American film director and screenwriter
POPULARITY
Filmmaker and MOVIE CRYPT favorite Darren Lynn Bousman (SAW 2-4, SPIRAL, ABATTOIR, REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA) returns to share yet another set of incredible stories from his various cinematic adventures over the last few years. As always, Bousman brings his unmatched level of candid honesty about his trials and tribulations and the humble perspective that has made him an absolute legend on this podcast. Starting off with the story of his film THE CELLO and how one of the greatest production experiences of his career suddenly turned south… to the making of his upcoming feature (tentatively titled THE MONSTER) and working with Dijon Hounsou (AMISTAD) and Lauren LaVera (TERRIFIER 2 & 3)… to the MUST HEAR second hour about how the three directors each wrestle with feeling responsible for anything that goes wrong on a production even when it was completely out of their hands… to how they deal with the disappointment of working on a project for years only to have it snuffed out in an instant… to how anxiety and depression have made them think they never wanted to make another film again and just what price “suffering for your art” can actually cost you over the long haul… this is yet another one of those conversations we only wish they would present students with in film school. It may only be March when this episode premieres but it is already a contender for best episode of the year. Don't miss it! Colleen Bousman (REC '95), Owner & Event Producer at See & Be Productions and Wildflower Experience, talks with Dr. Brian Greenwood (Cal Poly Experience Industry Management) about her life and career to date.
In this episode, Regina sits down with Traci Bousman. Traci has been the year-end amateur champion with PtHA for the last few years with her special partner, Snoopy (AKA Vested Sensation). However, she had one big goal for 2023. Traci wanted to win the all-around title at the 2023 Pinto World Championship show. However, on the night of June 17, Tulsa, Oklahoma, was ravaged by storms with winds of over 100 mph. The Pinto World Championship show was in full swing at Tulsa Expo Center and was forced to cancel before finishing all events. Feeling disappointed but grateful that everyone stayed safe, Traci and Snoopy left Tulsa, pivoted, and set their sights on winning the all-around at the Color Breed Congress. Mission accomplished! Throughout the year, Traci weighed the pros and cons of retiring Snoopy. With nothing left to prove and after a hugely successful CBC, Traci decided it was time for Snoopy to enjoy 2024 and beyond as a retired boy. With the decision made, Traci announced that she was starting an exciting new chapter for herself. Traci is embarking on a new career as a clinician and coach. Traci is ready to share her knowledge. And our industry will be better for it! Congratulations to Traci Bousman and Vested Sensation on a long and highly successful career! Happy retirement, Snoopy! While Darren Lynn Bousman might be best known for directing multiple Saw franchise entries, we're here to champion his indie horror musical about saints, sinners, and the shirking gap between them. The Matts are again joined by musical aficionado BJ Colangelo (This Ends At Prom) for a deep dive into the Vaudevillian carnival underworld known as The Devil's Carnival. Expect lots of horror musical chatter, gushing over devious rhythms, and an analysis of the religious commentary that pulsates through Bousman's production.

Welcome back to Nightmare Alley, the spooky little sidestreet podcast in the Nightmare on Film Street feed. Your horror hosts Jon & Kim are joined today by director Darren Lynn Bousman and screenwriter Josh Stolberg to discuss their new film Spiral: From The Book of Saw. It's a completely new story, with a new killer, set inside the Saw universe starring (hold onto your butts) Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock as grizzled police officers on the hunt for a vicious copycat killer. We talk death trap design, polarizing fan reactions, and (best of all) get Bousman and Stolberg to show off all the weird prosthetic body parts littering their home offices. CW: Drug use, self harm, addiction, extreme violence In celebration of the long awaited release (by someone, surely) of Spiral: From the Book of Saw, Cerise and Vicky take a trip through a torture trap all their own as they watch the first 8 Saw films back to back to back. Listen as they go through an entire afternoon, evening and into the dawn with the purest horror filth. Will they make it out alive? (of course they will, it's a movie podcast, please calm down) 7:47 Saw (2004, James Wan) We start off full of pep and dreams of a fun movie marathon, but Saw has already begun to disabuse us of this dream. 23:05 Saw II (2005, Darren Lynn Bousman) C and V welcome director Darren Lynn Bousman to their list, but before the night is out he will be their most ranked director. This is hardly the worst thing about watching Saw II 37:10 Saw III (2006, Darren Lynn Bousman) C and V lose the will to go on in the face of this absolute racist trash fire. Have they found the new worst film of all time? Still, they go on. 50:45 Saw IV (2007, Darren Lynn Bousman)The drinks have started to have their effect as C and V rank a film that, at least, is not as bad as Saw III? Also, a lot of puppet slander! 1:07:30 Saw V (2008, David Hackl) The franchise is officially eating its own tail here, and Cerise barely prevents Vicky from eating her own hand. 1:22:00 Saw VI (2009, Kevin Greutert) Long running series villain (no, not Jigsaw, series editor Kevin Greutert) takes the helm as director and...makes the best movie so far in the franchise? HUGE TWIST 1:34:35 Saw 3D: The Final Chapter (2010, Kevin Greutert) Hopes of more good movies to come are utterly dashed on the rocks of the misogynist nightmare of Saw VII. Will Cerise and Vicky ever know pleasure again? 1:50:30 Jigsaw (2017, The Spierig Brothers) Is it a reboot? A sequel? Cerise and Vicky can't go on. The sun has come up over beautiful West Philadelphia and they seem to have lost the ability to think about movies, potentially forever. 2:07:30 Spiral : From the Book of Saw(2021) Darren "The Bous" Bousman returns to the franchise, Cerise and Vicky return to theaters, and one final twist ending awaits them.
Darren Lynn Bousman had been fired from a string of assistant jobs and even told he would never work in Hollywood again when he came up with a Jigsaw-level plan to break into movies. By age 25, he had made Saw II — which opened at No. 1 at the box office. Then he repeated the feat with Saw III, and again with Saw IV.The Kansas native decided he'd done all he could with the franchise. And then he got a call that Chris Rock wanted to meet him.The result is the new Spiral: From the Book of Saw, a film that delivers all the nasty machinations that Saw fans love while also delivering a crackerjack detective story full of mystery and twists. It's a story almost as wild as the way Bousman broke in. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this episode of the saw retrospective we take a look at the fourth entire in the saw franchise directed by Daren Lynn Bouseman Saw IV is a 2007 horror film directed by Darren Lynn Bousman from a screenplay by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, and a story by Melton, Dunstan, and Thomas Fenton. It is the fourth installment in the Saw film series, the third directed by Bousman. The film stars Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Scott Patterson, Betsy Russell, Lyriq Bent, Justin Louis, and Donnie Wahlberg. The film continues the story of the Jigsaw Killer's obsession with teaching people the value of their lives and occurs roughly at the same time as the previous installment. Despite Jigsaw's death, the film focuses on his ability to manipulate people into continuing his work. The story follows Officer Daniel Rigg being put through a series of tests in order to try to let go of his obsession with saving everyone, while at the same time attempting to save his partner. The film was released in the United States on October 26, 2007, by Lionsgate. It received generally negative reviews from critics. Despite this, the film was a box office success, grossing $139 million worldwide. A sequel, titled Saw V, was released in 2008.
Buckle up, things are escalating in the Saw Cinematic Universe (SCU). Join Cate and Megan in counting the myriad traps at play in Saw II, the 2005 quick follow sequel directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and written by Leigh Whannell and Bousman. Detective Matthews is not a great cop, dad, or man in general. His character is put to the test by Jigsaw when he learns that his teen son is locked in a house with 7 others who must fight through Jigsaw's deadly puzzles to survive. The clock is ticking, the neurotoxic chemicals are pumping, and the blood is flowing. Time is running out, Detective Matthews, and Jigsaw, Megan, and Cate are watching your every move. Intro and outro music by Zach Pfeifer.

Mother's Day is upon us and what better way to celebrate than with two films about psychopathic mothers and the children who love them. First up is Mother's Day (1980) directed by Charles Kaufman, brother of Lloyd Kaufman, founder of Troma Films. It stars Tiana Pierce, Nancy Hendrickson, and Deborah Luce as a trio of girls out for an annual party weekend, but only to find a sadistic family that wants to torture them. Actress Beatrice Pons and her loyal but evil children played by Michael McCleery and Frederick Coffin round out this cult favorite. Mother's Day (2010) directed by Saw franchise favorite Darren Lynn Bousman has an all-star cast in Jaime King, Shawn Ashmore, Briana Evigan, Patrick John Flueger, Warren Kole and Rebecca De Mornay as Mother! For the past few months in Los Angeles a mysterious cult has been up to no good... or so the makers of The Tension Experience would have you believe. After months of speculation and rumors the cat was finally let out of the bag when what appeared to be an Alternate Reality Game turned out to be the lead up to: an immersive horror experience. So that's a two-fer for NoPro. Our interest was piqued. Yet there was still little in the way of information on just who was behind all the cloak and dagger shenanigans. That is, until today. The Tension Experience pulled back the curtain for the LA Times and revealed its creator as Darren Lynn Bousman, director of Saw II, III, IV and of Repo! The Genetic Opera. We were lucky enough to sit down with Bousman a couple of weeks back to talk about The Tension Experience, how a filmmaker finds himself doing immersive horror, conspiracy theories, and his deep passion for immersive theatre. Oh, and we also talk about how hard it is to get a show up and running in LA. This is one of my favorite interviews in the who series so far. I hope you dig it too.
