On this episode of VRP Rocks, I'm joined by legendary guitarist Tracii Guns—founder of L.A. Guns and an early member of Guns N' Roses. From the Sunset Strip's wildest days to the release of L.A. Guns' brand-new album Leopard Skin, Tracii takes us on a journey through his incredible career. We dive into the new record, its bluesy, sleazy rock ‘n' roll feel, and why Tracii sees it as a fresh chapter for the band. He also shares stories from the early days—playing alongside Slash, forming Guns N' Roses with Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin, and what really went down in those wild 80s rock days. We also talk about the evolution of L.A. Guns, why he still loves making music, and how he keeps things fresh after all these years. Plus, Tracii gives us the inside scoop on the making of Leopard Skin, the upcoming tour, and his all-time favourite L.A. Guns song. If you love 80s rock, Sunset Strip stories, and killer new music, this one's for you!
Send us a textAlongside Boone, John Seeley (bass), Alex Wells (guitar), and Dale Myers (drums), these tight-knit guys stay connected to their homegrown roots having been around traditional instruments from a young age in piano, fiddle, and guitar instilling in them an appreciation of country-rock, bluegrass, blues, soul, and folk music. The band blends roots, blues, classic rock, soul, and, of course, Southern rock and has created an original sound reminiscent of some of the great blues-rock/Southern rock bands like the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top and Wet Willie. They also draw inspiration from some of the all-time blues/soul greats like Muddy Waters, Leadbelly and various artists from back in the classic heyday of Motown Records.OTIS is new musical blood for a new day with heavy, melodic blues-rock riffs, soaring guitar work, a pounding rhythm section, and raw, soulful vocals from Mr. Froggett. The band embraces Southern rock's hallowed past while charting their own future. With some of the legendary Southern rock bands winding it down or no longer in existence, OTIS is a proud, new torchbearer of the Southern rock/blues-rock heritage. The band's debut album, 2014's Tough Times: A Tribute to John Brim, is a raw, groove-oriented, blues drenched masterpiece that got rave reviews and was a blueprint for things to come for the band. The blistering Eyes of the Sun was released in 2018 on Cleopatra Records and more than lived up to the promise of the band's debut album. Executive produced by Grammy-winning producer Paul Nelson, who earned his stripes by playing and performing with Johnny Winter and helping Johnny win a Grammy for his highly acclaimed album, Step Back, the album solidified the band's influences into a boiling stew of rootsy, kickass, take-no-prisoners, blues-rock goodness kicked up with a bit of soul and funk spiciness. Good musical eats to say the least. And now comes Last Fool in the Line, which is a precursor to a full album that will be released sometime hopefully sooner than later (good things take time!) Canadian-born Jon Mikl Thor began his career in the early ‘70s as a champion body builder competing against the world’s strongest men and winning numerous awards along the way. But his love for heavy metal music compelled him to retire from body building and develop his skills as a musician and performer. Taking the mononym THOR, he quickly gained a devout following in the burgeoning metal scene thanks in part to elaborate and provocative live shows, which frequently featured Jon performing amazing feats of strength - bending steel bars with his teeth and exploding water bottles with his lungs! A performance on the Merv Griffin Show led to a record deal with RCA in late 1976 and the release of his debut Keep The Dogs Away. But it wasn’t until THOR’s follow-up album,1985’s Only The Strong, that he really began to flex his muscles. Thanks to fist-pumping anthems like “Thunder On The Tundra”and the powerful title track, Only The Strong became a landmark release and continues to be heralded as one of the finest metal albums of the ‘80s. As the music scene began to change in the decades that followed, THOR continued to be a champion for true metal, releasing numerous well-received studio and live albums. Then,in 2015, THOR teamed with indie giant Cleopatra Records for a new album, Metal Avenger, which featured special guest performances from many of THOR’s admirers including Henry Rollins, Fast Eddie Clarke of Motörhead, Cheetah Chrome of Dead Boys, Jay Jay French of Twisted Sister and more. A feature-length documentary film, “I Am Thor,” was released in 2016 followed by more studio albums that put THOR in collaboration with some fellow metal deities like W.A.S.P.'s Chris Holmes, Raven vocalist John Gallagher, Soilwork singer Björn Strid, Danko Jones, Anthrax's Neil Turbin, Ross “The Boss” Friedman and others! Now celebrating an incredible 50 years of headbanging domination, THOR shows no sign of slowing down. Indeed, if his newest album and recent tours are any indication, he may just be getting started!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on Toilet Radio: Jake E Lee isn't afraid of anything, including the guy that shot him multiple times. Tim Lambesis was caught on video acting violent and insane towards his wife. He responds by saying that he is a victim and this is is all HER fault, actually. SHOCKING. Sick New World tried to put dozens of bands on a one day fest and pay 10 million dollars to Metallica and Linkin Park. In related news, Sick New World Fest is cancelled. The Dead Boys and Cleopatra Records attempted to get their now-former singer to do vocals that would be replaced by an AI-Stiv Bators. To hell with these robots, man. One of the most iconic Rock Drummers of all time, Carmine Appice, is this week's special guest on the podcast! Carmine's 60+ year career has landed him in both the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame & the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame. He's been an integral member of a long list of amazing groups, including everyone from Vanilla Fudge & Cactus (who he is a founding member of) to Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Ozzy, Pink Floyd & Blue Murder. This episode is a must listen for all drummers & musicians - Carmine discusses his storied career & his influence as one of the foundational hard rock drummers - as him & Jay Jay get into the evolution of rock and metal, and who they consider to be the most influential bands during the early years of 'Heavy Metal.' Cactus just released a brand new album this summer, titled 'Temple of Blues – Influences & Friends' on Cleopatra Records. The album is available now on digital platforms, CD and as a double vinyl album. The new album contains reimagined versions of some of Cactus's most legendary songs with the current band and guests putting a new spin on these bad-ass tunes that are among the heaviest of heavy blues-rock ever recorded. Don't miss this conversation, only on The Jay Jay French Connection: Beyond the Music! Edited & Produced by Matthew Mallinger
Out of the Kentucky musical melting pot comes the blues based, rock 'n' roll band OTIS. With Boone Froggett on guitar and vocals, John Seeley on bass, Alex Wells on guitar, and Dale Myers on drums, the members of The Otis Band are staying connected to their Kentucky roots. Growing up around traditional instruments like piano, fiddle, and guitar instilled in them an appreciation for country-rock, bluegrass, gospel, and folk music. Kentucky's rich musical heritage led them to discover the Rock and Blues heroes that continue to influence the bands original material today. While it would be easy to categorize the work of OTIS as Southern Rock, being from Kentucky, their musical background is much broader. In addition to being guided by the classic rock giants of the 1960s and 70s era, the members of OTIS draw inspiration from true greats—people like Muddy Waters, Leadbelly, and the artists of Motown—to create their own unique rock and roll sound. After releasing Tough Times: A Tribute to John Brim,—Former Chess Records Blues Recording Artist— in 2014, OTIS joined Cleopatra Records in 2017, with the release of their second album Eyes of the Sun. A chance meeting with ZZ Top's Billy F. Gibbons led to the legend listening to Otis and becoming a fan—even handing their albums off to the likes of Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck! Four songs from Eyes of the Sun were also included in the soundtrack of the 2020 film Street Survivors. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support

OTIS drops by The City's Backyard this week...The Commonwealth of Kentucky has a storied music history and a large catalog of renowned artists. While it's most famous for producing more country music stars per capita than anywhere else in the United States, musicians all across the spectrum —from bluegrass to rock and roll—have called Kentucky home. Out of this musical melting pot comes the blues based, rock 'n' roll band OTIS. Four songs from Eyes of the Sun were also included in the soundtrack of the 2020 film Street Survivors.OTIS comes to The Iridium July 13th!https://theotisband.com
Drummer Carmine Appice (who is also a founding member of Vanilla Fudge and who has performed and/or recorded with Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Ozzy, and Pink Floyd, amongst others), Cactus is as heavy, bluesy, and uncompromising in its musical assault as they were 50-plus years ago.The band released its new album, Temple of Blues – Influences & Friends, June 7 on Cleopatra Records. The album merges the current members of Cactus with a big-name, star laden, ensemble of guest artists, all of whom have called the group among their biggest influences. Featured along with the current Cactus band is a who's who of blues and rock icons: Guitarists Joe Bonamassa, Ted Nugent, Pat Travers, Warren Hayes, Vernon Reid, Steve Stevens, Johnny A (The Yardbirds), Ty Tabor (King's X) and bassists Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big), Dug Pinnick (King's X) Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder), Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol), Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne), Kenny Aaronson (ex- Joan Jet and The Yardbirds), as well as members of Government Mule, Vixen, Rainbow, Zebra, and Whitesnake. Vocalist Dee Snider of Twisted Sister appears on the band's remake of the Howlin' Wolf classic “Evil,” and Appice's bandmate in Vanilla Fudge Mark Stein turns in a powerful vocal on Little Richard's “Long Tall Sally.” A second version of “Guiltless Glider,” appears as a bonus track with former Judas Priest vocalist, Ripper Owens. In addition to Appice on drums and vocals on all tracks, original Cactus guitarist Jim McCarty also appears on Temple of Blues. The new album contains reimagined versions of some of Cactus's most legendary songs with the current band and guests putting a new spin on these bad-ass tunes that are among the heaviest of heavy blues-rock ever recorded. “The music of Cactus has always been steeped in the blues tradition,” says Appice, who wanted the group to re-visit its best songs within a modern rock approach to traditional blues. “We kept hearing from so many of our music celebrity friends how much Cactus influenced them and how they would love to be a guest on a Cactus album. Any band named Cactus has got to be raw and heavy. And that's just what these boys have been and are since the band's formation in 1970. Referred to when they first formed as the “American Led Zeppelin,” the band's reputation as supreme masters of relentless hard rock still precedes them and is well deserved. Cactus was formed in 1970 from the ashes of Vanilla Fudge when Appice and former Vanilla Fudge bassist Tim Bogert's plans to form a band with Jeff Beck were canceled when Beck had a nasty automobile accident that sidelined him for a lengthy period-of-time. The original lineup featured Appice, Bogert, former Mitch Ryder guitarist Jim McCarty and singer Rusty Day from Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes. This lineup released three classic albums - Cactus (1970), One Way... or Another (1971), and Restrictions (1971) – all of which charted in the Billboard Top 200 and that still hold up well today. Carmine's playing has also been a huge influence on drummers including Joey Kramer (Aerosmith), Neal Peart (Rush), Phil Collins (Genesis), Brian Taylor (Queen), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and countless others. He was inducted into the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2014. His best-selling drum instruction book The Realistic Rock Drum Method was first published in 1972 and has since been revised and republished as The Ultimate Realistic Rock Drum Method. Carmine also published his best-selling memoir, Stick It!: My Life of Sex, Drums & Rock 'n' Roll, in 2016. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This month’s second part of the monthly new release series is bookended by a pair of…well, let’s be honest…pretty bizarre cover albums. The first set contains tracks from the “new” duets album by Glen Campbell. How can it be new when he’s been dead since 2017? Well, in 2011 he released an album, Ghost On the Canvas (his 61st!), that featured his versions of songs by artists you would never think he’d even acknowledge. For this new one, Glen Campbell Duets: Ghost on the Canvas Sessions, the producers have brought in other artists to add their vocals. I just couldn’t stomach the idea of Sting singing a Paul Westerberg song, so I went with a couple of different tracks. How did Exene and John Doe from X end up on “Any Trouble”? And does anyone really believe that country star Eric Church has even heard of Guided By Voices? It just doesn’t seem possibe. As if that’s not crazy enough, the last main set of the show features a handful of tracks from a new tribute album released by Cleopatra Records. Lance Lopez is an American blues rock and Texas blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Lopez has been influenced by Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Jeff Beck has described Lopez as "a very exciting and intense blues guitarist". Lopez has spoken over the years about being mentored by both Billy Gibbons and Johnny Winter. Lopez was age 16 at the time he met Gibbons, and they have remained friends throughout. Over the period between 2008 and 2011, Lopez toured in Europe extensively, playing at larger music festivals and supporting acts including ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, and Rod Stewart. In 2009, Lopez had signed a new recording contract with MIG (Made In Germany) Music / String Commander, who were based in Hanover, Germany. In 2010, the album Salvation From Sundown, which was produced by Jim Gaines was released by MIG. It was issued in limited edition format alongside a DVD of the Rockpalast concert recorded on July 25, 2009. It was deliberately arranged in a Texas blues style, which led to Jeff Beck calling Lopez, "a very exciting and intense blues guitarist". In March 2012, MIG Music released the sixth album from Lopez, Handmade Music. As with the previous release, the album was produced by Jim Gaines and recorded at the Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2012, Supersonic Blues Machine was formed by Lopez, the drummer Kenny Aronoff, and the bassist and record producer Fabrizio Grossi. They released their debut album, West Of Flushing, South Of Frisco, which was recorded mainly by the three musicians separately and using Pro Tools technology to bring the various elements together. The same principle was used in selecting the guest musicians tracks to be added to the overall mix. The band was 'augmented' on the recording by Billy Gibbons, Robben Ford, Walter Trout, Warren Haynes, Eric Gales and Chris Duarte. Supersonic Blues Machine had its worldwide debut concert at the Holland International Blues Festival on June 4, 2016, in Grolloo, the Netherlands. The rigors of touring and the lifestyle caught up with Lopez around this time. Lopez stated "My own personal struggles were overcoming alcoholism, drug addiction and to start eating healthier, lose weight and exercise... I struggled for years drinking and drugging and eating badly while I was drinking... I became very overweight". Once recovered, Lopez noted about performing, "That still doesn't mean every night is perfect... but at least I can walk away and say I did the best I could and I was sober doing it". His next release was Live in NYC (2016), which was issued on Cleopatra Records and produced by Paul Nelson. The recording come out of Lopez attending, and performing at, the 70th birthday party for Johnny Winter. Lopez signed with the Mascot Label Group in November 2017, and his debut album on their Provogue Records imprint was Tell the Truth, which was released on March 2, 2018.It was produced by Fabrizio Grossi, and featured Jimmy Zavala. The song was long forgotten until Limits co-founder Rook Jones, found some demo singles, and sent them to Levy. After sending to Cleopatra Records (the Limits label), President Brian Perera immediately asked to release the song because of how hauntingly beautiful and powerful it is. Cleopatra will also feature Rachel on their Tracks of the Week promotions.RICK LEVY is currently manager, guitarist/vocalist with Memphis Music Hall of Fame artists THE BOX TOPS. He has also been bandleader/tour manager for Tommy Roe, Hermans Hermits starring Peter Noone, Jay & the Techniques and more. Ask one of his countless fans – or even one of his peers, and they will tell you that Sammy Kershaw definitely qualifies as a Country Music original. In a day and age where individuality isn't something that is sought out as much as before, when you hear a Sammy Kershaw song about heartbreak, love, or good times – you know who it is. You don't have to be told. And, in a career that has seen some amazing highs over the past thirty-five years, the best – as they say – is yet to come.Growing up in Kaplan, Louisiana, Kershaw was enthralled with the masters at an early age – names like Conway Twitty, Mel Street, and George Jones. In fact, as a teenager, Kershaw had developed such a reputation for his vocals – even then – that he was often called upon to open for those acts, and others like them. Jones was so impressed with Sammy that he frequently used him on his shows whenever he was playing in the region.Of all the artists that Kershaw has worked with over the years, it very well might be Jones that left the most impact. From the moment that he released his debut single for Mercury Records, “Cadillac Style,” critics and fans all made the comparison. Rather than run from them, Kershaw embraced them. After all, that stone Country sound was what Sammy Kershaw was all about – and that's what he was going to give his fans! “Cadillac Style” made it all the way to No. 3 on the Billboard charts, and from there (to quote Jones), the race was on! Follow-ups such as “Don't Go Near The Water” and “I Can't Reach Her Anymore” established him as one of the finest traditional artists of his time, while records like “Yard Sale” showed that haunting Jones influence was very much a part of everything he is about. In 1993, Sammy Kershaw topped the singles chart for the first time with “She Don't Know She's Beautiful,” which has become one of the most-played records at Country Radio over the past two decades. Albums such as Don't Go Near The Water and Haunted Heart were both certified as million-sellers by the RIAA, and only continued to add to his stature. The hits kept coming on the airwaves, as well. He added to his resume such classics as “I Can't Reach Her Anymore,” “Meant To Be,” his cover of The Amazing Rhythm Aces' “Third Rate Romance,” and 1998's “Love Of My Life,” which cemented his reputation as a balladeer.Kershaw can be found out on the road – both on his own as well as part of the successful Roots & Boots tour with Collin Raye and Aaron Tippin. The three continue to bring their signature sounds to the fans year-after-year all over North America. But, Sammy Kershaw is not resting on his laurels – though he very well could. His 2014 George Jones tribute disc Do You Know Me was his highest-charting project in fifteen years, and has only whetted the appetites of his fans for more recordings. Afterwards, he completed a brand new album for Cleopatra Records that industry insiders are saying is one of the best releases he has ever done. He has also developed quite a strong social fan base via Facebook and Twitter, having done so in an organic fashion – very much one on one, the way he's always preferred to do it! And, if that's not enough, Kershaw is putting the finishing touches on his long-awaited autobiography – which promises to be as juicy as a bowl of the gumbo he loves to prepare in his Louisiana home! So, make no mistake about it. The past has been a great, long-winding road of highs and lows for Sammy Kershaw, but to quote one of his past singles, the goal isn't to rest on those accomplishments, but to be “Better Than I Used To Be.”This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.
