James had never seen Sergio Leone's legendary Western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, so he watched it with Dan and they recorded a podcast about it. In this episode, they discuss Clint Eastwood's iconic gunslinger persona, Eli Wallach's unforgettable performance as Tuco, and Ennio Morricone's soaring score. They also explore the film's sweeping scale, its operatic tension, and the quiet inevitability that leads three outlaws to one of the greatest final showdowns in movie history.Stay Connected:X: @talkinfilmBluesky: @talkinfilm.bsky.socialTikTok: @talkin_filmFacebook: You Talkin' to Me? Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 78 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch contributor Karen Peterson to discuss the latest film in their Nancy Meyers series, The Holiday (2006). Tis the season at Director Watch, as the boys and Karen have come together to talk about one of the most popular modern holiday classics, The Holiday. Billed as a house swap story of two heartbroken women wanting to leave their world's behind after terrible encounters with the men in their lives, Meyers sets a more dramatic, sweet tale of finding love and confidence during the holiday season. In what feels like her version of Love Actually, Meyers is able to deliver a much more compelling, romantic film than that British film from just a few years before, lead by an all-star cast of Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, and Jack Black. Ryan, Jay, and Karen break down their thoughts on the film, what their holiday traditions are with their families, who character gets a better deal within the house swap, Jude Law's summer tan, singing in a Blockbuster video, the charming Eli Wallach, and, of course, the most important person in cinema history, Mr. Napkin Head. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h06m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Nancy Meyers with a review of her film, It's Complicated. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. “This is gooning for people who like nice stuff.” - Chris  On this week's holiday episode, we're chatting about the Christmas snooze, The Holiday! Is this considered a Christmas classic? Why couldn't we just have one of these storylines instead of both of them vying for movie supremacy? How little romantic chemistry do Kate Winslet and Jack Black have with one another? Besides The Talented Mr. Ripley, has Jude Law been any more handsome than this movie? Why did Nancy Meyers put so little detail and conflict in this screenplay? How humiliating is it when they make Kate Winslet do all that Jack Black-style scatting? PLUS: The guys wish to party with the great Hans Zimmer after one of his big-ass rock concerts!  The Holiday stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black, Edward Burns, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Bill Macy, Shelley Berman, Kathryn Hahn, John Krasinski, and Eli Wallach as Arthur; directed by Nancy Meyers. EPISODE 60 - "THELMA RITTER: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 11/04/2024 There's a scene in the classic 1950 film All About Eve where Eve Harrington (ANNE BAXTER), a star-struck fan who has infiltrated the life of Broadway star Margo Channing (BETTE DAVIS), is telling the tragic story of her past to Margo and her friends. While Margo and company are drawn into the sad circumstances of Eve's life, Margo's acerbic dresser Birdie, played to perfection by the great THELMA RITTER, is not buying her sob story. After Eve finishes, Birdie mutters, "What a story! Everything but the bloodhounds snappin' at her rear end." This is probably the moment I fell in love with Ritter. With her heavy New York accent, diminutive size, working-class charm, and sarcastic zingers, she made a career of stealing scenes from big stars and making the most of her time on screen. She played characters wiser than most, and her characters certainly didn't suffer fools gladly. She is a cinematic treasure, and we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. Having amassed more than 100 episodes in its run, PACCTS' sixth season will focus its sights on “the greatest films of all time” (both in the US and internationally), as assembled by the British Film Institute's 2022 Sight and Sound Poll of industry critics. Corey will be choosing American films from the list, and Paul will be choosing international ones.  Our goal is to examine the films that are considered great, and why that may be the case.   Ranked 169, Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) wasn't the first Spaghetti Western (In fact, it's the third installment in Leone/Clint Eastwood's Dollars Trilogy.), but it catapulted the genre onto the American and international stages. Starring Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach in the respective Good, Bad, and Ugly roles, the film is a total vibe. Dudes rocking. Closeups. Gorgeous masters. Ennio Morricone's incredible soundtrack. It's so good and fun, Paul nearly (nearly!) couldn't think about the film's themes/politics. Go watch all three films as soon as you can.

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Hugo Morley, grandson of  actor Robert Morley. Depending on what age you are and what country you grew up in, you might know Robert Morley for different things. If you are an American, you know him from his stint as the spokesman for British Airways or possibly the film Who Is Killing The Great Chef's of Europe with George Segal and Jacqueline Bisset. It was fascinating to find out from Hugo, that Robert actually had a lot of leeway in the BA commercials direction. But if you grew up in England or Australia, you might know Robert Morley from the stage where he performed in about 100 films and starred in/wrote many plays. His career spanned more than sixty years and in fact, his first film role garnered an Academy Award nomination in 1939 as King Louis XVI in Marie Antoinette, starring Norma Shearer and Tyrone Power. That's one hell of a debut. Hugo was open with us and told us about (free) trips he took with his grandfather and family thanks to British Airways, of meals he shared with him and time spent in Robert Morley's back garden. There was swimming and cigars….for Robert, not Hugo. We also learn about Hugo's theater critic/actor father, Sheridan Morley who was quite well known in England. We learn about his influence on the musical Les Miserables, how an interview with Carol Channing led to Hugo becoming her Godmother and how Yul Brenner played a part in their relationship. Along the way we talk about everyone from Eli Wallach to David Tomlinson, Griff Rhys Jones, to Joanna Lumley and more. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story.

James Morrison Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson How fortuitous that my first show back after an 8-week hiatus was with the stunningly soulful James Morrison––actor, writer, filmmaker, musician, husband, father, fellow, and stellar human. James was Chicken soup for my post-COVID soul. Discovering just before we went on the air that my treasured friend, Christinna Guzman had passed from cancer opened the door to an emotionally charged conversation about relationships…parent/child, James' son, Seamus, is a brain cancer survivor… love partnerships, how James and Riad have thrived through their 35 years together, including through their son's illness… art, which Christinna championed, and shared with me and oft shot for me, including my Women Who Write Literary Salons, and these Game Changers talk shows, where James has read and sung numerous times and Christinna and I bore witness. To honor her and James' talents, James gifted us with a reading from his show, Leave Your Fears Here, sang, at my fervent request, his brilliant, Selfish Man, about a certain someone who continues to refuse to not grab the headlines, and then read from his brand new show, Satan's Wild Animal Circus of Agony: A Five Ring Memoir, a most meaningful piece about his father's end of life. Powerful, moving, important. We talked about sobriety and recovery, a passion James and I share, about adapting, growing, changing, and allowing space to be wrong. We talked about his and Riad's documentary, Showing Up, an unprecedented look at the audition, with some of our most accomplished working actors reflecting on the process and how it affects them. Nathan Lane, Sam Rockwell, Eli Wallach, and Kristin Chenoweth are a few of those interviewed. I just watched it again and I'm rethinking this whole return to acting thing. It's a wonderful film, raw and moving, and so damn honest. Like James himself. I adore this man and every moment in his exceptional company. I've said before, sitting down with 24's Bill Buchanan, AKA, James Morrison, is like wrapping myself up in my softest, warmest, coolest, comfiest, cutest, silkiest pajamas, and settling in for an easy, breezy, fun, loving, memorable night. This one had the added bonus of being a bear hug of support, comfort, and grace. I'm forever grateful for his friendship. It's a Nancy Meyers Christmas this week as we take on 2006's harbinger of the home exchange craze, “The Holiday”! Kate Winslet goes from Bridget Jones to Elizabeth Gilbert thanks to two weeks in LA, a formative friendship with Eli Wallach, and a sort of requisite love interest in Jack Black. Meanwhile Cameron Diaz spirals out in the English countryside till Jude Law shows up with those daughters and goes full Mr Napkinhead. The score by Hans Zimmer shimmers just enough to distract from some questionable chemistry and a lot of uncertainty about that happily ever after. We're finishing up our viewing of Sergio Leone's Man With No Name/Dollars Trilogy for our month's theme of ASSHOLES ON FILM and we've already established that Clint Eastwood's character of The Man With No Name is a little over the middle of the asshole scale. Bounty hunting and senseless egg yolk breaking make him a contender but probably the least assholey of all the assholes featured in our selections. But this movie is more than just a “Clint Eastwood” movie. This movie is pretty much stolen by Eli Wallach's depiction of Tuco Pacifico and Tuco is the asshole we're concentrating on for the 1966 Sergio Leone classic “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”. Fantastic characters and Incredible moments that are a little bit cluttered amongst the backdrop of the U.S. Civil War which has, perhaps, moved vaguely more west than we might have originally known. It was fun as hell watching the Sergio Leone movies that redefined westerns. Hear us discuss his final, and most prolific, of the trilogy. From wiki: “The Sentinel is a 1977 American supernatural horror film directed by Michael Winner, and starring Cristina Raines, Chris Sarandon, Ava Gardner, Burgess Meredith, Sylvia Miles, and Eli Wallach. The plot focuses on a young model who moves into a historic Brooklyn brownstone that has been sectioned into apartments, only to find that the building is owned by the Catholic diocese and is a gateway to Hell. It is based on the 1974 novel of the same name by Jeffrey Konvitz, who also co-wrote the screenplay with director Winner. It also features Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, John Carradine, Jerry Orbach, Tom Berenger, Nana Visitor and Beverly D'Angelo in supporting roles.”Josh is rewatching Project Runway which causes the pair to discuss how mean the 2000s were and all the nasty reality shows and horror films from the era. Dru brings up the super fucked-up There's Something About Miriam. They discuss the Errol Morris documentary Tabloid. They also discuss The Swan and Boy Meets Boy. Drusilla is really bummed about the allegations against Justin Sane, front man for Anti-Flag. They rage about J.K. Rowling. Enya is the model! In undoubtedly the most twisted double feature we've yet to conceive, this episode focuses on a pair of films centered on the vulgar, animalistic urges which threaten to undo not only our relations with those we thought we loved but even our own attainment of anything resembling contentment or peace. You guessed it, we're tackling The Misfits and Dunston Checks In! But before we get around to horse wrangling and monkey business, this edition's Blue Plate Special prompts a discussion of two flawed yet thrilling new releases in Gerard Butler's latest action flick Plane and the feature film debut of Kyle Edward Ball with Skinamarink, an experimental chiller certain to divide audiences. We have a bit of a divergence on the relative artistic worth of John Huston's 1961 neo-western starring Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, a project weighed with perhaps too much pretext for its own good. But rest assured, we reconcile in firm agreement over the profane profundity of 1996's premier pongo pygmaeus.
