harper Collins as well as Penguin Random House. The award also was acknowledgement of her establishment of two charitable funds supporting research by junior colleagues who study nutrition and mental health. Those funds have now raised and distributed over $1 million CAD. Ep 368 - Your Brain on Fruits and Veggies Guest: Dr Bonnie Kaplan   Imagine, if you will, a wonder treatment that can help you overcome anxiety, combat depression, reduce ADHD and stress. “What a blessing that would be!” says Dr. Bonnie J. Kaplan, a research psychologist and co-author of “The Better Brain.” Kaplan goes on to say, “There is a paradigm-shifting approach to treating mental disorders with food and nutrients.”   For Kaplan, that approach is a broad spectrum one – an approach that was contrary to the magic bullet approach to medicine. She says, “When we learned about nutrition, it was one nutrient, one disorder… That's not the way the brain works. Your brain needs all 30 micronutrients: a mix of vitamins and minerals.”   At the turn of the century, her research was met with skepticism and outright rejection. In fact, she was shut down. “Health Canada shut down my research,” says Kaplan. “The Director General of Health Canada told me to stop my clinical trial and return all the patients to their psychiatrist and get them back on medication.”   Naturally, no one would fund her research because, as she was told, “vitamins and minerals are of trivial importance to your mental health.” Then in 2009, she led a team of 12 scientists to determine the relationships between maternal nutrients before, during, and after gestation on maternal mood, birth outcome, and infant neurodevelopment. A lump in the throat is a classic GP presentation, but one that often causes a lot of worry. Many people are struggling with high levels of anxiety anyway at the moment, and this may manifest physical symptoms, such as fatigue, insomnia and dysphagia. In this week's episode, we discuss how to differentiate between causes of a lump in the throat: is my patient experiencing laryngopharyngeal reflux, or could it be cancer? How do we reassure distressed patients when we need to refer them on for imaging, or a consultation with a specialist, before we can rule out a malignant cause? We also talk about how to manage a patient who has difficulty swallowing pills, and the challenges of getting children, in particular, to take medication. Our guests: Nick Hamilton is a clinical lecturer in otorhinolaryngology at UCL, and also works as a specialist registrar in otorhinolaryngology head and neck surgery at North Thames Deanery, London. Deonne Dersch-Mills is the clinical practice leader for pharmacy for paediatrics & neonatology with Alberta Health Services. She is based at Alberta Children's Hospital, Calgary. Bonnie J.
