As promised two weeks back, here's Part 2 of our talk with April Trucker of the Month Gary Schloo, longtime owner-operators leased to Long Haul Trucking for the last three decades of a five-decade trucking career. Schloo here tells a can't-miss story about how he and his wife and business partner, Terri, met. It' the "classic trucker-and-the-waitress thing" at a late-night diner early in Schloo's time as an owner-operator. And as most listeners are well aware, a big part of the Trucker of the Year competition, featuring owner-operator semi-finalist candidates throughout the year (including Schloo), hopes to lend useful perspective to all of you, ways to sharpen the operation, button up the business for long-term success. Owner-operator Schloo's answer to a question I've asked most of our Trucker of the Month candidates – namely what their advice to any new or prospective truck owner might be – in many ways comes back to insurance. Build the nest egg early for the down cycles. Put a disability/income-replacement insurance policy in your back pocket for the things that happen to all of us -- whether illness or injury, a crash... The list could well go on. It's saved him over 50 years over-the-road more times than he can count. Hear much more on that score in this episode, likewise a special treat: A rundown with the Semi Casual custom shop's Brian Bourke detailing the work put into two custom-built 2024 Peterbilt Model 589s the shop showed at MATS and on the scene of the Large Cars & Guitars truck show in Tennessee, where we caught up with Bourke. Catch the Semi Casual video mentioned in the podcast here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOrbebJWQsI Also mentioned -- enter yourself or another deserving owner-operator (up to three trucks) in the Bostrom Seating-sponsored Overdrive's Trucker of the Year program via this link: https://overdriveonline.com/toptrucker Finally, a big happy birthday to Gary Schloo on May 26! We hope it's a great one.

On today's episode of WHAT THE TRUCK?!? Dooner is talking to Seko's Brian Bourke about what's happening in global trade. We'll look at air, ocean and trucking markets. Also, it's not easy being a mom and dad in this field, so we're talking about the logistics of parenting. Dunavant's Kelly Lomax drops by the studio to talk about dealing with supply chains in flux. Lomax also talks about recruiting, retention and culture in a world with radically shifting worker priorities. Much like great CGI, well-run entertainment supply chains are nearly invisible to the naked eye. But how do shows, movies and concerts all come together from a freight perspective? Bluebird Express' Phil Hyland talks about how this time-critical corner of the industry works. We'll also find out how the Writers Guild strike will trickle down into trucking. Plus, touring a Maersk ship cabin; a new scam targets truckers; Flexport goes trucking; bag a day in May; Disney declares order 66 on a “Star Wars” hotel; and more. The war in Ukraine has been going on since February, 24th, 2022. As a former freight broker, I wanted to get a deeper understanding of how humanitarian shipments work. What goods are being shipped and from where? How do the shipments that pass through Poland, make it to Ukraine? To get a clearer picture, I sat down with Bartosz Samulak from the Polish Forwarding Company and Brian Bourke from SEKO Logistics. In this article, I will share answers to some of the questions that you might have in mind concerning Humanitarian shipments to Ukraine.

The next revolution in logistics may already be here with a considered shift from minding the supply chain side of retail operations and instead focusing on creating value for the customers on the demand side of the chain. E-commerce has forced retailers to re-engineer the way they do business and a result of that is the advent of Demand Chain Management. Brian Bourke of SEKO Logistics joins us to explain how the new way to shop may now be all about the shopper. We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Joe O'Flynn, owner of Rathsallagh Country House Hotel, and Brian Bourke, owner of Glenlo Abbey Hotel. Both establishments are family-owned and operated, and Joe and Brian shared with us a bit of what it has been like to operate in these difficult economic times. Not only has there been a drop in the number of visitors to Ireland, but there has also been the issue of the “zombie hotels” to contend with. Even in these trying times, however, Joe and Brian remain optimistic about the future for their own establishments, as well as for other well-run accommodations that provide good service and a personal touch for their guests. We also talk a bit about what separates a superior accommodation from a lackluster one and why travelers should look at more than just the cost of their board when considering where they will stay. A hint: When someone tells you that you get what you pay for, they are generally telling you the truth! The price of your accommodation should not be your only consideration or motivation when making your travel plans. A few links of use from this episode: Rathsallagh Country House Hotel, Dunlavin, County Wicklow - http://www.rathsallagh.com/ Their Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/RathsallaghHouse And Twitter Account: @RathsallaghHous Glenlo Abbey Hotel, Bushypark, County Galway - http://www.glenlo.com/ Their Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Galway/Glenlo-Abbey-Hotel/282220584728?ref=search&v=wall There is much more to experience at these properties than just the hotels. Check out their websites to see all of the amenities and special activities that are on offer. We also ran across this clever cooperative marketing scheme on the part of three family-owned Irish hotels: Glenlo Abbey, Rathsallagh House, and Sandhouse Hotel (Rossnowlagh, County Donegal). The three hotels are currently operating a partnership they call The Emerald Triangle (http://www.emerald3.com/), where you purchase one package and receive six nights' B&B accommodation (split among the three hotels). By booking this way, you can be assured of quality lodging as you travel across the country, and you get the great level of service that comes from a combined 100 years of experience assisting travelers in Ireland. We think this is a brilliant idea and a way to ‘think out of the box,' as it were, in trying to find new and innovative means to attract clients! Celebrated Experiences, Jonathan Epstein, President http://www.celebratedexperiences.com/ “Our clients are the most elite travel agents in the world, seeking the very best for their demanding clientele. “ (A little bit of information about the company from their website.) You can also find Celebrated Experiences on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/CelebratedExperiences where you can follow Jonathan's worldwide travel adventures. As mentioned during the interview, you should research any of the accommodations you are thinking about booking. One place where you can find information about quality Irish accommodations is at Ireland's Blue Book (http://www.irelands-blue-book.ie/). Of course, there are other places you go to perform your research. Another good place to start your research is to simply look at the establishment's website and review its history and amenities. This should tell you a lot about the quality of the accommodation.
