"IT'S FATAL: WHAT IS FILM NOIR?" (PART III) (080) 3/24/2025 Welcome to the third and final installment of our series on Film Noir. As we have previously discussed the technical elements of noir and met the typical character's of noir, we will now take a look at the creative aspects of the genre that help create that special brand of dark, sexy, deadly movies. We'll discuss dialogue, and clever devices like voice overs, flashbacks, and dream sequences that enhance these dark, moody films. We'll also look at the fatalistic themes that reigned supreme throughout the genre.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Film Noir (2017), by Alian Silver & James Ursini; Into the Darkness: The Hidden World of Film Noir 1941-1959 (2016), by Mark A. This week we talk about the 1953 priestly thriller, I Confess. This is the first movie in our Hitchcock series that Bonnie had seen before, at least in part. It's the story of a priest who is suspected of a murder. He knows who the real killer, but the seal of the confessional prevents him from clearing his name. ***SPOILER ALERT*** We do talk about this movie in its entirety, so if you plan on watching it, we suggest you watch it before listening to our takes. Details: A Transatlantic Picture released February 12, 1953. Produced Hitchcock. Screenplay by George Tabori and William Archibald, based on the 1902 play Nos deux consciences by Paul Anthelme. Starring Montgomery Clift, Karl Malden, Anne Baxter, O. E. Hasse, and Brian Aherne. Cinematography by Robert Burks. Music by Dimitri Tiomkin. Ranking: 27 out of 52. Ranking movies is a reductive parlor game. It's also fun. And it's a good way to frame a discussion. We aggregated over 70 ranked lists from critics, fans, and magazines I Confess got 1,587 ranking points.

EPISODE 60 - "THELMA RITTER: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 11/04/2024 There's a scene in the classic 1950 film All About Eve where Eve Harrington (ANNE BAXTER), a star-struck fan who has infiltrated the life of Broadway star Margo Channing (BETTE DAVIS), is telling the tragic story of her past to Margo and her friends. While Margo and company are drawn into the sad circumstances of Eve's life, Margo's acerbic dresser Birdie, played to perfection by the great THELMA RITTER, is not buying her sob story. After Eve finishes, Birdie mutters, "What a story! Everything but the bloodhounds snappin' at her rear end." This is probably the moment I fell in love with Ritter. With her heavy New York accent, diminutive size, working-class charm, and sarcastic zingers, she made a career of stealing scenes from big stars and making the most of her time on screen. She played characters wiser than most, and her characters certainly didn't suffer fools gladly. She is a cinematic treasure, and we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. George Burns and Gracie Allen was one of the funniest duos in the history of American comedy. Both came from vaudeville, where they performed from childhood, honing their skills. When they met and decided to work together, they created an act that is unforgettable. While their earlier shows continued their standup vaudeville act, they gradually transformed their format to create one of the earliest situation comedies.

Enjoy two free detective episodes of The Saint w/ Vincent Price A) 8/27/50 Cupid and the Corpse B) 6/3/51 The Girl in the Lowe Berth The Saintwas a freelance detective with a dark side. He devoted his time and resources to curtailing the activities of murderers, embezzlers, and thieves … but heaven help those who interrupted his dinner. The protagonist of the novels penned by Leslie Charteris was not particularly saintly and his alias derives from the initials of his name, Simon Templar. Not adverse to breaking the law when necessary and always willing to hire himself out to the highest bidder, Templar was more of an anti-hero and the character often needed a little adjustment to make it past radio censors during the 1940s and 1950s. In the radio series, the Saint assisted law enforcement agencies when red tape hampered investigation and was portrayed as a “Robin Hood of modern crime,” who always came to the aid of victims. Sophisticated yet streetwise, he was an art lover, a fighter, and a super-sleuth. The program ran for less than a year with screen actors Edgar Barrier and Brian Aherne in the title role. Leslie Charteris wrote the scripts and produced the series, ensuring his literary property would remain faithful to the printed page. In the summer of 1947, the program returned with Hollywood star Vincent Price (and later Tom Conway) in the lead. By this point, Charteris had taken a back seat. In the new incarnation, the Saint was more of a lighthearted character and the scripts were peppered with witticisms and throwaway lines. It ran on radio until 1951 but by 1962, TV audiences were enjoying Roger Moore as the sophisticated Simon Templar.

The Saint â 1945-1951 There were at least 24 episodes broadcast of this series. It was a fascinating detective adventure series based on the books by Leslie Charteris. Edgar Barrier first played Simon Templar, aka The Saint, a debonair private detective in January 1945. He was then played by Brian Aherne in June 1945 and later Vincent Price from July 1947 up until May 1951. The Saint was said to have been like a modern day Robin Hood.
