Interview by Kris PetersWowsers! Behold human pirates of the southern lands, ALESTORM have set their compass this way for their next expedition to the other side of the world to regale us all with their super infectious blend of modern folk and power metal. With their well-renowned A game PARTY prepped and packed, they'll be stuffing the galley full of inflatable ducks, kilts, a hurdy-gurdy player, maybe even a shark, but most importantly, drums upon drums of beer and rum! Bring your mateys, bring your best drinking hat, bring your lungs and let's fire up the biggest shindigs of 2025!!Joining them will be Nekrogoblikon, the self-proclaimed Goblin Metal warlords who are also getting their first taste of Australia. On paper, it seems a mismatch of epic proportions, but when the curtains draw open and the lights go down the only true victor will be music lovers in the crowd.HEAVY spent some time with Alestorm vocalist Chris Bowes to get more of a gauge on what to expect."It's absolute chaos," he smiled when asked what we can expect from Alestorm live. "It's a party. Everyone's gonna be drunk. Watch your head, there's gonna be a lot of crowd surfers - there always is. Oh my God, last night we were playing in France and there was a dude crowd-surfing with just a kilt. And I mean, just a kilt. He was otherwise totally naked. So of course he started crowd-surfing and the kilt was riding up, and he's got ass and balls tea bagging the entire audience as he goes (laughs). You would be sitting there watching the show then all of a sudden you feel these wet balls on your head, and you look up, and you get a face full of ass… And that was the whole show. I just kept watching these people get tea bagged. Hopefully that sort of behaviour won't happen, but anything's possible."In the full interview, Chris runs us through what has changed with Alestorm since they were last out here, explains the stage production and scale of the live set and what delights we will be getting, their reputation as a party band and living up to expectation, the response to last year's EP Voyage Of The Dead Mariner and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In the late-18th century, a group of publishers in what historian Robert Darnton calls the "Fertile Crescent" — countries located along the French border, stretching from Holland to Switzerland — pirated the works of prominent (and often banned) French writers and distributed them in France, where laws governing piracy were in flux and any notion of "copyright" very much in its infancy. Piracy was entirely legal and everyone acknowledged — tacitly or openly — that these pirated editions of works by Rousseau, Voltaire, and Diderot, among other luminaries, supplied a growing readership within France, one whose needs could not be met by the monopolistic and tightly controlled Paris Guild. Darnton's book Pirating and Publishing: The Book Trade in the Age of Enlightenment (Oxford UP, 2021) focuses principally on a publisher in Switzerland, one of the largest and whose archives are the most complete. Through the lens of this concern, he offers a sweeping view of the world of writing, publishing, and especially bookselling in pre-Revolutionary France--a vibrantly detailed inside look at a cut-throat industry that was struggling to keep up with the times and, if possible, make a profit off them. Featuring a fascinating cast of characters — lofty idealists and down-and-dirty opportunists — this new book expands upon on Darnton's celebrated work on book-publishing in France, most recently found in Literary Tour de France. Pirating and Publishing reveals how and why piracy brought the Enlightenment to every corner of France, feeding the ideas that would explode into revolution. The Worst Movie Ever Made

Steel, starring Shaquille “Big Aristotle” O'Neal, steals our heart, but you will soon see that it all falls apart. This movie may have well been a part of the DCEU, but hey, 1997 was long before Ezra Miller was caught with their Flash flaps down, so who are we to judge?  Shaq shits the sheets as a steel sporting super sucky celebrity! Wanton destruction of private property! Looney Tune metal man on a motorbike! The rocket booster hove-round! Wheelchair bound power plasma! Pirating the paraplegic without punishment! Pirating for Palestine: Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and the US/UK response

With the start of war in Gaza, the Houthi movement in Yemen decided that it would also do what it can to provide support to the people of Palestine. It decided the best thing that it could do was to attack commercial shipping lanes in the Red Sea, of the coast of Yemen. They have fired missiles, launched drone attacks, attacked ships by sea, boarded ships and taken people hostage. On 11 January, the UK and US decided that they should do something and launched a flurry of airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. This week, we look at the impact and reasoning behind the Houthi attacks on shipping lanes, the retaliatory strikes by the US and UK, and what this means for the ceasefire that only recently halted the war in Yemen. To help us understand the Houthi motives in the Red Sea, we're joined by Abdulghani al-Iryani (@AbdulGhani1959), a senior researcher at the Sana'a Center for Strategic Studies (@SanaaCenter) where he focuses on the peace process, conflict analysis and transformations of the Yemeni state. And to help us understand what the US hopes to achieve in Yemen, we speak with Gerald M. Feierstein, Distinguished Senior Fellow on US Diplomacy and Director of Arabian Peninsula Affairs at the Middle East Institute (@MiddleEastInst) and former US Ambassador to Yemen.Sign up to our newsletter here. I had never considered the business aspects of pirating until I read Katherine Howe's newest book, A True Account: Hannah Masury's Sojourn Amongst the Pyrates, Written by Herself.Every ship's captain had a vision, as did the crew. A mission steered each voyage. The crew was kept in line with its bylaws or code of conduct. Loot was allocated based on a profit-sharing plan.In this conversation, Katherine reveals why moviegoers romanticize the golden era of pirating. Not only do we get a sneak preview of the characters and the plot in Katherine's new book, but we are also reminded of our country's history of public hangings and gibbeting.About Katherine HoweKatherine Howe is a New York Times bestselling and award-winning historian and novelist. She is the author of several novels for adults and young adults, has edited two volumes of primary sources for Penguin Classics, and is the co-author with Anderson Cooper of the #1 New York Times bestselling books VANDERBILT and ASTOR. Kinsella on Liberty Podcast: Episode 415. Last year Larken Rose and I appeared on Patrick Smith's Disenthrall show, (( See KOL389 | Disenthrall, with Patrick Smith and Larken Rose: The Morality of Copyright “Piracy”. )) after Rose had posted some videos criticizing libertarians who pirated the HBO show "The Anarchists" as "poopheads," (( See "Pirating" Poopheads. )) even though he technically opposes IP. Or claims to. According to Rose, you should "throwing a couple dollars towards HBO" or something, to avoid being a poophead. He granted that someone pirating an already-leaked video file is not committing aggression (they have no contract with the creator), but they are a "jerk." Or "poop head." After all, the "creator" of the "content" put his "labor" into it and didn't "want it" to be pirated. And his "business model" depends on people "not pirating it." (( See KOL037 | Locke's Big Mistake: How the Labor Theory of Property Ruined Political Theory. )) https://youtu.be/Gt3eZBrXcyE Or something. So you are a "poophead" if you mess up their unrealistic business model. In response, I pointed out that if your goal is to produce content—audio, videos, books, etc.—to promote liberty, then you are a "jerk" if you try to paywall it and make it hard for people to access, since you are limiting your content to only rich westerners. Larken was alarmed by this observation and called me a commie, even though I never said you don't have a right to erect a paywall; only that, if you can say someone engaged in the peaceful behavior of "piracy" (( Itself a dishonest, loaded term. See Stop calling patent and copyright “property”; stop calling copying “theft” and “piracy”. )) is a "jerk," then I can say someone who is pretending to be engaged in trying to spread the ideas of liberty is intentionally blocking people from seeing it, they are also subject to criticism. This apparently blew his mind. When I challenged him, he literally conceded that poor Africans who pirate a video, even if they could never afford to pay for it, are being "jerks." (Listen from around 28 to 31 minutes.) Unbelievable. Well now he's back on this theme. Apparently he's involved in some libertarian film Jones Plantation, what appears to be a low-budget libertarian film along the lines of J. Neil Schulman's Alongside Night or the Atlas Shrugged trilogy; let's hope it's better than those (which were both terrible; see this hilarious evisceration of Alongside Night, which seems to have gotten more views than the movie itself). (I intend to buy a copy—yes, buy a copy—and watch it later.) (Pettifogging, well akshually alert: it's not really "buying" a "copy" in a (libertarian) legal sense, since you can't own information; but it's paying a price to get access to a file download. See "Selling Does Not Imply Ownership, and Vice-Versa—A Dissection," in my forthcoming Legal Foundations of a Free Society—which, yes, will be made available free online; no paywalls, baby.) [Update: as I tweeted, I bought a copy and watched it—and it's surprisingly good! Not the Alongside Night-style disaster I was expecting.] I did this response video to elaborate some aspects of IP and libertarian theory that many people are confused about. My video response took longer than expected so I broke this into three parts. Parts 2–4 to follow: Update: See: KOL416: Commentary on Larken Rose, “IP: The Wrong Question”: Part 2 KOL417: Commentary on Larken Rose, “IP: The Wrong Question”: Part 3 Update: See also Patrick Smith's Disenthrall episode commenting on this matter and also on Eric July's use of DMCA takedowns regarding images from his comics appearing on Twitter, etc. https://youtu.be/8HIoVU3n-bU And one more thing. As I wrote to some friends: Another point just occurred to me, which I forgot to mention in my 150-minute screed. It is this.
